[Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run (shutdown script order has been demolished)

2011-10-17 Thread Kevin Jackson
This error produces the "Waiting for network configuration" error message.
The fix is to symlink /var/run to /run and /var/lock to /run/lock

http://uksysadmin.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/upgrade-to-ubuntu-11-10
-problem-waiting-for-network-configuration-then-black-screen-solution/

I've had a massive influx of traffic to this post suggesting this is a
affecting many people on real and virtual hardware. It downed my
machine immediately after the first reboot of my upgraded 11.10 laptop.

Note it doesn't affect clean installs suggesting a conflict of trying to
point /var/run (directory) and /var/lock (directory) to /run and
/run/lock on tmpfs as symlinks (possibly unable to remove the
directories on a running system?)

[Bug 875553] Re: In Nautilus 2.32.2.1 i cannot reach davs address for error message

2011-10-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

@Leon : thank you it works. I logged in Unity 2D session and added the
printer, then its available in the fallback session and I'm able to
print.

@Seb : I agree with you if I use defaults it works. But my hope was
that 11.10 will be user friendly with or without the use of Unity. In
this case if I don't use a "Unity" session I can't add a printer the
user friendly way.

2011-10-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
> Here are some examples:

> 1) Login sound. Many users want to turn it off.

Right, it will be off by default next cycle and a checkbox to turn it on
or off will be added to the sound configuration dialog which is the
dialog most user look for a such setting

> 2) Guest accounts or dedicated accounts. For example, I use a dedicated
> account to play music. It's a restricted account with no password, everyone
> can use it to play music. This account shall never
> - log into Ubuntu One or even try to (ubuntuone-launch.desktop)
> - display update notifications (update-notifier.desktop)
> - search for drivers (jockey-gtk.desktop)
>- do any social networking (gwibber.desktop, telepathy-indicator.desktop)

The guest accounts example don't work, the user directory for those is
recreated at each session
We are not saying that there is no usecase to disable services, but services
should be configuration where it makes sense (the ubuntuone-control-panel for
u1, jockey starts only once if your configuration doesn't change, im clients
don't do anything if you don't have any account configuration, update-notifier
can be tweaked from dconf-editor)

[Bug 875197] Re: Nautilus constantly crashes when entering folders

2011-10-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 876350] [NEW] Can't connect to a Ad-hoc network on Oneiric

2011-10-17 Thread Kai
Public bug reported:

Since my upgrade to Oneiric I can't connect to the unencrypted Ad-hoc network
of my Freifunk community anymore. :(
If I use the (Unity) network-indicator the connection can't be established. I
have an ASUS EeePC 1000 with the Ralink RT2860 chip. With Oneiric my system
uses the rt2800pci kernel module. (I did no changes to the modules or the GRUB
command line etc..)

After digging around I found out the following.
1. During the connection process to the ad-hoc network with the ESSID
"www.freifunk-potsdam.de" I can see this three lines in my /var/log/syslog:
wpa_supplicant[2650]: Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out.
wpa_supplicant[2650]: Trying to associate with SSID 'www.freifunk-potsdam.de'
wpa_supplicant[2650]: Association request to the driver failed

2. I can establish a connection if I do it manually by:
$> iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
$> iwconfig wlan0 essid "www.freifunk-potsdam.de"
$> dhclient wlan0

3. During the connection process - initiated by clicking on my network in the
network-indicator - I can see that my wlan0 device hasn't set an ESSID. - So
for me its clear why I can't connect. Without a assigned ESSID I cen't get an
IP address. "iwconfig wlan0" during the connection process is:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
  Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency:2.412 GHz Cell: Not-Associated
  Tx-Power=20 dBm
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Encryption key:off
  Power Management:off

4. If I set the ESSID manually during the connection process - initiated
by clicking on my network in the network-indicator - by "iwconfig wlan0
essid 'www.freifunk-potsdam.de'" the connection becomes established and
I get an IP address at the end.

To sum it up:
During the connection process for an ad-hoc network during the
network-indicator the ESSID is not set and so no connection can be established.

I would be happy if you can give me an hint for fixing this. :)

Thanks and best regards!

[Bug 736523] Re: cannot left click and drag with touchpad (regression)

2011-10-17 Thread Aether
I did a fresh install on my Dell Mini 10v after the release (previous
was beta 1 upgrade from 11.04) and all working now.

Must say, its pretty polished - running lubuntu 64bit, 15s to boot into
a fully working environment. Working Citrix Receiver, Skype, flash is
stable and VPNC even working with Gnome-Network-Manager rather than
dropping to command line with some parameter.

2011-10-17 Thread NikTheGeek
Likewise, upgrade from 11.04. However when selecting shutdown, it drops
me to a login box. Selecting shutdown from there does nothing at all.
Only solution is to log back in and shutdown from a sudo terminal
session.

Tried unity --reset to re-build/re-install unity, but didn't make any
difference.

[Bug 875391] Re: Scrolling calendar by week crashes

[Bug 863459] Re: Really bad artifacting on Lenovo S10 after upgrade to Oneiric

2011-10-17 Thread peter
This affects me too. Thanks for the picture. At first I thought the
artifacts were caused by compiz when I was swtching between viewports
with Ctrl-Alt left/right/up/down. But now I see that dragging a window
within the same viewport causes the artifacting. So was guessing this is
a compiz issue. It's also my experience that the problem goes away with
unity-2d. And the problem only arose after upgrading to oneiric from
natty.

Workaround if you got this bug after installing xorg-edgers ppa into Ubuntu

sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

[Bug 876352] [NEW] Problem with window titles in Radiance theme

2011-10-17 Thread mackuz
Public bug reported:

Windows titles captions on the top panel in 11.10 Radiance is in black slightly
recessed font, which causes unpleasant red (on the right side) and white (in
the bottom) outlines. The more transparent is the panel, the stronger is the
effect, yet it is visible on an opaque panel, as well. Reproducible on a
desktop PC w/ nVidia 6200 video adapter (clean install) and on a laptop w/
Intel GMA 900 adapter (Sony Vaio VGN-FS850P/W, upgraded from 11.04).
Brightness/Contrast adjustments do not solve the problem, just slightly helps.
The theme is virtually unusable.
The problem is not reproducible in Ambiance.

[Bug 875741] Re: OSError: [Errno 17] File exists: '/target/var'

2011-10-17 Thread Paul D Smyth
I deleted the partition table during the install but I'm not sure it had
quite managed to do it correctly. I rebooted, deleted the partition
table, rebooted again and then used gparted in "Try Ubuntu" to create
the partitions I required. I then ran the install which was successful.

[Bug 870696] Re: Oneiric ubiquity has translations loading problem, and other l10n problems met after installation

2011-10-17 Thread Cheng-Chia Tseng
** Description changed:

- Some strings are has translated before the non-langpack deadline 9/29,
- but still not loaded at pre-release installation.
+ Some strings has been translated, but still not loaded at installation
+ process if you select "中文 (繁體)" as your language before going to the
+ installer.

For example, in the Chinese (Traditional) language installation, "has at
least {SIZE} available drive space", the whole content in In
"Installation type" section, and "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" are not
  showed in translated ones.

- Other strings which translated after in front strings but before the
- deadline is showed in translated forms. For example, "安裝這個軟體 (Install
- this third-party software)" is translated after those strings.
-
See attachments to know further about the situation.

- I think that the whole content in In "Installation type" section not
- showing in translated ones will put Chinese (Traditional) users in a
- maze. It should be critical enough to fix before 11.10 release.
+ After insatallation, major l10n problems met:
+ 1. Chinese characters are not showed properly in some programs, for example,
date and time indicater:
+
+ 2. The string of authentication from jockey shows as "[Invalid UTF-8]"
+
+ 3. Sans font uses WenQuanYi Zen Hei instead of WenQuanYi Micro Hei which
+ should be the first selected font via /etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-
+ selector-zh-tw.conf . This file is not available in the folder.
+
+ Note: the content of /etc/default/locale is
+ LANG="zh_TW"
+ LANGUAGE="zh_TW.UTF-8"
+ LC_CTYPE="zh_TW.UTF-8"
+ LC_COLLATE="zh_TW.UTF-8"
+
+ However, if you use English by default and later select "中文 (繁體)" as
+ your language instead of English in the first screen of the installer,
+ you will see the interface showing full translations. "has at least
+ {SIZE} available drive space", the whole content in In "Installation
+ type" section, and "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" are showed in
+ translated forms.
+
+ After insatallation, minor l10n problems met:
+ 1. Sans font uses WenQuanYi Zen Hei instead of WenQuanYi Micro Hei which
should be the first selected font via
/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-selector-zh-tw.conf . This file is still not
available in the folder.
+
+ Note: the content of /etc/default/locale is
+ LANG="zh_TW.UTF-8"
+ LANGUAGE="zh_TW:zh"

2011-10-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 859474] Re: Dragging with touchpad unusable

2011-10-17 Thread Kai
To sum up my experiences to get "double tap and drag" working with my
"ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad" on Oneiric:

1. I have the following settings with GNOME system settings for my touchpad:
* "Disable touchpad while typing" = checked
* "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" = checked
* Scrolling -> "Two-finger scrolling" = checked

2. After 1. I have to set the following options with "synclient" (in a
terminal):
TapAndDragGesture=1
SingleTapTimeout=320

That's it!

3. If you wanna have a "middle click" by tap with two fingers and a "right
click" by tap with three fingers you have to change the following options with
synclient:
TapButton1=1
TapButton2=2
TapButton3=3

Best regards!

[Bug 876365] [NEW] Sound of card movements missing. Only end applause works.

2011-10-17 Thread Michael E Granat
Public bug reported:

Impacts upgraded install of 11.10 from 11.04.
While their has never been a sound using the Centre-wheel button to move cards
up to the stack, there always used to be a clack sound for moving one card atop
another and a sort of dull boing sound for making a mistaken move, where the
card returns to its place of origin. Neither of these sounds work in the new
version. Nor does the pack shuffle / deal sound. Only the applause at the end
when the game is complete works properly. Thought that you should be made aware
of this problem in the 11.10 version, called "Aisleriot Patience" on my desktop.

[Bug 875212] Re: nautilus crashes very often
