[Bug 795033] Re: Regression of pmap bug 753124

I agree, it looks very strange that two "official" builds are different
in fact. I'm using http://de.archive.ubuntu.com:

[Bug 776103] Re: package open-vm-dkms 2011.03.28-387002-0ubuntu2 fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h

2011-06-11 Thread dj_palindrome
Nate, your efforts are much appreciated and I'll be following them with
great interest. While I still use the proprietary VMWare Tools [8.4.6
Build 385536] on my Ubuntu 11.04 guest [kernel 2.6.39-3], they seem to
be quite broken on Debian Sid [kernel 2.6.39-1].

I was quite sure they would still build on the rc7 kernel for which
Debian Unstable obliged me to create my own kbuild infrastructure (quite
educational for a novice).

Since the Debian version, even in Unstable, is quite ancient
[8.4.2-261024-1], I am becoming quite desperate.

Desperate enough to perhaps install an Ubuntu package on Debian ;-)

Cheers.

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
Hi,

That same page, Sound Menu - Compliance, states:

"A compliant player should also keep playing if you close its window
while it is playing; exit if you close its window while it is not
playing; and remember exact state across sessions, so that after
exit and relaunch it is as if the player had never exited. " (Emphasis
mine)

I pause the music (so it's not playing) and go to look for quit option,
but it's not there.

Now you may argue that pausing is not stopping.. but from what I
understand, the stop button was also removed (no preference to show it
again either as far as I can see). So, I try another trick, I tick "Stop
when finished" in the playback menu, and then cue a song through to just
before the end. The player finally goes into idle state..

Still no quit option.. when it's been stopped. Close the window.. It
doesn't "exit if you close its window while it is not playing".

So, with all due respect, the application does not follow that policy
page quoted.

An end user shouldn't have to invoke something external to the program
UI if they want to terminate the program. Sounds like we're entering the
realm of old "Torment and Stay Resident" TSR programs..

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
Further down on the same page it also states:

"Banshee should be altered to comply with the standard behavior: it
should keep playing if closed while playing, ***it should exit if closed
while not playing***, and it should restore location and other state on
relaunching. "

Or is someone playing a semantics game with "exit"?

I'm sorry, I didn't make my instructions clear enough (and there were
some errors). For each machine/setup (there are three?) in question can
you do the following and post the output here:

uname -a
dpkg-query -W \*chrome\*
dpkg-query -W \*flash\*

Again for each system (indicating which is which), if you go to
about:plugins in Chrome can you post what the output for the Flash
plugin is please?

Can you also report whether the problem occurs with Firefox? Again can
you indicate the result of about:plugins (in Firefox's location bar) for
the Flash plugin on each of the systems and whether the video works on
each of the systems.

Can you also post the output of
ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
?

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
ok.. I'm man enough to admit when I've misdiagnosed something..
Though it's still not quite matching documented behaviour.

If I pause, it quits but stays in the sound menu, but it doesn't resume
from where it stopped. I swear the process was still running - perhaps
it's because I switched back and forth from notification area plugin and
something got toggled.. Either way, I guess you can close this ticket
again.

[Bug 795851] [NEW] software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When displaying package lists, or information about a specific package,
software-center looks in a number of directories for a suitable icon to
display for that package, e.g. the /usr/share/pixmaps and /usr/share
/app-install/icons directories. It does not, however, look inside the
package itself at the files it will install, for icons that would be
installed into those same directories. This means that an installed
program will get an icon displayed (if it installed the icon itself) but
an uninstalled program will not. Additionally, when upgrading, the
*old* icon will be displayed, rather than the new replacement icon in
the package.

Also, none of the icon behaviour appears to be documented anywhere. I
gleaned the above by reading the python source code. Documenting the
icon behaviour would allow developers and packagers to know how to put
icons into their packages (icons they use for their projects and web
sites) in order to have them displayed correctly in GUI-based package
installer programs, such as software-center. (I expected to find
something in the Debian Policy Manual, but it only speaks about app
menus.)

[Bug 795851] Re: software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
The more I think about it, the more it would appear that all packages
who's icons are present in app-install-data should have a packaging bug
against that application. Why don't these packages install their own
icons? Looked at it from this perspective, that the app-install-data
package exists at all is evidence of a problem in GUI package
installers, such as software-center, not looking into packages to obtain
the appropriate icons for each package.

Not being programmer I am not sure of the meaning of "maintained". Is it
to prepare the relevant files to be included in a PPA ?

At the time being I'm aware of a debian whose address is
http://mirror.network.kz/ubuntu/pool/universe/h/hk-classes/libhk-classes15ldbl_0.8.3-7build1_i386.deb

and I hope this is a basis for someone to "maintain" Knoda in Ubuntu, at
less as long as Kexi doesn't work properly.

This link appears in
http://ubuntu-col.blogspot.com/2009/06/gnulinux-ubuntu-9.html where is a
large and informed discussion about Kexi and Knoda. (in spanish)

Description:Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)

I wanted to select my home wireless network, but every time I select it

Found the problem, I guess.
I was using activeperl for development and I forgot to change to the native one

[Bug 784797] Re: [Natty] freshclam.conf has invalid characters and cannot be parsed

2011-06-11 Thread Scott Testerman
I purged clamav and freshclam, then purged downloaded packages. Then I
switched my mirror from the default U.S. mirror to anl.gov, and
reinstalled both packages.

On reinstallation, the freshclam dpkg configuration no longer has the
proxy info autofilled, and the final configuration file has no errors.
Looks like this was a case of a faulty package download, so thanks for
the verification!

[Bug 795726] Re: package python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol 1.6.0-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: package python-ubuntuone-storageprotocol is already installed and configured

2011-06-11 Thread Raphaël Hertzog
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test.

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-11 Thread BearT
To answer Stephen Warrens question (#25): Yes, I do see the Grub menu
and have multiple OS on my machine.

And secondly, yes, your workaround (#30) enabling GRUB_TERMINAL=console
does work for me. I'm fine with that, I really don't need the graphical
boot. I didn't try Psychotrons workaround (#29) since I am lazy and
Stephens was simpler. ;-) Thanks for that.

[Bug 755608] Re: Ntrack dead loop in function get_nl_link_by_index

2011-06-11 Thread Alexander Sack
thanks scott ... in your PPA was my big patch, right? and in
-propose/-update we just have the one liner?

Sounds good. I think my problem with PPTP VPN is really in libnlX
somehow. route -n and ifconfig -a show the proper values at least for
default route and the out IF, but libnl cache doesn't get to know about
the out IF until quite a while later (and sometimes never).

Anyway, lets declare this one fixed. The problem I see is tracked in

message from the title is not significant.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-06-11 Thread Alan Jenkins
*Grar*. The "conservative" regulator only saves power on really ancient
hardware. On current hardware it *loses* you battery life.

C.f. this post by Matthew Garret who hacks kernels for Redhat and is
generally to credit for a lot of laptop-specific testing, work on
platform-specific ACPI drivers, etc.

You should also be able to find a similar explanation somwhere from
Arjan, who worked (works?) for *intel*.

If I remember correctly, current kernels will even select "conservative"
automatically on the ancient CPUs where it is appropriate.

Believe it or not, Linux distributions aren't _quite_ so incompetent as
to leave massive battery life/heat wins on the table for years, by not
bothering to simply set an existing configuration option when running on
a laptop.

While I'm ranting, I'd like to point out this bug is about a regression
- something that got _worse_ on Linux, that in the worst case can be
tracked down by looking through older versions. ("bisection"). It
won't help us to compare Windows - and try and reverse-engineer what
it's doing better - when we know that there's a version of _Linux_
that's doing better. You'll only be able to isolate a windows-linux
difference if you know you're _not_ suffering from this regression,
_and_ you're running a recent kernel (otherwise you may be overlooking
more recent power improvements. Runtime-PM works very nicely on my
EEEPC, although it's not enabled by default at the moment). It's worth
mentioning in a general discussion, but it's not going to help fix bug
#760131.

[Bug 751618] Re: Secondary axis will not take scale from date and defaults to 30/12/1899

2011-06-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Fitch, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Please
execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 751618
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and
the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

This problem is unreproducible in LibreOffice Calc. Does this work for
you?

[Bug 746565] Re: Ignore explicitly relative 'from' imports when scanning for dependencies

2011-06-11 Thread marmuta
Revision 248 breaks the package build for Onboard in Oneiric and
according to Francesco Fumanti also in Natty.

setup.py: error: no such option: --build-base

The reason is apparently, that importing certain files triggers Onboards own
command line processing, which obviously doesn't know or care about setup.py
options.
I could work around this, but I wonder if it is safe to assume for
DistUtilsExtra that importing files out of context doesn't have any adverse
side effects.

[Bug 488152] Re: [RV710] With ATI restricted driver deactivated, GPU is overheating

2011-06-11 Thread himynameiskevin
Same problem here, it's been ongoing ever since I started using the
gallium3d drivers. While the performance is better, I can't run 3D
programs for very long without overheating. I tested this running Google
Earth for a few minutes, and the GPU temperature reached 104C. The
bottom of the laptop was also burning hot. In Win7 (blahh) I can run any
3D program (including graphic intensive games) endlessly without it
coming close to overheating. Normal idle is around 76C with the
gallium3d drivers, whereas it was closer to 55C previously.

The laptop is a Lenovo T60p with an ATI FireGL V5250 (Radeon x1700 as I
recall). Problem occurs with Ubuntu and Arch Linux.

[Bug 445849] Re: Highpitched rattling like sound with 5.1 surround configuration

2011-06-11 Thread Anton Statutov
I can't figure out how to assign this bug to Natty also. It's affected
by this bug too. I've tested patches from ppa:diwic/ppa and can confirm
they solve the rattling problem, but new problems appears. First, the
sound checking utility from the pulseaudio settings produces very
strange sound (just like vintage phone ring, but I don't think it is
conceived). Second, 5.1 audio now plays like stereo, i.e. the front and
rear channels are not independent now (I have an ac3 audio for checking
this).

[Bug 741408] Re: I was copying a document from a web page when openoffice freeze everything. I had to restar my laptop. Second time, I was trying to do de same thing and it sudenly closed the openoffi

2011-06-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jose A. Goncalves S., thank you for taking the time to report this bug
and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is
missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new
bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

No, it's not possible in CSS.
See http://www.w3.org/TR/2011/REC-CSS2-20110607/tables.html#columns

But
http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/struct/tables.html#h-11.2.4.2
and
http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/struct/tables.html#adef-align-TD
and http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/struct/tables.html#adef-char
suggest that plain simple HTML4 should suffice.

> Anyway, it's not present in the HTML5 draft...
HTML5-draft is just a ... ehm ... a draft.
It could completely vanish, be superseded by another draft or even be committed
as a standard. Implementations relying on drafts are, IMHO, a huge waste of
resources. And an ajoyable one, it looks to me.

The only current real standard is HTML4.01, though.

[Bug 669354] Re: OpenOffice.org Writer crash with Orca screen reader

2011-06-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paolo Rotolo, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

This bug actually seems to come from package opencv: related bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/opencv/+bug/791527

But I don't know how to mark that one as "blocking" this... please,
could someone do it?

2011-06-11 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
gabriele amore, thank you for reporting this issue to Ubuntu. This issue
being Triaged in Ubuntu is dependent on Zotero getting packaged within
Ubuntu's repositories. The packaging request may be found at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/782079 Once the package is
provided in Ubuntu repo's, we can work on triaging this issue. Marking
as Won't Fix.
