[Bug 681555] Re: External monitor not recognized with Nvidia 320M using a mini display-port to VGA Apple adapter

2010-12-20 Thread JabberWokky
I am experiencing the same behavior. To this excellent documentation I
will only be able to add the observation that the system "pause" happens
when running xrandr as well, and the proposed fix does not work for me
on Kubuntu 10.10, as I am experiencing another, catastrophic bug using
the binary driver (the whole video system crashes to blank screens after
an indeterminate amount of time, requiring a reboot to clear. Possibly
related to a few other bugs being reported re: Qt and the binary
driver).

In short, as of right now there is no good way to attach an external
monitor on my system (Macbook Pro 13", 7,1).

I am following this bug and will be happy to test proposed solutions.

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-12-20 Thread Leif Walsh
Brian: I am using the patched upower and friends from your PPA, and I
have a regression: the estimated time is frequently calculated
incorrectly, due to an incorrect calculation of the current. For
example, in typing this comment, I watched as three notifications went
by, all saying "laptop battery low" and reporting the battery at 5%, but
in order, they reported estimated remaining times at 0:12, 0:06, and now
0:20. My power usage has not changed significantly during this period.
I believe this is due to a sampling error, though I haven't looked at
the patch so I can't say how often it really occurs or exactly how to
fix it. In most cases it is fine though, so thank you for the work, but
I think it needs further review and testing before it is merged into
mainline. Furthermore, Intel's powertop gets the current correctly 100%
of the time, maybe it is worth looking in to how they calculate it.

Also, I can say for certain that my device used to properly report
current_now, in fact, I had scripts that used this value before and they
worked perfectly. I wish I could say with certainty when this
regression occurred, I expect it was due to a kernel update. I know it
worked some time after I upgraded to maverick, but before I started
using the 2.6.36 kernel from kernel-mainline (because that was supposed
to fix the extra load balancing ticks, which it didn't really do,
sadly). I don't expect that this is the issue though, since so many
others see this bug that are probably not using the 36 kernel. I hope
to do more investigation in the future.

[Bug 692468] [NEW] brasero dvd burning always ends with a write error

2010-12-20 Thread gianluca

By the way, you can load the image onto a USB drive to test it that way.

[Bug 252286] Re: Paper Size in Evolution ist not respected

2010-12-20 Thread Ertuğrul
I can reproduce this bug in Ubuntu 10.10. "Paper Size" option is gray
and cannot be changed on "File - Print - Page Setup menu" in Evolution
2.30.3. It is selected and fixed as "US Letter" by default. This setting
probably comes from my locale which is LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8". Whatever
locale they use, I cannot see any reason for users not being able to
choose their paper size freely. This is a real annoyance and I believe
it needs an urgent fix.

[Bug 690733] Re: Pulseaudio crash with Rhythmbox and K3B.

2010-12-20 Thread David Henningsson
Ok, thanks for the clarification.

I think the problem lies in K3B somehow, since it seems that the "I'm done"
sound is not being played through PulseAudio. How it manages to "take over" the
soundcard and bypass PulseAudio is what I don't understand (and PulseAudio
doesn't seem to understand that it lost the soundcard either).
I'm assigning this to K3B, perhaps they'll know how and why K3B is doing that.

Nevertheless, I see you're running Ubuntu 10.04 - in Ubuntu 10.10 more
of KDE is running through PulseAudio, do you know if this is still a
problem in 10.10?

[Bug 672964] Re: 2.6.32-26 unbootable: does not find root file system

2010-12-20 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Jean-Baptiste,

Jean-Baptiste Lallement [2010-11-22 11:23 -]:
> I'm unable to reproduce the original issue with the provided test case.
> The diversion is removed and update-initramfs is run in the postinst
> script, copying the right udevadm to the initramfs.

Ah, you mean that calling the udev postinst in step 3 updates the
initramfs _again_, and this time a correct one.

Right, so the check for the broken initramfs should be done before
calling the postinst. I updated the test case in the description
accordingly.

> But, if I run update-initramfs without removing the diversion first
> (running steps 1 & 2 or skipping enable_udevadm in postinst) then the
> current version in -updates generates a broken initramfs and the version
> in -proposed generates a correct initramfs.

That's the situation this update was meant to fix indeed. So I'll call
this a succesful verification.

> So this fix fixes an issue, but I am not sure that it fixes the issue
> reported here originally.

The original description and followups seem to indicate exactly that
problem. Unfortunately it is hard to provide a simple test case for
this, as the actual bug would only occur if multiple kernel ABIs are
involved during upgrade. I. e. the first udevadm trigger during the
update updates the initramfs for ABI 2.6.X (a broken one due to this
bug), and later on in the game a new kernel 2.6.Y gets installed, and
apparently the final udev configure then only updated the initramfs
for 2.6.Y, but not for .X any more.

Thanks,

Martin

** Description changed:

When trying to boot 2.6.32-26, the following error occurs:

udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
Gave up waiting for root device.
  /.. etc ../
  ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/0927db9a-0528-49c5-bdc5-ff3d5a9eb9c5 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

  2.6.32-25 boots fine.

  SRU TEST CASE:
  --
This is a somewhat synthetic, but IMHO sufficient test case:

  - Pretend that udev is currently being upgraded:
  sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.preinst upgrade `dpkg-query -W -f '${Version}'
udev`

  - Now update initramfs:
  sudo update-initramfs -u

- - Finish the fake udev upgrade:
- sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.postinst configure `dpkg-query -W -f
'${Version}' udev`
-
If you do this in a VM and can apply a previous snapshot, or are able to
boot an older kernel, then you can reboot now and confirm that the
initramfs is broken. With the fixed package this should produce a
working initramfs. If you don't want to reboot, then you can just try

-gzip -cd /boot/initrd.img-`uname -r` | cpio -i --to-stdout
+    gzip -cd /boot/initrd.img-`uname -r` | cpio -i --to-stdout
  sbin/udevadm | file -

A working initramfs has an "ELF LSB shared object", a broken initramfs
has a POSIX shell script (the wrapper).
+
+ - Finally, finish the fake udev upgrade:
+ sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/udev.postinst configure `dpkg-query -W -f
'${Version}' udev`

When I arrive to the login prompt, which is not proposed in a graphic

In order to start the graphic mode, I've tried to start X. So I wrote
"startx", and then enter. The graphic mode starts, and the desktop

I was able to fix this from "seahorse", but don't remember exact steps

If I don't misremember, I right-clicked on all keyrings to "block" them,
then, I opened evolution and, when it asked for a password, it offered
me the option to unlock it at login time. I would suggest you to "play"
with seahorse a bit :-)

Good luck!

2010-12-20 Thread Martin Pitt
I fail to see how the current upload to proposed is a solution for this.
If you upgrade from hardy and thus postgrey is using a 4.6 database,
something needs to call db_upgrade to update it to the 4.7 format.
Arguably this should happen in the postinst, not in the preinst, but
completely dropping the migration seems wrong to me. Stefano, can you
please elaborate about this?

Thank you!

Many applications which launch the (usually) default browser (which for
me is chromium) have been launching firefox instead. I double-checked
and my default browser is chromium.

[Bug 691414] Re: clamav taking extremely long time to load database

2010-12-20 Thread Martin Pitt
Scott,

the lucid update changes the libltdl-dev build dependency to
libltdl3-dev. However, that only exists in dapper and hardy. It shuold
work because of the Provides:, but nevertheless this change seems
backwards to me.

[Bug 670016] Re: Xorg crashes when performing gesture

2010-12-20 Thread Martin Pitt
Holding this back for now, as the current maverick-proposed version of
xorg-server is v-failed (bug 650539) due to a regression (bug 680811).

Also, I need to reject this again, as the new upload again introduces a
huge and unrelated diff to upstream files, as I already pointed out in
the previous comment. Please check your package with debdiff before
uploading.

I don't, but I am not the author of the comment. I can ask, though.

Could there be some connection between evince and LyX (related to

[Bug 583172] Re: cups lose configuration

2010-12-20 Thread Erik Auerswald
I see the same problem on Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS with CUPS version
1.4.3-1ubuntu1.3.

After a reboot a new and empty /etc/cups/printers.conf is created.

As workaround I stop CUPS, copy a backup printers.conf to /etc/cups/ and
start CUPS again.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: cups

  cups 1.4.3-1
  ubuntu 10.04

-
  Hi everyone:
my cups randomly lose any printer I have added.

I configure my printer, I can print, but after shutdown, when I restart there
isn't any printer in my system/printer
- I can see /etc/cups/ppd and there are all my ppd printer drivers, but the
file /etc/cups/printers.conf is empty
+ I can see /etc/cups/ppd and there are all my ppd printer drivers, but the
file /etc/cups/printers.conf is empty
I reconfigure the printer, newly I can print, but after shutdown, randomly my
system printer is newly empty...

The bug seems to be correct only if I copy the /etc/cups/printers.conf
  from another pc...

[Bug 644644] Re: Frequent PA crashes during playback - pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated and pa_stream_writable_size(): Connection failed

2010-12-20 Thread David Henningsson
@Romano, hmm, good question - I think the easiest way would be to
install and use the ppa-purge tool to remove my ppa. Then add it again,
and when the update manager asks you for upgrading, uncheck the relevant
boxes.

After changing package versions, logout and login before testing.

@Aleksandr, thanks! Let's see what the other ones report as well.

[Bug 583172] Re: cups lose configuration

2010-12-20 Thread Erik Auerswald
Roberto, I am not sure I understand your last sentence correctly. Does a
printers.conf from a different computer solve the problem? If so, could
you look for the differences between the kept printers.conf and a
printers.conf created by CUPS on the machine which is lost after
shutdown? (You can use "diff -u" to compare the two files.)

Thanks,
Erik

I have a Compal IFL90 laptop and suspending/hibernating does not work right
