This still happened in lucid (see bug 626493 and bug 633788) so it looks
like the fix wasn't completely successful. Reopening for verification.

FWIW, I don't think I ever ran into this issue. I'm just merging a

[Bug 669005] Re: Apache2 crashes on reload

2010-11-04 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Guy, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

Can you enable core dumps for apache so we get a core file when it
segfaults?

This *should* do the trick:

service apache2 stop
ulimit -c unlimited
service apache2 start

After it has crashed, you can backtrace it yourself:

gdb /usr/sbin/apache2 /path/to/core/file (probably /tmp/something, look
in /var/log/error.log)

then run

'bt'

and paste the output here.

Marking Incomplete pending response from Guy.

Regarding this

I don't think that the patch is really for this type of bug, however if
it works then its good, finding the cause and generating the patch for
this bug will help a lot.

Meanwhile you can try mainline kernels here

Install them as simple .deb packages and reboot with the newly installed
kernels to see that works or not.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the
current Ubuntu stable version (Maverick), this would help us a lot. If
you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you
could upload updated logs by running apport-collect , and any
other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

[Bug 670787] Re: wpa_supplicant Association request to the driver failed on orinoco

2010-11-04 Thread Rob Frohne
Well, I need to explain a little more. The note above about this being a
regression between kernel 2.6.31-21-generic and
2.6.35-23-generic was tested with an earlier version of Ubuntu (9.10) and this
one (10.10). I tried to boot into the real time kernel from Ubuntu 10.10,
which is:

fro...@frohro-d610:~$ uname -r
2.6.31-11-rt

and the issue is still there, so likely this is not a kernel issue,
maybe wpa_supplicant, or something else that changed between Karmic and
Maverick.

[Bug 670790] [NEW] Xv / XVideo accelerated video width is limited by / depending on the screen resolution on S3 Savage, but only if the laptop LCD is the primary screen

2010-11-04 Thread Hans-Juergen Mauser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-s3

This bug exists at least since 10.04 lucid, maybe earlier (have not
tested it before).

I am using the S3 savage driver for a S3 Savage/MX card on an HP XE3-GC
laptop. When playing videos (no matter which player as long as the Xv
acceleration is used), I encounter the following problem: whenever the
LCD is the primary screen (with its hardware resolution of 1024x768),
the video "input" width processed by Xv is limited by the ratio of the
actual resolution divided by the LCD hardware width (1024). If I set the
resolution to 800x600 for example (to be able to use the TV output in
full screen mode), I only can see 800/1024 = 0,78 of the real video
width, no matter if the video is displayed in a small player window or
enlarged to full screen. On the right of the video display, the
remaining width is filled with a black (or sometimes blue) bar. Using
s3switch to change the output to TV keeps this limitation, which makes
watching video on a TV or projector a pain!

If the CRT (external VGA out) is the main display (e.g. by using the
laptop in its docking station), I can change the resolution to whatever
I want and still have the full video width. Because of distances,
however, I could not yet check if the output transition CRT --> TV keeps
this full width also for the video output.

In any case, the xvinfo program does not show any limitation - but this
limitation should only concern the OUTPUT resolution anyway, not the
"source" width of the video being processed.

This bug exists at least since 10.04 lucid, maybe earlier (have not
  tested it before).

I am using the S3 savage driver for a S3 Savage/MX card on an HP XE3-GC
laptop. When playing videos (no matter which player as long as the Xv
- acceleration is used), I encounter the following problem: as long as the
+ acceleration is used), I encounter the following problem: whenever the
LCD is the primary screen (with its hardware resolution of 1024x768),
the video "input" width processed by Xv is limited by the ratio of the
actual resolution divided by the LCD hardware width (1024). If I set the
resolution to 800x600 for example (to be able to use the TV output in
full screen mode), I only can see 800/1024 = 0,78 of the real video
width, no matter if the video is displayed in a small player window or
enlarged to full screen. Using s3switch to change the output to TV keeps
this limitation, which makes watching video on a TV or projector a pain!

[Bug 670789] [NEW] libpam-afs-session gives user membership in nonexistant group

2010-11-04 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-afs-session

Using libpam-afs-session 1.7-2 on x86_64 version of Ubuntu 10.04.1

When I have this module in my PAM stack and I authenticate as a user
with an AFS identity (and get a token), I get added to a group that
doesn't exist, as reported by the id and groups commands:

$ id
uid=648(taft) gid=200(bioinf)
groups=200(bioinf),2693(csbio),2694(csbioadm),1103439836
$ groups
bioinf csbio csbioadm groups: cannot find name for group ID 1103439836
1103439836

1103439836 is not a group (or gid number of a group) that is defined
anywhere on my system. If I comment out pam_afs_session.so from the
common pam stack files, I don't see this behavior.

Since the default Ubuntu /etc/bash.bashrc file runs the groups command,
every time that I login as a user with an AFS identity, I get the above
error message (groups: cannot find name for group ID 1103439836) before
my first shell prompt.

Note that the number of the non-existent group is not always the same.

[Bug 642792] Re: ALT+PrtSc not recognised: breaks built-in screenshot function

2010-11-04 Thread Fibonacci
I'm currently using a Spanish keyboard layout, and up until Lucid I
could both take a screenshot with Alt+PrtScn and use magic SysRq keys
without additional modifier keys (so e.g. Alt+PrtScn+B rebooted the
system). Now I'm experiencing this bug.

There is no reason to change the old behaviour. If Alt+PrtScn is pressed
and then released, obviously no SysRq event was intended and a
screenshot should be captured. On the other hand, if Alt+PrtScn+(another
key) is pressed, then it should be interpreted as SysRq.

[Bug 448276] Re: In Lenovo s10, double click in touch pad does not work

2010-11-04 Thread Gursimran singh Mohar
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the
current Ubuntu stable version (Maverick), this would help us a lot. If
you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you
could upload updated logs by running apport-collect , and any
other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

There is very little information liked with this bug report to actually
identify what has happened. Please elaborate a bit what has happened,
whether single click works, or not?

Yes, that's the group that tracks the AFS PAG.

Yup.

AFS has always worked this way. The PAG group can in theory be dropped on
kernels where keyrings are used to track the PAG, although there are
AFS-aware tools that will be confused about the PAG status if that group
is not present. I think that's being looked at for the next major version
of AFS.

But this isn't a bug in pam-afs-session; indeed, for the current version
of AFS, it would be a bug if it *didn't* add that group.

The version of compcache included in the Maverick kernel is 0.6. The
sysfs interface is available since 0.7 which doesn't seem to be release

I think it is better to wait for 0.7 to be integrated upstream. Feel

maybe openoffice.org-filter-binfilter needs to Pre-Depends on the ure

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 664968] Re: Maverick 10.10 Desktop i386 installer fails to boot from USB on Dell Mini 9 if an SD card is present

2010-11-04 Thread Antti Kaihola
delance,

The Dell Mini 9 doesn't have a CD-ROM drive.

Sure, the installation worked just fine after I removed the SD card. But
this will surely cause confusion to some users. I consider myself a very
experienced Linux user, but the solution wasn't obvious to me.

Maybe usb-creator could remind that *all* other mass media should be
removed when installing from a USB stick? Even better, the installer
itself could suggest that if it isn't able to proceed with installation.

[Bug 670807] [NEW] Black screen blinking white cursor after installing Ubuntu 10.10

2010-11-04 Thread Ryan Turner
Public bug reported:

I had 10.04 64-bit running fine on my machine for a couple months. 10.10
came out and I decided to upgrade to the 64-bit version. When I
restarted my computer after the installation, I got stuck at a black
screen with a blinking white cursor. I tried reinstalling with a usb
stick, had the same problem. Is it a graphics driver issue perhaps? I'm
running at ATI Radeon 5750. Also note that I had this problem when I
installed 10.04 for the first time as well. The way I fixed it then was
by running some terminal commands in the live CD boot. I tried doing
that, but found I couldn't even load my live CD anymore. Does anyone
know what's going on here?

[Bug 669971] Re: gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-04 Thread Robert Chalmas
Hi Brian,

Thanks for your quick reaction!

Well, I saw bug 660455 before reporting this one and hesitated some time
to determine if it was the same bug or not.

I finally decided it *seemed* not to be the same because:
- no explicit mention is made of being behind a proxy and that the problem
disappears when bypassing the proxy;
- no mention was made that the crash happens immediately when adding a location
to the clock applet configuration;
- no exact interval was mentioned between crashes, but only a very general "a
while", which let me guess it was a longer interval then my 52 seconds, or a
random interval...

Now I can't promise my decision was correct because those differences
may be indeed caused by incomplete information.

I will add a comment to bug 660455 to suggest its reported to chek if he
can confirm, or not, the details I mention in this bug.

[Bug 669971] Re: gnome-panel clock applet crashes behind a firewall

2010-11-04 Thread Robert Chalmas
I found one more important factor to reproduce the problem.

The crashes happen only when we declare an automatic proxy script in
System --> Preferences --> Network proxy and then apply it system wide.

If we enter a manual proxy configuration information at this place, the
clock applet doesn't crash.

Well, this may be a workaround, but we would like to be able to use the
automatic proxy configuration which is working fine for all other
purposes and gives greater flexibility when changes have to be quickly
applied to 5000+ workstations.

[Bug 670809] [NEW] Autoconnect to wired not working correctly when disabled for WLAN

2010-11-04 Thread Martin Wildam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

In the office I have a docking station for my Dell Latitude E-5500 laptop with
LAN cable connection on eth0.
In the office we also have a WLAN which I use when I take the laptop to a
meeting room.
I was used to set both (LAN eth0 and WLAN "MayWifi") to autoconnect.

Then recently I had the problem that on login the WLAN connection was
considered as the somewhat "main" connection which leads to the problem
that I do not have access to particular resources without first
establishing a VPN connection. This is a different story (Bug 629284)
but the reason I unchecked the autoconnect option for the WLAN
connection.

So, but now when I do not set the WLAN to autoconnect, I also don't get
the LAN autoconnected although available.

In the attached screenshot(s) you can also see that the wired LAN
connection is showing "never" in the "Last Used" column which is
definitely wrong as I use it on a daily basis.
