[Bug 651824] [NEW] Flicking display when things scroll, appear, or disappear (nVidia GeForce 6150)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg The display flickers, for a frame or so showing what looks like other parts of the screen (perhaps previously displayed images) offset, typically along the lower half of the screen. It generally happens when there are updates - particularly new or closed windows, menus, etc. Typing doesn't seem to do it as often, but scrolling sometimes does, as does switching windows. This problem appeared as soon as I booted into the Ubuntu 10.04.1 livecd's desktop. (which would have been using the nouveau driver) and I installed anyway hoping it would be fixed by the proprietary nVidia drivers or other settings. I have tried a lot to fix this, with no luck (it's still doing it as I write this) Attempts included: All available versions of the nVidia proprietary drivers - 96, 173, current (195 if I recall in 10.04, 256 in 10.10) All settings of Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects Upgrading to 10.10 (note, currently in beta or maybe RC) Different refresh rates. I don't know what else to try, and this problem isn't exactly easy to search for. Please let me know if there are things I can try, or more info I can provide. This issue does not occur in Windows XP on the same computer. (Note, I only have access to this computer for a couple days every two weeks or so. Please be patient if I can't respond right away to suggestions or requests for info that I need to use this PC to answer.) @Colin : I hope you 'll find something interesting with my files. Reading the comment #166 of Gogl make me remember that I have also LoJack, but in my case it isn't activated. [Bug 649591] Re: mountall spins eating cpu when 'nobootwait' option exists in fstab followed by a comma
** Description changed: Binary package hint: mountall As reported at [1], mountall is eating cpu cycles on reboot of both 10.04 (images 20100923 and later) and 10.10. I believe the issue is related to changes made under bug 634102. Here is what happens: - The images are created with an fstab like: - | proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 - | LABEL=uec-rootfs / ext4 defaults 0 0 + | proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 + | LABEL=uec-rootfs / ext4 defaults 0 0 - On first boot, cloud-init writes additional entries like: - | /dev/sda2 /mnt auto defaults, nobootwait, comment=cloudconfig 0 2 - | /dev/sda3 none swap sw,comment=cloudconfig 0 0 + | /dev/sda2 /mnt auto defaults, nobootwait, comment=cloudconfig 0 2 + | /dev/sda3 none swap sw,comment=cloudconfig 0 0 - On reboot, mountall will be eating CPU. and /mnt will *not* be mounted. - removing the 'nobootwait' flag, and rebooting will result in system functioning properly I've modified /etc/init/mountall and added '--debug' and '--verbose', and rebooted and collected the console log. I believe the issue only presents itself when the device exists at boot and the 'nobootwait' flag is present. I can boot 2 different instance types, - m1.small : has /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3 - t1.micro : does not have /dev/sda2 or /dev/sda3 + m1.small : has /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3 + t1.micro : does not have /dev/sda2 or /dev/sda3 mountall will spin in m1.small, but not in t1.micro. I'm attaching the output of debug boot on m1.small (where /dev/sda2 does exist and mountall spins). -- [1] http://groups.google.com/group/ec2ubuntu/browse_thread/thread/d415746dff066f06 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: mountall 2.17 ProcVersionSignature: User Name 2.6.35-22.33-virtual 2.6.35.4 Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-virtual i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Tue Sep 28 06:45:14 2010 Ec2AMI: ami-307d8859 Ec2AMIManifest: ubuntu-images-testing-us/ubuntu-maverick-daily-i386-server-20100927.manifest.xml Ec2AvailabilityZone: us-east-1c Ec2InstanceType: m1.small Ec2Kernel: aki-407d9529 Ec2Ramdisk: unavailable ProcEnviron: - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: mountall + + SRU Information + - Impact: On EC2 or UEC, due to how cloud-init writes fstab entries, on first reboot mountall will eat all CPU cycles. [Bug 651845] [NEW] [maverick] Freeze Exception Request: icoutils minor version bump
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: icoutils Upstream changelog: 2010-02-14: icoutils 0.29.0 released. Maintainer position adopted by Frank Richter . Fixed icotool to correctly populate the planes and bit_count fields of Win32CursorIconFileDirEntry for icons (Joel Holdsworth). Fix occasional infinite loop when presented a corrupted icon file (Mathew Eis). Set color of fully transparent pixels to black (Martin Storsjö). Add support for "Vista" icons (raw PNGs embedded in .ico files). 2009-08-16: icoutils 0.28.0 released. Maintenance release - minor fixes only. Compile wrestool with win32-endian.c (from Martin Gieseking). Update license to GPLv3. Remove unnecessary (?) years in my copyright notices. Remove unnecessary spaces in the RPM .spec file. Updated Gnulib stuff and simplify some code in the process. 2009-06-29: icoutils 0.27.0 released. Maintenance release - minor fixes only. Update web site address in RPM package. Various Gnulib and build updates. Get rid of many files in the common subdirectory in the source code. Apply patch from Marcin Siennicki adding support to wrestool for extracting BMP files - thanks! Updated the RPM .spec file a little. icotool: Be stricter when parsing command line arguments. komputes, this sounds like a more general problem, though -- I bet you can also reproduce this with normal unencrypted USB sticks. Anyway, I think it's worth filing a new bug about it. I guess what happens is that nothing checks the state of USB devices after resuming, and thus there is never a "remove" event for the device. It seems like similar issues have been discovered in bug 640807 so more people are looking at it. [Bug 651850] [NEW] psvn.el: cannot commit changes over Tramp; temp file is local
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: emacs23 When editing files in a remote SVN work directory, you cannot perform a commit from within Emacs, because one of the temporary files used in the commit is apparently created locally, not on the remote host where the SVN commit command is run. Steps to repro: 1. Edit a file in a remote SVN work directory, e.g. C-x C-f /m...@remote:/tmp/testcheckout/file.txt 2. Make some local changes 3. Run M-x svn-status 4. Mark file.txt to be committed with *; press c to actually commit. Write a short log message in the *svn-log-edit* buffer 5. Attempt to commit with C-c C-c Actual results: The following message is displayed in the minibuffer: svn failed: Can't open file '/tmp/svn.arg.2331QTe': No such file or directory ^M Expected results: Committed revision 12345 For debugging, (setq debug-on-error t) doesn't help in this situation, because the SVN error is not an Emacs error; Emacs simply displays the error message from the back end. The function which removes temporary files used by psvn.el is called svn-status-remove-temp-file-maybe; I guess it might be useful to instrument, replace, or advice this function to see what is being removed when. lucid$ apt-cache policy emacs23 emacs23: Installed: 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 Candidate: 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 Version table: *** 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 0 500 http://mirrors.nic.funet.fi/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status lucid$ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Release: 10.04 ** Affects: emacs23 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- psvn.el: cannot commit changes over Tramp; temp file is local https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651850 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Silly me ... ** Description changed: Binary package hint: emacs23 When editing files in a remote SVN work directory, you cannot perform a commit from within Emacs, because one of the temporary files used in the commit is apparently created locally, not on the remote host where the SVN commit command is run. Steps to repro: - 1. Edit a file in a remote SVN work directory, e.g. C-x C-f /m...@remote:/tmp/testcheckout/file.txt - 2. Make some local changes - 3. Run M-x svn-status - 4. Mark file.txt to be committed with *; press c to actually commit. Write a short log message in the *svn-log-edit* buffer - 5. Attempt to commit with C-c C-c + 1. Edit a file in a remote SVN work directory, e.g. C-x C-f /m...@remote:/tmp/testcheckout/file.txt + 2. Make some local changes + 3. Run M-x svn-status + 4. Mark file.txt to be committed with *; press c to actually commit. Write a short log message in the *svn-log-edit* buffer + 5. + + lucid$ apt-cache policy emacs23 + emacs23: +Installed: 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 +Candidate: 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 +Version table: + *** 23.1+1-4ubuntu7 0 +500 http://mirrors.nic.funet.fi/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages +100 /var/lib/dpkg/status + + lucid$ lsb_release -rd + Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS + Release: 10.04 -- psvn.el: cannot commit changes over Tramp; temp file is local https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651850 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor
In bug 643118 the consequences are more serious, because g-s-d picks an unsupported mode instead of the preferred one, and the display is messed up. I understand the driver should not suggest broken modes, but what is g-s-d trying to do anyway? Should it not just keep the preferred mode that the X server set up? -- Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 651386] Re: FTBFS in Maverick outside pbuilder/buildds
No, it's not reproducible with bzr bd, I'm doing this all the time. Also, the patch doesn't make sense to me: DistUtilsExtra already installs every file in data/icons, it doesn't special-case *.svg in any way. So at most this change is just papering over what really caused the FTBFS for you. If I run "./setup.py install --root=/tmp/x", things work fine: [...] copying data/icons/scalable/apps/apport.svg -> /tmp/x/usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps [...] This is not meant to be changed in apport's setup.py; this seems to be a race condition in python-distutils-extra somewhere. ** Package changed: apport (Ubuntu) => python-distutils-extra (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: python-distutils-extra (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- FTBFS in Maverick outside pbuilder/buildds https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651386 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 651869] [NEW] can't boot Toshiba NB-305 in Maverick
Public bug reported: I believe this is highly related to these bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/601986 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/508516 The problem has worsened in Maverick beta. I used to eventually (after 7 or 8 minutes as described in the bugs above) be able to boot my system without using the "nohz=off highres=off" kernel command-line arguments. The system will never boot without these parameters now. I wanted to post my apport-info to bug #601986, but apport encouraged me to file a new bug. This is it. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get this resolved. [Bug 651867] [NEW] --include does the same as --exclude!
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grep > lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch) Release:10.10 I'm using maverick beta that contains grep 2.6.3. When using the '--include' option to grep (mainly used for recursive matching), grep 2.6.3 does not behave as expected. In fact, it works like '--exclude', but only in the top level directory. Example: 1. Create a subdirectory that contains two files "file.has" and "file.hasnot". Both files contain only the string 'test'. >mkdir test >cd test >echo "test" > file.has >echo "test" > file.hasnot 2. Now I do: > grep --include="file.has" -l test * file.hasnot I would expect the command to output "file.has". The behavior shown is the behavior of "--exclude": > grep --exclude="file.has" -l test * file.hasnot This is not a very practical example and doesn't show the maximal confusion. So another demonstration: 1. Create a new subdirectory and make an additional copy of the files into the subdir. > mkdir sub > cp file.* sub/ 2. Now do the above commands recursively: > grep -rl --include="file.has" test * file.hasnot sub/file.has > grep -rl --exclude="file.has" test * file.hasnot sub/file.hasnot This is definitely not the expected behavior. I have built an up-to-date grep (grep 2.7) from the GNU homepage, and this does not have the problematic behavior, so I guess the best solution is to upgrade grep. ** Affects: grep (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- --include does the same as --exclude! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651867 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
