[Bug 537974] [NEW] 1.15.2 security update released; CSS validation issue
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: Binary package hint: mediawiki >From the release notes: A CSS validation issue was discovered which allows editors to display external images in wiki pages. This is a privacy concern on public wikis, since a malicious user may link to an image on a server they control, which would allow that attacker to gather IP addresses and other information from users of the public wiki. All sites running publicly-editable MediaWiki installations are advised to upgrade. All versions of MediaWiki (prior to this one) are affected. Apart from the security issue a number of other bug-fixes is also included in the release. [Bug 433799] Re: core R package in universe nags me to install proprietary software at every start-up
Fundamentally revolution R is treating CRAN-R like it is LGPL, but it is not LGPL. This causes a major problem. Treating CRAN-R as a library causes REvolution R to be a derivative work under GPL term # 0: "[...] The "Program", below, refers to any such program or work, and a "work based on the Program" means either the Program or any derivative work under copyright law: that is to say, a work containing the Program or a portion of it, either verbatim or with modifications and/or translated into another language. [...]" key words: "based on", "containing the program" and "verbatim" Nothing ambiguous about it. A test is if their program can effectively run without the aid of the GPL program. If it can not, it is a derived work in the eyes of the license. This can not be considered a conglomerate distribution under the OS exemption, which reads: "However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable." certainly the r-base package should not be peddling REvolution's wares in the form of the startup message: "REvolution R enhancements not installed. For improved performance and other extensions: apt-get install revolution-r" Even if it were just a non-free package that would be inappropriate. but for a significantly darker-than-grey GPL violation it is even worse. Ubuntu (nor anyone else) cat not distribute this package without an upstream relicense of R (which ain't gunna happen) or REvolution Computing (ball's in their court). Perhaps it is bug-creep to this bug report about the advertisement, but overall "wishlist" is inappropriate for the Importance setting. sorry, but you have to respect the upstream authors license if you want to redistribute and that's really all there is to say. regards, Hamish -- core R package in universe nags me to install proprietary software at every start-up https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/433799 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 509273] Re: [Lucid] ATI KMS causes DRM error on X200M
Also on an AMilo LI1718. I think it may be GDM that is causing the screen corruption when booting with radeon.modeset=0, as if I boot Kubuntu (and therefore KDM instead of GDM) with the same option I don't get a corrupted log in screen where I have to ALT+SysRq+K to reset it. Regardless of that I _still_ can't suspend and resume, and Hibernate doesn't always function. I need at least one of the to work as using a laptop is unusable without them. Incidentally, after trying and failing to suspend and resume, networking in Kubuntu (and probably Gnome (haven't tested yet) seems to die, being "unmanaged". [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
I agree with Conscious User whole heartedly on the reasoning front. So far many people have provided numerous valid arguments re usability in the blogs and forums and in this bug report against making this change - breaking themes, breaking with another applications look and feel that don't use Metacity, restricting usability - for visually impared users, muscle memory, change to icon order, close icons too close to Edit/View menu in many applications etc etc. However no one is yet to provide any valid and convincing arguments for this change. People are making assumptions, but even if those assumptions turn out to be valid they are very weak reasons for making such a change. People will/may get used to it, but that's not the point. I personally wouldn't get used to it becuase I switch daily between Microsoft Windows use and Ubuntu use. So I will apply whatever workaround is necessary to facilitate my own needs. But for new users to Ubuntu there needs to be an air of familiarity and this already exists even with dual panels. This change breaks usability and compatibilty in a default LTS installation of Ubuntu and there is no official word for the reasoning behind it. Until we can enter into the discussion and challenge and understand those reasons this is a bug because something has changed with no explanation. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 537978] [NEW] Lucid dhclient can't set hostname
Public bug reported: Until recently (up to and including Karmic), there was a "set_hostname()" function in /sbin/dhclient-script, that said: set_hostname() { local current_hostname=$(hostname) if [ -z "$current_hostname" -o "$current_hostname" = "(none)" ]; then hostname "$new_host_name" fi } Up to 9.04, this would work when there was no /etc/hostname. With 9.10 (Karmic), this changed: a missing /etc/hostname sets the hostname to "localhost" and the dhclient-script will no longer set the hostname: this bug is reported as bug #482313 and bug #523188 - see bug #482313 for the fix we have been using for years. Now with Lucid, the whole thing goes wrong, as the set_hostname() function is missing. There's only: BOUND|RENEW|REBIND|REBOOT) if [ -n "$old_host_name" -a -n "$host_name" -a \ "$host_name" != "$old_host_name" ]; then hostname "$new_host_name" fi This is plain wrong for two reasons: 1) as far as I can see, the $host_name variable does not exist at all; there's only an "old_host_name" and a "new_host_name", but "host_name" does not exist - which means the test will never be true. 2) if the test would be true at all, it would still only change the hostname if there is a change in the *dhcp-server supplied hostname*, i.e. if the hostname used to be "foo" and suddenly, the dhcp-server sends a hostname "bar", then the hostname will change. This is also against the dhclient documentation, see "man dhcp-options": option host-name string; This option specifies the name of the client. The name may or may not be qualified with the local domain name (it is preferable to use the domain-name option to specify the domain name). See RFC 1035 for character set restrictions. This option is only honored by dhclient-script(8) if the hostname for the client machine is not set. This is no longer true: under Lucid, the hostname will not be set at all, no matter what you try to do. ** Affects: dhcp3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Until recently (up to and including Karmic), there was a "set_hostname()" function in /sbin/dhclient-script, that said: set_hostname() { - local current_hostname=$(hostname) - if [ -z "$current_hostname" -o "$current_hostname" = "(none)" ]; then - hostname "$new_host_name" - fi + local current_hostname=$(hostname) + if [ -z "$current_hostname" -o "$current_hostname" = "(none)" ]; then + hostname "$new_host_name" + fi } Up to 9.04, this would work when there was no /etc/hostname. [Bug 537262] Re: does not terminate at computer shutdown
Reopening Apport task for improving the data in the report. It should have the list of omitted pids passed with -o, and the running processes (ps aux). I added some set -x and "ps aux" to /etc/init.d/sendsigs, and found out the following: * plymouthd --mode=shutdown is always running * no process adds itself to sendsigs.omit{,.d} lists, which seems intended and correct * All of the actual omitted pids are gained from initctl list and filtering out its pids. - This always contains "/etc/init.d/rc 6" and hwclock. - This sometimes contains the plymouthd --mode=shutdown process, and sometimes not. In the latter case the apport hook is fired, and plymouthd actually gets killed by sendsigs. So as far as I can see, "initctl list" sometimes does not show the pid of plymouthd --shutdown. Is it supposed to? If so, then that would be the bug. If initctl list is not reliable, then we need to find another approach to filter out upstart jobs in sendsigs. ** Package changed: plymouth (Ubuntu Lucid) => apport (Ubuntu Lucid) ** Changed in: apport (Ubuntu Lucid) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: apport (Ubuntu Lucid) Status: Invalid => In Progress ** Changed in: apport (Ubuntu Lucid) Assignee: (unassigned) => Martin Pitt (pitti) -- does not terminate at computer shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537262 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 537617] Re: [FFe] chromium-codecs-ffmpeg for lucid
If we don't ship it, tech users will grab it from one of the PPAs, and worse, the vast majority of ubuntu users will just stop using Chromium the first time they hit a and move to the upstream Google Chrome deb which ships the whole thing by default. BTW, it's not a copy of ffmpeg per say, our system ffmpeg is not multi-threaded. And Google is taking care of the security of that thing, along with upstream, hence the stack of patches in the tarball. -- [FFe] chromium-codecs-ffmpeg for lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537617 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 537714] Re: [FTBFS] Mythtv fails to build on armel
Is libavcodec built as part of this package, or do we use the system libavcodec? If this package uses a private libavcodec, we will have a problem with NEON autodetection, and the package may not work on e.g., Dove if NEON is built in. libavcodec has no native support yet for detecting NEON support at runtime; for libavcodec we needed to build 2 library flavours (one with, one without) so the dynamic linker can choose one based on hwcaps. -- [FTBFS] Mythtv fails to build on armel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

if the new theme brougth something new i wouldnt complain. the big problem for me is the new order. i can change side as i want to bit the order bothers me... i was looking forward to something new and exiting. i was imagining something like the maximize icon on top of the minimize icon, and then the close icon on the side. this could bi devidet so the minimize and miximize was on one side and the close on the other. or maybe combine the 2 bars so the icons was at the same line as file, preferences and so on, but this change of the order doesnt make sence and only results in the system not dooing what is expectet. furthermore the grafic design of the butons are made so that they hang together. that is ugly if you change the order -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
