[Bug 476234] Re: Karmic (sparc) - Installer: "Fast Data Access MMU Miss"

2010-02-16 Thread katre
I also receive this error when trying to use the latest Karmic and Lucid
sparc netboot images.

If there are any directions on how to build my own netboot images from
sources I will be happy to test fixes. I have a SunFire T1000 and can
create new VMs to test in.

[Bug 189517] Re: Open/save file dialog places wrong

2010-02-16 Thread Jan Claeys
As Curtis explained: the default save location is the home directory of
the user 'root' (because GParted is run as root), and the problem of the
original reporter seems to be that he doesn't know how to navigate to
that directory (which is not his fault, as it's not obvious for somebody
new too Ubuntu/linux).

The real solution for such problems is not running GParted as root, but
that would require a complete redesign of GParted...

Curtis: maybe offering to open the HTML page in the default browser could be
useful too?
(Or maybe we can save the log to /var/log/* by default?)

** Changed in: gparted (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

[Bug 522979] [NEW] openoffice filemenu fonts not system's

2010-02-16 Thread Kevin Hunter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Lucid, Alpha-2, 64-bit, 16 Feb 2010: The file menu fonts of
OpenOffice.org are "tinny" when compared to the regular system file menu
fonts. Attached is a representative comparison between the System menus
and the OpenOffice.org menus.

This appears to be localized to just OpenOffice.org. Firefox, for
example, has the same file menu fonts as the rest of the system.

[Bug 522555] Re: custom applets in panel disappear after update

2010-02-16 Thread Gabe Gorelick
Namoroka is just the code name for Firefox 3.6. It's Mozilla's policy to
not label the browser as "Firefox" until close to release, so that's why
you couldn't find it. Try uninstalling it and installing the firefox-3.5
package.

Ok, I just know Ubuntu since 3 days so I need few help.

"check CD for defects"? then see the report?
Could you please explain the way to do?
Thank you.

[Bug 520949] Re: wake on lan not available with e1000e (2.6.28-18 and 2.6.32-13)

2010-02-16 Thread Jeff Waugh
I'm seeing the same on lucid with 2.6.32-13-generic (whereas
2.6.31-17-generic worked).

j...@sliver:~$ sudo ethtool eth0 | grep Wake
Supports Wake-on: d
Wake-on: d

... and thus:

j...@sliver:~$ sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol g
Cannot set new wake-on-lan settings: Operation not supported
  not setting wol

If this is happening with all e1000e NICs, it's a *very* serious problem
for server users of an LTS release.

** Summary changed:

- wake on lan no longer possible with e1000e after upgrade to 2.6.28-18
+ wake on lan not available with e1000e (2.6.28-18 and 2.6.32-13)

[Bug 317855] Re: "Shut Down the Computer"-window spawns behind active window

2010-02-16 Thread Kevin Hunter
This is still an issue in Karmic, as of today. It's definitely low
priority, as I haven't researched it for over a year, but it is
annoying. Unfortunately, it's not something that I can reproduce
reliably. That's why it's so low priority ... because it only happens
between 50 and 75 percent of the time.

Further note: have only noticed it when I push the power button on my
laptop. That is, the window usually pops up in response to me pushing
the power button. When it doesn't, I have to hunt for it's flashing
taskbar icon so that I can shut down or suspend my computer.

[Bug 521672] Re: Startup in Karmic with unclean filesystems leaves system in a wrong state

2010-02-16 Thread Gabe Gorelick
Why is dropping to a shell a good solution? Doesn't the fsck eventually
finish and then you can access your separate partition? It seems much
better to give the user a fast boot and most of their desktop (sans
corrupted home directory) than to just give them a shell with no home
directory.

[Bug 521827] Re: SCSI Epson GT 7000 Scanner Does Not Work

2010-02-16 Thread Draycen DeCator
Sure thing!

1. Download the Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 2 32-bit .iso file to your home
folder (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/alpha-2/lucid-
desktop-i386.iso)

2. Open the Terminal and run 'md5sum lucid-desktop-i386.iso'

3. Wait for the output, which will look like random letters and numbers

4. Compare that output to the one listed for lucid-desktop-i386
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/alpha-2/MD5SUMS)

5. If the output matches the listing on that site, then burn lucid-
desktop-i386.iso to a blank CD (just insert the blank CD, right-click
the lucid-desktop-i386.iso file and select "Write to disc" and make sure
it burns to the CD)

6. After the download has finished, restart your computer with the CD
still in the CD drive

7. When the Live CD menu comes up, select "Try Ubuntu without making
changes to your system"

8. Ubuntu will load into a new default setup

9. Try your scanner (the libraries should be installed by default)

10. After you are done, simply shutdown your computer, remove the disc,
then boot back into Ubuntu 9.10

11. Report whether or not the scanner worked

Thanks for being willing to help!

[Bug 521827] Re: SCSI Epson GT 7000 Scanner Does Not Work

2010-02-16 Thread Draycen DeCator
@billowy
We do not recommend updating your system to a developmental build unless you
have a decent amount of experience with Ubuntu and are prepared for the system
to be unstable. By creating a Live CD, you are able to test something such as
scanner support on the developmental release without having to change your
system in any way.

[Bug 520978] Re: KDE-4.4 upgrade causes desktop crash

2010-02-16 Thread rrfx
Thanks. Installing the package 'plasma-desktop' got my karmic install
half-way working.

The crash reports were then pointing to the ruby interpreter. Rather
than hunting down the particular plasmoid/ruby script that was causing
the crash I reset my desktop configuration by removing
$HOME/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc

[Bug 522986] [NEW] gwibber restricts facebook status messages to 140 characters

2010-02-16 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

1)

eve:[~]% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04
eve:[~]% apt-cache policy gwibber

2)

gwibber:
  Installed: 2.29.1-0ubuntu1

  Version table:
 *** 2.29.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com lucid/universe Packages

3)

I have both Twitter and Facebook configured as broadcast account
destinations. With only Twitter, or both, enabled there is a 140
characters count-down on the right hand side of the entry panel.

If only Facebook is selected, this does not make any sense (now) as
Facebook does not limit the entered broadcast message.

4)

The 140 character countdown is displayed.

2010-02-16 Thread launchpad user
I replaced the stuff in /etc/init.d/grub-common with the stuff that's
supposed to be in there. Works great.

I started a thread in the ubuntu forums and someone else there had a
corrupt grub-common also.

FWIW, I have had no problems with corrupt files other than this
instance.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread Draycen DeCator
@itsjustarumour
That's great to hear! I checked the changelogs, and there have indeed been some
changes to help prevent crashing, however there is no way to know for sure
whether these fixes have solved the problem you were previously experiencing
since we don't know the exact conditions that created the bug in the first
place. Because of that, I'm hesitant to have this bug marked as 'Fix Released'
but I will consult with some others who specialize in GNOME within the next few
days. In the mean time, just feel free to let us know if anything changes.
Thanks again!

[Bug 522991] [NEW] gwibber does not display "wall to wall" posts properly

2010-02-16 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

1)

eve:[~]% lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release:10.04

2)

eve:[~]% apt-cache policy gwibber
gwibber:
  Installed: 2.29.1-0ubuntu1

  Version table:
 *** 2.29.1-0ubuntu1 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3)

A wall-to-wall set of posts should display who is posting (the From) is
posting to another persons (the To) wall.

4)

I have a set of friends who tend to communicate amongst themselves by
sending wall posts to each other.

In Gwibber these are simply displayed as 'posts', whereas in Facebook
they are displayed as 'From -> To' posts.

In essence, I've been CC'd on their post, as it is (semi) public.

Sometimes I can infer who is talking to who - by the content of the
message. Often, I need to click through to Facebook to see who the
conversation participants are.

2010-02-16 Thread mutineer612
After a recent upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 I am experiencing this same
problem. In my situation when restarting the printer after a reboot the
lsusb displays the printer, but I've tried restarting cups and the
printer is not detected. I've also tried manually specifying the bus
and device id from the lsusb output in the hp-setup command with no
luck.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread Draycen DeCator
@itsjustarumour
I have confirmed that we are unable to mark this bug as having a fix released
unless we know the exact cause of the bug and can find evidence in the change
logs that the bug has in fact been fixed. Since you were able to reproduce this
bug consistently in Karmic, I am hoping to test this on my own system. Could
you please let me know what packages you had to install in order to get this
bug to occur? If it is a long list that you do not want to leave in a comment,
you can go to my Launchpad page and send me an email. Sorry this has taken so
much work on your part. We really appreciate all of your help!

[Bug 522995] [NEW] Quicktime Totem Plugin Crash on a Particular URL

[Bug 107540] Re: Audigy sound card produces no sound

2010-02-16 Thread Jonathan Rogers
I have the same problem as described in the original report except that
I must enable (unmute) the "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" switch to
get any sound out of the analog 3.5" jacks I have my surround speaker
system plugged in to. I believe that I have had this problem ever since
I bought this Audigy card, but since I determined the fix experimentally
years ago and the libasound state was preserved, I didn't remember until
I tried a Karmic Live CD recently.

I've been quite impressed with the integration of sound preferences and
mixer controls in Karmic that hide all distinctions between Pulseaudio,
ALSA, kernel, and userspace behind an easy to use GUI. When I boot a
Live CD, I can completely control both the motherboard sound device and
the Audigy card using the standard volume control and preferences, but I
get absolutely no sound out of the Audigy until I run alsamixer in a
terminal and unmute its "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" control.

Since this is clearly a device-specific problem, but is related to
userspace configuration, I'm not sure if it should be classified as a
kernel bug or not.

[Bug 522612] Re: users-admin crashed with SIGSEGV in oobs_users_config_add_user()

2010-02-16 Thread stefan.witwicki
For anyone needing a workaround, the command "adduser" executed from the
terminal can be used to add a new user. Type "adduser -help" for usage
instructions.

Strangely, though, the new user created with this command does not show
up in the users-admin GUI, nor does it show up in the list diaplayed at
the login screen. You have manually enter the new uesr's login name in
order to log him/her in.

[Bug 522996] [NEW] Keys get stuck on Dell Studio 1535

2010-02-16 Thread Johnny Levai
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have a Dell Studio 1535 and I have problems with the keyboard. I've
used Jaunty and now using Karmic, but I'm still experiencing problems.
Sometimes when I type, a key randomly gets "stuck" and repeats, until I
press a key again (it doesn't matter if I press the same key or any
other key). I've also used Kubuntu and experienced the same there too.
It's very hard to reproduce because it's random. I've also tried Windows
Vista and Windows 7, but there were no issues there. Typing seems to be
jagged compared to typing in Windows.

Someone else already reported this issue on the forums:

I hope that we can hunt down this little irritating bug :)

[Bug 521300] Re: epiphany-browser renders incorrect

2010-02-16 Thread Nikola Yanev
It's not from the adblock extension. I had this problem before enable it
and i think it is something wrong with libwebkit ot libjpeg/png, because
these are images. strange, this appears in chromium too, but not in
midori, hm.

[Bug 522318] Re: Serial Tablet PCs not supported in lucid

2010-02-16 Thread Malcolm Scott
For the record, my HP 2710p (which worked (almost*) perfectly in Karmic)
seems to be affected by this bug -- the pen is ignored in Lucid. This
machine has a Wacom digitiser on ttyS0.

* (I say "almost" because Karmic treated the pen's right mouse button as
a middle mouse button by default, which is presumably unrelated; I'll
file another bug for that if it's still present when the digitiser is
recognised again.)

[Bug 514927] Re: Can not control-click in Synaptic to select multiple packages

2010-02-16 Thread Ben Blout
I tried again today (February 16) and Synaptic seems to be behaving as I
would expect, with proper behavior of the control key, as Jean-Baptiste
experienced. Thank you for taking a look at this bug, sorry I didn't
notice the improvement before you did.

I think this bug can be closed.

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2010-02-16 Thread JimUSA
It affected my old emachine that has a replaced drive that was running
XP before the partition and installation attempt. This is the first
emachine, a 900 Mhz screamer. I tried to install over and it wanted to
add an additional ubuntu 9.1 installation. Another oddity is that when
it allocated itself hard disk space, it left 20% or so as free space,
not belonging to either the previously installed XP or the new Ubuntu
9.1 . So then I had XP, Ubuntu, Swap space, and free space on the
partitioning screen, and it said that I had several OS's ? I don't know
if it was counting the free space or the swap space as an operating
system. I chose the manual (advanced) partition and played around and
deleted the ubuntu and swap partitions turning them into free space so
that I could repeat the installation without creating multiple
installations of ubuntu 9.1 but then it said I had not indicated some
sort of boot info. Also, it told me to create a swap partition which I
figured out how to do. I chose the ubuntu partition and made it
primary. That solved the boot objection. Then I had to choose a mount
point for the drives. I guessed dos for the windows and / for the
ubuntu. It did not work. I am surprised that this error occurs. The
file systems are well known and rather simple. However, the windows is
booting now, it did not at first. Imagine, after all the hype, after
sending to England to get authentic ubuntu 9.1 disks, it comes with a
bug, and not only does not install, it disables the working XP operating
system. What a time waster. They should change the name from Ubuntu to
. Of the many attempts and hours spent trying to install it, including
hardware upgrades, I've rarely had success with it.
