[Bug 438244] Re: ubuntu-xsplash-artwork contains redundant graphics

2009-11-16 Thread Terry 'Mongoose' Hendrix
This seems to break xsplash for 1024x768 ( 1.3_ ) - and other aspects
that don't match 2560x1600 (1.6 ). Also this causes a wasteful amount
of memory to be used during the processing of the image. I noticed this
on my netbook, and then found this discussion here that seems to be the
cause. It would be best to expose options passed to xsplash for custom
theming. That way we won't be forced into dealing with your hacks. If
you really wanted to fix your live cd problem ship a solid color
background with a variable logo and trobber, and let people customize
their machine as they see fit.

I just want to use a 1024x768 image for my xsplash on my tablet without
having to alter xsplash source or make a hacked up 2560x1600 bg image as
I'm unable to find a way to pass options into xsplash via a config file
anywhere.

I made my xsplash theme by replacing files in /usr/share/images/xsplash,
since there is support for theming as yet.

[Bug 483464] [NEW] Bad graphics modes.

2009-11-16 Thread dlamer
Public bug reported:

Here is my previous unsolved bug about the problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome/+bug/350330

Now I have some more information about it:

xrandr shows graphics modes that are not available for my LCD matrixs
(i.e matrix is up to 1024x768 , xrandr shows few modes upper than it,
i.e. 1920x1440)

I think ubuntu get's the highest mode by default ( IN: instalator ,
usplash , gdm login manager , gdm user session)

Instalator: I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 seeing only upper left part of
the screen (1024x768 from 1920x1440) by clicking ENTER as "next" button.

usplash : I've changed /etc/usplash.conf to 1024x768 , add vga=791 to
grub.conf , and made sudo update-initramfs

gdm user session: I've used change resolution tool to make it 1024x768

gdm login manager: it's still 1920x1440

So, now when booting, first i can see white ubuntu logo i good
resolution , then I see this brown progress screen and login manager in
1920x1440, after provide login and password it's going to proper
1024x768 (brown progress and desktop)

1) After CTRL+ALT+F1 (F2 etc) i have screen with artefacts (lines in different
colors) , i'm sure its bad video mode.

2) Once CTRL+ALT+F1 got me into proper text mode, but only once and I
dont know why.

3)

Hi

Thank you for your answer. Here is the files in the directory
/var/log/dist-upgrade.

It seems it is the phpmyadmin package. At the end of the update, i do
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
Install all suspended packages

apt-get install phpmyadmin
  always failed

apt-get remove phpmyadmin

I do a: touch config.inc.php in /var/lib/phpmyadmin

and apt-get install phpmyadmin : It was successful

All seems ok now.

So never mind my bugreport it's a hardware issue.

[Bug 481203] Re: Hardy 8.04.3 openssh does not forward X11 always cannot open display

2009-11-16 Thread Jose L. VG
X11Forwarding is ON:
...
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
...

And xauth is installed, when I connect (the first time or after removing
.Xauthority) I get:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth: creating new authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority

The Display variable is OK:
$ echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0

The port 6010 is listening (I guess this maps to X display #10):
$ netstat -pan |grep 6010
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:6010 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
-
tcp6   0  0 ::1:6010:::*LISTEN
-

I can even connect manually to port 6010:

OOOPps!

I got it!

I could do telnet 127.0.0.1 6010 BUT NOT telnet localhost 6010...

The problem was my /etc/hosts!!!
It was:
127.0.1.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx
Now I have fixed it to:
127.0.0.1 madcvd01lnx.rfranco.com localhost madcvd01lnx

And gedit starts up correctly.

What does 127.0.1.1 mean anyway? (I think that value was there in the defaul
config for /etc/hosts)
Does it have a reason or is it just an errata? Does it have anything to do with
IPv6?

2009-11-16 Thread Willem Verstraeten
Note that I installed the lightning extension from the mozilla website,
not from the apt-get repository. This version needs the libstdc++5
library, which is no longer available for 9.10. Installing the version

[Bug 374900] Re: Libfaac not LGPL

2009-11-16 Thread markhaven
This is complete and utter nonesense. The referred code needs to be re-
instigated immediately. If the alleged IP owners ask for it to be
removed then it should be.. otherwise, why is it being pre-emptively
censored and on who's authority?

Even if patent/copyright exists - there are hundreds of implementations
of this particular code in numerous open source applications. The
supposed owners have made no recorded attempt to restrict use of AAC and
other codecs for the last 12 years. In addition, the MP3 and AAC codecs
pre-date the statement by a considerable time. All very mysterious

Anyone can claim they own the copyright to some code - have they
provided proof which has been independently validated?

Either way, this appears an obvious attempt to cripple ubuntu and
devalue Linux as a tool for media transcoding... An investigation of
who is behind these claims would be interesting...

[Bug 476603] Re: Multiple firefox crashes and flash loads CPU to max

2009-11-16 Thread Eddy
My problem is very similar to the original report of this bug. The web
page that usually causes this is www.manager.co.th. This page contains
some flash animation. Each and everytime I visit this page, I saw
npviewer.bin starting to consume a lot of cpu usage, making the whole
machine super busy. Since I am using a laptop, the fan starts blowing
like crazy pretty quickly after leaving it on the page for a little
while.

Something seems to be running too busily unnecessarily.

[Bug 425312] Re: NetworkManager does not recognize Option Fusion+ PCMCIA-card

2009-11-16 Thread GreDi
Hi all,

we have two problems here.

1* Network Manager bug with recognice UMTS device - still does not work
and
2* nozomi bug: ppp do not get IP even if I try to use gcom for registration
(this step working fine) and wvdial (but this step fail).

i get the same result as Franz Dietzmann wrote on 2009-10-06

Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: Using interface ppp0
Nov 15 21:45:49 hafalump pppd[25707]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/noz0
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Connection terminated.
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Modem hangup
Nov 15 21:46:19 hafalump pppd[25707]: Exit.

i'm not programer so... i can't help with Network Manager. But I know
how to make nozomi work with MSM6275 UMTS chip.

the solution is:
apt-get install linux-source
download linux-2.6.28.10 from kernel.org and unpack
cp linux-2.6.28.10/drivers/char/nozomi.c to
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/char/nozomi.c
(sha1sum) abca84ad887bce7b1e6cdaf6e7c69fbed950b84f nozomi.c - this one is
working fine.
cp /boot/config-YOUR-UBUNTU-KERNEL-VERSION /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/.config
make
cp /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31/drivers/char/nozomi.ko
/lib/modules/YOUR-UBUNTU-KERNEL-VERSION/kernel/drivers/char/

Now wvdial will be working fine.

[Bug 424655] Re: Pulse audio memory leak

2009-11-16 Thread Christian Mertes
I seem to have a milder version of this. I'll attach an htop screenshot
showing pulseaudio to use about 2 gigs overall and 1 gig resident memory
after about three and a half days uptime. It's usually half that much
after a day I'd say, whether I use audio or not. Perhaps this is a
different issue but I've found no other bug report on this so far. Is
there an upstream report BTW or is this thought to be caused by Ubuntu-
specific patches?

I'll post the PA stats corresponding to the htop output below. I resist
having run PA in valgrind for a significant amount of time as this might
be required since the leak doesn't seem as large for me as for many
others. I'll do it though if required but the other valgrind logs don't
seem to have done any good so far so please let me know.

[Bug 483474] [NEW] Screensaver starts after a few seconds

2009-11-16 Thread garythornton1956
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

After last night's update (15/11/09) my screensaver kicks in after a few
seconds of inactivity. The power settings are the same as they have
always been (15mins) and it always worked fine before today. I have
reset the Power settings and restarted the computer but to no avail.

[Bug 199682] Re: Asus F5N laptop Special keys not working with asus-laptop kernel module

2009-11-16 Thread Lex Ross
SirFrankie, my deepest apologies for confusion with attached patch. The
path to LEDs has indeed changed from asus-laptop to asus_laptop when
upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10. Fn+F2 was working out of the box when
performing clean 9.10 install.

The original patch I posted here was only to make Network Manager to
turn wireless LED on and off upon network connection and disconnect. It
is not meant to fix any of the special keys and is a rough fix anyway as
wireless LED is supposed to blink to indicate wireless activity.

I used to run asus_acpi daemon as normal user prior to 9.10 in order to
get the keys working. Now that we can see some progress with standard
acpid I would look into /etc/acpi/events directory to configure hot keys
the right way. For now, I am correcting the original LEDs patch and is
going to fix Touchpad button and post the fix here. Special keys like
Power Profile, Fn+C, Fn+V and Fn+T are more or less a matter of personal
preference so please feel free to contact me directly if you need help
configuring them one way or another. It would be nice if we could agree
on what the defaults for those keys should be as well.

Please note that the hot keys are now all being translated to key codes
reported by showkey command, and as such should be configurable with
System->Preferences->Shortcuts menu, with Touchpad button being obvious
exception.

The default key codes reported by "sudo showkey -k" command and
corresponding keysyms reported by xev command are listed below.

Media Player - 226 (XF86AudioMedia)
Power Profile (also Fn+Space) - 152 (XF86ScreenSaver)
Web Browser - 150 (XF86WWW)
TouchPad on/off (ATKD 06b)- 330
Wireless on/off (Fn+F2) - 238 (XF86WLAN)
Asus Splendid (Fn+C, ATKD 08a) - 148 (XF86Launch1)
Webcam (Fn+V) - 212 (XF86WebCam)
Asus4Phone (Fn+T) - 169 (XF86Phone)

As you can see, most keys are mapped correctly with default settings. I
would really appreciate to be able to switch power profiles with the hot
key rather then going through Screensaver and Power preferences windows
each time I need to watch online movie or anything like that. So that my
default profile would be:

Screensaver and display lock in 5 minutes
Brightness at 85%
Dim display on inactivity
Turn display off in 10 minutes

and my alternative profile for watching movies online could be

Screensaver off
Brightness at 100%
Do not dim display on inactivity
Turn off display - never

In the meantime, in order to correct Touchpad button issue please copy
attached asus-f5n-touchpad file onto /etc/acpi/events directory and
restart acpid as follows.

sudo cp asus-f5n-touchpad /etc/acpi/events/
sudo chmod 644 /etc/acpi/events/asus-f5n-touchpad
sudo restart acpid

You may also wish to move the file /etc/acpi/events/asus-f8sv-touchpad
out of acpi directory before restarting acpid. This file is responsible
for Fn+C locking the touchpad and is supposed to fix touchpad button on
Asus F8 series. Hope this helps.

[Bug 483476] [NEW] After Resume display settings are lost

2009-11-16 Thread Nikolaus Filus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm working on my DELL E6400 (Intel GM45) with LVDS1 off and HDMI beeing
primary display. After resume the display settings are reverted to both
on and LVDS1 is set to primary. Trying to change back with gnome-

anymore. Change is possible by manually using xrandr.

[Bug 475814] Re: vpnc will only connect successfully on first try per session

2009-11-16 Thread Per Baekgaard
Thanks, Matt.

As the problem is easily reproducible here on my system, would it add
any value if I could somehow trace the behaviour here? As said, judging
from the log files alone doesn't give many clues to what happens or more
precisely why it fails (unless there is some debug option that I have
overlooked). So it would require building the package here and try to
triage the fail then?

[Bug 483477] [NEW] Clock applet time settings should be the same as time-admin

2009-11-16 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Currently, there are two different ways of setting time & date : System
> Admin > Time&Date or right click on the time applet on the default
panel.

Problem : interfaces are completely different. Also, the applet one
doesn't allow you to set any NTP related parameters.

Needed : both actions (right click on the applet and click in the admin
menu) should open the very same interface.

Proposed solution : patch gnome-panel so the time applet open time-admin

[Bug 483481] [NEW] Ubuntu manuals web page does not show the content of the manual page anymore

2009-11-16 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu manuals page allows searches for applications and configuration
files, etc, that have manual pages.
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/

However, for the last few days, the pages turn up empty:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jaunty/en/man1/ssh-keygen.1.html

Please fix the search results so that the content of the manual pages
are displayed again.

[Bug 483486] [NEW] path to copy CD/DVD on hdd

2009-11-16 Thread LAZA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I copied a lot of DVDs to my hard drive so I ad to click:

- copy CD/DVD
- copy to hard drive: "/home/laza/brasero.iso"
- properties

Then I'm always in my home directory so I have to click
- file system
- pub
- Videos
- *Serien
- 'serie'
- new file name

It would be much easier if:

1. the disc name be read-out and this is the suggested

2. the path to /pub/Video/*Serien/'serie' shoulf be safed

[Bug 416294] Re: VLC crashes if cairo-dock is installed in karmic alpha 4

2009-11-16 Thread Fabounet
thanks for your explanations !
It's more tricky than I thought ^_^

So if I understood correctly, using RGBA visuals for video widgets make them
fail, so the solution would be to allow to create specifically RGB widgets,
which is not possible at the moment because Qt decides by itself if the visual
will be RGB or RGBA.
It would explain why Mplayer and Totem works correctly with Cairo-Dock, and
also all Qt applications which don't use video like Kate or Konsole, but not
VLC or Smplayer.
but then each application should use this new function (or add this new
parameter when creating their widget), so we have to report the bug on every Qt
applications which use video.

Do your patch (putenv( "XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1" );) have the same
effect as asking Qt to use an RGB visual for the widget ? Would it be
applicable for all the impacted applications ?

[Bug 210000] Re: Setting time through clock applet is confusing

2009-11-16 Thread Lionel Dricot
Sebastien > When a bug is a dup, could you please report it as such
instead of marking it as invalid ? It would be a lot more easier for
everybody : original reporters would be able to comment/follow on the
original bug and the duplicate will not be shown anymore in the search
results.

[Bug 483494] [NEW] deluge allow more than one instance.

2009-11-16 Thread Mtt.Castelli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deluge-torrent

Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
deluge:
  Installato: 1.2.0~rc3-5~karmic~ppa1
  Candidato: 1.2.0~rc3-5~karmic~ppa1
  Tabella versione:
 *** 1.2.0~rc3-5~karmic~ppa1 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1.1.9+dfsg-1 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/universe Packages

Deluge is running. If I open a new file torrent, from Firefox (Firefox know
that must open it with Deluge) or right-clicking on it and choosing Open with
Deluge, Deluge should show the add-torrent dialog window over and then add it
to download.
Instead it happen that is launched a second instance of Deluge, and neither
this one shows the add-torrent dialog window. By now, the only way to add
torrent is to drag and drop .torrent file over deluge client.

(_sorry_ if I'm reporting bug here, but: 1. It could also be a compiling errors
2. deluge-torrent.org is offline since several days. Do you know anything about
it?)

[Bug 483492] [NEW] [karmic] update-notifier-kde doesn't inform about updates if computer isn't restarted.

2009-11-16 Thread Rocco
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier-kde

I guess that update-notifier-kde should look at /var/lib/update-notifier
/updates-available or similar file to find out if there are any updates
available.

Users doesn't get informed about new updates, at least if computer as
been on for several days. Rebooting daily looks to trigger the updates
to be displayed some time after reboot. But running the computer for
several days, doesn't show new updates. Which is a problem.

[Bug 483491] [NEW] libtimidity missing in timidity+ package

2009-11-16 Thread Stefan Kost
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: timidity

timidity should also come with a /usr/lib/libtimidity.so. In addition a
-dev package is needed. Without that timidity based midi support in
gstreamer won't work.

[Bug 483491] Re: libtimidity missing in timidity+ package

2009-11-16 Thread Stefan Kost
I just realize that this is maybe a duplicate of bug #/229786.
libtimidity seems to be a fork of timidity
(http://libtimidity.sourceforge.net/) and so the problem is that
libtimidity needs to be packaged.

[Bug 482995] Re: Sansa clip mp3 player unusable in 9.10 works in 9.04

2009-11-16 Thread Frodon
Ok i found a workaround not related to ubuntu at all.

If i make sure to swich on the sansa device before pluging in the USB
cable then it works but if i do like i have been used to till now (i
mean to plug in the USB cable sansa device swiched off) it doesn't work
anymore.

So try this, if you are lucky it will work for you as well.
