[Bug 405516] [NEW] uncontrolled volume blast on liveCDs
Public bug reported: I have recently used the live CD to install and test ubuntu 9.04 When I got the blast of drum beats at the login prompt I nearly fell off the chair, not to mention the blast it gave my speakers. The sound card on this box is permanently connected to the audio hifi and set up to work with another OS. The default output of your installation was way too high. The problem here is that there is no attempt to determine what sound level is appropriate , it is just arbitrarily set and the user is given no opportunity to set it or even to be asked if he wants the silly sounds enabled. If the user decided to activate sounds it would be reasonable to leave him the responsibility of setting an appropriate sound level. However, since you chose not to give us that choice it seems the only sensible option is not to activate sounds by default. This in turn begs the question why these fairly pointless sounds are on by default anyway. What purpose do they serve? When Microsoft first began the startup chimes band wagon, having sound on a computer was something of a novelty, someone probably thought it demonstrated the power and capabilities of windows. This sort of thing is no longer clever or even interesting, let alone obligatory despite which nearly every distro thinks they have to do it. Could you please deactivate all the chirps rattles and squeaks until the user decides to opt to turn them on and has had a chance to set a suitable sound level for the system? This also applies to the live CDs. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- uncontrolled volume blast on liveCDs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/405516 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 386922] Re: grub2 is not quiet enough
Well, they are _misused_ for debugging. You're programs don't come with debug mode enabled by default so why should GRUB2? One fix would be to make it possible to install GRUB2 in two verbose modes. The default verbose mode would print messages iff they are errors or warnings while a verbose mode could be more chatty to help debugging. Everyone able to fix a hanging bootloader should be able to install the bootloader anyway so that shouldn't be an issue. -- grub2 is not quiet enough https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386922 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 315809] Re: [Jaunty] Sound card outputs start muted after recent updates to use pulseaudio
Now, it looks to me like that script started like that should be stopped before the system halts/reboots: sudo update-rc.d -f alsa-utils remove sudo update-rc.d alsa-utils start 50 2 S . stop 50 0 6 . But this results in the mute on system boot. By removing the "stop" links to the script, the system is not always muted on boot (I think it restores the volume levels before the reboot). Though, I assume removing the "stop" links leaves alsa-utils in an unstable state when the system halt occurs. Consider stopping and starting alsa-utils (I don't know if you need to do it as root or not, though I get an error if I am not root when stopping): /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start I seem to get weird behavior when stopping then starting alsa-utils again. [Bug 305321] Re: cyberlink Remote isn't available as an option
Details of an lircd.conf for this remote are given at http://cjo20.net/remote.htm. Using these instructions I was able to get all buttons working under Mythbuntu 8.04. Note: In both Mythbuntu 8.04 and 9.04 the numeric keys, ok, clear and enter etc work out of the box without configuring lirc as (I think) it appears as a USB keyboard. In 9.04 the power button in top right acts as a suspend button and will cause the pc to suspend if allowed. Under Mythbuntu 9.04 using the same lircd.conf I can only get some of the buttons in the top half of the remote to work. There is a work around program provided at http://linux.thaj.net63.net/cyberlinkusb/. I haven't tried this yet. Apparent this remote works ok under kernel 2.6.29 (http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=f14f526d02b14fd0b8c1ac4ec413e4577ad5f62e) This remote is discussed at http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39433. Hopefully, this information will be useful as it would very useful to get this cheap remote working out of the box. ** Changed in: lirc (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- cyberlink Remote isn't available as an option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305321 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 405531] [NEW] The "Filesystem Queue" should be easier to avoid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee I had a single item in the Filesystem Queue from months ago. I don't know how it got there, but I had managed to forget about it since whenever I'd open banshee everything else worked as normal. I had no idea what the filesystem queue was at this point either, or how it was any different from the play queue. Today I got curious so I clicked it and found an old video file. I right clicked to remove it and was given a confirmation dialog: "Do you really wish to remove this file from the queue?" Instinctively I clicked cancel, as since I had literally just said remove by right clicking I suspected this dialog would only come up if this was a dangerous operation (ie, deleting my file). But it's not. So, three suggestions: 1) Consider using something more obvious than "filesystem queue" to describe the functionality. I know what a filesystem is, but I have no idea what this queue is about. 2) Get rid of the confirmation dialog when removing an item from the queue 3) Empty the queue on quitting banshee. [Bug 319656] Re: nmap script engine error
Ack, that reminds me...I had found a few things I missed and made a new patch, but forgot to submit it. I only tested the first time around with -A, which does --script=default, but --script=all brings up a few more missing file errors. I threw those into nmap.files as well, and checked that it matches the actual full set of nse/lua files in the src, so it should be good now hopefully. [Bug 405533] [NEW] HAL Fails: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I ran a set of updates a few weeks ago that caused my (remote) ubuntu Jaunty system to not boot up. It was installed off of the "alternate" CD, with "md" (RAID) devices enabled. I have had a number of problems with it, getting it oing, initially, and then with HAL failing because it "couldn't assemble the RAID devices". More information on that issue can be found in the bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/361689. Well, Now I am getting a HAL failure message on the GUI once Ubuntu boots, but there is no Keyboard/Mouse/Network, so there is no way for me to interact with the system. The only thing I can do is drop to a root shell w/networking at boot. To further complicate the diagnosis, I only have remote access to this machine, so my ability to reboot it is limited to when I can have someone do it for me, drop to a root shell, and then start SSHd. The error in the Xorg log says: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null)) P.S. I also have a warning in Xorg that says: (WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist. Please let me know if I can provide any more information to help diagnose this bug. Thanks! [Bug 350246] Re: Janitor's rude message
The question will not expire if an answer contact assigns the question to a user to answer. Answer Contact have the power to stop every question for expiring by commiting people to answering them. Lots of projects use answers, including the Launchpad project itself. This is more than just Ubuntu. To change the default behaviour for Ubuntu requires a solution that is suitable for all projects. The importance is low because there are no Canonical Launchpad developers allocated to the Answers application. Contributors are welcome to help fix this. [Bug 227439] Re: kmail random high cpu usage during fetching mail
* I get the same problem running Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.2.2 and Kmail version 1.11.2. * I realised that it was the mail checking when I switched off Interval Mail Checking - It is definitely the checking of mail causing a problem for me - At least switching off interval checking let control when my CPU would go haywire * I have seen this problem once or twice before - perhaps 2 months ago for a week or two. Then one day the usual daily Kubuntu software update fixed it * It's a very frustrating problem, especially as it has recurred for me so soon. I would be happy to send on logs and help out * Thanks again for alll the great KDE 4 work.
