[Bug 381059] [NEW] use compcache by default
Public bug reported: Including compcache by default can have a number of benefits for the average, and not so average, Ubuntu user. For the average user, compcache will decrease disk swapping, which will increase perceived performance and decrease hits, which for laptop users will improve battery life. Since many users use laptops and netbooks these days, this is a big audience and would make many people happy. Desktop users will also benefit, as their disks will be less active and their electric bills may go down a tiny bit. For the not-so-average user, such as those that run virtualization, they can run more VMs. With Ubuntu striving to be bigger in the server space, this could be a big deal. For me, I (unfortunately) run Windows in KVM, and it appears that enabling compcache improves my VM's performance. Embedded devices and netbooks (such as those that run Ubuntu Netbook Remix) will benefit, as they have little RAM, and since compcache sort of increases RAM, it will make these devices more capable. Since compcache is already in the Ubuntu kernel (see bug 200765), the only thing left is to either add an initramfs script or a udev script (IMHO, the udev approach is cleaner) as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Compcache compcache: http://code.google.com/p/compcache/ Thanks! ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- use compcache by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381059 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 381063] [NEW] dbus needs more than the default 1024 open files
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 9.04 dbus 1.2.12-0ubuntu2 We're on x86_64, but this is really arch independent On a multiuser system with many desktop users, the system dbus-daemon process can easily exceed the 1024 open files allowed by the default ulimit. When it exceeds that, it goes into a tight loop, sucking up 100% processor, and nobody can log in. And, of course, everything using dbus is then adversely affected. Nothing in the logs points to too many open files as being the problem. Only attaching strace to the processes clarified what was happening. This is bad for thin client people. e.g. Edubuntu users and corporate desktop rollouts. As an example, I have a corporate server running 58 gnome desktops via XDMCP and dbus-daemon has about 1200 files open. Increasing the default "ulimit -n" setting for user 'messagebus' or including a higher "ulimit -n" in the sysvinit file solves the problem. Other than that, Ubuntu has done wonderfully compared to the Fedora that we just upgraded from. I'm most pleased with your excellent work. ** Affects: dbus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- dbus needs more than the default 1024 open files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381063 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 381066] [NEW] Add option to display HTML mail in evolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution When selecting the option "Only ever show PLAIN" under Evolution Preferences > Mail Preferences > HTML Messages > HTML Mode, it is impossible to have evolution show the HTML content of an e-mail. I can confirm this bug. I have the same config. I encountered the same issue. I ran the dbus-send commands indicated here for diagnosis and had the same UnknownMethod error message. Then if I start a git deployment to the VM and in the middle run "ethtool -K eth0 tx on rx on" then the git is interrupted with the error above. I am not yet convinced it's only on Ubuntu VMs that this occurs (but I have yet to attempt this on a non-Ubuntu VM). [Bug 374590] Re: Some games using 3D-acceleration don't work on Jaunty with ATI chipsets
If you are interested in patching (or fixing this bug), check out this link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToFix Also, join #ubuntu-bugs or #ubuntu-motu on IRC (freenode), and ask any questions you have. Ubuntu's IRC channels (and instructions on how to use IRC) are found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat. What most likely will happen to this bug: 1) someone at X.org will fix this bug 2) the fix will be incorporated into a future version of the drivers from X.org 3) Debian will package the future version from X.org 4) Ubuntu will import Debian's package If you'd like to help with the process, follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToFix, post your patch here, and subscribe ubuntu-universe-sponsors (as described in the "HowToFix" wiki page). It also would be helpful to get your patch into Debian. Ask around on #ubuntu-motu for help with that. -- Some games using 3D-acceleration don't work on Jaunty with ATI chipsets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/374590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 381073] [NEW] jaunty : total X crash attempting to install latest nvidia96 (geforce2 - permanent low graphic mode)
Public bug reported: Hello, I'm using Jaunty. I use a geforce2 mx400 graphic card. At first time under jaunty, the graphic resolution was low. So i tried to rise it. There was no way to do it without the nvidia corporation driver (in french : "le pilote propriétaire"). I checked on the "drivers" section, and I chose the 96 (which was the only one available). Rebooting, i did get only a full black screen, with the little scratchy noise indicating that the screen is no more getting information from the computer. I tried with Envy (following informations on ubuntu-fr.org), with the two drivers proposed : 96 and 71. With 96 it was the same as above ; with 71, I had a box telling me that I'll boot in low graphic mode (at least no pushing-button reboot!) I tried manuallly with downloaded drivers (96.43.07 and 96.43.11) from nvidia website. It was the same result. Here is my xorg.conf on a default boot (maybe it is useful to you...) : Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection Any idea of what's happening? [Bug 277412] Re: chipcardd4 uses lots of cpu
I believe there is no real patch for specifically this problem as trigger based hardware scan should work for a long time now. Simply set hardwareScanInterval=0 in the config file and add a udev trigger script (like the one from Debian) and you're done. The introduction of the udev trigger script in the Debian package was in SVN commit r944: http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/aqbanking?view=rev&revision=944 (but beware: possibly not complete). With opening the bug task for Jaunty I tried to get more attention for this bug in the hope to get a fix in the package before the release of Jaunty. However I have to admit that I don't know Ubuntu's release process in detail. So please apologize for any clueless assumptions made before -- chipcardd4 uses lots of cpu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277412 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
