[Bug 320813] Re: [drm] compiz animations cause temporary freezes with vblank

2009-02-10 Thread martin
Yesterday before I went to sleep I rebooted by G45 machine and when
left it running over night with both of the drm patches applied. When I
woke up again I the bug was happening, so that means that I get this
freezes even without suspend/resume if I just let X.org run sufficiently
long (I also had like 2-3 windows on each side of the cube when it was
idling over night).

Another scary note is that I now currently see this on the G45 machine
(I used to have around 60 FPS in glxgears before I applied the drm
patches because of the slow down to screen Hz but now it's getting
crazy... basically I can't even see the gears moving at all and the FPS
is single digit):

mn...@kingfish:~$ glxgears
49 frames in 5.1 seconds = 9.528 FPS
20 frames in 10.2 seconds = 1.957 FPS
20 frames in 10.2 seconds = 1.960 FPS
20 frames in 9.2 seconds = 2.170 FPS

(Note: that's 2 frames per second, and not 2000 FPS!!)

That's an effect of a keypress acting as a series of indefinite
keypresses. Try switching to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and back, that helped on my

[Bug 275111] Re: knetworkmanager fails to start OpenVPN tunnel

2009-02-10 Thread Yves Glodt
kicking this into gear would indeed be nice...

Maybe I misunderstand the principles of ubuntus QA, and what upgrades of
a stable release distro mean, but imho it's at best not very
userfriendly if such a bug is not dealt with at all. At least it's just
a poor QA. What's the point of reporting the bug here at all? Should we
report it upstream instead?

[Bug 327523] [NEW] Sony Vaio VGN-S16C Fn+F2~F4 generate duplicate events when pressed only once

2009-02-10 Thread syming
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

uname -a
Linux s16c 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 24 06:42:44 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

When press Fn+F2, Fn+F3 or Fn+F4 once, the system will take it as twice,
which can be verified with showkey -s or showkey -k, other Fn
combinations don't have this problem. One of the consequences is that,
when press Fn+F2 to mute, you can see the mute icon show up and then
disappear immediately, which lead me to discover this bug.

[Bug 285050] Re: Improvements to search in Adept3

2009-02-10 Thread Aner Ben-Artzi
This post should probably be titled "Fixes for Adept search." The
definition of "search" as understood by most users is that you get hits
which contain your query. Any search that fails to return a package
named "foo-bar" when you type "bar" isn't actually searching. What it's
doing now is giving results only based on the start of the package name.
This is called "sort and jump".

[Bug 131227] Re: notification-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2009-02-10 Thread martin
It should remain as confirmed for now I think. The next step is to apply
the patch to the ubuntu package and use that to create a debdiff. The
debdiff should the be attached to this bug and then you subscribe
ubuntu-main-sponsors or ubuntu-universe-sponsors as appropriate and
request sponsorship (these guys will update it to ubuntu repo and then
it will arrive as a normal update).

Details on these two remaining steps is available here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Recipes/Debdiff
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess

PS. Note that if you can get the patch applied upstream, that's great
because it makes it easier to convince ubuntu sponsors that it's the
"appropriate way to fix the bug" and it also makes sure that we will
never hit this bug again in the future. DS.

Also, for a general overview of bugfixing in ubuntu, check out this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/TODO/Bugs

Thanks for working on this patch Antonio, keep up the good work!!

[Bug 326979] Re: PGP encrypted sent messages aren't showed decrypted in sent folder

2009-02-10 Thread Andreas Olsson
If the mail is only encrypted using your recipient's public key it is
only natural that he is the only one who is able to read it. After all,
you don't have access to his private key, do you? :-)

If you go into Evolution's Account editor and the tab Security you'll
find the option "Always encrypt to myself when sending encrypted
messages". That way your public key will always be used.

[Bug 236275] Re: System very slow after suspend-to-ram

2009-02-10 Thread Shouri Chatterjee

I can quantify the slowdown of the system after a suspend-to-RAM. I am not sure
if the same result applies for a suspend-to-disk.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot up computer
2. Run a sample program and time it.
3. Suspend to RAM
4. Wake up.
5. Run the same sample program and time it.

Time taken will be about 3x more.

Attached are a ps report, a lsmod report, and a report of a sample program
(lame encoder in my case), both before and after the suspend-to-RAM.

[Bug 319097] Re: [intel] polytopes screensaver freezes, requiring hard reset

2009-02-10 Thread Tormod Volden
You should be able to do this over the network. ssh into the computer where
polytopes is running in fullscreen, and run
 gdb /usr/lib/xscreensaver/polytopes 2>&1 | tee gdb-polytopes.txt
then attach to the running polytopes process with
 attach PID
After attaching you can type "cont" to let it run. Then directly on the
computer press the keys or whatever to reproduce the hang. gdb will detect if
the process crashes, but if it goes looping, you'll have to type ctrl-C in gdb.

Does this happen if you turn off locking (password checking) on the
screensaver?

[Bug 263348] Re: Firefox crashes when attempting to print to file (PDF)

2009-02-10 Thread dino
I have been doing a hell of a lot of printing to pdf files, on different
Linux computers with different versions of firefox over time. I have
seen this bug every time. It happens intermittently, about 1 in 10
prints on average. It doesn't occur with Konqueror. This bug still
exists in firefox 3.0.5 on Ubuntu 8.10.

Maybe the package? ;)

This is a user-problem, not code-related. He probably didn't
source /etc/bash_completion -- that's why I asked to write the value of those
two environment variables ;)

Great, that you spent some time on this yourself! If you had to change
something in the packaging compared to the current version or if you
generally have some remarks/improvements, please do not hesitate to mail me
or open a bug (either Launchpad or Debian BTS - as you like)!
I will probably take a look at your packaging soon - maybe I can learn
something from it. ;-)

Jan

[Bug 320027] Re: Incorrect CPU speed on 2G Surf

2009-02-10 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
komputes:
Can you confirm that cat /proc/cpuinfo on a stock Xandros install on a 70x
reports 900 Mhz after the model name of a stock Xandros install? If so I was
most definitely mistaken in my comment above but it seems unusual to me that
they wouldn't simply default it to the faster speed in the BIOS...

As for a cpu scaling interface, there was talk about adding one for the
90x series and there were patches on the LKML list too
http://groups.google.com/group/fa.linux.kernel/browse_frm/thread/ef73483027f10c3b/137adbac167c1202?#137adbac167c1202
. Now I reread the thread there is speculation that it might work on
701s with later BIOSes but nothing conclusive. Just for the record,
which BIOS version are you using?

Having a slower clock speed won't completely stop people installing
Ubuntu on slower eees though, so I don't think that is a fair argument.
Your other points appear to be bang on though.

[Bug 303083] Re: Thinkpad W500 suspend does not resume with 8.10

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Dreibholz
I can confirm the suspend/resume problem on ThinkPad W500 using 8.10
Intrepid Ibex. The system successfully suspends (to disk and to RAM),
but resume does not work. On resume, the display always remains dark.
Usually, the system seems to hang in this case, but sometimes it still
accepts keyboard input and allows for shutdown.

The only way I found to avoid these problems is to turn off compiz.
Without compiz, suspend/resume work.

[Bug 326979] Re: PGP encrypted sent messages aren't showed decrypted in sent folder

2009-02-10 Thread marco.pallotta
Andreas, I have been a kmail user for a long time and with this app if
you sent an encrypted email to a user and then you want to read it from
the sent mail folder you can do this and I think it's a logical thing as
it's I that wrote the email and it's not important if I haven't the
private key (obviously) of the recipient user. If you encrypt all the
email that you send you are in the situation that you cannot read them
anymore, but it's absurd as it's you that wrote them.

[Bug 306066] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 cannot mount a 16Gb SDHC that works fine on Ubuntu-eee 8.04.1

2009-02-10 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Andrea:
I'm sorry to hear that (I found the confusion around not being able to read
bigger SD cards highly annoying as there seem to be few warnings).

As for how do you close this particular bug:
At the top of the page there is a table with the word Status in it and below
there is the word New. Click on the word New and a new area should appear
beneath the table. In the new area there should be the word Status again with a
dropdown that is currently on New. Change the dropdown value to Invalid and
click the Save Changes button not far below it.

[Bug 327222] Re: Simple stunnel DOS when opening and closing connections

[Bug 327536] [NEW] GoogleEarth display flickering when compiz is enabled

flickering occurs when some content in other windows on the screen is

I'm not doing the hard way, only the standard way, wich works fine
before. When others updates as QT or GTK
affects Kompozer, it would be better to recheck it before updates are
public. For beta users (no gurus!), this
means that your preferred tool will suddenly work hazardeous. And when
you have lot to do, it's a little bit harder
to restart with a simple editor.
Thanks for all your info. It works fine now.

[Bug 327065] Re: Crash when importing mbox

2009-02-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
there is no option right now to add apport informations to an open bug
but that's going to be fixed in jaunty, the usual way is to open a new
bug and close the non apport one as duplicate, in this case if there is
enough details no need to do that

[Bug 327538] [NEW] brightness keys don't work anymore on HP Pavilion dv3550 EL

2009-02-10 Thread piero bonatti
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 on HP Pavilion dv3550el

The live disk version handles brightness keys correctly. after a couple
of recent updates, they don't work anymore.

When the brightness keys are pressed, the brightness icon appears on the
screen and the brightness level bar moves, but luminosity does not
actually change.

Note that all other keys work well (volume, display switch, wifi kill
switch, and even multimedia: start/stop, rew, ffwd)

Should it be an ACPI problem, here are the related versions:

[Bug 326205] Re: Gnome login sound has glitches

2009-02-10 Thread Артём Попов
I've been having glitches not only with the login sound, but with ogg123
(default settings) as well. Guess it had something to do with
PulseAudio's ALSA emulation, because switching ogg123 to ALSA device
hw:0,0 got rid of the glitches.

The "load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0" line fixed the login sound
and ogg123 as well. Thanks for the tip!

[Bug 118843] Re: scanimage does not scan image with CanoScan FB630U

2009-02-10 Thread Vianney le Clément
I've got exactly the same problem under intrepid 32bit. In fact, I've
never got this scanner to work 100% reliably under linux. When I get the
above error, I have to disconnect/reconnect the scanner and try again.
After some times it works (sometimes setting the debug options works
too, but that shouldn't be related).

[Bug 318651] Re: Live CD Freezes while starting x.org - K8M890CE chipset

2009-02-10 Thread Bartosz
I think this bug is duplicate of the:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/274340

The fix for Intrepid is not released, and I don't know if in alpha 4 of Jaunty
release is package:
xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (1:0.2.903+svn713-1)

which solve freeze bug.

I think the bug with default screen resolution is 1280*1024 which causes a lot
of flickering, is a Vesa bug:

[Bug 324110] Re: Please update metacity to 2.25.144-0ubuntu1

2009-02-10 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks for the additional diff.

My ideal workflow with bzr is that you publish your branch to e.g.
lp:~chriscoulson/metacity/ubuntu and I just merge from it :) I manually
diffed it and applied the diff to the main branch now so for this one we
are fine. I hope the bzr workflow is not too cumbersome for you (I like
it, but not everyone does). Please let me know if I can help you in any
way with bzr.

[Bug 327541] [NEW] No komma in Calculator

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

gcalctool 5.25.90-0ubuntu1
Ubuntu 9.04, 2.6.28-7 generic

Divide "100" by "8" should be "12,5" but gcalctool shows "125", so the "," is
missing.
Might be a translation problem, because the us "." is a "," in german.

[Bug 327542] [NEW] icons not properly set in icon box when KDE session starts

2009-02-10 Thread dmoyne
Public bug reported:

when the kde session starts som icons are supposed to install themselves in the
icon tray (blackbox) ; I am supposed to get theses ones displayed correctly :
- klipper,
- kmix,
- kxkb,
- knetworkmanager,
- kwalletmanager.

this list obtained from the configuration pop-up menu of the icon tray; now
looking at the icon tray I see the following icons :
- klipper,
- kmix,
- kxkb,
- help.
-
Now if I go :
- over the klipper icon with the mouse pointer it says : volume (from kmix
icon),
- over the kmix icon it says : France (from kxkb icon),
- over kxkb icon it displays information on net work (from knetworkmanager
icon),
- over help icon it displays information on kde wallet (from kwalletmanager
icon).

Conclusion :
- one icon is missing,
- there is an offset between display and information-action linked to display.
