[Bug 240156] Re: locking audio - error writing to kino/mjpeg audio filter

2008-12-10 Thread Daniel Stiner
Unsure if this is exactly the same issue, but today when trying to do
some renders, I mis-typed the render path, and received an error saying
"Error writing to KINO/MJPEG audio filter - aborting." I can reproduce
this at any time on Intrepid Ibex by typing in an invalid render path,
i.e. parent directory does not really exist.

Are you sure it was a real directory your were rendering to, and that
you had write permissions on the directory?

If this is a problem with non-writable render paths, it seems like the
error message is just a little vague and could use some updating.

[Bug 304969] Re: Hardy: Flash can't be installed since install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz can't be retrieved

Randy Linnell wrote on 2008-12-05:

Please tell us about what solution you are talking. I'm main developer of
Ubuntu-based distribution and new Baltix operating system users are very
unhappy, because they can't install flashplugin :(
I found adobe-flashplugin package (it has newest flashplugin, ver 10.x) in
Ubuntu partners repository, but it seems this package doesn't work with Firefox
3.0.3, only with Firefox 3.0.4
I'm thinking about creating "dumb" flashplugin-nonfree package, which depends
on adobe-flashplugin package and put both packages in Baltix distribution
repository.

Maybe someone can tell if there are any important problems with adobe-
flashplugin package or tell me better solution?

[Bug 240230] Re: does not support pulseaudio

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
Audacity doesn't work with pulse audio. I have the "perfectsetup" for
pulse audio using the guide on perfect setup.

There is no other audio editor for linux that I Know of. If you know any
that works with pulse, please add as an comment. thank you.

This is Beyond Annoying that a basic function of providing sound/audio
of an operating system is not met by Ubuntu. And, I mean a WORKING audio
that doesn't require a user to fix to make it work.

I believe this opinion is worth mentioning here as a way to convey some
common sense to the developers: Make basic things work-out-of-box! like
system-wide sound. Until you do, Bug +1 shouldn't be about microsoft;
instead, it should be "make basic things work-out-of-box". Until then,
you are playing catch-up to microsoft, apple, no matter what your
opinion is.

[Bug 293139] Re: NetworkManager does not use dhclient-exit-hooks.d, DNSSEC does not work

2008-12-10 Thread Johan Ehnberg
NM runs dhclient with its own configs (from 'ps'):
/sbin/dhclient -d -sf /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf
/var/run/dhclient-eth0.pid -lf /var/run/dhclient-eth0.lease -cf
/var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf eth0

ifup runs dhclient with the defaults:
dhclient3 -e IF_METRIC=100 -pf /var/run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf
/var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth0.leases eth0

Looking at the differences and named files, we can tell the following relevant
things:
- NM uses a different script file, which is an ELF executable - NOT OK
- NM uses a different config file, which is created from
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf - OK

That gives us no simple solution to change NMs behaviour. I consider the
functionality to be broken and a regression looking at the networking as
a whole. After all, it worked before.

Now that it has been shown in detail, and it is easy reproduce, it would
be nice to get some input from the devs? Confirm? Importance?

[Bug 114065] Re: Mouse goes in... numlock gets stuck

2008-12-10 Thread L M Nicolosi
Also have this problem on a Desktop running Intrepid i386.

It seems that eventually the "System/Preferences/Keyboard/Mouse
Keys/Pointer can be controlled using keypad" turns itself on and causes
the problem.

Numberpad is inactivated and text editors behave strangely. (Abiword,
OpenOffice and Symphony, at least)

After leaving GDM and logging in again everything works fine but the
problem returns if this option is "magically" turned to "on".

This bug existed in a previous Ubuntu version, I'm not sure which, have
to search again in Launchpad, but the unattended "turn on" seems
something new.

Isn't possible to uninstall this option?

things with 'wx', e.g. libwxgtk...-dbg, but no libwxgtk...-dev. These
are found, though, when searching for "libwx". This is very confusing.

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2008-12-10 Thread zasq
Hi guys,
I'm no expert on this either and a little confused by now. I have the problem
(as mentioned above) on a Dell Inspiron 1501 AMD Turion 64 with ATI SB600
Non-Raid-5 SATA chipset (if I read the device manager correctly). Nothing with
"Alcor" in it, right? The bug - that means crashing/ejecting usb-devices with a
I/O error happens with several devices: My HP DJ F380 Printer, my WD Passport
External HDD (which is formatted with ext3 and still crashes, as mentioned by
Troy, when copying from the external drive to disk). It primarily happens when
writing bigger files or high speed is required. For example, I can't burn a dvd
with data from the external drive. And the printer crashes when scanning or
printing big files. I always need to restart the whole system. I would like to
help with this matter, if you would like me to upload any logfiles please tell
me which ones...
Thanks for all your work - I'll stay with ubuntu :)

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
In my opinion bug #1 should be:

"Catch up to functionality/user-friendliness of Microsoft or Mac"

that is if I am correct in understanding that you mean you want to gain
market share when you report "microsoft hold on market" as bug #1

Are developers really that oblivious to the simple fact that the only
thing that matters in gaining market share is 1) Make things work out-
of-box--hardware, common softwares, 2) User-friendliness-- looks and
functionality, 3) better features,

Ubuntu seriously lacks in user-friendliness/functionality that is found
in Microsoft and apple. Few examples from my own experience of using
Ubuntu for a year are: 1) Audio setup problem--alsa, pulse, etc is still
not solved and that a 'proper' sound system doesn't work out of box like
in win xp I had. I don't know what the problem is but it doesn't work
Out-of-the-box. 2) featureless file browser compared to Finder in mac.
3) no control panel. 4) video player doesn't work out-of-box. etc. 5)
Having to deal with terminal. I could go on for a few more.

These drawbacks of holding back Ubuntu to let users utilize and enjoy
the "advanced" features that it offers--compiz is the only one that
comes to my mind. Again, remember that if the user has to hassle around
just to make an advanced feature work on OS, you can't call that an
advanced feature! ie. an advanced feature that lacks an easy access by a
regular (non-terminal user) user, it's basically non-functional. Do
developers agree with me here?

The only praise I can give to Ubuntu is it's ideology of open and free
software. Although the ideology provides greater freedom, unfortunately,
it hasn't proven to be better than closed source in terms of making
human-computer interface and experience easier, which is all that
matters at the end of the day.

[Bug 306815] [NEW] Pasting over selected text in the search box behaves erratically

2008-12-10 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gjiten

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open gjiten and gedit
2) Type abcd in gjiten's search box
3) Type efgh in gedit, and copy it to the clipboard
4) With the mouse, select the content of gjiten's search box
5) Click on "Paste" in the "Edit" menu, or use the CTRL-V shortcut
6) Nothing happens. abcd is not replaced with efgh :-(

Reproducibility: 100%
Version: Gjiten 2.6-2 provided by Ubuntu 2008.10

The workaround is to press Suppr before pasting, then it works. But it
is painful, using a dictionary should be very fast.

Thanks !
Nicolas.

Bug description:
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.

Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting
access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the
ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This
bug is widely evident in the PC industry.

Steps to repeat:

1. Visit a local PC store.

What happens:
2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software
pre-installed.
3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.

What should happen:
1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like
Ubuntu.
2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and
benefits would be apparent and known by all.
3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.

[Bug 306820] [NEW] ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.24-22 nvidia client/server version mismatch

2008-12-10 Thread Vic Hoover
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-22-generic

I just updated my Ubuntu 8.04 system yesterday using Update Manager.

When I re-enabled the NVIDIA proprietary drivers using the Hardware
Drivers tool and reboot I end up with the following error in my
/var/log/syslog file:

Dec 10 03:34:02 Flayme kernel: [ 212.86] NVRM: API mismatch: the client
has the version 169.12, but
Dec 10 03:34:02 Flayme kernel: [ 212.89] NVRM: this kernel module has
the version 173.14.12. Please
Dec 10 03:34:02 Flayme kernel: [ 212.855561] NVRM: make sure that this
kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
Dec 10 03:34:02 Flayme kernel: [ 212.855562] NVRM: components have the same
version.

As a result, any application that uses glx fails (the glx module never
gets loaded). This pretty much kills any 3D applications. The default
XOrg drivers aren't really an option because of the drastically slower
frame rates.

Enabling the proprietary NVIDIA driver loads package nvidia-glx-new (169.12).

The 173.14.12 version is package nvidia-glx-new-envy. However, if I use
the package manager to install this package then the proprietary driver
settings get disabled and I'm back to the standard XOrg modules.
Enabling the proprietary drivers then automatically uninstalls the
nvidia-glx-new-envy package and reloads nvidia-glx-new.

Note that the kernel source package associated with all of this is
nvidia-new-kernel-source-envy (173.14.12). It looks like the bug is
just an issue with the dependency definitions.

*sigh* Just one of the many annoying things I hate about package
managers that makes me consider switching back to Slackware for my
development systems so that I can be in control again.

[Bug 275522] Re: Polish translation of aptitude ke eps complaining "E: Błąd składniowy /us r/share/aptitude/aptitude-defaults.pl:49: Po warto ści występują śmieci"

2008-12-10 Thread Paweł Tęcza
I can confirm that issue on my Intrepid servers. It's very irritating for me,
because now I can't use my favourite Bash alias to upgrade machine:

alias dist-upgrade="sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade"

It doesn't work for me, because now `aptitude update` command always exits
with return code 255 and `aptitude dist-upgrade` command is not invoked.

English means of "E: Błąd składniowy
/usr/share/aptitude/aptitude-defaults.pl:49:
Po wartości występują śmieci" is something like
"E: Syntax error /usr/share/aptitude/aptitude-defaults.pl:49: rubbbish after

[Bug 306824] [NEW] package atokx 1.0-22 failed to install/upgrade: il sottoprocesso post-installation script exited with error code 1

2008-12-10 Thread arf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: atokx

I selected atokx installation.

It regularly asked for atokx directory to install, suggesting "/tmp".

I changed it to "/usr/atokx" (expecting that atokx installation would
create it), and went on.

It then crashed during installation of packages.

ProblemType: Package

We don't derive our packaging from Debian; our udev packages are based
on upstream. If the patch is accepted there, that's ok - but otherwise
you need to update multipath-tools (which should probably use libudev
instead of scsi_id directly)

Yes, it is still. Under 8.10 and 9.04 too. We could resolv this trouble when
in the program we set the next parameter: Preferences->General->"When
launching the game"...>Terminate XQF.
Without this option XQF will be zombie and eats almost all forces of
processor(s).

[Bug 292054] Re: Some drivers take too long to associate (Was: network-manager 0.7 always asks for WPA passphrase)

2008-12-10 Thread jasonwc
I'm still having timeout problems with the new package. PEAPv0/MSCHAPv2
will occasionally connect whereas EAP-TLS consistently fails to connect.
The bizarre part is that the majority of the time the RADIUS server
doesn't even get a request for authentication, and when it does get a
request, the user is authenticated properly, yet the connection still
fails. I know there is no issue with the RADIUS server because with
Juniper or Intel's supplicant, authentication takes 1-3 seconds, at
most.

I have also noticed that after a successful connection, I can reconnect
without re-authenticating with the RADIUS server despite the fact that
my RADIUS server does not have pre-authentication or session resumption
enabled. All three windows supplicants (Juniper Access Client, Intel
ProSet Wireless Client, and XP's supplicant) re-authenticate upon a new
connection attempt. However, there is absolutely no activity in the
FreeRadius debug output when network-manager reconnects. In addition,
75% of connection attempts do not lead to an authentication attempt with
the RADIUS server. Of those that do, authentication is always
successful, but network-manager doesn't always connect properly. As I
mentioned earlier, I have yet to connect once successfully with EAP-TLS.

[Bug 289261] Re: Asus M50VM-DVD doesn't mount and can not be ejected

The same problem is happening with my laptop Asus M50vm-b2 on kubuntu intrepid

"compatible", but with this setting the system is slower (this is a big
problem) and MS Vista doesn't boot (and this only in rare occasions is a
problem).
Any chance to fix this bug?

2008-12-10 Thread wolfger
Fernando, thanks for resurrecting this bug. I have just confirmed the
same behavior exists on Intrepid as well. I'm not sure this is an apturl
bug, though. I think it may belong to Firefox. I'll re-open this against
both groups.

Same situation here: Mainboard Intel DQ45CB (quad core); kernel
2.6.27-9-generic.
I disabled HPET and can now confirm that logs are clean (no flooding).
Hopefully the new -10 kernel will fix it!

[Bug 306834] [NEW] Please split the front-end and the back-end in 2 separated packages

2008-12-10 Thread HNT
Public bug reported:

Hi,

If I want to install Virtualbox-ose on a GNOME desktop, I will need to install
qt4. Virtualbox is designed in a client/server way. So we should be able to
split virtualbox-ose into 2 separated packages : virtualbox-ose-common and
virtualbox-ose-qt. The latter should depend on virtualbox-ose-common (the
backend) and vboxgtk should also depend on virtualbox-ose-common.
Therefore, the user wouldn't have to install extra packages that he doesn't
need/want.

Regards,

[Bug 306835] [NEW] vmware-guestd crashing

[Bug 110899] Re: workspace-switcher needs to work with dualhead setup

2008-12-10 Thread Peter Adolphs
Are the later comments refering to the same bug as the original post?
The original bug description is not very clear. Is it ok to update it so
it only includes the description of the actual bug all the comments seem
to refer to (workspace switcher/libwnck is not able to handle dual head
setups)? The feature request ("allow moving of apps from a workspace on
one monitor to another workspace on the other") should be filed
separately.
