[Bug 272241] Re: Kernel panics when using 8.10 on Thinkpad T61p in docking station

2008-10-24 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Larry,

Care to try installing the linux-backports-modules package. I've had
confirmation from other bug reporters who were having kernel panics with
the iwlwifi drivers that it resolved the panics. The linux-backports-
modules package most recently pulled in an updated version of the
compat-wireless stack:

https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-2.6.27

linux-backports-modules-2.6.27 (2.6.27-7.3) intrepid; urgency=low

  [Tim Gardner]

  * Added iwlwifi firmware
  * Added the upstream compat-wireless-2.6 tree.
  * Updated compat-wireless to wireless-testing tag master-2008-10-14
  * Set CONFIG_WIRELESS_OLD_REGULATORY=y by default.

Some more information if anyone wants to work on it without apport output.
Doing an:

Process 29887 detached

touching the missing file results in it passing this point and
segfaulting when it can't find
/home/patrick/.openoffice.org2/user/config/images_human.zip

Now, this is on a clean install (over and over) and this directory,
~/.openoffice.org2 and it's contents was created by openoffice on first
running just before it faults because something is missing there.

@Marius Gedminas, can you comment which kernel version you were using?
This can be found by doing 'cat /proc/version_signature' . Additionally
the usually kernel debugging information is found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Confirmation that this
still occurs with the 2.6.27 Intrepid kernel would be great.
Additionally, the e1000e bug I commented on earlier here should be
resolved. Thanks.

(Just basic use aboard some pretty meaty hardware). I just recently
noticed the message in the log after remembering to check it.

System does slow down frequently and hang without kernel panics, which
suggests scheduler problems.

Regrettably my previous logs have been erased so I have no way of
finding out whether old lockups were caused by the same issue. I was
actually away when this happened and returned hours later to find my
computer in a panicked state. At this point I am just guessing that this
bug killed it since it is the last thing in my log.

I am attaching my syslog, as well as user.log and daemon.log...

For quick reference, here is the offending snippet from syslog, line 72:
Oct 24 11:52:43 dylan-laptop kernel: [17183.342141] BUG: scheduling while
atomic: swapper/0/0x0100

Here is something I found in daemon.log a few seconds before the crash:
Oct 24 11:13:07 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 7 -> 6
Oct 24 11:13:07 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 6 -> 7
Oct 24 11:51:47 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 7 -> 6
Oct 24 11:51:47 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 6 -> 7
Oct 24 11:52:22 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 7 -> 6
Oct 24 11:52:22 dylan-laptop NetworkManager: (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 6 -> 7
That event doesn't happen very often, so may be related. Still possibly a
coincidence.

The event at 17:31 and onwards is restarting after a hard power off.

[Bug 270455] Re: nv driver does not use correct color depth - gradient banding

Upstream says...

The nv driver currently does not detect the presence of 6-bit panels and won't
enable dithering by default. Please try running

xrandr --output LVDS --set dither 1

to see if it resolves the problem.

oss_test_launchpad, please try this and report back on the upstream bug.
Thanks.

[Bug 288974] [NEW] routines in src/pro/ not included by default

2008-10-24 Thread Eymen Alyaz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnudatalanguage

after clean installation try to call the routine MEAN.

according to http://aramis.obspm.fr/~coulais/IDL_et_GDL/Matrice_IDLvsGDL.html#M

the routine should be included, but instead I found it in
/usr/share/doc/gnudatalanguage/examples/pro which is not in the default !path

would be nice if all routines from src/pro would be in default

[Bug 253817] Re: Suspend/hibernate immediately resumes on Medion MD96420 laptop

2008-10-24 Thread Jim Louvau
Intrepid beta (2.6.27) actually caused me to start having this problem
when it didn't exist (for me) under 8.04. Suspend to RAM seems to
complete including drive spindown and immediately resumes. Hibernate
works perfectly. FWIW after the instant-resume suspend, an attempt to
reboot will hang right before the reboot. Shutdown in the same scenario
works fine. All-in-all very strange.

Dual core Athlon w/nVidia chipset (MSI laptop).

Well, I'm happy to say that it works, without this patch, the kernel is
correctly detects GPE storm and starts working in polling mode instead
of interrupt mode.

Oct 24 23:29:13 mark-laptop kernel: [0.600610] ACPI: EC: non-query
interrupt received, switching to interrupt mode
Oct 24 23:29:13 mark-laptop kernel: [0.608051] ACPI: EC: GPE storm
detected, disabling EC GPE
Oct 24 23:29:13 mark-laptop kernel: [1.108037] ACPI: EC: missing
confirmations, switch off interrupt mode.
Oct 24 23:29:13 mark-laptop kernel: [1.153390] ACPI: EC: GPE = 0x17, I/O:
command/status = 0x66, data = 0x62
Oct 24 23:29:13 mark-laptop kernel: [1.153390] ACPI: EC: driver started in

[Bug 288969] Re: upgrade hardy to intrepid does not install nvidia drivers xorg.conf broken

2008-10-24 Thread bugmenot
this is the Intrepid RC release note
>nVidia "legacy" video support

The 71 and 96 series of proprietary nVidia drivers, as provided by the
nvidia-glx-legacy and nvidia-glx packages in Ubuntu 8.04, are not
compatible with the X.Org included in Ubuntu 8.10. Users with the nVidia
TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4 chipsets
are affected and will be transitioned on upgrade to the free nv driver
instead. This driver does not support 3D acceleration.

Users of other nVidia chipsets that are supported by the 173 or 177
driver series will be transitioned to the nvidia-glx-173 or nvidia-
glx-177 package instead. However, unlike drivers 96 and 71, drivers 173
and 177 are only compatible with CPUs that support SSE (e.g. Intel
Pentium III, AMD Athlon XP or higher). Systems with older CPUs will also
be transitioned to the nv driver on upgrade.

[Bug 45021] Re: including "omnibook" module would help with ACPI support on HP laptops

No, the module is not included in the intrepid kernel. For those who want it,
download the source here:
http://packages.kirya.net/debian/pool/main/o/omnibook/omnibook-source_2.20070211+svn20071217-1_all.deb

Install prerequisite packages:
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
Next, install the .deb file you downloaded (double-click in GUI or sudo dpkg -i
in terminal). This will place a tarball in /usr/src, so:
cd /usr/src
sudo tar xzvf omnibook.tar.bz2
cd modules/omnibook
sudo make install

[Bug 12637] Re: LCD Brightness on Laptop Always Set Very Low at Boot

2008-10-24 Thread Bertilo
I just tested Kubuntu 8.10 RC 1. The bug is still there. I didn't
install. I just tested a live CD session.

Actually the bug is worse now: My brightness controls only manage to
switch between "dark as hell" and "pretty dark" (back and forth).
"Pretty dark" is much too dark to do any work.

Maybe "echo blacklist video | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/local" will
still work as a temporary solution (it's good enough for me), but I
can't test that without actually installing (and I'm not sure I want to
do that since KDE4 is not really usable yet).

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-10-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I tested the commands, Thierry, and there was no difference. I didn't
really hold out a lot of hope, though, because I don't run the WPA
supplicant. Everything works perfectly when I umount the CIFS
filesystems before shutting down. I also found that Suspend and
Hibernate modes work better too (as an aside).

Strange, umountnfs.sh (I double checked it for cifs) runs before
networking so of course one would have to think everything would be
okay. Does the logging off of the Gnome session, ending the Network
Manager in the notification area, have something to do with it? I
wonder what would happen if the networking was all static
startup/shudown entries and network manager was never run (or even
uninstalled).

[Bug 247889] Re: SiS 190/191 on ASUS P5SD2-VM dont detect link status / dont send traffic

2008-10-24 Thread pablomme
This sounds like a good case to bypass the freeze, since
(a) it's a one-liner,
(b) it's hardware-specific,
(c) these motherboards are fairly new -> number of people affected will
increase substantially if not fixed, and
(d) it's been merged upstream.
However the criteria in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates seem to
disagree...

Leann, thanks very much for making the case for this bugfix, whatever
the outcome.

[Bug 257477] Re: dictionary-update

2008-10-24 Thread JackPotte
The Ubuntu default dictionary,
when we try to add an entry,
isn't present in the initial list,
show us an unlinked URL.

Moreover, this dictionary has to be upgraded with :

0) The 2.0 mode, with picture, video, etymology (languages and years of
beginning), phonetic (written and sound), conjugation, usual
expressions, derived terms, translations, synonyms/antonyms,
homonyms/paronyms, hyponyms/hyperonyms, meronyms/holonyms, anagrams and
references.

1) Black wallpaper with colored fonts, for energy and eyes preservation.

2) Crossword research.

3) Print link for all objects (arrays, pictures, schemes...), with
translations (eg: foreign meronyms).

4) Link towards articles to achieve and external links to include in the
dictionary (eg: I offer a 15 000 entries list of homonyms & false
friends in the chapter 4 of homonymme.eu)

5) Photo, sound and video edition interface, with history.

6) An option for page reading, with several voices at a choice, and the
possibility to read some pages with video plugins in addition (karaoke,
colored fonts, films, video algorithms).

7) Download version for PDA and mobile phone with regular updates.

Cool Addition of new models : false-friends, transparent words, real
friends or international paronyms.

9) Listing requests from definitions, eg: hyponyms of horse in 2
selected languages, all English + French + Spanish false friends, all
etymologies of the words ending with the -logy suffix, ordered by
alphabetic order, word occurrences in the selected language, or year of
appearance in all languages.

10) To give the result of the letters and sounds of the sentences by showing
its results according to some selected codes.
It would also give the associated multilingual false-friends, separated in
international homonyms & paronyms.

11) Translate a text by changing its person (eg: replace "he has" by
"you have").
