[Bug 278924] [NEW] huawei e220 (option module?) triggers weird usb behaviour and module crash

2008-10-06 Thread Pedro Francisco
Public bug reported:

Huawei e220 (option module?) triggers weird usb behaviour and module
crash

Title should be renamed but for the time being I won't jump to any
conclusions, appreciate any suggestions :)

NOTE: I don't have the time at this moment to reproduce the error to check if
my procedure is 100% correct, however it is at least the second time it happens
with a fairly recognizable procedure, mentioned below.

So here is the issue:

* Boot Intrepid Ibex 8.04, Linux hostname 2.6.27-4-generic #1 SMP Wed
Sep 24 01:30:51 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux ;

* Use Huawei E220 ;

* Disconnect ;

* Hibernate ;

* Resume ;

At this point, everything's fine.

* Connect Huawei E220 ;

* USB Mouse pointer starts "jumping" on screen ;

* dmesg has the following errors:

[Bug 231069] Re: No proprietary drivers listed. [GeForce 7300 SE]

2008-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Jockey does not show the driver because the "nvidia" kernel module is
not available. Do you have linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 installed? It
gets installed by default, but of course it is possible to uninstall it
or install in "free software only" mode.

[Bug 216358] Re: Samba crashes repeatedly to assert_uid

2008-10-06 Thread berni123
Steve,

this could not be normal - in /etc/security/limits.conf there is no limit
configured, and I dont know,
but could it be unlimited as default in Ubuntuty Hardy ?

Commenting out panic-action does not solve the problem, because it only
prevents the mail
and not the action. smbd still crashes and the users got the windows messages
that their
network drives are not available.

Just a few minuts ago I had crashes after crashes and have to shut down samba
and restart it,
so I commented out the panic action but it smbs still crashes.

Memtest shows now error with the memory and the rest of the system is running
fine.
There is still this strange samba behavior.

[Bug 278927] [NEW] hardy incomplete shutdown no power off Intel 82801G NEC Versa

2008-10-06 Thread afriseun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

Ubuntu 8.04.1 Hardy Heron
Probably similar to some other bugs already reported after approx 2.6.19-xx
computer do not power off after shutting down. The reason for posting a new bug
is that after trying every possible fix, found through launchpad or google, the
problem is still continuing. Bug fixes tried range from disabling Network
Manager (due to error messages shown as part of shutdown) to trying the newer
2.6.27 kernel from Intrepid.
Problem description is that with splash screen on the shutdown continues
normally until progress bar is cleared, hard drive turned off en then get
stuck. Have to be turned of by holding down power button of the laptop. Text
messages show that at the end of shutdown procedure it runs until Power Down
message is shown.
One thing that is somewhat different to similar bug reports is that on
Hibernate the computer freezes before completing the power off. But every
Shutdown after coming out of Hibernate is successful in powering off the
machine. I feel as if this should be a strong hint as to the source of the
problem but my experience is far to limited to find it.
It should probably be mentioned that due to the fact that this laptop is based
heavily on Intel components (Intel motherboard 82801G and graphics controller
Intel 945) I had a hard time getting the system up and running initially with
Hardy (mostly graphics card related).

Please let me know about any further information I can provide.

Yup. I have 4.1.2 from the PPA.

I see the Konqueror "Connection to Server Refused" when what I should be
seeing is the cached page from polipo (or a _polipo_ error page).

[Bug 199165] Re: Automounting removable storage doesn't always honour the utf8 mount option

2008-10-06 Thread Vítor Souza
Just so you know, this is fixed in Intrepid (Kubuntu 8.10) beta. At
least it works for me here and I did no patching (since I didn't know
what to do - see my previous comment). I just kept updating the system
until finally one day I gave it a shot again and it worked.

[Bug 278195] Re: Incorrect encoding for the synchronized entries

2008-10-06 Thread Johan Kiviniemi
** Description changed:

  I’m running intrepid, opensync 0.22-2, opensync-plugin-gnokii 0.22-1,
  libgnokii3 0.6.26.dfsg-2.

When entries are synchronized from the phone (Nokia 6220) to evolution
/file-sync, any umlauts are replaced with question marks.

When entries are synchronized to the phone, any umlauts are replaced
with the letter preceding them repeated.

‘gnokii --getphonebook ME 1 end -v’ prints the umlauts just fine.

In the discussion at http://opensync.org/ticket/809, it became clear
- that the bug is in gnokii 0.6.26 and has been fixed in 0.6.27, which
- apparently should be released today.
+ that the bug is in gnokii 0.6.26 and has been fixed in 0.6.27.

Could gnokii 0.6.27 still make it into intrepid, or must the fix be
  backported to 0.6.26?

libgnokii 0.6.27 has a new SONAME; a no-change rebuild of libopensync-
  plugin-gnokii would be needed.

[Bug 258486] Re: X fall in failsafe mode after install if nvidia restricted drivers are installed during LiveCD session in intrepid

2008-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Two options here:
- Fix the nvidia-glx-* packages to auto-rebuild the drivers on boot; this is
already the way it is *supposed* to work, right Alberto?
- Fix the casper hook to also copy the generated .ko files. This is desirable
for efficiency reasons, but will also paper of the the auto-rebuild bug.

IMHO we should do both.

2008-10-06 Thread Ronan Jouchet
Hello,

I don't think it's a good idea to replace this text field by one, because it
removes the possibility to print several ranges at once, separated by commas.
Example:
1-3,87-88 will print pages 1,2,3 and 87,88
That's a feature I actually use a _lot_.

What we need here is a descriptive textbox above the current textfield
giving an example. Like "1-3,87-88 will print pages 1,2,3 and 87,88".

And BTW, I'm not sure this bug should be linked to evince. Isn't the
print dialog a shared GNOME component? Does somebody know where it's
from?

Thanks!

[Bug 276518] Re: Xorg hangs due to EQ overflowing when EXA enabled

2008-10-06 Thread dkasak
I'm the user who originally reported the bug in the forums. I was going
to log a bug myself, but someone beat me to it ... unfortunately getting
some important details wrong.

This bug most certainly also affects XAA ( which I did clearly note in
the forums ). Could someone PLEASE at least rename this bug and remove
the 'with EXA enabled' bit. Alternatively I can enter a separate bug for
the default ( XAA ) case.

> I declined the Intrepid task since we do not ship EXA turned on by
default, due to concerns about bugs like this one.

Frankly I'm a bit perplexed at this comment. Consensus with the radeon
developers is that EXA is more stable than XAA at this point, fixing
some lockups when starting some OpenGL apps, amongst other things. I
have used EXA on my Radeon for at least a year. Anyway ... I'm not too
concerned about Ubuntu not 'supporting' EXA at this point ... but I am
concerned that I can't start X without DRI disabled.

So I've done some 'git bisect' work with xf86-video-ati. I went back a
couple of months. Note that I've been running 'git current' of xserver,
mesa, and friends on Gentoo for the past couple of years ( yeah, cvs
current before the git migration ). Anyway, I *can't* find a particular
point in the xf86-video-ati history that broke things. ie I don't think
the issue is in xf86-video-ati. I have also git-bisected libdrm and the
radeon module, back as far as I can actually build things. No luck here
either. Now I'm building a 2.6.26 kernel. If this doesn't work out, then
I'm betting the problem is in xserver. I will of course report any
successes I have.

But in the meantime, someone please rename this bug.

Yeah, when I get the error, it can be resolved by simply restarting X.
I tried saving the history file and compare them, and restarting
doesn't affect the history file, so that can't be it.

[Bug 278932] [NEW] intrepid boot hangs with ich4 fujitsu siemens box with workaround

2008-10-06 Thread Fritz Heinrichmeyer
Public bug reported:

Hardy kernels and selfcompiled 2.6.27-rc kernels with disabled libata
and enabled ide drivers booted on this year 2002 (i believe) motherboard
with ich4 chipset and celeron 2.4 GHz cpu.

Sorry at the moment i am not able to give more information about the
motherboard (later at home).

I also found a way to use the intrepid linux packages:
adding a line with the word "ata_piix" to /etc/modules and then updating
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-5-generic seems to influence hardware detection in the
right way.

I guess booting a live cd would have hanged on this box, as it uses the
same generic kernel and initramfs?

2008-10-06 Thread Michael Budde
I agree with Ronan, the range field should not be replaced with two
fields.

About the description: you get an example of how to fill the field if
you hover the "Range" text. It would be nice if the description also
showed when hovering the field.

[Bug 278935] [NEW] Intrepid beta shows a regression in ACE active timers

2008-10-06 Thread Vincent Bossier
Public bug reported:

When adapting a simple example code from "The ACE Programmer's Guide"
related to active timers (see attached source code), I observe a
regression in Ubuntu Intrepid Beta. Such code has been working correctly
for years in Ubuntu with libace-5.4.7. The recent upgrade to
libace-5.6.3 seems to explain the regression.

The code example runs a 10 ms timer during 1 second and counts the
timeouts. Compiling and linking against an old libace-5.4.7 leads to
100, the correct value. Compiling and linking against the default
libace-5.6.3 leads to around 50, a big error.

Using bigger periods (100 ms) does not show the problem. Using periods
smaller than 10 ms make the problem even worse.

[Bug 278933] [NEW] Guest samba share stops working when winbind is installed

2008-10-06 Thread rivode
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I have a Samba share configured to provide read/write access without
authenticating. This worked fine until I installed Wine. I removed
wine, and it worked fine again. I narrowed the offending package down
to winbind.

The share is configured like this:

guest only = yes

I also have a read-only share, which works fine regardless of whether
winbind is installed:

Yes, I checked MD5 hash, when I downloaded the package and after
I burned it on a CD (hash of CD). Both were as they should be.

Now I am using Kubuntu 8.04.1 -i386 on K9AMG (ATI RS485/SB600) with
Athlon64 3800+ which is intended to be my working machine.
There was no complication at all. Actually the machine got ready
as soon as Kubuntu was installed without any manual adjustment.

I also upgraded on MSI4AM-LSR with Athlon XP 2500+ which was my
previous working machine, from Ubuntu 7.04 through 7.10 to 8.04.1.
Here I got, alas, a resolution problem which I cannot fix by changing
xorg.conf time and again.
One thing I intend to try is to connect my cockpit (keyboard, monitor
and mouse) directly to computers. I am using KVM swich box and
I suddenly remember that I had resolution problem when I used
KVM on installing Ubuntu 7.04 to MSI4M-LSR.
KVM may not be the cause of the current problem but maybe a miracle.

I still maintain that just a line or two of setting of Ubuntu and
Kubuntu may be the cause of difference.

Many thanks for your taking troubles.
Sabby

Ignore my P.S. above - I now know what Casper refers to.

This one worked properly and matches my previous observation re ROM vs

I also tried a DVD-RW burner in an external USB enclosure on system #4:

This worked properly but as it was not on a motherboard IDE channel I
don't know if this data point should be included.

[Bug 262050] Re: lsb_release takes a lot of time and is being used during the boot

2008-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Oops, wrong bug.

This is actually wontfix in jockey. We do need to know OS vendor and
version. Falling back to reading /etc/lsb-release would be faster, but
use a non-standardized interface. What should *really* happen is to
replace the /usr/bin/lsb_release implementation with something much
faster. It currently starts up a full Python interpreter just to read a
couple of values from a simple text file.

[Bug 242966] Re: snd_pcsp can take precedence of soundcards

2008-10-06 Thread Adam Porter
I'm using:

alsa-utils:
  Installed: 1.0.17-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1.0.17-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.17-0ubuntu2 0
100 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

linux-image-generic:
  Installed: 2.6.27.5.5
  Candidate: 2.6.27.5.5
  Version table:
 *** 2.6.27.5.5 0
100 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I'm running Hardy but am testing the Intrepid kernel because of a few minor
hardware issues with the Hardy kernel.

I just rebooted twice, and the first time the pcsp device was the
primary ALSA device. artsd went nuts with CPU usage, causing it to quit
because of CPU overload, and even after restarting artsd, I still
couldn't get any sound out of Amarok. I rebooted the second time, and
now the Intel HDA device is the primary ALSA device and sound is working
fine.

Maybe this bug isn't completely fixed yet?

** Changed in: alsa-utils (Ubuntu Intrepid)
   Status: Fix Released => Confirmed

[Bug 229654] Re: muliples crashes after 6.06 to 8.04 x64 upgrade

2008-10-06 Thread berni123
I have a similar stack trace maybe related to this, happens often a
network user tries to access a network device, he got the windows
messages that the network share is not available, smbd crashes and after
that, the user can access the network share. But from time to time, the
crash continues and only a complee restart of samba has to be done.

[Bug 278942] [NEW] Kernel 2.6.27-5 breaks Intel graphics

[Bug 278941] [NEW] glslideshow keeps showing the same image

2008-10-06 Thread machrider
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

Using Kubuntu 8.04, I'm unable to get glslideshow to show more than one
image. It seems to have chosen one image and always shows that image,
despite being pointed at a directory with several images in it.

I used xscreensaver-demo to configure the pictures directory.

I tried the hacks recommended here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=212512

Duration and pan are set to the same value (10).

Doesn't matter what I do, glslideshow just shows a single image (and
crossfades every 10 seconds as if it was actually changing images, but
it's always the same one).

[Bug 278911] Re: "Segmentation fault" error

2008-10-06 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with. Please follow these instructions to have
apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the
automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Once you have done this,
repeat the steps necessary to recreate the problem.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-10-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Can you please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Jockey is right in not
trying to mess with an already invalid xorg.conf any further, since
there is no chance we can get it fixed again without totally throwing

How did it get broken in the first place?

2008-10-06 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Public bug reported:

In a freshly installed intrepid beta with full language support
installed, Pidgin spellchecking doesn't work with my locale. It works if
I force it into french (France). This is a regression as it used to work
in hardy.

[Bug 139570] Re: Documents in swiss-french are not spell checked

2008-10-06 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Latest intrepid + François Marier PPA + deb http://ppa.launchpad.net
/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main (openoffice 3)

cat /usr/share/myspell/infos/ooo/hunspell-fr
DICT fr FR fr_FR
DICT fr BE fr_FR
DICT fr CA fr_FR
DICT fr CH fr_FR
DICT fr LU fr_FR

But Openoffice.org doesn't show French (suisse) as being installed

Pidgin is saying everything that I write is badly spell checked but
that's another bug (maybe) : Bug #278943

[Bug 277930] Re: scrolling in Firefox 3.03 with Hardy loads cpu 90-100%

2008-10-06 Thread Jonathan Carter
I can confirm that scrolling in Firefox is quite CPU intensive. This is
with Firefox 3.0.1 on hardy with a ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Xpress
1250 display chip (not sure if that's even relevant here).
