[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST/XV_SATURATION to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma/contrast)

2008-06-21 Thread Okko7
@Thomas: So is there anything else I can do to fix this bug on my
computer?

The funny thing is that this bug did not appear from the beginning on,
but only since about two weeks (may be that I had Video Player and
MPlayer running in the same time). So I guess if I'd reinstall ubuntu,
it would work again, but isn't there an easier way (for example
reinstall only a few files)? I have tried to reinstall only totem, but
without success.

Simon

[Bug 228046] Re: Wildcards broken in sudo / sudoers

2008-06-21 Thread pschmied
Hello? Is anyone even reading this? I'd be okay with a "you're wrong"
but it seems bad form to leave a bug tagged as a security bug undecided
for over a month.

Is sudo not important? I understand this isn't the most common use
case, but having bugs in critical bits of your security infrastructure
isn't cool.

[Bug 241844] [NEW] device-mapper fails after upgrade to hardy

2008-06-21 Thread Stephen Hill
Public bug reported:

device mapper fails when using hardy kernels, after upgrade to hardy from gutsy.
If I use one of my pre-built 2.6.24.6 kernels (built from kernel.org source) it
woks fine.
I am beginning to suspect evms as I know it has been deprecated, and which I do
have installed, but I'm not sure how to rectify the situation.

On boot I get:

[Bug 172602] Re: Gmail Notify does not use firefox as default browser

2008-06-21 Thread markba
In a GNOME-environment (Ubuntu), the browser to start should look at the
following location in gconf-editor:
/desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec (currently in my situation: firefox)

This can be done while installing or even runtime.

Either way, gmail-notify is then configuration free (at least for this
particular issue).

[Bug 241846] [NEW] plugin fails to start when a MMC/SD card is inserted

2008-06-21 Thread Florent Xicluna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-sensors-plugin

when an SD card is present in the SD/MMC card reader, the plugin fails
with error message in a popup:

x--x
"hddtemp" was not executed correctly although it is executable ... not being
setuid root.

An easy but dirty solution is to run "chmod u+s /usr/sbin/hddtemp" as
root user and restart the plugin or its panel.

Calling "/usr/sbin/hddtemp -n -q /dev/mmcblk0" gave the following error:
ERREUR: /dev/mmcblk0: Impossible de détecter le type de bus (ou ce type de bus
est inconnu)
x--x
Approximated translation:
ERROR: /dev/mmcblk0: Unable to detect the bus type (or this bus type is unknown)
x--x

AFAIK the bug is due to the plugin trying to read temperature of the SD card,
which is not available.
The plugin should catch this error and ignore it silently.
If I insert the card later, once the panel is started, I don't meet such error.

Note: the beginning of the error message is irrelevant to this kind of
error.

[Bug 241845] [NEW] Wesnoth is unable to have a normal quit. Only kill -9 then can terminate the process.

2008-06-21 Thread idyllic
Public bug reported:

I tried Wesnoth 1.4.1 from Ubuntu repo and 1.4.3 from GetDeb. Both
yielded the same results. Whenever I press the Quit button, Wesnoth
window will still stay on the desktop albeit I can't interact with it
anymore. top in terminal shows that Wesnoth process is sleeping. During
this period, the CPU usage for Wesnoth process reaches 100%. I only can
kill it with -9 switch.

I tried to start Wesnoth in terminal in hope to get any log but there
isn't any information relevant. However if I don't kill the sleeping
Wesnoth process, in 2 minutes, the whole laptop will freeze and I have
to do a hard reboot. Below is the relevant portion of the kernel log
after I force reboot.

[Bug 241851] [NEW] NetworkManager 3g/gprs connects and immediately disconnects

2008-06-21 Thread Berend De Schouwer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

network-manager:
  Installed: 0.6.6-0ubuntu5
  Candidate: 0.6.6-0ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 0.6.6-0ubuntu5 0
500 http://za.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I can configure a GPRS connection with NetworkManager to connect to the
Cellphone provider, using the front-end. However, as soon as
NetworkManager is connected, it disconnects immediately.

It starts pppd, which starts chat, which connects.
pppd then successfully authenticates to the service provider.
pppd then starts LCP configure requests to get the IP/DNS, etc.
And then networkmanager kills it...
And then pppd (on this side) sends an LCP TermReq.

NetworkManager shouldn't kill working connections.

In /var/log/syslog:

[Bug 241731] Re: no sound through ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
I think this is an update problem from Hardy:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-generic

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  linux-restricted-modules-generic: Depends:

E: Broken packages

[Bug 241857] [NEW] Transmisson does not inhibit suspend in gnome-power-manager

2008-06-21 Thread soliver84
Public bug reported:

Hello,
my hardy machine enters s3 after 10 min of inactivity.
My problem is that transmission does not inhibit suspend while
downloading/uploading.
So I have to change my gnome-power-manager settings every time i download
something.
I found this page explaining the mechanism of inhibiting suspend in
gnome-power-manager via dbus.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GnomePowerManagerInactiveSleep
I think transmission should implement that.

Regards oliver

[Bug 189637] Re: upgrading gutsy to Hardy fails

2008-06-21 Thread donfranio
I also have this Problem.

~$ update-manager -V
update-manager: version 0.81

Also tried this one:
~$ sudo do-release-upgrade
told me to report /var/log/dist-upgrade/[apt|main].log
so i looked into them.

/var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log ends with a line as follows:
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade'

so i looked up the file:
~# file /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade
/etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade: broken symbolic link to
`../mods-available/proxy.conf'

so i tried to lookup the Package which should contain this file.
~# dpkg -S /etc/mods-available/proxy.conf
dpkg: /etc/mods-available/proxy.conf not found.

"mods-available" looked some kind of familiar to me so i did:
~# dpkg -S mods-available | grep proxy
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy_ajp.load
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy_ftp.load
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy_connect.load
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy.conf
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy_balancer.load
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy.load
apache2.2-common: /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy_http.load

could it be that the update-manager has anything to do with the apache
web-server?
i tried to reset the broken symbolic link.
~# mv /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade.buggy
ln -s /etc/apache2/mods-available/proxy.conf /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade
now i retried:
~# do-release-upgrade

seems to work now. As my System is about to upgrade at the moment, i have to
finish this report.
All i changed, was that broken link.
I don't understand, why apache-config-files are needet, but something works
better now!

[Bug 241731] Re: no sound through ALSA

2008-06-21 Thread Christophe Dumez
No, looks like this is not simply an update problem.

I tried this kernel (with restricted modules installable and installed):
Linux chris-laptop 2.6.26-1-generic #1 SMP Fri Jun 13 13:22:43 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I still don't have any sound (exception GDM intro, but no gnome intro
after login).

[Bug 241859] [NEW] Aliasing a merged buddy should apply to container or all members, not one random member

2008-06-21 Thread Chris Boyle
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 241858 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241858

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

If I have several buddies who are the same person, and I merge them, and
I then alias that merged buddy, I expect my chosen name to persist,
whichever of the individual accounts is online. What actually seems to
happen is that clicking "Alias..." on the container just picks one
member to store the alias against, and then if that member is offline
and others are online, the name of an online member is used instead,
giving the impression that the my chosen alias has been lost. I think
aliasing a merged buddy needs to either store the alias separately from
the members, such that it applies to all of them, or simply apply the
alias to all members.

@nexus: The workaround most likely works, because the files firefox 2

the works [1]. The search engines in firefox are all OpenSearch

[Bug 241862] [NEW] Unexpected abortion of program when switching between Internet radio stations

2008-06-21 Thread ar-jar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox aborts when repeatedly switching between some (but not all)
Internet radio stations.

It happens for instance when switching between mms://wm-live.sr.se/SR-
P3Svea-High and http://www.sky.fm/mp3/hit70s.pls, always when returning
to the P3Svea station. Restarting the P3Svea stations without playing
something else in between works fine. When starting the P3Svea channel,
the player restarts the buffering several times before it actually
starts to play which looks kind of odd.

I know something similar has been reported earlier but the tickets seem
closed.

This (unfortunately :-)) works fine in the same Ubuntu version that runs
on my old Intel-based laptop. The laptop doesn't exhibit the weird
restart of buffering when playing the P3Svea either. So this may be
hardware / architecture related. Or maybe I have managed somehow to
install different codecs on the two computers?

I'm running Rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu7 and all the latest updates of
Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD Phenom 9750 system.

Happy to provide any assistance that may help you.

Thanks! /Arto

[Bug 241861] [NEW] Save youtube videos from totem

2008-06-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have been using the youtube totem plugin a lot lately, and I think it
would be useful to have the possibility to use it to save videos to
disk. It already seems to copy the actual video to /tmp, so I guess
technically it shouldn't be too difficult.

You already get a menu when you right-click the videos in the sidebar,
so it would only be a matter of including a third menu item, "save to
disk", which would span a save dialogue.

I'm attaching a mockup.

[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-06-21 Thread Henry Wertz
I've found a kludgy "fix" for this (that doesn't just involve
removing nm, since it's wireless and wired handling are nice). In my
case, I have a Inspiron 2200 with wifi set via ndiswrapper (which works
fine) and an aircard (Verizon PC5740) which worked except for the
"Offline mode" problem. So it's the case where if I don't have wifi,
and dial via CDMA, I get the "Work Offline" stuff going on.

So, if I go into /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf, I inserted in
line 18 (all on one line):

(That's in the 'policy at_console="true" ' section of the file in
case yours is arranged a little differently for whatever reason.)

This file seems to be checked on-the-fly, I could change this and
see an immediate effect on firefox (although I rebooted to check for
side effects).

 Consequences:
This blocks firefox and any other app's attempt to get the online/offline
state from NetworkManager, which makes it (and probably any other apps that try
to check NetworkManager) decide Networkmanager is not there and assume online
state. It ALSO blocks nm-applets access to this though...
Since nm-applet can't get the online/offline state from NetworkManager
either, it doesn't show online state properly (it'll show the exclamation mark
while the network is up and running fine for static IP wifi and ethernet)...
For regular ol' DHCP wifi, it does still show the signal bars (since blocking
"status" doesn't block wifi signal strength info).
Also, under "manual configuration" the "Roaming mode" text changes to
"This network interface is not configured", and the checked "Roaming mode"
checkboxes change to uncheckd "Enable this connection" checkboxes. But the
interface seems consistent and to behave itself. Problem solved as far as I'm
concerned, until I got to NetworkManager 0.7!

[Bug 241867] [NEW] Display brightness requires manual intervention

2008-06-21 Thread Joss Winn
Public bug reported:

I first reported this as bug #214440, thinking it was gnome-power-
manager related. It's not. The display automatically dims on boot when
drivers are being loaded, before any Gnome stuff is introduced. Please
see that bug for some log output.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/214440

I can control display brightness using the keyboard but the settings in
Power Manager preferences, seem to be ignored. For example, when I
unplug the AC power, the screen dims, but when I plug it back in again,
the screen notifier shows the brightness increasing to about 90% (it is
set to be 100% on AC power) but in fact the screen remains dimmed and
does not actually increase. If I unplug the AC power again, the display
brightness decreases and so on until after unplugging the AC power four
times, the display brightness is at its lowest level and plugging in AC
power makes no difference to the actual brightness. I can rectify this
by using the FN-F11 keys.

I'm running the latest Hardy updates on a Lenovo 3000 N100 Centrino Duo.
I've attached some logs. This is not a recent problem but started
occurring a few months ago.

Thanks for any help solving this.

[Bug 225943] Re: .tex file not associated with latexsuite by default

2008-06-21 Thread Albrecht Mühlenschulte
When opening a new Buffer named .tex the filetype in vim is
set to "plaintex" (viewable via ":set filetype"). This filetype is not
connected with the vim-latexsuite, which is totally right, since .tex is
also the extension for plain-original-knuth-like TeX-Files (which are
not supportet by vimLaTeX-suite).

When opening a file which is named .tex the filetype is set
to "plaintex" UNLESS the file begins with "\documentclass..." which is a
strong evidence the file is a LaTeX and not a plainTeX-file. In this
case vim sets the filetype variable to "tex" (and loads vim-
latexplugin).

Files ending to .latex are automatically identified as LaTeX-files.

So it's not a bug, it's a feature ;).

If you want to write a LaTeX file in a newly created buffer, just type
":set filetype=tex" and everything is the way you want it. If you
neverever will will write a plaintex-file you may put this into your
.vimrc to override the _wise_ defaults:

autocmd BufNewFile,Bufread *.tex set filetype=tex

[Bug 241868] [NEW] fast-user-switch-applet doesn't switch back to login it creates

2008-06-21 Thread fubarbundy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

Installed system - 8.04 64-bit with updates to 21st June 2008, two accounts,
f-u-s-a applet running on both. Gnome 2.22.2, f-u-s-a 2.22.0
Hardware - Intel G965 motherboard, Core 2 Duo, Intel GMA X3100 graphics
Desktop effects - enabled on account A, disabled (owing to xorg/Compiz
limitation) on account B

Steps to reproduce:

- with all users logged out, log in via GDM to account A
- switch to account B (i.e. log in) using f-u-s-a and type password
- switch back to account A using f-u-s-a
- try to switch back to account B using f-u-s-a - nothing happens

Additional info:

- each account's applet correctly lists users and status at each step
including the final one - it still shows the menu, just doesn't do
anything

Workaround - removing and re-adding the applet after the final step
results in the switcher in account A becoming able to switch to account

[Bug 19767] Re: Kde help search fails too quietly if htdig is not installed

2008-06-21 Thread mugginz
 Cyril BUQUET,

Unfortunately the failure you're having is another example of dash
breaking something.

I did what you suggested
1) sudo apt-get install htdig
2) sudo vi /usr/bin/khc_docbookdig.pl
>>> change : my $findpath = "$kdekdehtmldir/$lang/";
>>> with : my $findpath = "$kdehtmldir/$lang/";
(line 94)

But then had to change the sym link for /bin/sh from dash to bash.
3) sudo mv /bin/sh /bin/sh.old
4) sudo ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh

And then when I re-ran the index build it worked.

Probably would be better to change the script that the help indexer uses
to explicitly call /bin/bash instead of /bin/sh though.

"hardy" release
Does that mean I have to update to an "intermediate" yet unreleased version ?

Thanks

[Bug 241873] [NEW] System goes slow when updates are available

2008-06-21 Thread Tree MendUs
Public bug reported:

The system seems to go slow when updates are available for download, but
haven't been downloaded and installed yet - PC been on continuously for
over 2 to 5 days

Is the system going into some sort of loop while to wait for something
which doesn't happen, and it spends a lot of time waiting there.

Maybe waiting for a non-existant confirmation to download.

Feisty fawn version.

Note down the bottom is the option to flag this as being a security
vulnerability.
It might be handy to have a similar flag to highlight the report as a
"stability vulnerability".

[Bug 239702] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-06-21 Thread Phil Lello
Unfortunately I can't install the debug symbols, I get the following
error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
  evolution-dbgsym: Depends: evolution (= 2.22.2-0ubuntu2) but
2.22.2-0ubuntu1.3 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

This seems especially odd, because apt-cache show evolution-dbgsym shows
version 2.22.1-0ubuntu3, NOT 2.22.2-0ubuntu1.3

[Bug 224876] Re: Hardy does not control the CPU fan properly.

2008-06-21 Thread Tor Håkon Haugen
I've just done the test Mike Hix wrote about on both a ThinkPad x31 and
a ThinkPad x61 (yes, I love the Thinkpads).

On my X61 the fan will be steady somewhere around 3200/3300 rpm. That is
even if it's idle or if I'm doing the sha1sum test.

The X31, on the other hand, it's a lot more interesting since the fan is OFF
when idle. When I ran the sha1sum test it didn't start before the temperature
reached 68 degrees celcius, and then "only" at 3400 rpm. This was however
enough to keep the temperature steady at 70 degrees.
When I stopped the test the fan turned itself off when passing 53 degrees
celcius. Silence is golden.

So my question is, why does the fan in the X61 keep spinning at ~3300 even when
the machine is staying idle?
I must say I prefer the way the X31 handles this problem.

Hope this input is of any value.
Btw, I'm running 32bit Ubuntu on both machines. X61 is running on Hardy and the
X31 is using Gutsy. I can upgrade the X31 and do the same test again if
necessary. Heck, I can even reinstall it. :-)

[Bug 241880] [NEW] Please sync uae 0.8.28-1 (multiverse) from debian unstable (contrib)

2008-06-21 Thread Lionel Le Folgoc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: uae

Hi,

Please sync uae 0.8.28-1 (multiverse) from debian unstable (contrib).

Ubuntu changes have been merged in the debian package.
It builds fine in an up to date intrepid pbuilder.

Thanks.

Debian changelog since the 0.8.25-7ubuntu1 ubuntu revision:
uae (0.8.28-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * rules: Fix bashisms (from 0.8.25-6ubuntu1).
  * New upstream: 0.8.28
Obsolete patches removed for good:
 - close_window_hack (ui rewrite).
 - memory_leaks_in_gui (ui rewrite).
 - fix_save_config_fix (fixed upstream).
 - fix_static_declarations (no compilation issues noticed).
Updated patches:
 - allow_spaces_in_zip_filenames.diff
 - makefile_more_cleaning.diff
 - struct_uae_wrong_fields_name.diff
 - uae_reset_args.diff
Use of SDL gfx is now recommended:
 - rules: Configure with "--with-sdl-gfx".
 - control: Add Build-dep libsdl1.2-dev.
[sdl sound still too unstable]
  * Removing unused/broken patch
preserve_home_in_writing_optionsfile.diff for good.
