Most likely a bug in the XAA implementation of the non-free drivers

[Bug 238789] Re: kernel 2.6.24-19

2008-06-11 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Dear Giovanni, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu
better.

Ok, so you can boot with kernel version 2.6.24-18 but not 2.6.24-19.

We are going to need to know the hardware included in your system, and any
error messages the kernel issues.
Booting the working -18 kernel, please run the following 4 commands, and attach
the resulting files.
 *   uname -a > uname-a.log
 *   cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
 *   dmesg > dmesg.log
 *   sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

It would also help to know any error messages from the -19 kernel. In
/boot/grub/menu.lst, you don't need to comment out the -19 kernel, just
change the "default" option (right at the top) from 0 (1st kernel in the
list) to probably something like 2, which should be the -18 kernel (3rd
in the list). Then try booting the -19 kernel without the "quiet" and
"splash" options, and tell us any error messages you see (taking a
screenshot with a digital camera, or even writing them down by hand and
typing them in here is also fine...

Thank you for your help

[Bug 198528] Re: starting emacs with alltray freezes buffer window

2008-06-11 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Confirmed on Hardy, with Compiz enabled; there is still errant behavior
as well when using Metacity, but Emacs is functional save for the fact
that it refuses to minimize. This is also emacs-snapshot-gtk; I am not
sure if regular emacs would experience the problem or not.

At first, it looks like when Emacs starts Alltray detects two windows,
and the "real" Emacs window isn't the one being captured. If that's the
case, then this isn't a bug in Alltray, per sé; it just means that to
dock Emacs, one would have to always use Alltray in click mode, starting
Emacs first, and Alltray second, and then grabbing the window. There
are a few other applications that will do something like pop up a
useless window first, and since Alltray latches onto the first window
created by the application, that causes some side effects.

If this is correct (I or someone else will have to take a look at the
Emacs sources to see if this is in fact the case), then this would be a
bug only in that Alltray probably should have a different policy in the
way that it attempts to intercept the events for applications.

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-06-11 Thread Joakim Andersson
As far as I could tell from the code, Anoop P B has the correct solution
(which I can see from the output of my g-p-m).

If the battery profile of the (primary) battery isn't good enough
(accuracy less than 40%), no action will be taken, and no warnings will
be shown. This is true even if use_time_for_policy is disabled, which is
just plain stupid. It's also quite unacceptable for most cases, since it
can cause both data loss and file system corruption if the user doesn't
shut down manually in time.

I'm going to make an attempt to fix this later tonight (I'm at work right now)
by adding two things:
1. A check that takes actions even with a "bad" profile when
use_time_for_policy is disabled.
2. A fallback that will use the percentage instead of time if the profile isn't
good enough yet.
If I'm successful, of course I will submit my patch.

I think this bug is actually quite critical since it only affects new
users. (New users of gnome, that is. I recently switched from KDE.)

[Bug 238215] Re: gnome-display-properties only allowing cloned screens

I have similar problem. When using dual screen setup with Intel 945,
everything works as expected. gnome-display-properties shows two
monitors. Now If I select "Clone Screens" checkbox screens are cloned,
that is correct. But problem is that when I now deselect "Clone
Screens", It does not change back to extended desktop setup. And gnome-
display-properties also shows only one monitor.

Only by resetting ~/.gnome2/monitors.xml it is possible to go back to
two monitors/extended desktop setup.

[Bug 239098] [NEW] libgtkhtml3.14-dev: missing dependencies on libenchant-dev, iso-codes for .pc files

2008-06-11 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtkhtml3.14

evolution is failing to build in intrepid because libgtkhtml3.14-dev
needs libenchant-dev and iso-codes for the .pc files provided by each,
but doesn't depend on them:

checking for GTKHTML... configure: error: Package requirements
(libgtkhtml-3.14 >= 3.19.1) were not met:

Package enchant was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `enchant.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'enchant', required by 'libgtkhtml', not found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GTKHTML_CFLAGS
and GTKHTML_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

make: *** [config.status] Error 1

[Bug 239102] [NEW] Customised toolbar item for Previous email is not working.

2008-06-11 Thread Nicholas A. Suppiah
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

After a fresh installation of Thunderbird on Ubuntu 7.10, I can retrieve
all my emails. It is sorted by date and is unthreaded. Details of the
system is as follows:

# apt-cache policy thunderbird
thunderbird:
  Installed: 2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10.0
  Candidate: 2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10.0
  Version table:
 *** 2.0.0.14+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10.0 0
500 http://my.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy-updates/main Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com gutsy-security/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.0.0.6+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://my.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/main Packages

The problem:
I open an email and I need to add the Next and Previous items to the Toolbar.
Right click on the toolbar, choose Customise and drag both the Next and
Previous items to the toolbar.

When I click the Next button, I can move to the next email. But it is not the
mail as I sorted by date, it shows the unread email.
The Previous button doesnt do anything since there isnt any more unread email.
Am I missing some steps or is the item broken? I cant seem to see the previous
emails according to the sorted list.

[Bug 40058] Re: update-manager shows no changelog for various packages

2008-06-11 Thread Rusty
As of today, still seeing this issue in Hardy. cpp, gcc in the updates
today.

Particularly frustrating in that these are tools used to compile
applications, and while I am sure that the package maintainers rebuilt
their keys and authentication after the recent ssl/ssh fiasco, I'm
really uncomfortable with compilers showing up without an explanation as
to why this one is 'better' than the previous release. Along with the
ssl/ssh vulnerability that showed up, getting this bug fixed would very
much improve comfort, and trust in the process.

The saving grace at the moment is that these are only showing up in
'proposed' packages and not 'critical' from what I've seen. As a result
the people most likely to encounter the problem are those who can find
out for themselves what the update covers. However there's a roll-up
coming down the pike and I think there are going to be people concerned
very soon. Granted even then most people will not walk through the
changelogs for all of the packages that get updated, but what happens
when they see one or two packages that don't present a changelog and
decide to wait on them till they do show a changelog, and never see it?
It makes it look like packages are being distributed by someone who
isn't familiar with the process.

Hmm, this doesn't belong to this bug. However, we will regularaly
update langpacks through hardy-proposed, so those fixes will become
available sooner or later.

If you have a critical bug about langpacks, please open a bug against
the right language-pack-XX package and get my attention on IRC if this
requires instant action.

OK, here they come. By the way, I noticed two more things yesterday:

1) Hibernate works, even though suspend doesn't
2) Probably irrelevant, but: just before the screen turns black (both for
hibernate and suspend) it turns bright green for a fraction of a second. This
never happened before.

[Bug 239103] [NEW] Gnome 2.22.2 System -> Administration -> Services does not reflect changes

[Bug 239107] [NEW] kvm - guest freebsd 7 - reboot problems

2008-06-11 Thread Savvas Radević
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

Ubuntu hardy heron 8.04 amd64
I've used this guide to get my virtualization kit:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM

KVM backend, libvirt-bin toolbox and virt-manager as the graphical manager.
I have installed successfully the FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE as a guest operating
system.

The problem appears to be when rebooting the machine, specifically:
a) After the installing FreeBSD using the 7.0-release iso image. Upon finishing
the FreeBSD installation (default values), I exited the installation and the
machine was rebooted. I noticed the error.
b) If I execute the reboot command within the guest operating system, the
machine reboots and I notice the same error.

The error is:
"hptrr: no controller detected
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1a
Manual root filesystem specification:
 : Mount using filesystem e.g. ufs:da0s1a
? List valid disk boot devices
  Abort manual input"

I don't know if it's related, but I also cannot reboot using the virsh reboot
command:
$ virsh --connect qemu:///system reboot freebsd
Connecting to uri: qemu:///system
libvir: error : this function is not supported by the hypervisor:
virDomainReboot
error: Failed to reboot domain freebsd

The shutdown command does not work. When I execute the libvirt shutdown command:
$ virsh --connect qemu:///system shutdown freebsd
Connecting to uri: qemu:///system
Domain freebsd is being shutdown
...but the virtual machine does not shutdown.

The only thing that helps in this case is to destroy (kill) the virtual
machine, and start it again.
$ virsh --connect qemu:///system destroy freebsd
Connecting to uri: qemu:///system
Domain freebsd destroyed
$ virsh --connect qemu:///system start freebsd
Connecting to uri: qemu:///system
Domain freebsd started
...now the virtual machine works

Attached the screenshots of the two cases.

Jayson - Its probably easier to just get the specific package and

sudo dpkg -i linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic_2.6.24-19.28ubuntu1_i386.deb

[Bug 239109] [NEW] Network manager openvpn

2008-06-11 Thread Erki Hallingu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

Network Manager openvpn helper does not run scripts in
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d.

When my wired or wireless connection is made, these scripts are run. i
need to use them to adjust routings sometimes.

But they do not run when OpenVPN connection comes up. Also there is no
possibility to configure route-up (like it works in openvpn conf file
without nm) script in nm openvpn gui.

[Bug 226716] Re: username and password not accepted for webmail application

2008-06-11 Thread dlouzan
I've had a similar problem developing a web application for my company.
When trying to log in with a typical user - password form, I've noticed
that the password input is not sending correctly codified characters, so
the validation will fail (the same application works perfectly with FF2,
IE6 and IE7). This only affected the password input, not the clear text
one for the login. I've tracked the http communication and I've noticed
that firefox 3.0b5 is sending incorrectly codified characters in the
POST request.

For instance, using login='tést' and password='tést' (both using non-
ascii characters), firefox3.0b5 under Ubuntu 8.04 will send through POST
the parameters login='tést' and password='test' (stripping the accented
non-ascii characters). This seems a problem when typing, as if I
copy&paste 'tést' into the password input instead of manually typing it,
everything works.

xorg.conf to get it to work. Ubuntu's install and safe-mode configures
xorg.conf wrong for my hardware (Fujitsu-Siemens S7110 with Intel
945GM), "vesa" and "i810" x drivers are used which do not work for dual
screen setup. I used "intel" x driver manually in xorg.conf and it works
correctly until you choose "Cloned Screens" from gnome-display-
properties.

After that it is not possible to change it back to not cloned mode from
gui. I can restore normal screen setup only by deleting
~/gnome2/monitors.xml and restarting X.

[Bug 239087] Re: fslint-gui does not report duplicates with big files list

2008-06-11 Thread Pádraig Brady
Can you try with the latest version 2.26 (which is in debian testing BTW).
I fixed up a couple of issues in this area. You can download the ubuntu package
from:
http://www.pixelbeat.org/fslint/

Note if it does display the duplicate files but also reports errors,
I would be interested in seeing those errors as it may indicate
lower level issues still in fslint.

This is either an issue caused by one of your extensions (hint:
disable them in tools -> addons until you find the bad one) or a
website problem.

in any case this is almost certainly not a firefox bug.

[Bug 220910] Re: tk-brief has broken dependencies

2008-06-11 Thread StefanPotyra
Dietmar, thanks for testing!

pdf-viewer is a virtual package provided by xpdf, evince, evince-gtk,
kpdf et al. That way, the recommends are met, if one of these packages
is installed. With aptitude, you can look exactly what packages provide
pdf-viewer.

Cheers,
Stefan.

[Bug 228069] Re: Segfault when installing openjdk-6-jre-headless: installs properly on Intel based hardware, problem appears on Via C3 based machine

2008-06-11 Thread Matthias Klose
please recheck with a test rebuild from the opnjdk PPA; unfortunately
the version number of this build is lower than the one found in hardy-
proposed. To install:

 - if hardy-proposed is not in /etc/apt/sources.list,
add the line "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu hardy main"
   and install the packages

 - go directly to https://edge.launchpad.net/~openjdk/+archive or
   http://ppa.launchpad.net/openjdk/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openjdk-6/,
download the packages for your architecture directly and install
this all at once using dpkg -i. You most likely need
 openjdk-jre-headless
 openjdk-jre-lib
 openjdk-jre
 and maybe openjdk-jdk

Make sure that the package version is 6b10-0ubuntu1~ppa7
