[Ubuntu-be] ubuntu supportpunten
Hallo ubuntuvrienden, Zou het niet beter zijn dat er ubuntu cd's kunnen afgehaalt worden in winkels i.p.v. bij de sommige mensen thuis? Vb. hier is het een computerwinkel en krijg ik altijd te horen dat ze al iemand anders proberen te contacteren hebben om een gratis ubuntu cd te kunnen afhalen, voordat ze bij mij terecht gekomen zijn. De mensen vinden het goed als ze op vaste openingsuren altijd een ubuntu cd kunnen afhalen. Hier komen ze soms van ver om een cd'ke af te halen. Niets houdt je tegen om zelf ook een reeks Ubuntu CD's te bestellen of branden om in je winkel te leggen. Bij het uitkomen van 6.06 heb ik dat geprobeerd. Een 10-tal winkels bezocht om daar CD's achter te laten met de gegevens van de site en mijn contact nummer. Nergens gelukt. 1. "Ik moet nog windows verkopen hoor". 2. "Jaja en als een installatie mislukt kan ik het in garantie oplossen zeker...". Waren de meest gebruikte tegenargumenten. Computerboeren (ik bedoel de dozenverzetters die moeten opboxen tegen de plaatselijke GB, Aldi of Mediamarkt hebben geen intresse. Misschiien is dat enkel een stedelijk probleem... [Ubuntu-be] Newbie
Hi, I'm new at Ubuntu-be. I'm Bert, live in Heist-op-den-Berg, am 48 years of age, unemployed. Me, I am, what I call myself: a fiddler on the computer. I'm not a programmer, not a hacker and... even not even an IT specialist. I just like to tweak and "fiddle" with the machine. As for Ubuntu (or even Linux for that matter) is concerned: I'm a newbie as well. I installed Edgy some 6 weeks ago, installed the Feisty Fawn beta etc... I've been looking around at the forums, looking around at the OS, I'm trying to read up on Linux and Ubuntu (books ordered, not received yet). So, I'm a little bit busy with learning to find my ways in Ubuntu (and/or Linux). I have two computers: a desktop computer which has Ubuntu Feisty Fawn installed in dual boot with WinXP, and a Dell laptop, which has WinXP installed. My intentions are to change all OSs to Linux distributions as soon as my knowledge of Linux systems is satisfying enough to make the switch, and as soon as I converted my files to be readable in Linux. The reason why I want to do so: - I need a computer that does what I want; - I like experimenting, testing, tweaking... "fiddling". - Microsoft's prices turn my off. So, here I am. [Ubuntu-be] Ubuntu Feisty - A little disappointed...
Hello, Yesterday I decided to start playing with Ubuntu Feisty. Edgy was installed on my system, but I wanted to see and use the installer, so I decided this time not to use the dist-upgrade functionality and perform a clean install. I own a Dell Inspiron 6400 (in the States known as E1505), which is quite common and sold all around the world. This laptop has a Core 2 Duo T7200 cpu, 2GB RAM, a 160GB Sata disk, ipw3945abg wireless nic, broadcom lan nic, ...and an ATI Mobilty Radeon X1400... I started off by booting a Feisty Live cd. The kernel loaded, the fancy Ubuntu boot screen showed up and after a short while all activity stopped and my numlock/capslock/... leds started blinking: a kernel panic had occurred... Really cool :( I killed my system, rebooted into Edgy and burnt the alternate cd for attempt 2. The alternate installer successfully completed the installation, although I got X related questions during the installation about what screen resolution I wanted to use. This is something I had never seen before in any installation of Ubuntu or Debian... Once the installation was completed I booted the system and the first thing I saw was a Linux kind of a BSOD, asking me whether I wanted to see the X debugging output or not. Then I was confronted with an extremely user friendly login prompt... I tried the "dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" routine, in order to get at least X up and running in some basic mode, but whatever I tried (vesa, ati,...) with very very basic settings didn't work at all. The startx debugging info kept complaining about a screen that could not be found... I ended up downloading and installing the latest official proprietary driver from the ATI-website, building and installing my stuff from their run-file. Then I was able to log in graphically. Even though I really hate to be confronted with these kinds of problems, I'm generally able to solve these things, because I've been using Linux on the desktop for quite some years now (since 2002) and because I'm into IT in general. Ubuntu, Ubuntu-be and many more organizations want to promote Linux on the desktop. Average Joe should be able to install and work with Linux on his own pc, without a hassle. Unfortunately, this is not what I experience... So it's getting much harder for me to recommend Ubuntu to any average computer user, since they may experience the same horrible stuff as me, but they don't know what to do at all... Personally I still support the goals of Ubuntu, I see the progress they make, I see their goals and I like the fact that their software is always pretty much up-to-date...but I can't stand the big blunders they make: a couple of months ago the big X-server breaking update that got released, now this X problems and kernel panics when installing (or using the live-cd),... Recurrent problem... proprietary driver... Next computer you'll buy, make a better choice for your graphic card. That's what I make now. An average computer user often doesn't even realize what a graphics adapter really is or does, not to mention naming the brand or type of it. I don't have any problems with using proprietary drivers... I'm not a Stallman-like freedom extremist, and I prefer decent performance over a less performing but free driver. Ubuntu has decided to target Average Joe (and, by the way, that was a key point in Ploum's launching talk at Fosdem 2006 : to convert Windows users, not Linux users). So first it should... just work. Such critics would be irrelevant if, as you mentioned, other distros were not making a better job. Our LUG "Mandriva guru" proudly announced the release of Mandriva 2007 Spring, saying he was now "ready for our next LIP". So, Ubunteros, beware of competition! But to end up up in a more positive way, I have to say that almost all people I know agree on Ubuntu leadership in one field : its fantastic users community, which is you, ladies and gentlemen. I seduce potential converts to taste a little bit of freedom with minimal investment. Installing Ubuntu on a somewhat aging big brand computer is really a good example. It doesn't cost a lot, if anything, and on the technical side, with mostly well supported Intel hardware, an almost 100% success rate. Having said that, shipping a release with a bug as critical as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/89853 known for over a month before release is not good practice. I will definitely make this clear to my contacts at Canonical.
