Most of the machines today are 64bit (may be i'm wrong). Intel's D and
Core can run 64bit + 32 bit. Also AMD, so where this thin will run?

The RAB site is not Bangla technically. That is something else. Same as
Prothom Alo, Itteffaq etc. So Firefox doesn't work for them. :)

If those sites provides any custom font, you have to install the font in

There is no other option available for us.

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS, the
second maintenance release of "Dapper Drake". This release includes updated
Server installation CDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

About Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a full-featured Linux distribution for desktops, laptops, and

tightly-integrated selection of excellent applications is included, and
an incredible variety of add-on software is available from a global network

About Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS
---

This is the second maintenance release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, which
continues to be supported with maintenance updates and security fixes
until June 2009 on desktops and June 2011 on servers. This
maintenance release focuses on improving hardware support for popular
server platforms, including updated server installation media.

Over 600 post-release updates have been integrated, so that fewer
updates will need to be downloaded after installation, and a number of
bugs in the installation system have been corrected. These include
security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a
focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.

See http://www.ubuntu.com/usn for a list of Ubuntu security updates.
As of 2008-01-10, all updates affecting packages on the CD have been
applied.

A summary of notable updates follows. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu for specific information about a
particular bug number.

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Dialer from Gnome

2008-03-09 Thread Omi

Relax
Keep your modem connected and on.
Go to terminal and run the command "sudo wvdialconf"
It will detect some things automatically.

Then again type "sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf" on the shell and a text
editor will open. You have to modify the file according to the following
instruction (NOTE: Change only Phone, Password and Username field, do
not modify any of the other values, your computer will have some other
settings value then this one):

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
ISDN = 0
Phone = your_ISP_dialup_number
Password = your_password
Username = your_username

Now save the file and close the window. Type "wvdial" on shell and you
will be connected.

After you get connected, do not close the terminal and follow that
site's instruction to get a GUI dialer.

Hope it helps

You can use, GNOME PPP [0] for this purpose. Check this link [1] for

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Ubuntu 8.04 User's Experience

2008-04-25 Thread Omi

I just got the ISO and finished burning 30 CDs and distributed them.

Now the best thing of this Ubintu is you can install Ubuntu from
Windows. You don't need to partition your HDD or anything like that.
Just insert the CD and a installer will come up automatically from
Windows (if you have autorun turned off, then go into the CD and execute
umenu.exe) . And you can uninstall it too.

The installation takes something like 8-10 minutes to complete.

If you need the CD, just come to Uttara with a Blank CD and give me a
call on 0161omiazad and I can give you the installer.

By the way, I have Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Kubuntu's 8.04

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?

2008-05-01 Thread Omi
Can we rescue OLPC from Windows?

 by Richard Stallman

I read Negroponte's statement presenting the OLPC XO as a platform for
Windows in the most ironic circumstances possible: during a week of
preparing, under a deadline, to migrate personally to an XO.

I made this decision for one specific reason: freedom. The IBM T23s
that I have used for many years are adequate in practice, and the
system and applications running on them are entirely free software,
but the BIOS is not. I want to use a laptop with a free software BIOS,
and the XO is the only one.

The XO's usual software load is not 100% free; it has a non-free
firmware program to run the wireless chip. That means I cannot fully
promote the XO as it stands, but it was easy for me solve that problem
for my own machine: I just deleted that file. That made the internal
wireless chip inoperative, but I can do without it.

As always happens, problems arose, which delayed the migration until
last week. On Friday, when I discussed some technical problems with
the OLPC staff, we also discussed how to save the future of the
 project.

Some enthusiasts of the GNU/Linux system are extremely disappointed by
the prospect that the XO, if it is a success, will not be a platform
for the system they love. Those who have supported the OLPC project
with their effort or their money may well feel betrayed. However,
those concerns are dwarfed by what is at stake here: whether the XO is
an influence for freedom or an influence for subjection.

Since the OLPC was first announced we have envisioned it as a way to
lead millions of children around the world to a life in which they do
computing in freedom. The project announced its intention to give
children a path to learn about computers by allowing them to study and
tinker with the software. It may yet do that, but there is a danger
that it will not. If most of the XOs that are actually used run
Windows, the overall effect will be the opposite.

Proprietary software keeps users divided and helpless. Its functioning
is secret, so it is incompatible with the spirit of learning. Teaching
children to use a proprietary (non-free) system such as Windows does
not make the world a better place, because it puts them under the
power of the system's developer -- perhaps permanently. You might as
well introduce the children to an addictive drug. If the XO turns out
to be a platform for spreading the use of proprietary software, its
overall effect on the world will be negative.

It is also superfluous. The OLPC has already inspired other cheap
computers; if the goal is only to make cheap computers available, the
OLPC project has succeeded whether or not more XOs are built. So why
build more XOs? Delivering freedom would be a good reason.

The project's decision is not final; the free software community must
do everything possible to convince OLPC to continue being (aside from
one firmware package) a force for freedom.

Part of what we can do is offer to help with the project's own free
software. OLPC hoped for contribution from the community to its
interface, Sugar, but this has not happened much. Partly that's
because OLPC has not structured its development so as to reach out to
the community for help -- which means, when viewed in constructive
terms, that OLPC can obtain more contribution by starting to do this.

Sugar is free software, and contributing to it is a good thing to do.
But don't forget the goal: helpful contributions are those that make
Sugar better on free operating systems. Porting to Windows is
permitted by the license, but it isn't a good thing to do.

I am typing these words on the XO. As I travel and speak in the coming
weeks, I will point to it in my speeches to raise this issue.

First of all, sorry for being inactive on the list for the last few

mistakes while writing in Bengali, so I'll stick in English for
sometime.

Thank you Roobon bhai for all your support, I really appreciate it.
17th May would be a good day for hosting the release party, so if you
can manage the space on that day in the evening (3 PM onwards, till 7
PM) then it would be great! Once the date is confirm, we can start
planning for the event and making necessary arrangements.

We're not looking for a very formal event, it'll be more of a
get-together type program with 2 or 3 presentations and rest of the
time we'll have discussions and have a question/answer session. It is
important that the members get a chance to meet fellow Ubuntu users
and build a stronger real life community as opposed to the virtual
community that we now have.

Looking forward for a successful release party in around 2 weeks! :)

Best regards,
Russell

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] My experience in Ubuntu, thanks Mr Omi

2008-05-25 Thread Omi
Hello Mr. Rafiq,
I'm glad to know that you loved Ubuntu. :)

One thing we must admit that we don't argue for something stupid. The things
we use and get satisfied with, we recommend them to people.

You can install Sutunny font. Put the font into /*usr/share/fonts*/TTF/
folder and come to your terminal. Type "fc-cache" and press enter. It will
load the new font into memory and hola, everything will rock. :) You can
open the MJ documents with OOo.

Let me know if you need any more help. Also if you are ready to take paid
service, we can provide you that.

Thanks
Omi

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] linux.org.bd down??

2008-05-28 Thread Omi
Linux.org.bd goes down many times and the owner of the domain don't want to
change host, I don't know why.

But this time .BD has some problem too. My blog omi.net.bd is showing some
stupid message and when I called BTTB today they said it has a bad name
server record and they are fixing it.

This is wired.

Kowsheek
I agree with you that it could happen with any site. But it is no longer a
joke when it happens in every 2 month or so. Most of the time the sites goes
down.

I was on my way to show our OSS works to IFC and found the site is down. The
guy told me "What the fuck man, you guys have something to show or just
wasting our time." Now tell me what would be my situation then?

I know who is working on that and I requested him several times to be
serious on the issue. Hosting is potential for a project and you have to
understand that.

Hope you got the point.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] OT : সাবমেরিন ক্যাবল

2008-12-20 Thread Omi
I have a good idea, perhaps the engineers can make it live. What about we
stop using that stupid cables and use the waters instead as a career media.
We will use the waters as our media and need not to worry about
cut/whatever. Everyone can get connected from the sea and river :)

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Linus Torvalds Switched Back To Gnome

2009-01-25 Thread Omi
So what is going on now? KDE is loosing users?

Well I'm a Gnome fan from the very beginning but I liked the the ঝাকানাকা
interface of KDE too. As I never used KDE I don't have much knowledge of
it's changes. It seems like they are following Microsoft, as MS is also
making changes to their interface and pushing the users to use that. :)

Dell is the most expensive brand in this planet. Some days back I wanted

We can hope cheaper lappies from Dell this time.

My only question to Mr. Angle is, why people use Fedora as a OS. OS like
Fedora gave panic to the users. Look at Ubuntu, how many successful
desktop users they have.

Hasin
I'm not also against Fedora, but their ultimate goal is to make money by
selling support. That is why they use critical system like YUM..

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Fedora-bangladesh-list

2008-05-10 Thread Omi Azad

Hello There,
I'm taking this conversation at the end but I must say some words. So
sorry for not keeping Russell Bhai's request for the time being.

We like oils and don't like to be straight. You did not ask for any help
here and I neither pulled your leg nor discouraged you. May be I pulled
your leg on some other place and that is why you are hiding your name.

I appreciate your initiative but alas you took a wrong side this time :)
. I wanted to use Linux and the first version was Red Hat 4, which I got
free with some Indian IT mag. That time my brother (was a CSE student)
and his friends tried to use it and after 9 days of trying they
successfully brought the Kernel Desktop Environment on.

It's still that painful. Let me give you a small example and then you
might understand why we should forget about all the other Linux
distribution and start using Ubuntu. Here in Ubuntu I wrote "apt-get
install skype" from my Gnome's shell and it installed Skype and all it's
KDE dependencies (as Skype is a QT application). Now when I tried to
install Skype through YUM, it says this not found that not found (for
example libqt3c102-mt not found, libqt3c102 not found) so why should I
keep trying and trying and trying?

Can you change the system? No you are not. I did not attack you, I just
wanted to tell you Red Hat's ultimate goal is to make money, so they
will not change anything, our options are not closed yet. We have BOSS
distributions like Debian and Ubuntu, so why bother to keep trying
Fedora. :)

Hope you get the message. If you want to stick with Fedora, you are
absolutely welcome. None of us here have any problem. What I mentioned
above is only my personal opinion and not a part of any survey. But I
feel that is the major reason people don't like to use that OS as a
primary daily life computing OS.

One more thing, we really feel disturbed when we spend huge time on
finding solution and make the solution to public. Make that as simple as
my kid can understand. But people don't go through the solution and ask
nonsense questions. I honestly feel disturbed then.

Thanks for the understanding

I guess Omi bhai was putting an end to the Fedora Vs. Ubuntu debate,

I'll clear my position here first, I love Linux, I love the freedom in
it. Currently I use Ubuntu cause I've became used to it. I've also
used Redhat , Fedora 1-8 and I know my ins and out of both of the distros.

Now I should point out some information
Canonical (Ubuntu's Sponsor) also provides paid supports
<http://www.ubuntu.com/support/paid> and if you don't want to pay you
go to the community, Its all the same with Redhat, if you want
dedicated support you go for paid service if not then go to the
Community. Yes Fedora also have a good community.
But at the end the paid service is mostly useful for Large
corporations and companies.

Don't forget, every corporation is in it for money.

I am not stereotyping Fedora, but seriously I dont see there is
any necessity of this distro anymore :)

Debian and Mandriva (former mandrake) are much more matured than
this one, even you can conside Suse too -

I had to point out this comment, cause I think I have to.
You are getting it all wrong. Linux is all about community and working
together. Red-hat implements something Ubuntu adopts it and Vise
versa. Without this community work Linux wouldn't have came this far.
So every one is important. So for the sake of Linux, Fedora should
exists, so should Ubuntu and other thousands of distros, cause anyone
contribute anything in the end it that helps each and every one of us.

because it didn't worked for you, doesn't meant it will not work for
others, it works. Thousands of servers runs on Fedora/Redhat. Fedora
have a big user base. Where I work, the server is a Fedora 8 server
and it works, its damn solid.

Fedora is more matured then most of the distros you mentioned except
Debian.

I like redhat because, Red hat have been giving us their OS for free
for a Long long time and mind it their contribution to Linux is
undeniable and huge. And They still have a big part in Linux's
development and they will have for a long time to come.
Mandriva and Suse are corporate maggots from whome I think I would
stay away, I don't remember Mandriva ever contribute something
mentionable to the OSS and while Suse contribution is awesome (Compiz,
silverlight etc.) they are sold to MS.

I agree yum sucks, but its a new system (w/r to apt) so it needs time.
As far I remember their developers are working for an unified
repository, once its completed, most of the dependency problems will
be solved. I've used Fedora 8 and I have to say it was solid. Only
problem was the package manager. but the improvement between Yum(f7)
and yum(f8) was very impressive. and in fedora 9 they are reworking
the GUI too which looks nicer then the 7/8 's package manager.

Its not very reasonable to say one distro sucks or another distro is
boss. cause in the core all are the same, They are all built a top of
Linux kernel, they are all the same to me

Bye

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Gates offers free software in Asia

2008-05-13 Thread Omi Azad
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/05/09/gates-offers-free-software-asia

Gates offers free software in Asia

Pulls Intel trump card for digital have-nots

By Mark Ballard: Friday, 09 May 2008, 5:31 PM

BILL GATES HAS OFFERED free software for a million PCs the Indonesian
government is trying to acquire for students, according to the Jakarta
Post today.

Gates met Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, president of Indonesia, the
world's fourth most populous country, yesterday to talk about how the
country was also the fourth amongst 'piracy offenders' in Asia. He was
also there to renew Microsoft's 2006 deal to supply software to the
government and to add another University to its growing international
network of proprietary training centres.

The newspaper reported that Gates promised free software, "if
Indonesia could make a deal with Intel chairman Craig Barrett, who
will meet Yudhoyono in Jakarta next week".

The government was trying to buy a million PCs for under $200 each to
get more computers in education. Indonesia had one PC for every 1,000
students. It aimed to have one for every 20. So the deal might not
quite bridge the digital divide, but at least it throws a rope near
the far bank.

Microsoft's push into Indonesia and other Less Smug Countries (LSCs)
pitches US industrial might against European guerrilla software
innovation.

USAID, the US federal overseas development fund, supports a tech
innovation competition run by Microsoft in Indonesia that attracted
100 proposals last year.

The software giant has also since 2006 established a network of 110
Microsoft Innovation Centres in 60 countries, the last of which it
launched in Jakarta yesterday, which provide training and encourage
firms and students to use Microsoft software. It now has five such
centres in Indonesia.

The Europeans on the other hand have given €0.7m to the Flossinclude
programme to encourage homegrown opensource development in Asia, India
and South America.

Rishab Ghosh, an opensource guru at Maastricht University who helps
run Flossinclude, said that Microsoft was being forced to take the
"drug-pusher strategy" to Asian markets because of competition from
government-supported open source initiatives.

"They give free software to governments, but they are not going to
keep it free forever. They'll start charging, and then they make it
difficult for you to migrate because of their proprietary standards.
That's the classic lock-in strategy of the monopoly," said Ghosh, "In
the long-run, you have to pay the company that you are dependent on."

After his meeting with Gates, Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono, gave a heart-swelling speech about how IT could "fight
poverty", "raise the dignity of man", and ensure no less than the
"survival of the human race".

"We must promote technology that will reinforce, not lose, our common
humanity," he said.

This was once the philosophy that led One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a
scheme to get cheap laptops the into the hands of African school
children, to choose the open source Linux operating system for its
machines. Open source software was supposed to spawn a network of
do-it-yourself software engineers and local repair shops across LSCs,
instead of spods trained to fill the corporate coffers of a US
multinational. But OLPC has since said it might drop Linux for
Microsoft's Windows. Sales of Linux laptops weren't going too well,
the Wintel giants were charming LSC governments with a competing model
of cheap laptop, and people were pirating Microsoft software anyway.

Gates, renowned for his tycoon philanthropism, used his trip Indonesia
to promote his vision of Microsoft as the means by which impoverished
peoples will raise themselves up on the crutches of knowledge and
modernity.

Microsoft's pitch is also identical to OLPC's once egalitarian call to
action. Microsoft's proprietary training centres would be a
"sparkplug...empowering citizens with IT skills and nurturing strong,
local software economies".

Giving free software to LSCs would also help Microsoft solve the
piracy problem in Indonesia. It merely repackages Microsoft's old
policy to piracy in LSCs, which was to let it ride because it got
people locked into its software. Gates may as well gift sand to the
Arabs.

Hello Ashiqur (I don't know why you don't use this name, don't you like
it?),
Yes some days ago you pretend yourself as a ambassador of Fedora on this
list.

I didn't want to get into the distro fight, but something I noticed
before which I want to mention here. You did some advocacy of loving
distro Fedora and some days back you started fighting with a guy saying
Fedora and Red Hat are not same (Guys! please stop laughing, he is
very new in this linux world and don't have any knowledge on anything).
Come on, when you do some advocacy, you need at least some knowledge.
When we say something against Fedora, we have at least some knowledge on
that.

Now about Hasin and your fights. I think you did a mistake by sending a
mail criticizing the list and you *have to* apologize for that. We don't
have any intension of stopping you from doing advocacy of Fedora, if we
had then you would be banned from this list by now. You are a kid and
you still have lot more to learn and we have no problem to give you a
good guide.

So say sorry and stop the war before the situation take a wrong turn.

Hope you get the point.

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] linux.org.bd down??

2008-05-28 Thread Omi Azad

Weak Up!

BTTB is no longer asking 1500/year. It's 1500 for 2 years during sign-up
and 700 taka per year for rest of the years. I agree that they have a
bad management. Like I sent 2 faxes today after waiting 3 hours just to
change name servers. I could do it by couple of clicks online.

Yahoo offered $1.99 per year? For how long, please read the offers
carefully. How many domains you can buy with that price with your Y! ID?

Take Care

Dear Omi Bhai,
.bd should be lower priced its too high (tk 1500 yearly) for just TLD.
BTTB should allow us to register domains like www.bangladesh.bd
<http://www.bangladesh.bd> or www.dhaka.bd <http://www.dhaka.bd> why
ppl will be giving two domain costs? Just becuz they are Bangladeshi?
As yahoo offers $1.99 per domain we should be able to get Bangladeshi
Top Level Domain for like 200tk per year

Otherwise there's almost no point for .bd domains

What do you think?

Also they don't offer 2 digit names. But if I'm not wrong I saw one
ministry site xx.gov.bd so how come that site has 2 digits?'

some local dumb expert.

Anyway, from my point of view .bd domain should open on Internet.
