Hi Kristina

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't see your message until now, because
it was posted to the artwork list. (Ubuntu has other mailing lists for
usability , accessibility
, and
desktop software in general
.)

If you would like to help out with design work, that would be excellent!

Here's a simple task to start off with: redesigning the Jockey tool.

Open System Settings. Under the "Hardware" section, choose "Additional
Drivers". You should see a window something like this:

Now, think of half a dozen ways to present this interface differently.
For example, as:
* its own panel inside System Settings (instead of a window)
* part of the "System Info" panel of System Settings (since it's about
hardware)
* part of Ubuntu Software Center (since it's about installing/removing
software, specifically drivers)
* part of Update Manager (since installing a proprietary driver, like
installing updates, is something you may need to do shortly after
installing Ubuntu).

Identify benefits and disadvantages of each approach, and make a
recommendation. :-)

Some questions you might consider when choosing a design:
* What should its title be?
* If there is an additional driver available, how should an Ubuntu
user learn this automatically?
* What should happen if the interface is invoked manually, when no
extra drivers are available?
* How can people make an informed decision about whether to install a
driver?

* What should happen if there's no Internet connection when you try to
download a driver?
* How should progress be shown?

* What should happen if a driver fails to install?

* What should happen after a driver is installed or removed?

* Should searching for a printer driver use the same interface, or a
custom interface?

If you're interested in this task, or if there's something else in
particular you'd like to work on, let me know.

Cheers

[ubuntu-art] Ubuntu 12.04 DVD Cover - WIP

2012-01-11 Thread EldiS
So hey to you all again!
I haven't been around here in last year, as I jumped over 10.04 and 11.10
editions, but since Ubuntu is gaining some solidness again, I will do some
artwork related to it again.

This is the basic DVD cover concept I have on my mind for upcoming Ubuntu
12.04 LTS edition.
This is just a starting point. It might, and it might not look like final
version, but I think the main shell is there.
Comparing to my previous covers I wanted this to be the most clean and the
most effective one. And at the same time the most effect-less when it comes
to layer effects. Even I didn't follow ubuntu brand guidelines strictly,
there are enough elements to make this cover recognizable and ubuntuish.
Final version will include covers for all type of media boxes, like CD
boxes, DIY paper sleeves (like official ones), etc... But for now it is
just a DVD cover concept.

Here is the preview:

And here is the link to work itself:

Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu 12.04 DVD Cover - WIP

2012-01-11 Thread Dub
The case doesn't scream Ubuntu, the 12.04 looks more like a date then
a version, which is really confusing.
The box with info in it on the back looks disorganized and not very
clean. It's just a block of text.

I like the concept you should continue with it, however I feel the
current concept was poorly executed.

My initial thoughts on the DVD concept.
