[ubuntu-art] Re styling the Logo, Circle of Friends 2009

2009-07-02 Thread Phoenix Corleone

Hello everybody from Russia, Saint Petersburg! :)
I'm not shure that's the right place to put my message, so I'll be glad
someone to help me to post the idea in the correct place.

I made a new Ubuntu logo, and we have just discussed it with our LoCo at
forum.ubuntu.ru, and we like it!=)

So, here is the link:
http://itmages.ru/view.php?action=view&id=6613&key=ae9b8d

I'm sorry because the image is black&white, I've made it by hand on a paper,
'cos I'm not expirienced with GIMP. Ofcource, the logo must be painted in
traditional Ubuntu colours!

I'd like to know your opinion about the restyled logo! Can it be used in
9.10 Karmic?=)

Very good work! I like it even more than the current logo because it
inspires more community spirit and interconnection.

I can't answer this as I'm not competent enough but somebody else could
do it ;)

:-D ... It won't be goodlooking on small sizes (22, 16). Surely not.

Besides the fact that it looks awesome (I'll try to make an SVG of it
later on today), I don't think Ubuntu will change their logo any time
soon - it's branding after all :)

This is just my opinion on the matter though :D

That would be a good logo for an Ubuntu derivative though.

Right, Canonical holds the trademark so unless it just so happens to squeeze
through the cracks I would doubt it can be used.

That said, I think it is really nifty ;)

I don't find it ugly, and I think most icons (and the current logo, too)
will not be goodlooking on 16pxs.

Yes, I agree that it's hard to dair to change the branding logo, but I find
the current one out-of-date. Ubuntu needs new, smooth, more round logo, and
Anton has caught my idea clearly. I think "it's time")

Official Russian LoCo is going to take the logo as it's official, and some
non-official LoCos, too. I think it's a reason to think. One girl said "the
picture should be noticed by Cannonical's boys"
=)

Re: [ubuntu-art] Re styling the Logo, Circle of Friends 2009

2009-07-02 Thread Steve Dodier
I don't think the current official logo is that out-dated... Breaking
building is extremely dangerous for a big company, and the logo is the first
part of branding. People, with the new logo, may think that this is
_another_ Ubuntu and not give it trust.

Also, even if the logo is damn sexy, its assymetry gave me the thought that
every of the 3 humans on the logo was embrassing the one on his right but
rejecting the one on his left. That's not really a "circle of friends"
anymore ;)

I hope your logo will be used, but i dont think the official logo should be
replaced for a good 3-10 years.

[ubuntu-art] Karmic Impression

2009-07-02 Thread John Baer
I've upload Karmic Impression to the wiki for testing.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Impression

Highlights are as follows:

* New and improved dark metacity!

I found it interesting the Moblin desktop uses buttons very similar to
Impression. I found their "oOo" design very usable and changed Karmic
Impression metacity to match.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Impression/Metacity

My desire is Impression is stable, usable, and unique to Ubuntu. After
many false attempts I came upon the idea to brand the bottom of the form
with an orange gradient. For the most part this is just bling as all of
the work is occurring at the top. As far as I know this is the first
theme to try this. I'm sure folks will line up on both sides of the
fence but IMO it adds value in branding (dark & orange).

* Refinements to gtk

I wanted to move away from the bold menu highlights to something light
and stylish. Ubuntu Netbook remix menus gave me the inspiration.

Other refinements include small changes to the toolbar and toolbar
buttons and fixing an issue with text highlighting.

Cheers!

John

Hey all, I've made an SVG, please excuse me if I'm not supposed to
attach it in a mailing list but I don't really have any other place to
put it :) Unless I do and I just don't know it...?

I've had to take some minor liberties in order to make sure it's a
uniform and consistent design, with arcs that are actually based upon
ellipses. I basically just did some cutting with some skewed spheres
and rotated them to the approx. positions.

the colours are official RGB ubuntu colours as per:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Official
Obviously this isn't my original artwork so I'll just say I converted
to SVG pro bono ruski publico ;) the original artist has full
discretion over the copyright.

Let me know what you think :)

I dont think Oliver meant that it would be ugly :)

*Its a lovely design* , but the 16px is almost like a circle where the
individual curves merge.
While the current logo is very clear in 16px.

Also... right now , Ubuntu is very rigid about not changing its logo.

Maybe in future, when they are accepting new designs for logo you can
pitch this idea again :)

Any such announcements, for new logo designs, will be notified in this
mailing list, so stay subscribed ;)

Wow! , I like the "oOo" idea too , and the subtle change you have done
for the maximized buttons...

But maybe the big "O" can be used *only* for the prelight ,as in,it is
the small "o" when normal & on hover it grows to the glowing orange "O".
And the opposite for the maximized windows... :) Just my 2 cents...

Anyway,I'll be ripping it off for my custom setup! ;)

Cheers,
