I think it should not --- and thank all gods that it is not.

Not sure if KDE4 will make me change my opinion/view
about it, but from what I've seen so far, KDE is as bad
and as bloated/non-functional as it gets. Almost as bad
as Windows, if not worse...

Carlos has a point, although I'm not sure I'd have worded it quite so
strong -- I know there are plenty of happy KDE users, as there are
Windows users. Having said that, I loaded the Xubuntu LiveCD for the
first time yesterday [I was curious] and have to admit that I
personally wasn't impressed. I didn't find it as user friendly as
GNOME and it did seem to feature lots of foreign [to me at least]
applications. I think the GNOME desktop has a better naming convention
and is better suited as the default desktop...

...I could probably ramble on for ages on this topic, but I'll leave it there.

Peace.

The KDE people say the same thing about Gnome that the Gnome people
say about KDE (performance, bloat, etc) . I think in the end it seems
that there is very little reason to separate the two systems based on
performance. They both do what they are meant to do pretty well.

The Gnome project really started because KDE used to include non free
software, and Gnome since then has always been seen as the more open
source alternative. So given Ubuntu's ethos based in free software
it's not really surprising that they (he) chose Gnome.

Daniel.

Though I mostly agree with the rest of your message, I have to object
to the above --- from everything I read, what KDE people say about
GNOME has nothing to do with performance! What they criticize is
mostly the lack of configurability; KDE has the reputation that you
can configure the way every single little pixel on your screen would
look like; GNOME has the reputation of being simple, clean, and with
a sensible default.

I do not think that any KDE fan would dare have the audacity to
pick on GNOME using performance (or lack thereof) as their
argument --- that would border criminal behaviour!!! :-)

> They both do what they are meant to do pretty well.

Sorry, I have to disagree with this --- last time I logged on to
KDE on my notebook (where GNOME works flawlessly smooth), I could
see the windows and dialog boxes appear; the fade-in effects would
take close to two seconds in completing... Sloppy and bloated like
you wouldn't believe it!

Yes, you could go on and say: well, you must have done something
wrong... My question is: what could I possibly do wrong when the
only thing I did was *install* Ubuntu???

I wonder if KDE defenders simply are and have always been running
on mega-powerful machines where even Windows Vista would run
smoothly...

Agreed that this is the most likely reason --- but do notice that
also, a big part of Linux's good reputation is the fact that,
unlike Windows, it is "lean and mean" --- meaning you can run it
on your old hardware that you were planning on throwing away
because it was not enough to run Windows... Putting KDE as
default would somewhat betray that prnciple... Yes, some people
would say that GNOME also breaks that principle, and that there's
a reason why XUbuntu exists...  It's all a matter of thresholds;
but still, seems like KDE would be going to the opposite extreme,
whereas GNOME seems like a good compromise; lean enough, though
not the leanest, but functional enough (IMHO, much better than
KDE in terms of usability and user-friendlyness, although I know
that I'm going contrary to popular opinion with this one)

I've heard Gnome criticized plenty of times for being bloated and
slow (as compared to KDE). I've also heard the inverse. I've used
both on the same machine, and they both seem about the same to me.
Just my anecdotal evidence.

True. And they seem to be going their separate ways. Gnome used to be
much more configureable if my memory serves me well...

I think for the most part their performance isn't much of an issue.
It's ironic though because when I first started using KDE & Gnome,
about 1998, it was Gnome that was quite a bit slower than KDE. Even
then I preferred the look and feel of Gnome over KDE, even when it
was slower. Although the truth is that I probably mostly used
Enlightenment without Gnome or KDE.

I think another big turn off for us Linux / FreeBSD users is the fact
that KDE is a direct rip off of Windows, and that's not fun,
especially when we install Linux to get away from the whole Windows
quagmire.

I think both 'lean and mean' and 'ultra configureable' are both
important open source traits.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Curiousity:)

2007-11-21 Thread Damian Vila
Sorry for the double mail, I just found the interview in english:
http://www.abclinuxu.cz/clanky/rozhovory/mark-shuttleworth?page=1

The interesting point:

*4) How are you looking forward to KDE 4? Is there a possibility of
KDE 4 ever displacing Gnome as the default 'desktop of choice' for Ubuntu?*

That's interesting. I'm really looking forward to Plasma and I've seen
that Plasma is starting to land in some of the latest snapshots of
KDE 4. I think there's some great technology work being done there.

I think it's unlikely that KDE replaces Gnome as default Ubuntu desktop.
And the main reason is that we don't, at this stage, have the same level
of confidence in the KDE project's ability to deliver predictable
release schedules. You know, the Ubuntu release schedule, release
process is a very important part of what we do, and Gnome has exactly
the same release philosophy that we do, which is that it's very
important to release predictably every six months. Because KDE doesn't
do that, it would be much more difficult just to deliver the same level
of predictability and planning to the operating system. So for the
moment I think we will stick with Gnome.

*5) So it's not exactly about technical merits. It's about availability
and about you being able to base the schedule on Gnome?*

Yeah, there were two main drivers for us choosing Gnome as the first and
therefore default desktop. The first was their commitment to the six
month release schedule – and they actually had a track record of doing
that. And I believe that KDE could do this. I'm strongly encouraging KDE
to adopt the same release schedule as Gnome, because I think they would
become more widely tested and more widely adopted if they did this.

And the second thing was Gnome's real commitment to usability. They
really care about how easy to use the desktop is. And KDE, at that time,
was more interested in fancy features. So while there's room in the
world for both of these philosophies, we need to pick one. And those
values were closer to what we were looking for. So we went with Gnome.

We have a fantastic community project in Kubuntu which works very
closely with the KDE community. I would love to see Kubuntu get more
downloads, wider adoption, and broader interest. But at this stage it
can't be the default desktop for Ubuntu.

Regards,

D.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Curiousity:)

2007-11-21 Thread Damian Vila
As far as I know (from an interview I read), he choose GNOME because
they compromised on a 6 month development cycle (to match that of
Ubuntu) and because GNOME has a compromise on usability and not only on
features.

D.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Curiousity:)

2007-11-21 Thread Donn

I don't grok this. How is the essential layout and set of concepts between
Gnome, KDE and Windows any different?
Taskbar, tray, "Start" button, panels, windows, min/max/close buttons,
desktops, icons, drag/drop, etc.

?

Also, I'd say while they both mirror each other, KDE is by far my favourite
simply because it lets me do what *I* want to do (to a point) -- but this
does not mean that Gnome can't (with practice).

> We chose Gnome...
In my experience, installing Gnu/Linux on *very* old machines, Gnome was just
too slow. KDE was much better but Xubuntu was best of that breed.
Actually, (I can't recall the name, but) Afterstep (I think, or one of
the 'steps') was the best overall for speed and functionality.
