[Touch-packages] [Bug 1914278] Re: Kernel updates marked as "manually installed", prevents old kernels cleanup

2022-02-21 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Resolving this required a fair bit of refactoring, so TBH I am not sure
that it is safe to backport to Focal, unless version 1.2.5 is submitted
as-a-whole.

Bug description:
With the machines I help administer, we have been finding situations
where the /boot directory is filling-up beyond 3 kernels on LUKS
encrypted systems. apt autoremove is not removing old kernels as

This may also be an issue with unattended-upgrades since I found the
  following line commented-out by default:

// Remove unused automatically installed kernel-related packages

We have had a system with as many as 15 kernel packages installed as a

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1914278] Re: Kernel updates marked as "manually installed", prevents old kernels cleanup

2022-02-21 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I tested this with a bunch of dummy packages and a local repository, and
everything worked pretty well and states were applied as expected. Of course,
doesn't mean that there may be a real-world bug that I haven't seen yet, but I
think it's unlikely (I've also been running this on my machine on Debian for
the past weeks).
Even automatic kernel removals work, but I could not test yet whether they also
work through PackageKit.
Is Focal using PackageKit for updates even? I thought it was still on
update-manager/aptd for that task...

That should not happen - do you have a backtrace for that? Reporting it
at the PackageKit bugtracker would also be nice so I have it on my
radar.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1961837] Re: PackageKit 1.2.5 unable to perform upgrades

2022-02-24 Thread Matthias Klumpp
For completeness, a much better and simpler patch is this:
https://salsa.debian.org/pkgutopia-team/packagekit/-/blob/0c43611b82879bd71e633af02878d9c80283f7da/debian/patches/01_fix-single-candidate-pkgid-emission.patch
Maybe that will make its way into Ubuntu Jammy too, but it's not as urgent :-)

Looks like PK needs an updated `fix-single-candidate-pkgid-emission.patch`
patch (attached). I queued it for Debian, but I am secretly waiting whether we
will get another PK bugfix release in time (there's a few things left that I
need to have a look at).
In any case, I believe the attached patch should fix this issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1718453] Re: apt does not download dep11 files for foreign architectures and appstream cannot find applications for these archs.

2020-01-03 Thread Matthias Klumpp
At this point, I think it's safe to say that implementing full multiarch
support for AppStream simply isn't going to happen, at least not anytime soon.
It's simply easier for app authors to provide native implementations for amd64
instead of relying on i386 compatibility.
If support was implemented fully, we would download lots of additional big
metadata and run into all kinds of troubles of which app gets selected when
there are ID conflicts.
Resolving all of these issues is possible, but the huge effort IMHO doesn't
justify the gains. If someone else works on this, I'd assist the work, but I
will unlikely work on this myself. I originally intended to, but TBH, this
issue has really low priority nowadays.

There is a workaround for high-profile packages that are only available
on one architecture: *If* i386 support is enabled by default, the
appstream-generator can be instructed to inject metadata for a specific
package directly into the final metadata collection. See
https://github.com/ximion/appstream-generator/blob/master/docs/asgen-
config.md#injecting-extra-metainfo--removing-components for details.
This is intended to be used for adding web applications, but may work
for the multiarch case as well, at least for a select few of high-
profile application packages.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1774491] Re: pkcon install fails -- proxy?

2018-05-31 Thread Matthias Klumpp
This very much looks like a bug int Aptdaemon's PK compatibility layer
to me. At this point, it likely makes no sense to fix this issue, since
that code has been dropped after the Xenial release.

@tlc: This will likely be a won't fix bug, please upgrade to Bionic if you can.
If you can't upgrade, you can try to switch from the compat layer to the real
PK daemon, if the system allows you to do that:
sudo apt purge python3-aptdaemon.pkcompat ; sudo apt install packagekit

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1675163] Re: Don't attempt to create devices in LXC containers

2018-08-22 Thread Matthias Klumpp
FWIW, I ran into that issue today as well, and it was really annoying. So I
fixed in in Debian in a generic way, so this should work for every container
solution out there.
It requires systemd-detect-virt (systemd) to be installed prior to installing
makedev though (which usually is the case).

Bug description:
Right now the "makedev" postinst script will attempt to create a
number of devices in /dev, failing the package upgrade should any of
  those mknod calls fail.

LXC containers, especially unprivileged ones do not allow the use of
mknod, making it impossible to upgrade makedev in those containers and
  preventing Ubuntu release upgrades.

The fix is quite simple, detect that we are running in an LXC
container and skip the rest of the postinst script as is done in a
  number of other cases.

  = SRU
  == Rationale
This issue prevents release to release upgrades in unprivileged LXC
containers when makedev is part of the upgraded set. This is currently visible
when upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to Ubuntu 14.04.

  == Testcase
Install the new package in an unprivileged container. With LXD, simply use
"lxc launch ubuntu: test" to create the container.

Prior to this fix, the upgrade will fail on some mknod errors, after
it, it'll go on after printing a message indicating that LXC was
  detected.

  == Regression potential
The detection logic is based on PID 1's environment containing a
container=lxc entry. If a non-LXC system somehow had that set, it'd lead to the
makedev upgrade no longer creating extra devices. This is unlikely to really
matter though since the system is clearly already functioning properly at that
point.

Similarly, some privileged LXC containers can be configured in a way
where mknod is possible, this update will still disable the postinst
for those cases as short of attempting every mknod ahead of time,
there is no reliable way to detect any seccomp or apparmor policy in
  play.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1790613] Re: Regression: packagekit crashes updating itself to a new version

2018-10-11 Thread Matthias Klumpp
We don't actively kill PackageKit when updating it, we just tell the daemon to
quit itself as soon as possible if it can do so.
Also, a packagekitd times out automatically when inactive.
So this crash really shouldn't happen...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1718453] Re: apt does not download dep11 files for foreign architectures and appstream cannot find applications for these archs.

2018-01-25 Thread Matthias Klumpp
@donkult: The downloads for all architectures are not allowed at time,
because doing so would lead to AppStream-ID collisions, and AppStream
itself has no notion of architectures (yet - I played around with that a
bit, but there is no definitive good solution yet).

For downloading Components-all, if we would generate such a file, could
APT be configured to download that one unconditionally, no matter what
the Releases file says? Because in that case, we could do quite a few
optimizations to save disk space.

Awesome!
You can drop the virtual interface if you don't want to continue to use
Aptdaemon for software which is using PackageKit interfaces (which I would of
course welcome ^^).
Cheers,

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1716137] Re: Error message using easy-codec-install (gstreamer1.0-packagekit) is not useful & confusing

2017-09-09 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I think the message is even wrong... You shouldn't need the app-install-data
package for this to work. I guess maybe this happens because the
app-install-data package contains .desktop files indicating mimetypes, and
PK/AppStream gets confused by that.
There is definitely no hardcoding of this message in PackageKit though, and
AFAIK also not in GNOME Software.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1719077] Re: Unable to find codecs to play videos

2017-09-24 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I fixed the bug mentioned in this report (the error message should be gone now
and you should be able to search for mimetypes with PackageKit again).
However, it could be possible that the error described here was masking another
issue with missing codecs itself (I can't test that at time).

In any case, you can test this by upgrading PackageKit to version
1.1.7-1 (currently in Debian, maybe synced to Ubuntu), or by applying
https://github.com/hughsie/PackageKit/commit/5e8a20440ca53080d5409a10f211a0979545816f

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548480] Re: 95packagekit sleep hook weirdly installed in a subdirectory is ignored

2017-09-24 Thread Matthias Klumpp
This has been resolved since PackageKit 0.8.14, we removed the pm-utils
helper back then, since pm-utils is dead upstream. The issue here was
fixed a while before even, but Ubuntu took a really long time to update
to a recent version of PK.

95packagekit sleep hook weirdly installed in a subdirectory is ignored

Status in packagekit package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The 95packagekit sleep hook provided by packagekit is installed in a
subdirectory:
  /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/95packagekit/95packagekit

  This has two effects:

  1the hook is not run;

2owing to a bug in pm-utils, separately reported, the previous
hook is run for a second time instead.

If #1 was actually the desired effect, the hook should have been
stored as /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/95packagekit~ or just omitted.

If the hook is manually installed as /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/95packagekit, it runs as expected (although the nature
of the hook's operation means that it may have no obvious effect).

  This issue was observed in 14.04, packagekit 0.8.12-1ubuntu5;
apparently was OK in 12.04. A packaging bug seems to have appeared
when 95packagekit was updated in revision 1.2.10.

Additionally, the hook 95packagekit is incorrectly numbered according
to the pm-utils HOWTO.hooks convention and should apparently be eg
  45packagekit.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1699216] Re: Encrypted home support

2017-06-20 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Amazing, just last week I added this to my todo list, since I'd need it in
gnome-initial-setup.
I can test the patches, but ideally these should go upstream in the end.

I tried discover just after installing Kubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, and some software
was being displayed, but search was not working. I tried to install muon, and
did some software update (which seemed to work fine), and after that discover
would not display any software at all. Updates still work. Muon works fine,
except that search stops working after a while.
There are display issues on top of that, but that is not the worst problem.
Having the default software used for installing software on Kubuntu fail

I tried uninstalling plasma-discover and muon, purging them, and reinstalling
them, but that did not change anything. The current version is plasma-discover

+ * A previous update made AppStream use modern-style component-ids, thereby
breaking the Qt library if it is reading data from the cache and if that data
happens to be a desktop-application.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1673258] Re: Remove aptdaemon and drop or port its reverse-dependencies

2017-03-17 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Would be quite cool to make the language-selector use "localization" AppStream
components to detect missing locale... That would also make it work easily with
PackageKit.
=>
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/sect-Metadata-Localization.html

This would require some bigger effort though to generate the appropriate
metadata (I will look into it though, since long-term I would like to
have a solution like this at Debian as well).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1663695] Re: Kubuntu 16.04.1 discover empty after fresh install

2017-03-27 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I just wanted to reject that assumption because the version of AppStream in
Xenial was too old, but it turns out you're right: A backport from a newer
version broke this, and I didn't notice because my AppStreamQt is also newer
(and using a better architecture where this bug can't happen anymore).
So, +1 on the patch. I would probably when we are patching this, also add a few
minor fixes to the autopkgtests in Xenial (I might do that tomorrow).

Having the default software used for installing software on Kubuntu fail
completely is a rather big issue...
I tried uninstalling plasma-discover and muon, purging them, and reinstalling
them, but that did not change anything. The current version is plasma-discover
5.6.2.

Is there anything I can do to work around the bug ?

This is the output I get when starting it from the CLI:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1661371] Re: [zesty] doesn't offer a window to install missing gstreamer codecs

2017-02-20 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Looks like it might be a good idea to get rid of sessioninstaller, since GNOME
Software provides the PackageKit session interface properly already - but since
Ubuntu doesn't use the PK backend of GS, I assume that the PK session API will
also not work in Ubuntu's version of GNOME Software.
Maybe try uninstalling sessioninstaller and see if GNOME Software pops up with
the right package or at least an error message.

I guess this problem might only really be fixed by switching GS to use
PK or alternatively make the PK session interface work in GS by other
means (or, of course, by fixing sessioninstaller, but since that thing
is essentially dead I assume that this would not be a viable option).

Title:
Unclear AppStream message in `update` output

Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When I run `apt update`, I see an AppStream message in the output:

  $ sudo apt update

  Fetched 42.5 MB in 15s (2,842 kB/s)

The AppStream system cache was updated, but some components were ignored.
Refer to the verbose log for more information.
  Reading package lists... Done
  Building dependency tree
  Reading state information... Done
23 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.

Even as an Ubuntu developer, I don't know what that means, so I would
imagine most of our users won't either. What effect will this have on
me? Is it something I should worry about? Should I be looking at the
verbose log whenever I see this message? Where is the verbose log?

I think this message could serve to see some improvement, to make it
clearer to users what has happened and what their expected actions
  are.

Neat :-) That should do the job for all combinations of snap-store and
gnome-software, once the GS patch is in there as well.
Thanks Ken for doing the integration work :-)

   * Some apt packages do not include an icon in snap-store

   * Open snap-store, search for GCompris and confirm there is an

  [Regression Potential]

   * Very low. Previous Ubuntu releases including apt-config-icons

Bug description:
upower 0.99 needs uploading for gnome 3.12 to enter ubuntu. It drops
the suspend/hibernate functions, as logind now does that. All major
DEs have support for this,so nearly everything just needs a rebuild.
  This bug tracks the transition.

A transition is required as some features were removed and the SONAME
  was changed

All packages (and build logs) are staged in
  https://launchpad.net/~noskcaj/+archive/upower/+packages

sugar will probably need removing. If a package only needs a rebuild,
mark it fix commited, if something else is needed, in progress.

  cairo-dock-plug-ins: needs rebuilding
gnome-shell - ready, just need to drop upower revert.
  gnome-control-center: WIP
gnome-packagekit: Upower dropped from newest upstream release.
gnome-power-manager: Fixed in newest upstream release. Merge from debian
gnome-session: Done in ppa, needs patches from git or new upstream release
gnome-settings-daemon: 3.12 is ready out of the box, however that also
requires gnome-desktop transition. 3.8 and also u-s-d: I have a package that is
mostly working, however had to cherry-pick quite a few patches and may just be
better to backport 3.12 power plugin. (considering g-s-d patches will be
temporary, but u-s-d not so)
kde: works fine with systemd, suspend broken with upstart, no rebuilds needed
  cinnamon: Rebuild
mate: all mate packages need rebuilding
  python-dbusmock: needs rebuild
sugar: Upstream bug now filed. Unlikely to be ready in time for 14.10. We
should remove this from the archive till the next upstream release
telepathy-mission-control-5: Debian has dropped upower support, so it's done
  wmbattery: needs rebuild
  xfce4-power-manager: Needs rebuilding
xfce4-session: Fixed already, since we switched to logind
  xfce4-settings: Needs rebuild
  xfce4-systemload-plugin: needs rebuild

  2) insighttoolkit
  Superseded by insighttoolkit4
it doesn't build on powerpc, so we have to remove binaries here
(sorry, but Debian maintains only amd64 and i386, and we can't maintain all
the others including powerpc)

just removing vmtk/powerpc should allow its removal too

  3) vtk
  Superseded by vtk6

  needs vmtk migration

Debian broke it, because it is already broken, and it has little fix in time

(probably we will remove in Debian soon)

  5) pepperflashplugin-nonfree [i386]
please remove on i386 (removed in Debian too)
upstream is not supporting it, so it can't be downloaded/installed on i386
anymore

  6) singular [armhf]
  removed in Debian too

  7) fpc [powerpc]
  powerpc sadness with glib 2.23

  8) mame [ppc64el]

I don't care about simgear/armhf, because it is unlikely for such a game to
run on thar architecture.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548480] Re: 95packagekit sleep hook weirdly installed in a subdirectory is ignored

2016-02-22 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Ubuntu ships a prehistoric version of PackageKit - new releases of PK
don't include that particular configuration file anymore, so the problem
is - kind of - solved.

95packagekit sleep hook weirdly installed in a subdirectory is ignored

Status in packagekit package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The 95packagekit sleep hook provided by packagekit is installed in a
subdirectory:
  /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/95packagekit/95packagekit

  This has two effects:

  1the hook is not run;

  This issue was observed in 14.04, packagekit 0.8.12-1ubuntu5;
apparently was OK in 12.04. A packaging bug seems to have appeared
when 95packagekit was updated in revision 1.2.10.

Additionally, the hook 95packagekit is incorrectly numbered according
to the pm-utils HOWTO.hooks convention and should apparently be eg
  45packagekit.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1548480] Re: 95packagekit sleep hook weirdly installed in a subdirectory is ignored

2016-02-23 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Your analysis is correct :)
I would of course prefer b) (maybe I need to lobby more for Ubuntu finally
updating their 2y old PackageKit...), but any other option is fine.
Since I don't have upload access to Ubuntu, and this problem doesn't exist in
Debian, someone else would need to take care of this on Ubuntu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1496292] Re: Needs to be ported to packagekit 1

2016-05-24 Thread Matthias Klumpp
FWIW, just making Aptdaemon stop to pretend to be PackageKit and then adjust
the dependent packages to not require the compat layer explicitly should also
do the job.
(we did that at Debian, and right now, only one package still explicitly
depends on Aptd (but that one is using Aptd-specific API)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1466587] Re: PackageKit doesn't respect phased updates

Patches welcome! :)

Title:
  PackageKit doesn't respect phased updates

Status in packagekit package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
PackageKit-based tools, such as pkcon and pk-update-icon, do not
respect Ubuntu phased updates. As far as I can tell, they do not
provide a way to access or react to the Phased-Update-Percentage field
in an apt package index at all.

The result is that utilities based on PackageKit disagree with
Ubuntu's native tools about what packages are ready for update.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1553211] Re: Ubuntu should provide a default graphical method to install technical packages (plugins, kernels, terminal apps)

2016-06-25 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I think GNOME Software is the wrong choice for installing non-app system
packages.
So, in total there are three choices:

1) Use GNOME PackageKit for local package installs
2) Use GDebi
3) Hack GNOME Software to make local package installations work somehow.

Ubuntu 16.04 will be useless for "normal" people if they can't find every
software package as they did before.
To force users to use gnome-software will be a regression!

  Examples:

In old Software Center, you could add gimp plug-ins (plug-ins are recommends
and suggests packages of gimp) by going in gimp description and check the
plug-ins you want!
In old Software Center, you could install another version of linux kernel by
typing "linux" then click at bottom left to show the packages.

Now, they have to use apt-get or install synaptic!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1562733] Re: apt signature requierements prevent updates from some repositories

2016-05-10 Thread Matthias Klumpp
With your fix, we don't need to touch AppStream at all, since it would
just work. Which would mean we could close the issue in "appstream" as
invalid then...

apt signature requierements prevent updates from some repositories

Status in appstream package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in apt package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Since xenial updated the requirements for the strength of PGP
signatures of packages, packages from some repositories are no longer
updated. Apt-get update reports these errors:

E: Failed to fetch http://[...]/Release No Hash entry in Release file
/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/[...] which is considered strong enough for security
purposes
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

While the motivation for the change is valid, the result is a
potential security problem, as the new versions of the packages that
may fix recently discovered vulnerabilities are not automatically
  installed.

One less important but unfortunate effect is a scary message that is
displayed to the user, without clear explanation that the problem
needs to be addressed by the repository owner.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1572778] Re: /usr/lib/packagekit/packagekitd:11:strlen:__add_to_environ:__setenv:AptIntf::init:backend_get_updates_thread

2016-04-21 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I really wonder why this issue appears now, especially since Ubuntu isn't using
PK itself...
Might be due to the backported patches, or even some non-backported stuff in
combination with changes in APT (the aptcc backend evolved a lot in the last 3
years).

2014-08-26 Thread Matthias Klumpp
Sounds like a Listaller message - you should not be able to install these with
this PK version, but the service shiould also not crash.
Can you paste the output of apt-cache policy listaller here?
Where did you get the package from?
