I made the HWE upgrade on a second machine as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack Steam broke on the second machine as well. It wouldn't even let me install Steam. I had to remove, update, then install again. I had 14.04 then 14.04.1 - I moved forward with HWE. Steam is now broken, but worked find before. Somehow, the Steam client was removed during the HWE upgrade.
