[Touch-packages] [Bug 2085382] [NEW] lightdm is endlessly starting and dying in a several seconds cycle
Public bug reported: since the upgrade from 24.04 to 24.10 the lightdm login does not work anymore and is starting and then immediately dying in a very fast cycle. the only way to stop the endless cycle is to quickly try to switch to the linux vt and press ctrl-alt-del for reboot and then use systemrescuecd to run "dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" in a chroot to switch to gdm3 login. i was checking various logs but could not find anything obvious except for the segfault in the seat0-greeter.log (attached). [Touch-packages] [Bug 2018539] Re: File selector extremely slow
I'm also having this issue with the gtk file selector after upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04. Nautilus was also very slow to open folders with many files, switched to Nemo because it was too frustrating. Can't seem to do anything about the file selector though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to gtk+3.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2018539 Title: File selector extremely slow Status in gtk+3.0 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in gtk4 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When you try to upload/download a file in an application (e.g. Firefox, Signal, etc) the file selector that opens is extremely slow to appear, search and change directory. Often times, if I try to search for a file in it, I have to wait 10 or more second before the letters I typed appear, and most of the time the last letter I pressed when typing, will appear before the rest of what I wrote, meaning I have to wait for my query to be deleted before I re-type it again. This has only just started since upgrading to Ubuntu 23.04. I noticed that Nautilus has been faster in general since the update, but in the file selector specifically, it's become unusable. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2085377] [NEW] transmission-gtk fails to start in separate network namespace
Public bug reported: The symptom is that I am no longer unable to start transmission-gtk in a separate network namespace. This worked in the past. I have been impacted by this bug since upgrading from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04. Some context: Why would someone run a torrent client in a network namespace? It is very convenient for example if one wants to run torrent traffic through a VPN tunnel while keeping rest of the system connected normally (without VPN). Relevant package versions: - transmission-gtk: 4.0.5-1build5 - apparmor: 4.0.1really4.0.1-0ubuntu0.24.04.3 How to reproduce: 1. Create a network namespace for running transmission-gtk (for the purposes of this demonstration it does not matter that the new namespace we create does not have any internet connectivity): $ sudo ip netns add foo $ sudo -E ip netns exec foo sudo -E -u $USER bash 2. Now try starting transmission-gtk in that namespace and observe failure: $ transmission-gtk & [1] 2013757 (transmission-gtk:2013757): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:13:37.265: Failed to open display [1]+ Exit 1 transmission-gtk 3. Check why it fails with strace (observe it gets "permission denied" when trying to connect to wayland socket): $ strace transmission-gtk execve("/usr/bin/transmission-gtk", ["transmission-gtk"], 0x7fff327128d0 /* 67 vars */) = 0 [..] socket(AF_UNIX, SOCK_STREAM|SOCK_CLOEXEC, 0) = 5 connect(5, {sa_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/run/user/1000/wayland-0"}, 27) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) [..] exit_group(1) = ? +++ exited with 1 +++ 4. Also observe messages such as the following appear in /var/log/syslog: 2024-10-22T19:32:27.557750+03:00 XXX kernel: audit: type=1400 audit(1729614747.556:11615): apparmor="ALLOWED" operation="connect" class="file" info="Failed name lookup - disconnected path" error=-13 profile="transmission-gtk" name="run/user/1000/wayland-0" pid=1978576 comm="transmission-gt" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=1000 ouid=1000 5. Implement workaround (add "attach_disconnected" to apparmor profile flags): $ sudo sed -i 's/transmission-gtk flags=(complain)/transmission-gtk flags=(complain,attach_disconnected)/' /etc/apparmor.d/transmission $ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/transmission 6. Observe now it starts successfully in the same network namespace: $ transmission-gtk & $ I do not know what is the correct way to fix this properly. I am not familiar enough with apparmor. According to apparmor.d(5) manual page that "attach_disconnected" flag should not be used except for debugging and policy development. This is in addition to pre-existing controls in ssh-agent(1) and sshd(8) that prevented coredumps. - All: convert key handling to use the libcrypto EVP_PKEY API, with the exception of DSA. - sshd(8): add a random amount of jitter (up to 4 seconds) to the grace login time to make its expiry unpredictable. - sshd(8): fix regression introduced in openssh-9.8 that swapped the order of source and destination addresses in some sshd log messages. - sshd(8): do not apply authorized_keys options when signature verification fails. Prevents more restrictive key options being incorrectly applied to subsequent keys in authorized_keys. - ssh-keygen(1): include pathname in some of ssh-keygen's passphrase prompts. Helps the user know what's going on when ssh-keygen is invoked via other tools. - ssh(1), ssh-add(1): make parsing user@host consistently look for the last '@' in the string rather than the first. This makes it possible to more consistently use usernames that contain '@' characters. - ssh(1), sshd(8): be more strict in parsing key type names. Only allow short names (e.g 'rsa') in user-interface code and require full SSH protocol names (e.g. 'ssh-rsa') everywhere else. - regress: many performance and correctness improvements to the re-keying regression test. - ssh-keygen(1): clarify that ed25519 is the default key type generated and clarify that rsa-sha2-512 is the default signature scheme when RSA is in use. - sshd(8):

** Description changed: [Impact] The graphics HWE stack from oracular needs to be backported for 24.04.2 libdrm - build-dep of mesa spirv-llvm-translator - build-dep of llvm llvm-toolchain-19 - new source in noble - build-dep of mesa - required for new AMD platforms - needs two uploads: * 1st stage bootstrap build * 2nd stage after spirv-llvm-translator has built against 1st stage mesa - new major release (24.2.x) - new HW support, Lunar Lake, Battlemage.. + meson + - needed by mesa + - tests disabled because four irrelevant ones fail for some reason, doesn't + affect the mesa backport + [Test case] We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to switch to the NVIDIA driver after installation. No need to test ancient GPU's supported by mesa-amber. And best to focus on the newer generations (~5y and newer) as the older ones are less likely to break at this point. - AMD: Vega, Navi1x (RX5000*), Navi2x (RX6000*), Navi3x (RX7000*) - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12 (TGL/ADL/RKL/RPL/DG2) Install the new packages and run some tests: - check that the desktop is still using hw acceleration and hasn't fallen back to swrast/llvmpipe - run freely available benchmarks that torture the GPU (Unigine Heaven/Valley/Superposition) - run some games from Steam if possible and in each case check that there is no gfx corruption happening or worse. Note that upstream releases have already been tested for OpenGL and Vulkan conformance by their CI. [Where things could go wrong] This is a major update of Mesa, there could be regressions but we'll try to catch any with testing. And since it shares bugs with noble, we'd already know if there are serious issues. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to libdrm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2083020 Title: Backport packages for 24.04.2 HWE stack Status in libdrm package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in llvm-toolchain-19 package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in mesa package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in spirv-llvm-translator-19 package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in libdrm source package in Noble: New Status in llvm-toolchain-19 source package in Noble: Confirmed Status in mesa source package in Noble: Confirmed Status in spirv-llvm-translator-19 source package in Noble: New Bug description: [Impact] The graphics HWE stack from oracular needs to be backported for 24.04.2 libdrm - build-dep of mesa spirv-llvm-translator - build-dep of llvm llvm-toolchain-19 - new source in noble - build-dep of mesa - required for new AMD platforms - needs two uploads: * 1st stage bootstrap build * 2nd stage after spirv-llvm-translator has built against 1st stage mesa - new major release (24.2.x) - new HW support, Lunar Lake, Battlemage.. meson - needed by mesa - tests disabled because four irrelevant ones fail for some reason, doesn't affect the mesa backport [Test case] We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to switch to the NVIDIA driver after installation. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2080216] Re: sshd cannot bind to IPv4 interfaces
Any estimate when the fixed version will be available in Ubuntu 24.04 without -proposal repos? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssh in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2080216 Title: sshd cannot bind to IPv4 interfaces Status in openssh package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in openssh source package in Noble: In Progress Bug description: [Impact] The default listening sockets for sshd are different depending on whether socket activation is used or not, even when /etc/ssh/sshd_config is the default. E.g.: # Socket-activated root@n2:~# systemctl status ssh.socket ● ssh.socket - OpenBSD Secure Shell server socket Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/ssh.socket; enabled; preset: enabled) Active: active (listening) since Tue 2024-10-01 20:36:15 UTC; 12min ago Triggers: ● ssh.service Listen: [::]:22 (Stream) CGroup: /system.slice/ssh.socket Oct 01 20:36:15 n2 systemd[1]: Listening on ssh.socket - OpenBSD Secure Shell server socket. root@n2:~# lsof -i :22 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME systemd 1 root 47u IPv6 2781411 0t0 TCP *:ssh (LISTEN) # Non-socket-activated root@n2:~# systemctl disable --now ssh.socket Removed "/etc/systemd/system/ssh.service.requires/ssh.socket". However, the fact remains that the resulting listening sockets are different in these two cases, and socket- activated ssh does not accurately reflect the settings in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. [Test Plan] 1. Check that on a noble system, without custom sshd_config, sshd is listening on both IPv4 and IPv6 on port 22: $ lsof -i :22 2. Check that setting AddressFamily to e.g. inet results in only an IPv4 socket: $ echo "AddressFamily inet" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/custom.conf $ systemctl daemon-reload $ systemctl restart ssh.socket $ lsof -i :22 There should only be one listener now. 3. Check the same thing with inet6, and a custom port for good measure: $ echo "AddressFamily inet6" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/custom.conf $ echo "Port 1234" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/custom.conf $ systemctl daemon-reload $ systemctl restart ssh.socket $ lsof -i :1234 4. The new tests in debian/tests/sshd-socket-generator should all pass in autopkgtest. [Where problems could occur] The fix requires new default settings in the [Socket] section of ssh.socket, and handling for new defaults in sshd-socket-generator. It would be more likely to see problems with the generator as opposed to the changes in ssh.socket. However, new subtests were added to debian/tests/sshd-socket-generator to help avoid this. [Original Description] After upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04 I noticed that my sshd only listening on IPv6 interface (::), while previously it was listening both IPv4 (0.0.0.0) and IPv6 (::). I tried to explicitly specify ListenAddress 0.0.0.0 (assuming it would bind to IPv4 only) but after restart sshd was still listening on IPv6 only. This problem affects other packages as well, for example, openvpn. Rebuilding applications from sources seems to fix the issue. Setting net.ipv6.bindv6only=0 also helps, but that's not a solution. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2071815] Re: Investigate ASLR re-randomization being disabled for children
Hello Marc, or anyone else affected, Accepted openssh into noble-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/1:9.6p1-3ubuntu13.6 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed- noble to verification-done-noble. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification- failed-noble. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed. Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping! N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu Noble) Status: In Progress => Fix Committed ** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-noble -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssh in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2071815 Title: Investigate ASLR re-randomization being disabled for children Status in openssh package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in openssh source package in Noble: Fix Committed Bug description: [Impact] The systemd-socket-activation.patch patch has an Ubuntu delta to fix bug 2011458, but this results in ASLR not being re-randomized for children because the patch delta does "rexec_flag = 0;". This was discovered as part of the CVE-2024-6387 discovery by Qualys, and is mentioned in the disclosure itself: Side note: we discovered that Ubuntu 24.04 does not re-randomize the ASLR of its sshd children (it is randomized only once, at boot time); we tracked this down to the patch below, which turns off sshd's rexec_flag. This is generally a bad idea, but in the particular case of this signal handler race condition, it prevents sshd from being exploitable: the syslog() inside the SIGALRM handler does not call any of the malloc functions, because it is never the very first call to syslog(). This is also mentioned in the release notes of OpenSSH 9.8: Exploitation on non-glibc systems is conceivable but has not been examined. Systems that lack ASLR or users of downstream Linux distributions that have modified OpenSSH to disable per-connection ASLR re-randomisation (yes - this is a thing, no - we don't understand why) may potentially have an easier path to exploitation. We should investigate why that was needed, and if an alternative way of fixing the original bug can be done. [Test Plan] We just want to test that when a connection is accepted by sshd, the child process re-execs. There is a log message at the debug level from sshd when this happens. 1. Enable debug-level logging in sshd: $ echo "LogLevel DEBUG" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/log-level.conf 2. Watch the logs: $ journalctl -t sshd -b -f 3. From another host, connect to the test machine: $ ssh @ 4. On the test machine, among other messages, there should be a message noting the start of the re-exec, e.g.: sshd[2212]: debug1: rexec start in 6 out 6 newsock 6 pipe 8 sock 9 [Where problems could occur] Through the iterations of d/p/systemd-socket-activation.patch, there have been issues related to the re-exec behavior, and how the listen fds passed by systemd are handled. See [1][2] for examples. This patch hopes to finally resolve these issues. However, as was the case with previous bugs in this area, problems would most likely be related to incorrectly closing, or not closing, socket fds in sshd. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2069041] Re: Changing Port in sshd_config requires calling systemctl daemon-reload
Hello teutat3s, or anyone else affected, Accepted openssh into noble-proposed. Users may change e.g. Port in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and expect systemctl restart ssh.service to reflect the change, but this will not work. [Test Plan] 1. The proposed fix here is to improve the documentation by adding a comment above the default Port setting in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Hence, the test is to simply install openssh-server from noble-proposed, and verify that the comment is there. 2. Because the patch changes the default sshd_config, and debian/openssh-server.ucf-md5sum needs to be updated when this happens, an upgrade from noble to oracular should be done after installing openssh-server from noble-proposed. If a debconf prompt is shown, then a mistake was made in recording the checksums. Otherwise, they are correct. [Where problems could occur] There is low technical risk, but we should be sure that the documentation is clear and improves the experience of users. It could be harmful if the documentation accidentally makes things worse, or is just confusing. Also, a packaging quirk of openssh-server is that checksums of the patched sshd_config (along with certain settings tweaked) need to be recorded in debian/openssh-server.ucf-md5sum to avoid unnecessary debconf prompts on upgrades. I have updated those checksums, but if they are incorrent, then in future upgrades users might see an unnecessary debconf prompt about /etc/ssh/sshd_config. [Original Description] Changing the Port directive in sshd_config and restarting ssh.service is without effect, sshd keeps listening to port 22. Also mentioned in https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/sshd-now-uses-socket- based-activation-ubuntu-22-10-and-later/30189/32 Steps to reproduce: 1. Install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS 2. Change Port directive in /etc/ssh/sshd_config to Port 2233 3. Restart ssh.service 4. Observe sshd still listening to port 22 Expected behaviour: sshd changes port to 2233 Actual behaviour: sshd keeps listening to port 22 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+bug/2069041/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

This means no custom config is applied at all. [Test Plan] 1. On a noble system with sshd installed, create a drop-in config with a Match directive, and run the generator locally: $ cat > /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/custom.conf << EOF Port 1234 Match LocalPort 22 PasswordAuthentication no EOF $ /lib/systemd/system-generators/sshd-socket-generator . 'Match LocalPort' in configuration but 'lport' not in connection test specification. On an affected system, the above error will be shown. On a patched system, the generator will succeed, and ./ssh.socket.d/addresses.conf will reflect the Port 1234 option. 2. A new subtest was added to debian/tests/sshd-socket-generator, test_match_port. It does the same as the above, and should pass in autopkgtest. [Where problems could occur] This patch simply removes the code from sshd-socket-generator that tries to parse the match config. If problems did occur, it would be related to the generator again. Specifically, it would likely be related to missing/unparsed options. However, new subtests were added to debian/tests/sshd-socket-generator to

The re-introduction of Ubuntu FAN should be considered as a temporary measure, aimed at facilitating a smooth transition during its deprecation without disrupting existing users (specifically Juju), and enabling the backporting of 6.8 kernels to older releases. The main plan is still to deprecate Ubuntu FAN at some point in the future. [Test case] Rely on the specific Ubuntu FAN regression test to validate the proper kernel support of this feature: https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+git/autotest-client- tests/tree/ubuntu_fan_smoke_test?h=autotest3 [Fix] Re-apply the Ubuntu FAN patch set to the latest Noble kernel 6.8 and integrate the IFLA_VXLAN_FAN_MAP attribute type in vxlan_policy to satisfy the strict length validation check. [Regression potential] We may experience regressions with eBPF vxlan capabilities and potentially specific use cases of the Ubuntu FAN technology (Juju installations). These have been fixed on Oracular and can now be ported to Noble. [Proposed fix] Previously, tests run via dh_auto_test were failing and the error ignored. See https://launchpadlibrarian.net/722365230/buildlog_ubuntu- noble-amd64.libdmapsharing_3.9.13-2build1_BUILDING.txt.gz for the log of the build of the package currently in noble. Running the test suite was calling `make check`, rebuilding the binaries with specific CFLAGS and replacing the ones previously built with proper CLFAGS. These binaries were then packaged into the deb. Not running the tests was found to be the best solution until upstream maintainers fix the way test binaries are built. [ Test Plan ] Look at the DW_AT_producer in the associated debug ELF file for flags. -fno-omit-frame-pointer should be present after the fix. The following scripts can be used as a reference https://gist.github.com/julian-klode/85e3f85c410a1b856a93dce77208 https://gist.github.com/julian-klode/95818246eaef0ac6a54588f7f368e25c -fno-omit-frame-pointer is also present in build logs and now binaries are not rebuilt without this flag anymore to run tests. Smoke test I ran: Download https://www2.cs.uic.edu/~i101/SoundFiles/StarWars3.wav (or any wav file) sudo apt install rhythmbox sudo dpkg -i libdmapsharing-4.0-3t64_3.9.13-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb I was unable to find a daap server in the archive (I even tried to configure rhythmbox/xmms2/vlc to do it, without any luck) so I had to use owntone in a container. A simpler solution may exist though. mkdir -p scratch/owntone/{etc,media,cache} cp StarWars3.wav scratch/owntone/media/ docker run -d \ --name=OwnTone \ --network=host \ -e UID=$(id -u) \ -e GID=$(id -g) \ -v $HOME/scratch/owntone/etc:/etc/owntone \ -v $HOME/scratch/owntone/media:/srv/media \ -v $HOME/scratch/owntone/cache:/var/cache/owntone \ --restart unless-stopped \ docker.io/owntone/owntone:latest At this point owntone is sharing the wav file over DAAP. Launch rhythmbox. An entry in the `Shared` section of the left menu should be visible. StarWars3.wav should be playable. [ Where problems could occur ] No source changes are made. The packaging fixes have enabled other security hardening flags. This could have unintended effects. [ Other Info ] Changes in dpkg have been made to make sure frame-pointers are not enabled on s390x and ppc64el. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2074212] Re: [SRU] Enable frame-pointer on Noble in libdmapsharing
Fixed the version again per Paride's comment. ** Patch added: "debdiff-libdmapsharing-noble.diff" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdmapsharing/+bug/2074212/+attachment/5830759/+files/debdiff-libdmapsharing-noble.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to libdmapsharing in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2074212 Title: [SRU] Enable frame-pointer on Noble in libdmapsharing Status in libdmapsharing package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in libdmapsharing source package in Noble: New Bug description: [ Impact ] In order to help developers with profiling, Ubuntu enabled frame- pointers for packages in the main archive. https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-performance-engineering-with-frame- pointers-by-default The `Affects` packages were missed due to the packaging issues. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2080216] Re: sshd cannot bind to IPv4 interfaces
This is waiting on review from the SRU team. Many of the SRU team members are also busy with opening the archive for 25.04 and other things this week, but I will ping them. Once it is accepted into noble-proposed, it will be at least a week until it moves to noble-updates.
