Title:
  [21.04] Uncooperative WiFi manager on TTY7 for proper end user
  integration

Status in Ubuntu MATE:
  New
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Desc.:
  Using 21.04-latest on a Dell XPS 13" laptop and working on TTY7, the wifi
manager becomes uncooperative after, it seems, it gets tied up to 2 wifi
profiles.

  Recreation steps:
  1. Install 21.04-latest + full patch it using your home LAN WiFi AP;
  2. Login newly installed system + test Internet = it works fine;
  3. Take same laptop and go to a hotel(for example): manually create a new
profile for the new WiFi network from TTY7, login "hotel" wifi network profile
+ test Internet = it works fine;
  4. Physically move back to where your "home" LAN WiFi profile is and boot
system:

  Problem now happens::
  1. Internet doesn't work off WiFi;
  2. Click on the "Wi-Fi Network" icon at the top hand right side of the screen
-> "no network devices available";
  3. Select "Edit connections" -> there will be your 2 profiles there: "home"
and "hotel", delete "hotel" -> OK;
  4. "no network devices available" still shows under "Wi-Fi Network" at the
top.
  MY USER EXPECTATIONS: Get a new list of close by AP and/or automatically
reconnect to "profile 1: home".
  NOTA: Both profiles are set to priority 0 and also all set to "all uses may
connect to this network". Could this be the problem?

  Solution:
  Reboot system.
  After reboot. TTY7 will have defaulted back to the "home" WiFi profile and
Internet will work at the first user attempt.

  xo

  PS: I have been having this problem from way before hirsute.

  This version switches the yr.no backend to use met.no instead. Please note
  that this backport is only meant as a compatibility layer. Where at all
  possible, the newer libgweather 40 should be used as applications cannot
  fully comply with the met.no ToS otherwise.

  [Test case]

  - gnome-weather shows the weather forecast
  - gnome-shell shows the weather forecast in the calendar menu

  - Weather forecast is totally broken now and can't be more broken.

  Using a Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 12.04.

  In order to restore RF interfaces to their previous state between
  boots, rfkill is run via two Upstart jobs in /etc/init/: rfkill-
  store.conf (run while shutting down) and rfkill-restore.conf (run when
  starting up). However, while rfkill-restore.conf starts on the Upstart
  local-filesystems signal, there is a high probability that the RF kill
  switches in /sys/class/rfkill/ still won't yet be populated (i.e.
  every time on the Dell XPS 13). This results in behavior like the
  following:

  1. Disable bluetooth via applet.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Login.
  4. Observe bluetooth is re-enabled!

  Bluetooth should have stayed disabled, but since the kill switches
  weren't present when rfkill-restore was run, the kill switch states
  were not restored.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1942703] [NEW] Remove-Unused-Kernel-Packages leaves unused linux-hwe-.*-headers-.* packages around

2021-09-05 Thread Jarno Suni
Public bug reported:

If user has linux-generic-hwe-18.04 installed, versioned linux-headers
packages depend on versioned linux-hwe-5.4-headers packages that will
not get removed. Consequently in time there will be hundreds of
thousands of unused files under /usr/src. For example I have about
45 totalling 1.4 GB. The number of inodes may be bigger issue,
because file systems have some limitations.

I noted the issue when using my linux-purge tool. It is supposed to be
able to remove kernels, even if the file system runs out of inodes.

  1) Menu -> ibus
  -
  - opens iBus settings
  - starts ibus service

  Problems:
- No keyboard input is actually processed; I.e. cannot use keyboard then.
- Service is not daemonized; I.e. as soon as the iBus settings window is
closed, the services quits.

  Suggestion:
- No keyboard input possible seems to be a bug -> should be fixed.
- Service should be daemonized at this point

  2) terminal -> `ibus start`
  ---
  Problems:
- This command does not exist. One has to know, that `ibus-daemon` is the
one they are searching for.

  Suggestions:
- Implement this command to start the daemon from here

  3) terminal -> `ibus-daemon &` / `ibus-daemon -d`
  -
   - brings up ibus with usable keyboard (good)

  Problems:
- As soon as terminal gets closed, ibus-daemon quits

  4) terminal -> `nohup ibus-daemon &`
  -
   - brings up ibus with usable keyboard (good)

  Problem:
- As soon as terminal gets closed, ibus-daemon quits (very strange.
something I wouldn't expect from a `nohup` call, by the way).

Status in gwenview package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Since the recent security update of exiv2, Gwenview crashes when
  trying to open image files that got exported by darktable.

  Steps to reproduce:

  * Make a test installation of Kubuntu 21.04 in VirtualBox
  * Install all updates
  * Install darktable
  * Copy one of the images in /usr/share/wallpapers (or any other image) to
your home directory and open it with darktable
  * Within darktable, export a copy of the image (no need to do any actual
modifications)
  * Try to open that copy with Gwenview. Gwenview will crash.

  I'm attaching a crash report hinting that this is related to exiv2.

  Temporary workaround:
  If I downgrade libexiv2-27 to 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.4, Gwenview doesn't crash, so
it seems the crash is related to changes in 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5.

  I don't know if the underlying cause is actually some bug in exiv2,
  Gwenview or darktable.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1900640] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 has no capability of surrounding-text feature

2021-09-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
According to upstream this is an issue with Google Chrome and gnome-
terminal and not IBus.

A workaround when using ibus-libthai is to choose the "No Check" option
under the "Input sequence check mode" category.

Bug description:
  I recently upgrade my Ubuntu LTS from 18.04 to 20.04.
  After the upgrade, I failed to type Thai text with any combining character in
some apps.
  The log contains this error message:
  `gnome-shell[2076]: (google-chrome-stable:2069): IBUS-WARNING **:
09:07:10.843: google-chrome-stable has no capability of surrounding-text
feature`
  `gnome-terminal-[2589]: gnome-terminal-server has no capability of
surrounding-text feature`

  Expected behavior: Capable of typing any Thai character in any app.
  Actual behavior: Only few apps support typing Thai character, e.g. Firefox,
Gnome Text Editor.

  Step to reproduce:
  1. Boot up the machine.
  2. Open Google Chrome.
  3. Switch keyboard layout to `Thai (LibThai)`
  4. Type Thai text "กิน" which is equals to following keystroke "dbo" but with
Thai keyboard layout.

  Current workaround:
  Whenever you want to type Thai switch
  1. Open `Gnome Text Editor`
  2. Switch keyboard layout to `Thai (LibThai)`
  3. Switch to Chrome
  4. Type Thai

  Failed to suspend system, hibernate later via logind: Sleep verb

  [regression potential]

  failure to correctly enter hybrid-sleep and/or suspend-then-hibernate,
  or other issues around suspending/hibernating

  [scope]

  This is needed in b and later.

  The bug appears to have been introduced by a typo in the original
  suspend-then-hibernate commit c58493c00af, and then fixed with larger
  changes in commit c8cd8ca3986.

  this is also present in b, by a backport of the functionality

  [other info]

  note that if hybrid-sleep is allowed/possible, then calling 'systemctl
  suspend-then-hibernate' does actually perform suspend-then-hibernate;
  this typo only controls what suspend action logind checks for support
  of, not what suspend action it actually performs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1934981] Re: systemctl suspend-then-hibernate attempts hybrid-sleep instead

2021-09-05 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

  [impact]

  suspend-then-hibernate not possible using systemctl

  [test case]

- configure a system to allow suspend-then-hibernate but not hybrid-sleep,
- e.g. by editing /etc/systemd/sleep.conf to set
- AllowSuspendThenHibernate=yes and AllowHybridSleep=no, then try it:
+ configure a system (that has enough swap to be able to hibernate) to
+ allow suspend-then-hibernate but not hybrid-sleep, e.g. by editing
+ /etc/systemd/sleep.conf to set AllowSuspendThenHibernate=yes and
+ AllowHybridSleep=no, then try it:

  $ sudo systemctl suspend-then-hibernate
  Failed to suspend system, hibernate later via logind: Sleep verb
"hybrid-sleep" not supported
+
+ note that on bionic, the Allow...= params do not exist, so the repro
+ instead can be done on a system without any configured swap, which will
+ show the incorrect sleep verb before, and correct sleep verb after the
+ fix.

  [regression potential]

  failure to correctly enter hybrid-sleep and/or suspend-then-hibernate,
  or other issues around suspending/hibernating

  [scope]

  This is needed in b and later.

  The bug appears to have been introduced by a typo in the original
  suspend-then-hibernate commit c58493c00af, and then fixed with larger
  changes in commit c8cd8ca3986.

  this is also present in b, by a backport of the functionality

  [other info]

  note that if hybrid-sleep is allowed/possible, then calling 'systemctl
  suspend-then-hibernate' does actually perform suspend-then-hibernate;
  this typo only controls what suspend action logind checks for support
  of, not what suspend action it actually performs.

Bug description:

  systemd may leak sessions, leaving empty cgroups around as well as
  abandoned session scopes.

  [test case]

  on a system where the user has a ssh key that allows noninteractive
  login to localhost, and also has noninteractive sudo, run:

  $ for i in {1..100}; do sudo -b -i -u ubuntu ssh localhost -- sleep 1;
  done; for i in {1..20}; do echo 'Reloading...'; sudo systemctl daemon-
  reload; done

  check the sessions to see there have been leaked sessions:

  $ loginctl list-sessions

  SESSION  UID USER   SEAT TTY
1 1000 ubuntu  ttyS0
  350 1000 ubuntu
  351 1000 ubuntu
  360 1000 ubuntu
  ...

  to verify the sessions were leaked, clear them out with:

  $ echo '' | sudo tee

/sys/fs/cgroup/unified/user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-*.scope/cgroup.events

  that should result in all the leaked sessions being cleaned up.

  [regression potential]

  issues during systemd pid1 reexec/reload, or issues while cleaning up
  sessions, including leaking sessions/cgroups

  [scope]

  this is needed for all releases

  upstream bug linked above, and upstream PR:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/20199

  [original description]

  On a system that is monitored via telegraf I found many abandoned
  systemd session which I believe are created by a potential race where
  systemd is reloading unit files and at the same time a user is
  connecting to the system via ssh or is executing the su command.

  The simple reproducer

  $ for i in {1..100}; do sleep 0.2; ssh localhost sudo systemctl
  daemon-reload & ssh localhost sleep 1 & done

  Wait > 1 second

  $ jobs -p | xargs --verbose --no-run-if-empty kill -KILL

  To clean out STOPPED jobs and

  $ systemctl status --all 2> /dev/null | grep --before-context 3
  abandoned

  will produce something similar to

     │ ├─  175 su - ubuntu
     │ ├─  178 -su
     │ ├─62375 systemctl status --all
     │ └─62376 grep --color=auto --before-context 3 abandoned

  systemd may leak sessions, leaving empty cgroups around as well as
  abandoned session scopes.

  [test case]

  on a system where the user has a ssh key that allows noninteractive
  login to localhost, and also has noninteractive sudo, run:

  $ for i in {1..100}; do sudo -b -i -u ubuntu ssh localhost -- sleep 1;
  done; for i in {1..20}; do echo 'Reloading...'; sudo systemctl daemon-
  reload; done

  check the sessions to see there have been leaked sessions:

  $ loginctl list-sessions

  SESSION  UID USER   SEAT TTY
1 1000 ubuntu  ttyS0
  350 1000 ubuntu
  351 1000 ubuntu
  360 1000 ubuntu
  ...

  to verify the sessions were leaked, clear them out with:

  $ echo '' | sudo tee

/sys/fs/cgroup/unified/user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-*.scope/cgroup.events

  that should result in all the leaked sessions being cleaned up.

  [regression potential]

  issues during systemd pid1 reexec/reload, or issues while cleaning up
  sessions, including leaking sessions/cgroups

  [scope]

  this is needed for all releases

  upstream bug linked above, and upstream PR:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/20199

  [original description]

  On a system that is monitored via telegraf I found many abandoned
  systemd session which I believe are created by a potential race where
  systemd is reloading unit files and at the same time a user is
  connecting to the system via ssh or is executing the su command.

  The simple reproducer

  $ for i in {1..100}; do sleep 0.2; ssh localhost sudo systemctl
  daemon-reload & ssh localhost sleep 1 & done

  Wait > 1 second

  $ jobs -p | xargs --verbose --no-run-if-empty kill -KILL

  To clean out STOPPED jobs and

  $ systemctl status --all 2> /dev/null | grep --before-context 3
  abandoned

  will produce something similar to

     │ ├─  175 su - ubuntu
     │ ├─  178 -su
     │ ├─62375 systemctl status --all
     │ └─62376 grep --color=auto --before-context 3 abandoned

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-09-05 Thread Hayden Clark
Sorry I was not clear enough.
When I said "Filled with" I meant that they were the files occupying space. I'm
sorry if that gave the idea that the corresponding vmlinuz-* files weren't
present - it was just that in terms of bytes occupied, the initrd files are the
big ones.

As you can see from the directory listings, this has been a problem,
and, since I'm using a Lenovo Thinkbook 15, I used the OEM kernel
install. I probably followed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/OEMKernel to
install it and it fixed my audio problems.

When removing kernels, I followed the instructions on the
RemoveOldKernels page once I found them.

What this bug is about is that when you somehow get a full /boot (from
whatever cause), the updates stop working. Since /boot is a finite
resource, it would be nice if the system could recover either
automatically, or in an easy-to-initiate way.

Thank you for my free operating system :-)

Title:
  Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  System calls /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools when
  purging/removing a linux-image-extra package. That calls "update-
  initramfs -c" which needs significant amount of additional disk space
  in /boot temporarily. But there is no space left, if /boot is full.

  Likewise /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms may call "update-initramfs -u".

  The fix could be to create the new initrg.img file in different partition
before replacing the old one by it in update-initramfs. So the update-initramfs
script should be fixed. But there may not be such a partition..
  Anyway the likely case when space runs out is when there is a separate /boot
partition.

  Alternatively the init scripts should remove the respective
/boot/initrd.img- file when removing/installing the linux-image-extra
package. That could also be done by
  update-initramfs -d -k
  That may be worse way, as then initrd.img file is missing for longer period
of time and system integrity may suffer in case of e.g. power cut.

  Related question: http://askubuntu.com/q/898499/21005
  The output of 'dpkg --purge' presented there shows that corresponding
linux-image package may get successfully removed while the linux-image-extra is
left broken. If the linux-image-extra package will be removed later, the
post-installation script will create an initrd.img file for a non-installed
kernel! Same would happen, if removing would be done by apt-get purge.

  systemd-time-wait-sync service sometimes misses sync completed event
  and remains in 'activating' state

  [test case]

  this isn't consistently reproducable, see original description for
  test case

  [regression potential]

  possible problems with the systemd-time-wait-sync service completing
  too early or not completing on time

  [scope]

  this is needed only for f

  this is fixed upstream with commit
  f6f4f5fe5395a57f10dd446c7266c53f0673eaac which is in v246, so this is
  fixed in h and later already

  the service does not exist in b so this does not apply there

  [original description]

  When I start my server running Ubuntu 20.04 the systemd-time-wait-
  sync.service is stuck in "activating" state. I noticed this because
  none of the systemd timer units triggered, because all the timers
  depend on systemd-time-wait-sync.service. Running "systemctl restart
  systemd-time-wait-sync.service" manually works around the problem.

  pid1 leaks memory when rebuilding unit path cache

  [test case]

  see original description.

  also, the patch contains an example of how to reproduce:

  $ for i in {1..300}; do cp ~/.config/systemd/user/test0001.service
  ~/.config/systemd/user/test$(printf %04d $i).service; systemctl --user
  start test$(printf %04d $i).service;done

  [regression]

  any problems would occur when rebuilding the path cache, possibly
  resulting in memory leaks or pid1 crashes.

  [scope]

  this is needed only in f

  fixed upstream by 3fb2326f3ed87aa0b26078d307ebfb299e36286d which is
  included in v246, so fixed in h and later

  the code in b is very different and doesn't appear to have the leak,
  per original report

  [original description]

  Hi everybody.

  We've meet a memory leak of pid1 process on the focal release.
  When we launch chef-client, several systemd .service and .timers are checked
for state.
  Every time of this run pid1 increase VSZ/RSS on ~ 232 Kb, this don't happen
on xenial and bionic releases.
  I straced pid1 when that leak happen and found brk call.
  On pmap view of pid 1 it's anon memory grow on the same address and all
marked as dirty.
  All that leak memory can be freed by calling systemctl daemon-reexec.

  Searching in systemd github repo i found this commit

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/3fb2326f3ed87aa0b26078d307ebfb299e36286d
  - it may be related to this leak.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-09-05 Thread Jarno Suni
Actually this bug report is not about updates stopping working. This is
about not being able to remove a kernel with related packages completely
by usual ways due to a specific reason, if /boot becomes full enough.
There are other bug reports that call for bigger /boot partition or an
automatic way of removing unused kernels.

You are welcome. Feel free to donate at https://launchpad.net/linux-
purge

Is it possible to respin the SRU for now? I need to correct the sku

I will upstream the fix first.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1942723] [NEW] Laptop wakes from sleep, no display

2021-09-05 Thread Anonymous
Public bug reported:

When I close the lid on my laptop to put Kubuntu to sleep, it wakes up
with a black screen - with the exception of a single blinking cursor (_)
in the upper left corner. Machine is clearly on. Turning off/back on
gets the machine back into a good state.

I had a prior installation of Kubuntu on this box and it did not have
this problem, though I do not remember if it had the nvidia drivers.

Bug description:
  Hello.

  I posted some weeks ago in pulseaudio bugtracker
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/issues/1249
  about an issue, but i was thinking it should be better have here the
  issue too because maybe is related with other components in (K)Ubuntu
  system.

  I will go to a copy paste, because it self explanatory:

  ---

  * Context:

  OS: KUbuntu 21.04 with kernel 5.14.0rc4 mainline.
  Laptop: Asus Zenbook UMD431D with ALC294
  pa-info: pa-info.txt (attached)

  Also recently was fixed an issue with alsa about the 4 speakers volume
  (two of them weren't affected by it
  https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212547) however, this
  doesn't seems related to that. (That's why i use 5.14.0rc4, because
  5.14 are the first with the patch).

  * Issue behaviour and description

  The main issue can be seen in the next video:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBrHi1f9bck

  Summarizing, when you go up and down the KDE volume, if you compared
  the desired volume in the slider with alsamixer doesn't match. But the
  issue is when you reach below 9%, with that the Master volume in
  alsamixer is 0%, so there isn't any sound, and between 1%~8% it's
  changing the "Speaker" slider, doing nothing. It's like the "Speaker"
  slider is stacked below the "Master", but that doesn't make any sense
  in practice.

  Changing the volume in the KDE volume slider is not "linear", between
  50%~100% it's more or less and the volume "feels" right, but below
  that, the volume goes down way faster. For example, having the volume
  at 25%, the sound is almost noticiable unless you put you ears near
  the speakers, something like this should be at 10%, but at the real
  10% you have a barely noticiable sound in the speakers when you have
  your ears directly in them.

  * Expected Results

  The general volume slider should match the Master Volume in alsa, and
  only change that slider.

  Thanks!

  ---

  Offtopic: Also i found doing testing for the kernel bug noted above,
  that changing to some alsa model in this laptop, then appears in the
  volume/audio configurator a selection of output and input what can
  overrides the headphone plug status, and i see it very useful,
  especially because if i plug a headphone without microphone i can't
  use the laptop built-in microphone and the only thing i can do is not
  use headphone. But using some models (dell-headset-multi, for example)
  i can do that, however, it brings the issue with the volume in the
  back speakers. How pulseaudio can be do this? it can be done for my
  laptop?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1942723] Re: Laptop wakes from sleep, no display

2021-09-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Bug description:
  When I close the lid on my laptop to put Kubuntu to sleep, it wakes up

  I had a prior installation of Kubuntu on this box and it did not have

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1942738] [NEW] XOrg / nouveau - hard lockups and does not draw to screen

2021-09-05 Thread JXT
Public bug reported:

Changing display settings hard locks the machine (no reisub save).
Installing nouveau-firmware allows changes to be made without hard lock
ups but the screen using nouveau draws the mouse cursor and will launch
apps on it but does not draw anything on screen. Dmesg is flooded with
nouveau and XOrg failure messages.
