2021-06-24 Thread Stefan von straten Finne
Looks like the reinstall with the system helpers did the trick. The
package now installed and seems to work as intended.

I did some cleaning and I don't have any package problems hanging around
any more. So I would think it is a solved problem now.

Thank you for the support.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1928931] Re: German strings in deja-dup.mo for en_GB

2021-06-24 Thread Iain Lane
Wait, isn't the version wrong? 1:21.10+20210415ubuntu1.

I'm going to re-upload to the queue with 1:21.04.

Also, can we just run a langpack export for impish to fix this there
please? The version is greater than hirsute's now so I can't just copy
up.

Title:
German strings in deja-dup.mo for en_GB

Status in language-pack-gnome-en package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in language-pack-gnome-en source package in Hirsute:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

Some German strings were accidentally translated under en_GB. They
affect the default Ubuntu install - some of them are strings which are
displayed as a notification some time after first logging in, so it's
quite visible. See the attached screenshot.

  [ Fix ]

Revert the German and go back to the proper English text. The way to
fix langpacks is to upload the language-pack-gnome-XX package which
  replaces files in language-pack-gnome-XX-base.

  [ Devel release ]

I'd like to propose to binary copy forward, and let the normal
langpack release schedule take care of eventually dominating these
  away in impish.

  [ QA ]

To verify the diff, compare deja-dup.po from language-pack-gnome-en-
base to the one in this upload. You'll have to do that manually.

    0. Be in en_GB.
    1. Install the SRU
    2. In an Ubuntu Desktop session, open a terminal and run `deja-dup
--prompt`.
    3. Note the buttons in the notification that shows up. They should be in
English.

[ What could go wrong ]

  1. There could be other instances of this in different packages we haven't
noticed yet
  2. If I break the .po file, it could either break the build or the
translations at runtime (but this is English, so if we fall back to C it's not
too bad)
  3. If my diff is wrong then I might have dropped some en_GB translations or
made them wrong

  https://people.canonical.com/~rbalint/zstd-debs/ contains a .deb built
on Hirsute having both data and control members of the .deb being
compressed with zstd. It can be handy for testing various tools.

  [dpkg]
Decompression support in dpkg landed first in Bionic and is being SRUd to
Xenial in LP: #1764220 enable Launchpad's Xenial systems to process the
zstd-compressed binary packages.
From dpkg's perspective the upgrade path is cleared.

The original plan was compressing only the internal data.tar .deb
member, but dpkg uses uniform compression by default since dpkg 1.19.0
thus I'm collecting all the changes to support control.tar.zst, too,

Packages where the epoch is encoded in the filename cannot be retrieved, as
we overlooked some places when changing the acquire system to always use %
encoded URLs.

  [Test plan]
A test is included in the comprehensive test suite.

  [Where problems could occur]
Regressions could occur in places that download debs with filenames that need
quoting or are already quoted. You can argue this also changes the API
slightly, since ArchiveURI() now returns encoded URLs, rather than just
appending the file path to the host. Although, this could actually improve
things too.

Phased upgrades were only applied to already installed packages, so if we had
a source package foo building foo-core and foo-extra, and foo-core=1 was
installed, and we tried to install foo-extra, it would fail because it would
try to install 0% foo-extra=2 while blocking foo-core as it's "not for us".

  [Test Plan]
The autopkgtests ensure we don't regress and they kind of check this by
checking the policy output to see that "foo-extra=2" above is also not the
candidate, but foo-extra=1 is (so installing it alongside foo-core=1 would work
fine) but they don't install it, so it might be nice to verify this too:

Find a package that is phased, but not for us (maybe just setting the
never-include-phased flag?), install one binary from it from the
release pocket, and then try to install another from the updates
  pocket.

At the moment, installing libsystemd-dev would trigger it.

  [Where problems could occur]
This is a change in behavior when installing new packages that might cause
regression in image building tools for example, if those don't use a chroot
(chroots being detected).

Apart from that risk, the change is just removing a flag check inside
an if, so not much else.

  [Original bug report]

I'm using the ubuntu-21.04-live-server-amd64 ISO to install my hirsute
desktop machines so I can automate the installation.

After installation, I'm trying to install the desktop via "apt install
  ubuntu-desktop".

  This fails with:
"Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
   ubuntu-release-upgrader-gtk : Depends: ubuntu-release-upgrader-core (=
1:21.04.11) but 1:21.04.10 is to be installed
     Depends: python3-distupgrade (= 1:21.04.11)
but 1:21.04.10 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages."

  "apt policy ubuntu-release-upgrader-core" shows:
  "ubuntu-release-upgrader-core:
    Installed: 1:21.04.10
    Candidate: 1:21.04.10

  500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hirsute/main amd64 Packages

I could not find any information what "phased 20%" means. It's
obviously a major problem not being able to install the desktop on a
  fresh installation.

Calling update() or installing packages from apt clients resets their SIGINT
and SIGQUIT handlers to SIG_DFL, overriding any signal handlers they might have
set for them.

In case of ubuntu-release-upgrader, this results in the release
upgrader being unable to handle interrupts after it did the initial
update - the default libc handler will run and the program exits.

  [Test plan]

  [[apt]]
As a standalone test for apt, we can test the following script:

  import apt
  import time

  apt.Cache().update()
  print("WAITING")
  try:
  time.sleep(1)
  except BaseException as e:
  print("Seen", repr(e))
  print("END")

Pressing Ctrl+C while WAITING is printed should print Seen
KeyboardInterrupt, and importantly, also the END line.

  [[ubuntu-release-upgrader]]
  1) On an Ubuntu 18.04 system run do-release-upgrade in a terminal.
  2) At the "Do you want to start the upgrade?" question say Y.
  3) When you see the "Lock screen disabled" message you will also see
"Inhibiting until Ctrl+C is pressed".
  4) Press "Ctrl+C"

Your /etc/apt/sources.list file will now have focal in it instead of
bionic although the upgrade has quit. With the version of ubuntu-
release-upgrader in -proposed you will not see the "Ctrl+C" message.
For your sources.list file to be restored you'll need the version of
apt from bionic-proposed installed before starting the upgrade.

  [Where problems could occur]
apt: This specific change removes the two lines that SIG_DFL the signal
handlers after running scripts. AFAWCT those lines are unnecessary - the code
that calls it temporarily sets the handlers to SIG_IGN but restores previous
handlers at the end; it was wrongly refactored decades ago. A regression could
occur in that those signals will now continue to be ignored if we missed a spot.

ubuntu-release-upgrader: The change is wrapping a bunch of code in a
try: except: block so if the indentation was off the pyflakes /
pycodestyle tests would fail but autopkgtest will catch that.

  [Original bug report]
As a long-time-user of ?ubuntu, with apt-get as tool of choice for
updates/upgrades I wrote a daily script for updates, with 'dist-upgrade'.
In all earlier years, it wouldn't actually do an upgrade of a ?ubuntu
version; just all packages including new ones. Version updates had to be
initiated manually, and I was always asked if I really wanted the new ?ubuntu
version. Sounds appropriate.

Last night when it (dist-upgrade), it just gave me 20.04. No questions asked.
I for one consider this kind of intrusive, though.
It *might* have to make with me trying 'sudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop' a
number of times earlier; just to *check* if the upgrade was on offer; but this
is only a guess.

In *any* case, a pop-up asking "Are you sure? Are you connected
through an adequate pipe? Are you sitting with full batteries; better
a power supply?" would be convenient; since I am using my PC for
urgent duties, and didn't want to fiddle with unexpected upgrade bugs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1926062] Re: [hirsute/impish] Can't turn bluetooth on again after turning it off

2021-06-24 Thread Robie Basak
> Declaring "Fix Committed" when a fix exists in an upstream tributary
before anything has reached proposed is a procedure requested by seb128
and we now follow on the desktop team.

I'm not sure what you mean by "upstream tributary", but if the fix
exists in the main Ubuntu packaging branch used by the desktop team (ie.
Vcs-Git in debian/control points to it) then that makes sense, as it was
in this case. If you mean it's just fixed upstream somewhere, then that
doesn't make sense - Launchpad's bug tracker expects to have a separate
task to track upstream status if you want that.

However, from an SRU perspective, I would expect an upload to the
development release *before* an SRU is uploaded. Sometimes we make
concessions (eg. during a development release freeze), but I don't think
a sponsorship delay qualifies. The sponsor should be able to sponsor to
the development release first, so there's no reason not to do it.

I see it's there now, but please could you adjust your processes to make
sure that in the normal case, this happens? This would save me reviewing
the SRU twice.

  3. Turn on Bluetooth via UI

Expect: Device list appears, so Bluetooth really is on.

  [Where problems could occur]

Since the fix involves the 'rfkill' logic it has the potential to
affect any Bluetooth or Wifi on/off setting.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1929657] Re: [Ubuntu 20.4.2] vLan not getting static IP assigned (on s390x)

2021-06-24 Thread Lukas Märdian
> Gave some time between netplan apply and check without success, I can leave
> it for
> hours and the IP never gets assigned

Indeed, I cannot see it being assigned an IPv4 address in your latest
"_delay" run. (Well, there is some assignment of an IP to enP53p0s0.171
at 15:05:29 in the journal logs, but that was before you started the
experiment).

> maybe what you are seeing is the manual assignment that I did with
> ip addr add 192.168.171.53/24 dev enP53p0s0.171

No I don't think so, as the timestamp of your manual "ip addr add"
command (08:13:02++) is after the systemd-networkd assignment in the
logs (08:12:38). Also, your output clearly shows that the IP was already
assigned when you tried to (re-)assign it manually (it shows the
"RTNETLINK answers: File exists" error):

> root@ilabg13:~# ip addr add 192.168.171.53/24 dev enP53p0s0.171
> RTNETLINK answers: File exists

I'm a bit worried about the /etc/systemd/network/10-enP53p0s0.link file (now
there seems to be another one "10-enP53p0s0.link" as well...) – Is this file
needed? Why was it created?
It matches on "MACAddress=82:0c:9b:c9:78:f8", which would match enP53p0s0 AND
enP53p0s0.171 at the same time (they use the same inherited MAC address),
leading to unspecified behavior, as we cannot rename two interfaces to the same
"Name=enP53p0s0".

Could you try deleting this file in /etc/systemd/network/10-enP53p0s0.link
(potentially adopting your netplan YAML config to the name assigned to this
interface by the kernel/systemd) and check if this makes any difference?
# rm /etc/systemd/network/10-enP53p0s0.link

If for some reason you cannot delete this file, try adding a "Type=!vlan" line
instead:
# cat /etc/systemd/network/10-enP53p0s0.link
[Match]
MACAddress=82:0c:9b:c9:78:f8
Type=!vlan

[Link]
Name=enP53p0s0

Does this make any difference when running "netplan apply && sleep 30 &&
networkctl status -a --no-pager"?

Bug description:
  * Impact

The Icloud service introduced changes that are confusing evolution-
data-server which means evolution is now failing to connect to the
  email server

  * Test case

Set up an iCloud account and try to use it for emails in evolution

  * Regression potential

The change is in the imapx connection code, it could create problems
with other type of servers so we should try to test on different
  providers.

The bug has been fixed yesterday by Evolution's developer:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/1468

However, the package in Ubuntu (at least in Focal Fosa) still needs to
  be updated.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1933506] [NEW] ubuntu 20.04 no show cursor in 1 of 3 monitors

2021-06-24 Thread alexandro cruz
Public bug reported:

Install Ubuntu 20.04, I have 3 monitors but I can not make the mouse
work on the monitor 1, stays stuck on the center monitor and does not
pass the cursor.

If I use the option on the title bar and press "Move to the screen on
the left this works without problem" However, it could not access the
window that I sent to that screen.

That is to say everything works but the mouse does not pass, and
attempting by removing the stickers with "Retouch Editor" but it does
not work, also try changing the dock and monitor but the problem with
the monitor 1 persists.

On/off of Bluetooth in gnome-control-center will not work properly in kernels
5.11 (approximately) onward. Devices are not refreshed in the list anymore.

  [Test Plan]

  1. Open gnome-control-center and select Bluetooth

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1931725] Re: initramfs-tools & kernel: use zstd as the default compression method

2021-06-24 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
decompression speed only needs to be faster than i/o speed, once that is
reached the best compression ratio results in the fastest bootspped.

for kernel image zstd is used with -22 --ultra, thus I can compare it
with zlib -9.

Title:
initramfs-tools & kernel: use zstd as the default compression method

Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems:
  New
Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Turns out that loading is always the slow part in loading initramfs
into memory and decompressing it since decompression is always the
final 10-20% or so of the task. It therefore makes sense to use a
good compressor that shrinks the initramfs as much as possible with
  little decompression overhead.

Benchmarking zstd vs lz4 shows that while zstd can be ~5x slower in
decompression, the image size is much smaller with zstd than lz4, and
since ~80-90% of the boot time is loading the image it makes sense to
  use zstd.

Attached is a libreoffice spread sheet showing typical load and
decompression times for a fairly standard 3.4 GHZ intel box with data
for load times for a 5400 RPM, 7200 RPM and SATA SSD drives.

The conclusions from the test results (attached) show:

  1. Loading time is always significantly slower than decompression time.
  2. ZSTD is 5x slower than LZ4 in decompression speed but produces far
  better compressed images
  3. Given that loading time is the major factor in loading +
decompression, ZSTD is best for kernel and initramfs boot timings.

  (Also refer to https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~cking/boot-speed-eoan-5.3
/kernel-compression-method.txt for some raw data on drive load speeds
for the same UEFI box I did a couple of years ago).

amd64 supports zstd, but s390x does not. Will use this bug to enable
  zstd support on s390x.

gzip/libgzip fails for systemd services using
  MemoryDenyWriteExecute=yes

  [test case]

note this only fails on ppc64el for this test case

can be reproduced with systemd localed-locale e.g.:
  https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-team/systemd/-/merge_requests/116#note_245685

  install upstream systemd from ppa:
  https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-support-team/+archive/ubuntu/systemd

  get the upstream autopkgtests:

https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-team/systemd/-/tree/debian/master/debian/tests

  run the 'localed-locale' test

  [regression potential]

as this sets NO_ASM any regression would likely involve changed
  performance or architecture-specific failures

  [scope]

this is needed only in b

this was fixed in debian at version 1.9-2.1, so this is fixed already
  in f and later

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1933531] [NEW] mv command deleted source file without moving to destination

2021-06-24 Thread Tom Arons
Public bug reported:

I mv'd a file to a directory where I had group write permissions, but a
file existed owned by another user. I was asked if I wanted to override
the permissions. I said "y". The ownership was changed on the
destination file to me, but the mod time and contents of the file were
not changed and the source file was deleted. I tried to duplicate the
behavior, but it worked as it should with a test file.

toma@admn1:~$ ls -ld /opt/scripts
drwxrwxr-- 3 ansible ansible 4096 Jun 24 16:25 /opt/scripts
toma@admn1:~$ mv GeneratePortList.pl /opt/scripts/
mv: replace '/opt/scripts/GeneratePortList.pl', overriding mode 0755
(rwxr-xr-x)? y
toma@admn1:~$ ls -l /opt/scripts/GeneratePortList.pl
-rwxr-xr-x 1 toma domain users 2855 Jul 16 2018
/opt/scripts/GeneratePortList.pl

I have mv aliased to mv -i so I can confirm that the existing
destination file was not owned by me since I was not prompted to
overwrite the file.

Both source and destination are in the same file system. I cannot find
the source file anywhere.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1929560] Re: link mac isn't set if already up

2021-06-24 Thread Jan Graichen
This backport to 18.04 LTS broke all our OpenStack compute nodes. We use
systemd-network to configure interfaces etc. and neutron-linuxbridge-
agent with some flat networks. In this scenario, the neutron agent
creates bridges for the flat networks and assigns them to physical
interfaces based on a mapping.

The backport now sets nomaster on these interfaces, effectively removing
the bridges and cutting of connectivity of all VMs using these flat
networks. This happened already when the systemd package was upgraded
(and systemd-networkd restarted).

Example:

```
10: flat-net1@data:  mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue
master brq88363244-5f state UP group default qlen 1000
link/ether b0:22:28:1c:f7:12 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
```

The interface (VLAN here) is created and managed by systemd-networkd,
the bridge `brq88363244-5f` is managed by neutron. Of course, systemd-
networkd doesn't know anything about the bridge, this wasn't a problem
until now, but the latest patch update always sets nomaster to `flat-
net1`. We were really surprise by this change in 18.04 LTS.

Is there any recommend workaround to have systemd-networkd not set
nomaster or do we have to not use systemd-network at all?

  [regression potential]

any regression would likely result in incorrectly set link mac and/or
master, or failure to correctly set mac and/or master

  [scope]

this is needed for g and earlier

this is fixed upstream by commit
e16e4b3bedc57919b3ecb4096e941709a5d39b8a which is included in v247 so
this is fixed already in h and later

  [other info]

this moves the configuration of the link mac and master out of the
link_up() function, so this also allows repeated calls to link_up()
without reconfiguring the link mac and master. That behavior is useful
for the commits for bug 1664844

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1933537] [NEW] add-apt-repository should store PGP keys in /usr/share/keyrings because /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d is deprecated for third party repos

2021-06-24 Thread m.eik michalke
Public bug reported:

PPAs are third party repositories. for security reasons, PGP keys for
these must not be placed in /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d, according to this
document:

  https://wiki.debian.org/DebianRepository/UseThirdParty

they should instead be saved to /usr/share/keyrings and the generated
.list file for the repo added should refer to its particular key by
using a [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/...] argument. this ensures that
the downloaded PGP key will only be used to verify a particular
repository and is not globally available to verify package lists of all
configured repositories (as are all keys found in
/etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d).

please fix add-apt-repository accordingly.

  [regression potential]

any regression would likely result in incorrectly set link mac and/or
master, or failure to correctly set mac and/or master

  [scope]

this is needed for g and earlier

this is fixed upstream by commit
e16e4b3bedc57919b3ecb4096e941709a5d39b8a which is included in v247 so
this is fixed already in h and later

  [other info]

this moves the configuration of the link mac and master out of the
link_up() function, so this also allows repeated calls to link_up()
without reconfiguring the link mac and master. That behavior is useful
for the commits for bug 1664844

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1933361] Re: Audio Problem, soundcard not detected

2021-06-24 Thread Víctor
Why do I need to install nothing when an Ubuntu Update is installed?

It has no sense. The Ubuntu Update must have all the things that the
update need.

I have installed this:

sudo apt install linux-generic
and this:
sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-20.04

but it doesn't work.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1931725] Re: initramfs-tools & kernel: use zstd as the default compression method

2021-06-24 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
@cborntra

v5.13 ubuntu kernel's s390 configuration with zstd -22 --ultra
compression is 8.5 MB, whereas gzip -9 is 11M.

Thus for gzip to win at bootspeed the decompression speed has to
compensate for 2.5M of i/o and be faster than zstd.

Unaccelerated decompression comparison still gives me faster
decompression with less i/o with zstd compressed kernel image.

At Canonical we still do not have z15 mainframe available for us to
benchmark this.

Title:
initramfs-tools & kernel: use zstd as the default compression method

2021-06-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package bluez - 5.59-0ubuntu1

---
bluez (5.59-0ubuntu1) impish; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release 5.59 (LP: #1933078):
- Fix issue with string to UUID-32 conversion.

- Fix issue with accepting invalid AVDTP capabilities.
- Fix issue with unregister handling of AVRCP player.
  * Add new build-dep 'python3-docutils' required for rst2man.
  * Add new package 'bluez-meshd' and --enable-mesh (LP: #1929833).
- Requires new build-dep 'libjson-c-dev'.

Title:
  avinfo is missing

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The "avinfo" command line tools available in bluez/tools
  (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/bluetooth/bluez.git/tree/tools) is not
  available in the package.

  The package bluez-tools (https://packages.ubuntu.com/groovy/bluez-
tools) seems to map another project external to bluez
(https://github.com/khvzak/bluez-tools) and not the "tools" folder of
  bluez.

"avinfo" is used for example in order to check which codecs are
supported by a headphone set (see https://github.com/EHfive
  /pulseaudio-modules-bt/issues/31#issuecomment-462717049).

Maybe have "bluez-tools" map the "tools" folder of bluez, and move the
  other project to another package?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1933452] Re: secondary portrait monitor is not portrait during boot

2021-06-24 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This is somewhat related to bug 1873164. In both cases they are
landscape displays that just don't yet know which way is up.

Since we don't have access to the user monitor config (or know which
user) during boot, it's not possible to find out that way. It is however
sometimes possible to read from the monitor over i2s bus which way it is
rotated. I've never seen that implemented in real software though.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => plymouth (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- secondary portrait monitor is not portrait during boot
+ Portrait monitor is not portrait during boot
