[Touch-packages] [Bug 1357093] Re: Kernels not autoremoving, causing out of space error on LVM or Encrypted installation or on any installation, when /boot partition gets full

2017-08-05 Thread Jarno Suni
Hi David

One option is to install 16.04 or later and configure unattended-
upgrades as recommended in the document. I am afraid all the related
bugs will not be fixed in 14.04.

Fixing Bug #1460396 and Bug #291342 would also help users of Software
Updater even if unattended-upgrades is not used.

The changes you suggest have nothing to do with unattended-upgrade
(against which this bug is reported).

IIRC the default separate /boot size is 500MB in some newer release of
Ubuntu.

  While you and I might know that we need to watch partition space, many

As for default settings for unattended-upgrade, it is interesting what
Canonical Foundations Team is going to do with Bug #1624644.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1449001] Re: systemd-resolved: please do not use Google public DNS by default

2017-08-05 Thread Andre
Just upgraded to 17.04 from 16.04 and found DNS resolution stopped
randomly working.

As it turns out systemd-resolved decided for some obscure reason to
switch to google DNS which it can't reach compared to the locally
provided recursive resolver which continues to work just fine.

In summary in my case it isn't just a privacy concern but actually
breaks DNS resolution.

Aug 05 11:29:07 dtank0 systemd-resolved[8051]: Switching to system DNS server
10.124.196.1.
Aug 05 11:29:07 dtank0 systemd[1]: Started Network Name Resolution.
Aug 05 11:33:58 dtank0 systemd-resolved[8051]: Switching to fallback DNS server
8.8.8.8.

After the switch to 8.8.8.8 DNS resolution on the host stopped working
because 8.8.8.8 is not reachable from the host.

Interestingly stopping and disabling systemd-resolved followed by an
"resolvconf -u" did not revert the config back to a working configuration.
It required removing /run/resolvconf/interface/systemd-resolved by hand
(starting systemd-resolved will add that file but not remove on stop).

Bug description:
  systemd-resolved will fall back to Google public DNS (8.8.8.8, etc.)
  in the absence of other configured DNS servers.

  systemd-resolved is not enabled by default in Ubuntu 15.04, but it is
  installed by default and will behave in this way if enabled by the
  user.

  $ cat /etc/systemd/resolved.conf
  (...)
  # Entries in this file show the compile time defaults.
  (...)
  #FallbackDNS=8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 2001:4860:4860:: 2001:4860:4860::8844

  This raises privacy concerns since in the event of accidental
  misconfiguration DNS queries will be sent unencrypted across the
  internet, and potentially also security concerns given systemd-
  resolved does not perform DNSSEC validation and is not particularly
  well hardened against malicious responses e.g. from a MITM
  (http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/11/12/5).

  I believe that it would be better to fail safe if no DNS server is
  configured -- i.e. have DNS lookups fail; it's better that the user is
  aware of their misconfiguration, rather than silently sending their
  queries to Google. The user can intentionally opt to use Google
  public DNS if they wish.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Remove existing DNS configuration (from /etc/network/interfaces,
/etc/resolv.conf, /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/*)
  2. Reboot, or otherwise clear relevant state
  3. sudo service systemd-resolved start
  4. Note that Google's servers are listed in /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf
  5. If systemd-resolved is enabled in /etc/nsswitch.conf (it isn't by
default), observe that DNS lookups probably still work, and queries are being
sent to one of Google's servers

  Possible workaround/bugfix: ship a resolved.conf which clears the FallbackDNS
parameter.

  This issue has been discussed in the Debian BTS
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761658).  My interpretation
of the Debian package maintainer's position is that a user concerned with the
privacy implications shouldn't let systemd get into a state where it uses the
fallback DNS servers (quoting Marco d'Itri: "Short summary: have a resolv.conf
file or use DHCP"). I would argue that it's safest not to have fallback DNS
servers configured at all by default.

2017-08-05 Thread Sandra Viktoria Mueller
I run the dpkg -l | awk '/^iH/ { print $2 }' command. He doesn't give me
any result.
But the problem remains. The update for the operating system stops at the
half way.

And I've got another update for software 3.20.5 which not even starts. Any
idea what I could try?

Thank you

Sandra

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1642966] Re: package cups-daemon 2.1.3-4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2017-08-05 Thread Iiro Laiho
@slashd, Maybe something has changed in systemd or something? I'll check
it out sometime when I have time.

Did you make a clean install? How did you ensure that the job was stuck
in the queue? I remember that adding a socket:// printer with an invalid
address did the trick.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1598759] Re: AppArmor nameservice abstraction doesn't allow communication with systemd-resolved

2017-08-05 Thread intrigeri
FWIW current Ubuntu citrain branch seems to apply exactly the same patch
twice for some reason:

debian/patches/adjust-nameservice-for-systemd-resolved.patch
debian/patches/profiles-grant-access-to-systemd-resolved.patch

Not sure what's going on, but anyway we don't apply this patch in Debian
so this only affects the Ubuntu-specific bits of the packaging.

Title:
  AppArmor nameservice abstraction doesn't allow communication with
  systemd-resolved

Status in AppArmor:

Status in apparmor package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ntp package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in apparmor source package in Yakkety:
  Fix Released
Status in ntp source package in Yakkety:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  Processes confined by AppArmor profiles making use of the nameservice
  AppArmor abstraction are unable to access the systemd-resolved network
  name resolution service. The nsswitch.conf file shipped in Yakkety
  puts the nss-resolve plugin to use which talks to systemd-resolved
  over D-Bus. The D-Bus communication is blocked for the confined
  processes described above and those processes will fallback to the
  traditional means of name resolution.

  [ Test Case ]

  * Use ntpd to test:
$ sudo apt-get install -y ntp
...
$ sudo systemctl stop ntp

# in another terminal, watch for AppArmor denials
$ dmesg -w

# in the original terminal, start ntp
$ sudo systemctl start ntp

# You'll see a number of denials on the system_bus_socket file:
audit: type=1400 audit(1476240762.854:35): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="connect" profile="/usr/sbin/ntpd" name="/run/dbus/system_bus_socket"
pid=3867 comm="ntpd" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=126 ouid=0

   * Use tcpdump to test:

 # Capture traffic on whichever network interface you're currently using
 $ sudo tcpdump -i eth0

 # Look in /var/log/syslog for denials on the system_bus_socket file:
 audit: type=1400 audit(1476240896.021:40): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="connect" profile="/usr/sbin/tcpdump"
name="/run/dbus/system_bus_socket" pid=4106 comm="tcpdump" requested_mask="wr"
denied_mask="wr" fsuid=0 ouid=0

  In both situations, ntpd and tcpdump will seemingly work as expected
  due to the name resolution fallback configured in nsswitch.conf.
  However, neither confined process will be using systemd-resolved for
  name resolution.

  [ Regression Potential ]

  This fix will allow ntp, tcpdump, cupsd, dhclient, and other confined-
  by-default programs to start using systemd-resolved. There is some
  potential for regression since those applications have not been
  previously using systemd-resolved.

  [ Original bug description ]

  On this plain install of Xenial apparmor complains about ntpd:

  [   19.379152] audit: type=1400 audit(1467623330.386:27): apparmor="DENIED"

pid=4513 comm="ntpd" requested_mask="wr" denied_mask="wr" fsuid=121 ouid=0

  Adding the following line to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.ntpd fixes the
  problem:

  #include

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1668639] Re: Add a trigger to reload rsyslog when a new configuration file is dropped in /etc/rsyslog.d

2017-08-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package rsyslog - 8.16.0-1ubuntu7

---
rsyslog (8.16.0-1ubuntu7) artful; urgency=medium

  * Cherry pick restart on configuration changes fix from Debian (LP: #1668639)
- Trigger restart on configuration changes.
  Register a dpkg trigger on /etc/rsyslog.d that calls restart on
  configuration changes. (Closes: #791337)
- Update dpkg trigger to use try-restart.
  Add try-restart action to SysV initscript for that, systemd supports
  this natively.
- debian/control: Add Depends on init-system-helpers (>= 1.47~) to rsyslog.

  works out of the box.

  [Regression Potential]
  Minimal.

  This patch merges a patch from Debian where a trigger is added to the
  rsyslog package that fires when other debs drop files into
  /etc/rsyslog.d.

  [Original Bug Description]
  rsyslog should reload its configuration when other packages drop
configuration in /etc/rsyslog.d

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1696206] Re: systemd drops lists concatenated with EOF

2017-08-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker

Title:
  systemd drops lists concatenated with EOF

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Disclaimer: I originally posted this on Gallium OS's bug tracker but was told
that Gallium pulls directly from upstream Ubuntu. The original bug report can
be found here:
  https://github.com/GalliumOS/galliumos-distro/issues/369

  Release: Gallium OS
  Package: systemd

  When a systemd target file contains a "Conflicts" list at the end of
  the file and does not provide a blank line between the end of the list
  and the end of the file the list is silently dropped.

  This is easier to demonstrate than it is to explain.

  Take the following files:

  `ServiceA.service`, `ServiceB.service`, and `ServiceC.service` are identical:
  ```
  [Unit]
  Description=This service just remains on
  [Service]
  Restart=always
  ExecStart=/home/keeton/Permanent/Scripts/StayRunning.sh
  ```

  `StayRunning.sh` is:
  ```
  #!/bin/sh
  while true
do
sleep 3
  done
  ```
  The three services launch a script that keeps on running indefinitely.

  This target, `WillTurnOff.target`, will stop all three services as we would
expect:
  ```
  [Unit]
  Description=This target will turn off Service's A, B, and C
  Conflicts= \
  ServiceA.service \
  ServiceB.service \
  ServiceC.service \
  ```

  This target, `WillNotTurnOff.target`, will **not** stop the stop the services:
  ```
  [Unit]
  Description=This target will *not* turn off Service's A, B, and C
  Conflicts= \
  ServiceA.service \
  ServiceB.service \
  ServiceC.service \
  ```

  Notice the difference. `WillTurnOff.target` contains a blank line
  between the last item on the list and the end of the file.

  Several things to note:
  * I'm pretty sure that this is a bug in systemd, but Gallium's on systemd
version 229, which is more than two versions behind the latest version.
  * I'm guessing that systemd is concatenating the EOF onto the list since the
list ends with a backslash.
  * Shouldn't systemd at least spit out a warning that something is wrong?

Bug description:
  CUPS USB probing malforms Epson TM-T70 (vendorid: 0x04b8 productid:
  0x0202) which is used outside CUPS (via usblp driver).

  No matter whether the printer is set up as a CUPS raw printer or it's
  not used via CUPS (but rather via a device node under usblp control)
  the formatting is broken on the printed out labels: the orientation is
  different from what had been set, the fonts differ.

  After blacklisting the printer in the quirks file all the problems
  were gone.

  My assumption is that this printer should be blacklisted by default.
