[techtalk] Re: Consulting (Kath)

2001-02-01 Thread rottie

Hi, i'm from belgium so i'm not really sure if the same applies for the
US.
Asking a letter as a reference about your work is obvious.. Even if you
don't keep up maintaining the site I would still ask for one. After all,
you did the work (and were never payed), and you did it good (I hope
:) )..

>From your letter i have the feeling that you feel responsible for the site
and would like to keep on working on it. However, once you will find a job
freetime will become an issue. It's only natural that they should
compensate you for sacrifising your freetime for doing the
site-maintenance. Deadlines are deadlines, and the users don't care of
their webadmin has a second (real) job, they just want the site up and
running. Even when you're dead tired after a very hard day..

I do agree with Mary, check out other consultants and ask their rates for
website maintenance.. Take half of what they ask (half because schools like
things cheap and because those consultants have more
experience then you) and point out to your school that 1. you allready
know the work 2. don't need to be trained 3. are motivated and 4. that you
are simply the best deal they could get.

And ask for an hourly fee, no fixed amounts..
With a fixed amount they'll ask you a million small things that
take heaps of times and you wont get payed more.. They might decide the
site needs a workover and you still wont get payed for your extra time.
With a hourly fee they'll think twice before wasting your time on small
changes that are really not important. And if a site needs a workover,
well, you'll be compensated for the extra time.

I apologize for any spelling errors, english is not my motherlanguage.

[techtalk] Re: disappearing mouse

2001-02-03 Thread rottie

Hi,

This is not really an elegant solution but why don't you take a backup of
your XF86Config file and then run sax to configure your mouse. It will
create a new config file and you can compare the settings it uses with
your old config file.
I'm not really fond of sax (always seems to screw up my configuration of
the video) but in this case it could point you in the right direction..

Also, do you have a ps/2 or serial mouse and which type is it?
And what line have you got in XF86Config concerning this mouse?
If you quote it, maybe we can see what's wrong..

One last remark, in my system the XF86Config file (and its backups) is
located in /etc, which seems the only logical location to me.. I don't
know about RedHat though, it does not always follow standards..

Thx..
Liese..

[techtalk] Re: tcl/tk problems

2001-02-25 Thread rottie

Hi,

/usr/lib/tcl8.3, isn't that a directory?
If it is, check out if ./configure has a --with-tcl-lib option (or
something similar).. "./configure --help" will show you..

it it exists try :
./configure --with-tcl-lib=/usr/lib/tcl8.3

Maybe xcdroast will accept the newer version..

If it doesn't work... installing tcl80 might help.. :-)

Byebye..

[techtalk] Linux - Windows System

2001-02-27 Thread rottie

Hi,

I've been using linux for 1.5 years now and it has completely replaced my
windows desktop.. but..
after 1.5 years i'm really anxious to play Baldors Gate again (and
discworld noir, and heroes of m&m, ...)
and since I'm doing a major upgrade (P200MMX->AMD A-900) anyway I'm
thinking of installing W2K as well..

So my question is what's the best tactic ?

- with dual boot (on a second HD) but i don't like rebooting a lot
- use vmwarez (wont this be too slow for games?)
- use wine (is that suitable for gaming purposes? or also too slow?)
Using a second pc is silly becoz i only need windows for gaming purposes.

Second question : Has anybody got experience with the Guillemot/Hercules
Cougar Video Edition card? This is a 2D/3D video card which also includes
a s/video IN to watch tv on the pc.. I know that the video part is
supported on linux but i was wondering about the tv input part..

Thanks,
Liese..

[techtalk] Re: modem/ppp problem

2001-03-03 Thread rottie

Hi,

I don't have much experience with dailup connections but anyway..
Some questions :

When you ping those "slow" sites, do you get a reply?
(at a console you type "ping www.google.com")
I think that the 2bytes/sec rate just means that the connection is
lost.

Secondly, the remote host you talk about, is that on your local network or
on the internet?

Thirdly, isn't there a tool for verifying the installation and installed
packages in RH? If you think that the problem began by the installation
procedure which crashed it might help isolation the faulty package,
downloading it from the internet and reinstalling it.
If there isn't you can always use the rpm command at the console.

I'm sorry this isn't much of an answer but maybe it can help you isolate
the problem..

Grtz..
Liese..
