[techtalk] Delurk/Getting started

2001-05-22 Thread Ruhiel

Hullo. :)
Err.. i'm always terrible at delurking anywhere, and even worse at
asking questions (years on alt.gothic, where the newbies are served
with ketchup), but here goes... I'm *trying* to learn Linux. It ain't
easy, since I don't have it installed anywhere yet, but the books are
helping. At the moment, i'm downloading an ISO of SUsE 7.1, which
seemed to be one of the better distro's for newbies. (Discuss?)

I'm seriously contemplating partitioning off 2-3 gig of my current
windows machine (HP 6545c, Celeron 500, 20gb HD and 191mb) and running
it from there. I know that I have to make a Linux partition, not a
FAT32. Here's where I get confused... After I burn the ISO's onto CD,
will it boot from the CD, or do I have to use my old windows boot
disk? If I have to use the boot disk.. err.. i'll be lost. If I can
boot from CD, will the installer see that there is already a Linux
partition and start the install there? I'm really worried about
something on the windows side getting lost. It's all backed up, but it
would be a PITA to redo it all.

What are the chances if something totally not being compatible? I know
there there are issues with WinModems, and that's not an issue, since
i'm on cable- I don't use the modem, BUT I have a combo card, and the
sound might not work, right? From what I understand,
SUsE has a pretty good installer, and pretty good hardware detection,
but i'm not sure about my POS HP being anywhere near Linux-friendly.
Not to mention my cable modem.. i'm not even going to attempt to get
THAT going until i'm better at this. I've heard scary things.

Am I getting in over my head? I have a Linux guru friend that can help
me, but it's finding the time for him to come over that's the problem.
This man lives for install parties :)

That said, i'm a Linux geek at heart, but my brain isn't convinced. I
love listening to people talking about it, and i'm trying SO hard to
absorb everything I read. But i'm still unsteady.

I do have PM.
But I will read all the fips anyway.

The download only finished a while ago, and I haven't looked at the
files yet. Thank you for pointing them out. I may have missed them.

That one wouldn't have caught me either. Sometimes I can be amazingly
dim.

Then i'll let the installer do it. Good.

You can count on that. I'll probably be spending several hours reading
and rereading everything prompted ;)

Gotcha. I had read about the swap partition, but wasn't sure how to go
about making them. I'm glad the installer will do it :)

I had read that you should make it 1.5 times the size of your ram, but
there was some discussion as to whether that was accurate. I'll do
300mb anyway.

I'm subbing to the lists :) Thank you :) I've been reading the
newsgroup for a short time, and i'm becoming familiar with some of the
things they're discussing. Slowly.

Thank you again for the info :) We actually have bits and pieces for a
linux box, but I think i'd rather run it from this machine. It saves
desk space. :) I did find a handy page:
http://enterprise.powerup.com.au/~squadron/

The one page linux manual :) It has some good little reference notes.
And through that i'm figuring out what the different abbreviations
are. If I can figure out all those, i'll be in good shape :)

[techtalk] Here we go

2001-05-23 Thread Ruhiel

I'm defragging now, and using the laptop for web connection.

I have the burned SuSE cd.. I know it works because my neighbor just
installed from it ;)

I'm going to use the built in partitioner. I'm giving Linux 3gb with a 300mb
swap. (Then i'll still have over 6 free.)

I'm going to use the Boot Magic that's already installed to control the boot
ups.

And I have the Linux install guide from Linux.com pulled up and ready to
go...

The last thing i'll need to do is install ximian. BUT I don't know how to
since I won't be hooked up to the internet... can I somehow download it in
wondows and pull it up from Linux?
Forgive my silly questions. I know it involves mounting something, but
beyond that i'm clueless.

It didn't ask anything on the install... so I dont know if windows is even
still there :)
I have a plethora of questions...
I got an Invalid Module name error installing my sound card. What's this and
how do I learn to fix it?
My display is all wonky, and the clock is wrong.. I just fixed the clock,
but it's currently stuck saying "loading" in the little window... i'll just
hope it wakes up.
I actually think my modem may work.. it's a networked modem, and it saw the
nic card ok, so I might not have to do anything else. I hope.
This install went wy too smoothly. I booted from CD and the YAST just
did it's thing. It asked me a few questions, and asked me to configure
everything (which I didn't do yet) and that was it.
ARGH WHERE DO I FIX MY DISPLAY?!? grr. I can't find it, and it's giving me a
headache being off center. I'm running in KDE until I get ximian installed.

Ruhiel, will ask more later :)

[techtalk] It's all done... kind of

2001-05-23 Thread Ruhiel

Well, I got it installed. I'm thinking i'll have to do it again though,
since it's saying that I have a Live Eval, and some things don't look like
they're there. I have no idea. I wasn't able to get the sound going, since
apparent;y there isn't a linux driver for a Riptide Combo card. I checked
OSSFree, but they're not there anymore? :sigh: BUT i've been having much
fun playing. I can't FIND anything, but it's fun exploring. I can't get
Ximian, since they don't support SuSe 7.1 yet, only 7.0
I can't get my CD rom open.
I don't know if the burner works.
KDE is confusing.
Nobody is talking in #linuxchix.
That is all :)

[techtalk] Well, it doesn't matter anyway

2001-05-24 Thread Ruhiel

Thank you for all the advice that was sent...

But it doesn't matter ;)
Because i'm dumb, you see. The ISO that I burned was a live eval. I
can't install it anyway. But it ran off the CD and let me play for a
few hours. I'm just glad that I didn't really do anything in-depth,
because I would have been really pissed when it was for nothing ;)
So i'll have a *real* boxed version some time next week, then we can
start the whole mess over. I'm saving the emails ;)

Well, I got it right eventually :) I got the full version day before
yesterday, and installed it without a hitch (kind of). The only parts
that won't work is the sound (WinModem combo card- not supported),
printer because I haven't set it up, and the CD burner which I
understand can be a PITA. But it's on, it's running (right now,
actually) and i'm learning all the bits and bobs that make up the
system. GNOME & KDE make that easier. I found a couple of websites
that have basic command tutorials. I can't get any more books right
now, and the ones I have are limited. But i'm getting there. And BTW,
I had no problems with the display this time :)
