Re: [techtalk] pppd problems, redhat 6.0
I missed the first thread of this problem so I apologize if I repeat something already covered. You may want to try turning the debuging output on for the dial up process by editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 and changing the line: 'DEBUG=' to 'DEBUG=yes' Then when you bring up the interface you can run a 'tail -f /var/log/messages' to see what process chat, pppd, etc and why... sara korhonen wrote: > > Um, we got the last bit figured out.. however, we still can't get it to > > connect: the modem initialization strings never receive an OK. THe annex server that UNC has prompts for username and password. THen it gives the prompt UNC-CS-> at which you can type telnet, rlogin, ?, ppp, hangup, or a few other options. Under minicom, it gets to the cs-> prompt, so I type ppp, and it says "switching to ppp" then prints a long string of $*^&*@-type stuff. When I use another dialer, it prints half a line of the stuff, then switches. Minicom does that until it times out. A friend of ours who has experience might be coming over to help me iron out the bugs in both pppd and ip masquerading. (I got the local bit set up just fine. The other computer on the network can't get out f the LAN. Well, he can telnet into my machine and telnet out from there, but that isn't quite the point of IP masquerading...) Haa, after there starts to come this crap, quite minicom, alt-q or esc-q and (if pppd isn't set up to be suid, you must be root) say in a shell on your computer: '/sbin/pppd /dev/modem defaultroute' and wait for like ten seconds. That should make the connection. sara [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org

Just to make sure.. you do have the line 'CS->' 'ppp' after the username / password info in your chat-ppp0 script correct? > > THe annex server that UNC has prompts for username and password. [techtalk] kmail issue...can't send ..ARG!
Hi all-- My question first, and then some extraneous stuff.. I'm running kmail 1.0.20 and one day (a coupla months ago) I noticed this problem...it suddenly started not sending mail. It *looks* like the mail is being sent..copy going into setmail directory, etc. but it really never goes anywhere. I was trying to figure out how to get exmh going (masquerading my ISP) but that wasn't getting anywhere...but I believe i have changed everything back to the way it was (after discovering this kmail issue) and still kmail is not working properly. I'd really *rather* get exmh working properly, as I think there are ton more nifty things with that client..but i'd settle to get this kmail issue resolved in the shortrun. Any inputs and suggestions appreciated greatly! As far as extraneous stuff goes...I just want to mention that I am new to the list, and after reading through all the techtalk archives, I know that I have found where I belong... over and out kristin [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org

I am looking for a new modem to use with Red Hat Linux 6.0. I have 3 modems and I can only get my old 2400 modem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could buy that is currently on the market? Thank you, Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org
Re: [techtalk] Date: Sun, 7 Nov 1999 13:19:57 -0500
Chris-- I'd suggest an external one (unless you've got no room) because the lights on an external can do all sorts of groovy things for you... I personally have an internal, because the last thing I need is to have another external device attached to my computer! I remember having a modem discussion a few years ago (95?) before I ever bought my first computer, and I was told that Hayes was the way to go...I am not sure if this information is still current/relevant. I'm running on a USR, just because I got a great deal on it, and couldn't pass it up. I don't know if anything I've told you is helpful or not..I am sure that there is probably very decent support for most larger name brand modems you're are going to find, but I am not savvy enough to know which ones have the best support, and what is known to have frequent problems, etc. Kristin > > I am looking for a new modem to use with Red Hat Linux 6.0. there's a school of thought that says external is the way to go...if so, make sure you have a decent serial port if you want any sort of speed (details on request, or someone else should have them..I just woke up, it's too early to remember numbers :P ) personally, I find internal, ISA non-pnp modems work just fine. Jumpers are good things. My current modem is a USR 56k, but the computer store I used to work at sold generic jumper-set ISAs for around $50 that worked just as well (I paid nearly $120 for this modem..I'm not sure it was worth *that* much :) ) the important part is to avoid PNP and to avoid winmodems like the plaugue they are. I use a 3Com/US Robotics 56K Sportster external, and it works brilliantly. Take care, Caity [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linuxchix.org

I love my 3com ISA modem cards. Just configure the com settings correctly and add a /dev/modem symlink if necessary and you should be good to go. Chris, you'll find it difficult to find an internal modem that's not a winmodem these days. It seems that distributers are going for cheap, rather than quality (especially on integrated motherboards). I tried unsuccessfully to find an internal modem that wasn't a winmodem - however, this is in Australia - perhaps there are more available in America or other countries. I bought (in the end) an Acer 56k modem - as far as I can tell, it's been very nice to me :) Good luck, - Catie -- Today we will study trees. First, find your tree. Give your tree a hug.
