[techtalk] VGA/PGA video and monitor?

1999-11-03 Thread Cathy James
Title: VGA/PGA video and monitor?

I've finally obtained all of the pieces I
need to build my new system.  Hooray!

One anomaly did come up while shopping for
a new video cable. (The old one is flaky.)
There were no video cables with a standard
VGA adapter on one end (for the video card)
and a male DB9 on the other end (for my
Nanao F550i multisync monitor).  They
did have a cable with DB9's on both ends,
one male and one female, and they had
what they called a "VGA to PGA converter",
which appears to convert VGA to a DB9
(albeit the wrong gender).

So, what is PGA?  Is my monitor
a PGA monitor?  Should I get a gender
changer in addition to these cables?

I *think* I also have RGB connectors
on the back of the monitor, so the other
option would be a VGA to RGB cable, which
they also had (for the steep price of
$32).  Should I return these cables and
go that route instead?

I don't understand why there is
so much confusion about video cables!

[techtalk] TurboLinux Workstation Lite 4.0 install problems

1999-11-03 Thread Emily Cartier

I have a nice little TurboLinux 4.0 CD, so I'm attempting to put it on
my machine. I'm using a floppy with the boot image and the extra
hardware floppy, as my machine refuses to boot from CD-ROM.

My system is a Cyrix-233 with 64 MB of RAM, a 1 gig hard drive, a
Hitachi CDR-7730 CD-ROM drive, a Soundblaster 16 PnP, and an S3 Virge DX
chipset video card. Motherboard is unknown, but if it seems necessary,
I'll dig out its information.

The install program regularly hangs in several places and under several
conditions. TurboLinux calls its kernal image "install" rather than the
more usual "linux", thus the following examples.
1. I fail to use "install hdc=cdrom", and the install hangs upon the
first attempt to read from the CD. The error message here varies, but
the gist is that it failed to read a header, and spits a header number
at me.
2. I use "install hdc=cdrom", and the install hangs when it tries to set
up packages with the following message "An error occured during the
'Install Packages' step of the install".
3. I use "install hdc=cdrom", and the install hangs after I've selected
the packages I want because it can't read the source tree from the
CD=ROM.

The CD-ROM is dust free, but appears to have a few areas of visible
pitting. It does not appear to be scratched. Other Linux distributions
(notably Mandrake 6.0) have similar install problems.

If you guys can't come up with anything, I may be able to get help via a
local users group. There are other CD-ROM drives availible if you think
swapping CD-ROMs might help.

[techtalk] More on the TurboLinux troubles

1999-11-03 Thread Emily Cartier

Here's some nice hard data on the other big error.

If the install manages to get to the point where you select the type of
system and the packages you want, a nice little error comes up. Error
cannot unpack base system archive. If I head over to the virtual console
with the error log, it indicates that there's a
/tmp/tlinux/TurboLinux/base/skeleton.cgz that is apparently the source
of the problem. When I booted up with a dos disk and took a look, the
file is present, and isn't empty.

Re: [techtalk] Gimp...

1999-11-03 Thread J B

I am running GIMP/Win on a Windows 2000 box. Runs great. The only problem I
have found is that if I try to manipulate more than one graphic, whether
concurrently or not, in the same session, that I get memory errors. Do not
know if it is not interacting with Windows memory manager properly, or what.
But if I shut the app down between graphics, it runs great!

 >I also dunno if there will be an MS-WIN GIMP.

There already is.

Have you reported this to the developers?
