Unfortunately, almost as much EMR comes from the sides and back of the
monitor as the front. So while putting some sort of barrier on the screen
can be somewhat helpful, it's still not going to cut as much out as if
you just tossed the tube idea altogether and went with an LCD.

Actually, I used to work in computer retail, and I don't recall ever
seeing a screen filter that filtered out EMR. Ultraviolet and stuff, yes,
but not EMR. You'd have to use some sort of screen mesh - if not a solid
block - of metal to get enough for it to be really useful.

It sounds a lot like my generic AGP card with a Trident 3Dimàge 975 chipset.
It, too, works brilliantly under XFree86, though there was no support prior
to version 3.3.1. With any recent distribution it's fine, though.

As for the Voodoo2, it's not X's department, as it only does the 3D accel

[techtalk] Okay so I recompiled my kernel under RedHat 6.1

I got the printer to work (which it did not for some reason by default under
RedHat 6.1 but did in 6.0). The kernel number is 2.2-12 (something like
that - again I'm under windows). I couldn't get the zip drive (even though I
compiled support for that in and I even created the partion where it was
supposed to be and attempted to mount it). No scsi support even though I
compiled that in. Would I be better off compiling the support for those
items as modules?

With the zip drive, it may be as simple as adding a single line to a
configuration file. Is it a parallel, SCSI, or IDE zip drive? Regular Zip
(100 mb), Zip Plus, 250 mb? With some specifics I might be able to help.

1999-10-26 Thread Tamara Thompson

If setting up your zip is anything like setting up my scsi DAT drive, you might try
looking in /lib/modules/2.2.5-25/scsi (the modules dir for your current kernel,
6.0 is 2.2.5-15, yours might be different)

Then try to load modules to see which one works-
/sbin/modprobe aic7xxx <---that's the one that worked with my Adaptec card

Check /var/log/messages to see if the drive is found.

"You can add a line into /etc/conf.modules and it will automagically load
the driver on demand, rather than you having to 'modprobe' it
manually when you want it." from ckulesa

hope it helps,

1999-10-26 Thread Caitlyn Martin

Hi, Norma,

> It is an early model parallel port drive

OK, you need to add the following line to your /etc/conf.modules file:

alias block-major-8 ppa

If you have the ppa driver in your kernel, that should make it work after a
reboot. The physical device will be /dev/sda4, so if you created a mount
point (i.e.: /mnt/zip), you should be able, with a disk in the drive, to
type:

(for DOS formatted zips:)

mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

and it should then mount your disk. I am using the same sort of drive on my
system, and it works very well indeed.

You may then, once you have it working, want to add a line to your
/etc/fstab file so that it recognized the mount point at boot. Also, if you
are running KDE as a GUI, you can set up the provided mount/unmount icon to
make it point and click, if you'd like.

I hope this helps. If not, let us know what you are seeing, and I'll try to
figure it out with you.

Good luck!
Caity

I once heard that you need to activate SCSI emulation in the kernel (I
didn't see that in dmesg printout) to use the parallel port Zip drive. (I
have a SCSI Zip drive, so I didn't have to deal with this). Caitlyn, is
this is accurate or not?

This sounds reasonable, as I seem to recall that the DOS zip drivers do
some sort of SCSI emulation on the lpt. I don't own a Zip, so I may be
wrong...

ethernet cable length [techtalk]

1999-10-26 Thread Neil ''Fred'' Picciotto

quick question -

i remember that there's some limit on the length of cat-5 cable you can run
between a hub and computer. anyone know what that limit is? and if i need
to go longer, will it work to just stick another hub between, so that i
divide the too-long length into two lengths that are short enough?

thanks!

according to my partner in crime...

it's ~300 meters (mebbe 500), and it is actually NOT a hub and a
computer but between two active routing devices (e.g. bridge, switch,
computer) but not a hub...

IIRC, the IEEE standard is max 100 meters (328 feet).

A quote from : http://www.3com.com/products/dsheets/400317a.html#graphic4

All OfficeConnect Fast Ethernet hubs are Class II. You can directly
connect two Class II Fast Ethernet hubs (Class I hubs cannot be directly
connected to other Fast Ethernet hubs). The total length of cable (A+B+C
below) between two workstations and a nonrepeater piece of equipment (such
as a switch) must not exceed 205 m (672 ft). Each cable (A, B, or C) must
not exceed 100 m (328 ft).

There's more information at the above site, including the graphic this
statement describes.

Re: [techtalk] Okay so I recompiled my kernel under RedHat 6.1

1999-10-26 Thread Stephan Zaniolo

It's further confused by the fact that there's SCSI Support and then
there's SCSI "Emulation" Support. Judging from your dmesg, you've got the
SCSI Support currently compiled in. (I'm not sure if it's needed for this,
but I don't see how it can hurt to leave it in until someone else verifies
it's necessity or you've gotten the Zip drive to work and want to play ;^)

Oh, and remember the zip drive is mounted as partition 4. For example,
mine shows up as sdb at boot time. To mount, in /etc/fstab I have:

/dev/sdb4 /mnt/zipvfat noauto,defaults 0 0

(the vfat is because I used to use these under windows 95/98)

IIRC, the IEEE standard is max 100 meters (328 feet).

That is correct...if you need to go further than that, you can add another
segment, using either a bridge, a router or a hub.

thanks to everyone who responded!

100m will be plenty... i was afraid the limit was on the order of 50-100
ft, in which case there might have been a problem. but i certainly don't
need to go 300 ft (right now anyway!).

Re: [techtalk] Okay so I recompiled my kernel under RedHat 6.1

1999-10-26 Thread Lyta Alexander

if you need scsi emulation this option should be set
SCSI emulation support
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI
This will provide SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices,
and will allow you to use a SCSI device driver instead of a native
  ATAPI driver.
...
that was from the Configure.help in the kernel source documentation
directory
i'm guessing too that you'd need this option set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD
If you want to use a SCSI hard disk or the SCSI or parallel port
version of the IOMEGA ZIP drive under Linux, say Y and read the
SCSI-HOWTO, the Disk-HOWTO and the Multi-Disk-HOWTO, available via
  FTP (user: anonymous) in ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO.
This is NOT for SCSI CDROMs.
and probably this too
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG
If you want to use SCSI scanners, synthesizers or CD-writers or just
about anything having "SCSI" in its name other than hard disks,
CDROMs or tapes, say Y here. These won't be supported by the kernel
directly, so you need some additional software which knows how to
talk to these devices using the SCSI protocol.
...
all that stuff is in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help
hope that is helpful
