[Talks] Talks and whats app

2011-08-27 Thread Daleen Spalletta
Hi all
I have been off the list for a while and might have missed the discussion about
whats app.
I am not sure how to find the information in the archives, so if some one can
tell me how, or help me, with my query, I'll be very grateful.
I am using the latest talks on a nokia E72.
Is there a way to use whats app with out talks reading all the funny
characters, but still read the full message?
Can I add characters and words to the dictionary to make the garbage less?
Thanks very much for any help.

2011-09-03 Thread Daleen Spalletta
I have the same problem with my e72. I just don't here the phone ring. I
recorded a very long time ago a ringing sound from a, what we called,
cricket phone, and that one I here. It is in amr format and I will send it
if you want to try it. It is at a high frequency which works for me.

kim The E71X doesn't have that loud of speaker! You could plug in a
external Amplified speaker or use a bluetooth speaker in the cases you
are talking about.

Speaking of E/70 phones, I have an E/71/X. and I am wondering about The
Speakers and also amplifiers and talks.

I have difficulty hearing the phone and when I put talks at a louder
setting it sounds like my speaker is going to blow. How can I fix this
problem or can I?
I really like my phone, but, I don't hear it very well in another room
and I have to have it right by me to hear it.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi.

If available in your country, try to get a Nokia X5.00
It's a newer phone, and has a standard phone numeric keyboard.

The E70 is older then the E65. The E70 came out in late 2006 or so.

Dpending on the country you are in, you probably can find the E71 and
the E72 still! But you may need to do some looking for it. Note the
E71 and E72 have the qwerty keyboard below the screen.

Re: [Talks] Using the cell phone as a scanner

2011-09-10 Thread Daleen Spalletta
What I understand by this question is actually. What phone that support's
talks, will have a good enough camera to take pictures of pages that can
then be coppeid to a computer and then be read or recognized with a OCR
program so that it can be converted to txt or what ever format.
Talks will only be used to help the user to use the phone, to take the
pictures not to OCR or anything.

Talks is a screen reader and nothing else. So Talks isn't going to do any
scanning for you.

The KNFBReader list is going to be your best bet.

Hi, thanks for the informations. I'm trying to get more info about knfb
but I'd like to insist that we should talk about this subject in this
list because my intention now is just to picture book pages with the cell
phone, not to have the ocr and other speech different from talks. KNFB
seems to have different functions such as ocr inside the cell phone and
its own speech.
But talks users may want just to picture books pages to send it later to
the desktop computer. KNFB will be nice if you need to read texts
imediatelly. But a lot of talks users may want to picture books to read
later. So nokia's phones with talks possibly can help.
But we need to know if we can set the phones to macro mode independently,
using talks.

In nokia's website they say that n95 has macro mode that can focus from
10 centimeters to 50 centimeters. Something around 3 inches to 15 inches.
But I wouldn't like to buy n95 just to test if I can do this kind of
work. If someone can tell me, yes,, you can picture book pages with n95
and talks, I would buy the phone. I still can find it to buy here in
Brazil.

Thanks again, Paulo

Hello.

Basically what you are describing is what the K-NFB Reader program does.

It works on phones such as the N-86 and N-95. I have it on an N-82
myself.

It isn't a function of Talks but a separate program entirely.

Hi listers,
Some of us depend on scanners to read books. I have used flatbed
scanners

but it's kind of tricky to turn pages over.
Yesterday I found some information about the pearl scanner, that works
like

a camera picturing or photographing book pages. It makes the scanning
process much easier because we just need to turn pages with the book on
the

same position. It's much faster. But the pearl scanner costs about 1500
dollars. If some of nokia's phones can photograph book pages, it's an
important extra feature for talks users. If it's a new subject on this
list

and for talks developers, I guess it's already an important matter to
consider. It's related to educational purposes and can make talks even
more

useful for visually impaired people.
But if this idea of using phone cameras as a scanner has already been
tryed
and tests showed it doesn't work, please let me know. An aunt of mine
who's
a photographer told me it's fully possible to get book pages with a
digital
camera with macro function. Some of nokia cameras has macro lenses. I
think

it's a very important thing for us to research.
If you have a n86 or a n95 or any other phone with good lenses, maybe
you
can check if you can access this camera functions such as macro mode,
black

and white mode, etc.
Well, I know my english is sometimes confusing, so if I said something
that

is not comprehensible, plese ask me to explain again.
Regards, Paulo

I have never been able to type with my thumbs. I thought that your thumb
would be to big for the keys although I know sited people does it like that.
Maybe I must try it.

Hi Noni,

In my opinion, it's simply a matter of getting used to the keyboard. Many
sighted folks look at the keyboard of their ordinary computer, yet people
like us are testament to the fact that tactile familiarity is really the
only necessity for effective typing. The same goes for the qwerty
keyboard.

In my case, it took me a few weeks to get used to the keyboard on my E71.
The keys felt small, and I wasn't at all used to either the size or the
layout. Factor in the foreign idea of typing exclusively with my thumbs
and

it all felt rather daunting. A year and a half on and I can now send texts
or emails just about as quickly as my sighted, blackberry-using friends.

I would suggest you take a look at someone's qwerty phone, either with
Talks on training mode or with a sighted person on hand to answer
questions

about specific key positions. I'm afraid it's really the only way to know
whether or not it's something you'll be able to get accustomed to.

Good luck,
Michelle

Dear QWERTY Keypad Users,
I note that many Talks users are using phones with full QWERTY keypad.
Without using vision, how do you manage to type at a reasonable speed? I
have spoken to many sighted persons who use full QWERTY keypad and they
all

confirm that they are looking at the keys when they type. So how do you
manage without visual feedback?
Thanks, Noni :)
