Re: [Tagging] Ambiguous surface=wood

2014-08-22 Thread Dan S
I'd say it's very rare that "wood" could be interpreted as possibly
meaning "woodchip". Woodchip has very different material properties,
and different affordances for travellers. A little bit like saying
"wood" might mean "sawdust" ;)

surface=woodchip is used more often than surface=woodchips, though
neither of them is used very much at the moment:
taginfo.openstreetmap.org/compare/surface=woodchip/surface=woodchips

I would advocate "surface=woodchip" (singular), and preserve the
existing meaning of surface=wood as planks.

Maybe we should document "surface=woodchip"?

Just my 2p

I'd suggest surface=timber & surface= woodchip

Keep surface=wood with the meaning planks. It's used very frequently
(typically for bridges)
Add surface=woodchip(s)

[Tagging] Fwd: Information board details in bus stops

2014-08-22 Thread Pieren
I forward my question here because I think my first attempt was done
on the wrong list (tran...@openstreetmap.org) :

My question is about the information board/boards at bus stops which
someone tries to tag in details in his French city (think about
disabilities). Accidentally, on the transit list, the tag "strip=yes"
was also questionned (check the picture). I guess it's about the road
markings on the road itself where the bus actually stops (but not
sure, it's maybe also something for blinds). Someone on the other list
suggested to replace it by "road_markings=yes". Any other suggestions
about this and the information boards ?

So, after 7 or 8 years of confusion about 2 main tags for "forest",
the best idea now is to introduce a third one...

+1
the singular/plural question cannot be answered easily by looking at current
values, as both occurs, eg paving_stones or concrete:plates, but also
cobblestone, pebblestone or grass_paver:

Plural? paving_stones seems to be more popular than all other forms
combined where it was possible to use plural or singular form.
Anyway, it would be a good idea to decide on plural/singular recommendation
for new values where it is possible to use either possibility.

[Tagging] cobblestone, sett and surface=*

2014-08-22 Thread Mateusz Konieczny
How one should tag surfaces:
- paved with equally sized, flat stones (
https://www.google.pl/maps/@50.061304,19.938305,3a,30y,270.75h,72.93t/data=!3m5!1e1!3m3!1sBcAaihLoEYmtOQbTnOlxWA!2e0!3e5?hl=pl
)
- paved with roughly shaped stones, only partially flattened (
https://www.google.pl/maps/@50.059029,19.940113,3a,30y,276.76h,68.16t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sJiyUyJYQx9Fqv_dC1-18_A!2e0?hl=pl
)

I tag in the first situation as surface=sett and in the second as
surface=cobblestone.

Bur according to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:surface both
should be
tagged as surface=cobblestone. cobblestone:flattened is mentioned
(without any description).

To further complicate situation it seems that both surfaces should be
described
as sett - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sett_%28paving%29

Meanwhile, on taginfo -
https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/surface#values :
- cobblestone 119 216
- sett 6 261
- cobblestone:flattened 2 176

Cobblestones, sett mistaken for cobblestone and flat sett are clearly
different
and I hope for way to differentiate between these, better than using
smoothness.
