I see other documents and signage, particularly in states with a lot of
agriculture, refer to hard and soft shoulders, and roads (especially
Interstate freeways) can have both simultaneously.

Then there's the Californianism of throwing "emergency lane" into the mix
to refer to a hard shoulder closed to traffic that would be allowed in
other situations, like regular bicycle and foot traffic...

Keep the original linear ways, but enclose the right of way surrounding
with a polygon tagged landuse=highway. You can polygon in surface=* if you
get ambitious, and there's also barrier=kerb and other similar tags, IIRC.

[Tagging] Ranger Station Tag Update (too anglo-centric)?

2013-08-25 Thread Bryce Nesbitt
The tag "amenity=ranger_station" passed the wiki hurdle.

It is now a preset in the "iD" editor, and there's an icon proposed for
Maki.
The all-important pull request however is this one, to make it render:
https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/pull/129

However one problem has come up. The JOSM maintainer Don makes a good
point here:

What is the equivalent office called in other countries?

Could this have been less anglo-centric with
   amenity=official_park_police_museum_information_permit_center
or
   amenity=official_park_visitor_services
   building=yes
rather than
   amenity=ranger_station
   building=yes

Hmm, amenity=ranger_station is kind of gross - it's so specific to a
particular culture. Something like amenity=visitor_centre could have been a
lot more generically useful. (With potentially a
visitor_centre=ranger_station for applications that want to be certain
they're dealing specifically with Ranger Stations.)
