Re: [Tagging] How to map an artificial ground wall?

2012-12-20 Thread Janko Mihelić
IMHO you should add a new way that only has those tags. You can share the
nodes with the barrier=embankment if you think the top of the wall is the
border between the aeroway and the outside. If the bottom of the wall is
the border, make the aeroway a little wider.

By the way, mapnik renders man_made=embankment, so I use that. I put two
parallel ways, each in a different direction, to map the two slopes [1]. I
don't know if mapnik renders barrier=embankment. Are they the same thing?

Barry Gules and Argent? Didn't they split up in 1974?

[Tagging] Comments wanted: Placement

2012-12-20 Thread Martin Vonwald
Hi everyone,

Although it is still a draft I would like to get some feedback on this
proposal: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/placement

Please excuse some inconsistencies or missing parts - it's a draft and
not yet polished.

Thanks in advance,
Martin

Who is your target group - who do you think would be understanding and
using this tagging scheme?

You have one tag: placement. Its value tells you where the OSM-way is:
* no tag -> in the middle of the road
* transition -> not parallel to any lane
* middle_of -> in the middle of on lane
* right_of/left_of -> right or left of one lane.

Too complicated?

For me this isn't a good alternative for "drawing" the highway as an
area. This is simple to understand and very flexible. It's not useful to
have more or less two ways of tagging. Maybe you could explain, why it
is useful ?

The wiki says:
"Note on renderers: When speaking of renderers keep in mind that each
navigational device is also a renderer, and - especially if a lane
assist is provided - one with very high zoom levels, i.e. the geometry
of the road is very visible and therefore important. "

I guess it's purely for rendering. Why not (like 'label'). But it's
only useful if you render lanes which is something I've not seen so
far (for nano mapping ?). The point about car navigation systems is
incorrect. It does not care about the highway way position (and no GPS
device is accurate enough to determine on which lane you are).

I wouldn't be so sure about that, professional GPS devices are that
precise, and by combining several signals also consumer grade devices
might be able to get to this precision (i.e. combining glonass, gps,
galileo).

The accuracy of the consumer machines varies greatly by circumstances. I have
had times it was accurate to within a meter or so, and I once had a reading
that was off by about 20 kilometers (admittedly, the latter was during a solar
flare).
