[Sursound] Soundfield ST350

2016-02-08 Thread Steven Boardman
Anyone know what compatible Rycote parts can be used with a Soundfield
ST350 / ST450.
I have quite a few Rycote sets and am reluctant to purchase another full
set from soundfield.
They and their distributors have been less than help full in telling me
what parts are the same. (they use different part numbers than Rycote).
Rycote also can't tell me, as they only make them for soundfield, and say
I need to contact them!

Best

i don't have the blimp for the st450, but the lyre suspension that came
with it is red (in the hope that it'c color-coded for weight).
the length of the microphone body including connector and curved cable
is about 30 cm (see photo sent in private that's probably not going to
make it to the list).

Thanks Jörn

I probably should of mentioned;
It's the windjammer kit parts I was referring to. I will be using it in the
field.

Re: [Sursound] Soundfield ST350

2016-02-08 Thread Chris
I can't reply for Rycote officially, because I only design stuff for
them - I don't have any input in terms of sales or OEM deals with
Soundfield...

In the bad old days I think some clips were made to allow the enormously
fat body of a ST350/450 to be slung inside the "stereo" (150mm)
windshield on sturdy o-rings. Very few Soundfields were used in that way
and I don't think more than a handful of rigs were sold.

With the advent of of "lyre" mounts it has been entirely uneconomical to
tool up for old-style windshield versions that would sell less than 100
in their lifetime. But the USM mount, that was designed for chunky,
side-address studio mics, can support the Soundfields very well. The
only down side is that the these are meant for use on stands, and have
no method of fixing a windshield to them. I suspect that is why you
haven't been getting sensible answers from the distributors, who are
somewhat foggy about such rare microphones.

If you have an old stereo windshield you might be able to perform a
little butchery to make a USM fit - it isn't impossible. But Rycote
wouldn't recommend that sort of one-off work officially.

Rycote will always provide alternative lyres if you are unsure what
version you need - they are pretty good that way.

[Sursound] Advice on practicalities of 16-speaker half-spherical arrangement

2016-02-08 Thread Martin Dupras
Hi,

I'm intending to try setting up a 16-speaker Ambisonics array next
week in a small TV studio. I'm trying to figure out the practical
arrangements for setting up the speakers. I was wondering if anyone
with experience might be able to offer some advice or point me in the
right direction?

What I'm planning at the moment is a half-sphere arrangement which
would likely consist of:

- 8 speakers in a circle of radius 2m at a height of approximately 1.6m
- 6 speakers in a smaller circle at an elevation of 45 degrees
- 2 speakers at an elevation of approximately 75 degrees

Alternatively, I would be happy with an arrangement similar to the
first 16-speakers in this diagramme:
http://www.matthiaskronlachner.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/loudspeaker-plan-observatory.jpg

I've been trying to find out if there is a convention or "most usual"
arrangement but couldn't find anything. I'm not particularly attached
to the actual arrangement, I just want to find an arrangement that
will work well enough with 16 speakers. Any advice?

The other thing I would welcome is advice on how to mount the speakers
to lighting rigs in a manner that is practical enough to offer some
good compromise between precision and ease of setup. I believe the
speakers we'll be using for the upper tiers will be Genelec 8060s.

Many thanks. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

- martin

2016-02-08 Thread John Leonard
The new set-up for an ST3/450 in a Rycote uses a special fitting: it’s a tube
with thumbscrews, mounted on a modified Lyre system. As far as I’m aware, you
have to buy the complete set-up from TSL, at some ludicrously inflated price,
no doubt. I can look at mine when I get home tonight and see how it fits
together and send a link to a picture.

Thanks John - and - sorry Bob - it will be put to good use, I promise.
introducing students to the forerunners of the technology they use today adds a
really useful dimension to their understanding. Though they routinely use
software encoders and decoders, they will be surprised at just how much could
be achieved back in the stone age

I understand. Thanks for the response.

There has been an amazing interest in Ambisonics over here in the VR world.

Our Soundfield mics are getting regular use again after mostly sitting on
the shelf for years.

2016-02-08 Thread Thomas Chen
I have set up 16 speakers in a two layer octagon, 8 locations with an up and
down at each location. This is a decode as a cylinder. It has worked well. I
also used Genelecs. I mounted the speakers in a long narrow box with a bottom
and top. In the Studio I used a Clearstory lighting box and floor as the
supports.

Re: [Sursound] Soundfield ST350

2016-02-08 Thread Steven Boardman
Thanks John.

Yes it is at a ridiculous price, that's why I wanted to use some of my
other kit, and buy the minimum I need from them. I don't see why I can't
use one of my stereo blimps/guns and furries with a
modified suspension. Its just knowing what I can use with what.

Get me off list with those pictures please.

Best regards

Steve
