[sane-devel] How come ghostscript compresses so much better than xsane

2008-07-10 Thread Julien Michielsen
Scanning aa A4 through my xsane (xsane-0.995-79.1 with
sane-backends-1.0.19-48.1 and iscan-free-2.10.0.1-26.1) to a pdf-file I
end up with a file that is bigger than a Mb. I specified compress
options under preferences as png compression level 9, and remain amazed
that running the pdf-ourput file through gs reduces the file-size with a
factor greater than twelve (a.pdf 4560401 , while test.pdf 370760) after
the command
gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=test.pdf a.pdf

I raised this point earlier on this list, but either I didn't formulate
it right, or I didn't understand the answer. I still keep wondering that
the compressing knowledge of gs is not incorporated in xsane.

[sane-devel] unable to join multiple xsane-outputs with ghostscript

2009-02-10 Thread Julien Michielsen
I wish to combine a bumber of scan-outputs in one pdf-file. In the past I was
able to do so with the following command:
/usr/bin/gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite \
-sOutputFile=output.pdf input1.pdf input2.pdf

However, today I tried this (for the first time with xsane from opensuse 11.1)
and received a lot of errormessages:

Anything renewed in XSane 0.995 that may have caused these errors?
The programs I used:

Use XSane's multipage mode.

JB.

Thank you, Julien. Did not know this option to make a multipage project, and
just succeeded to make a 9 page-project. The images reside in
~/multipageproject and are named image-0001.pnm up to *09.pnm. Nothing new to
you here. I made the scans for a MS-Win user who is abroad, and wants to read
his mail. How could he read these images? Does he need acces to a computer
with xsane installed? If so I can advise him to install xsane-win32, but this
might not be necessary. I'd like to hear so from you. Thanks in advance.

[sane-devel] obtaining sane-recognised driver for Samsung mfp-3400

2013-01-15 Thread Julien Michielsen
Hello Julien,

thank you for your email.

My pleasure ;-)
I receive your answer in the digest. I copied your question
to my e-mail-program, but this does not show clearly what part
is yours, and what is mine. I suppose you'll remember what is
yours, and in addition I'll put __ above my text.

I have actually tried installing different versions of the Samsung
Unified Driver, including the one you have used.

I have a 64-bit architecture, Qt4 is installed, the GUI installer
works (the uninstaller doesn't, however).
__
As far as I can see the structure of the 32- and of the 64-lines
are identical.

The GUI installer tells me that it cannot find the SANE API, but I
suspect this is distribution-specific issue, as SANE API is installed
(unless there is some magic package with a totally different name...).
I can choose to proceed with the installation without SANE, so I did
just that.

__
I got the same message and did not worry about it

Now, in Samsung Configurator, when I select scanners, it says there is
no scanner is present.

__
Did not use the Configueator. In SuSE Yast. however. it shows up under
hardware/scanners and is listed as "SAMSUNG SCX-3400 series on USB:0 at
smfp: SAMSUNG SCX-3400 series on USB:0"

I also tried suldr's repository, to no avail.

Would you mind running these commands *as root* and sending me the
samsung_scx_3400.txt file? These commands only collect scanner related
information, nothing
mo/home/julien/local/UnifiedLinuxDriver/cdroot/Linux/i386/qt4/install/guiinstallre.

__
Do not understand what commands you mean. For me the standard instal-
lation (execution of
/home/julien/local/UnifiedLinuxDriver/cdroot/Linux/i386/qt4/install/guiinstall
) worked fine, and put my machine nicely in shape. Don't think I can do much
more than telling the things I have done.

[sane-devel] untested samsung scanners: tried after installation UnifiedLinuxDriver?

2013-01-18 Thread Julien Michielsen
Some time ago I bought the Samsung Scx-3400 laser printer. It also has a
scanner which I could not install under SuSE 12.1. However, when I
installed Samsungs UnifiedLinuxDriver, this also got my scanner working.
It is recognised (and installed) by yast and xsane, even though I did
give any input to those programs. Installing the UnifiedLinuxDriver
might also install other Samsung scanners that are listed as "Untested".
I am very happy with my (unlisted ;-) ) Scx-3400.

I have been scanning for arschival purposes and will tell you how I
achieve this.
-1 xsane allows the type of file you want to use for writing a file
to disk. For archival purposes I use pdf. I made a scan for archival
with the name vkweer1.pdf . For the next scan I wanted to save,
xsane proposed the name vkweer2.pdf. This number goes up by 1 for
each coming scan. After finishing the scanning, I'll combine the
seperate scans into one combined scan with ghostscript. An example
   of a pdf-combining ghostscript:
   gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
   -sOutputFile=vkweerc.pdf vkweer1.pdf vkweer2.pdf

This command creates a combined file ("vkweerc.pdf") from the two
input-files (vkweer1.pdf and vkweer2.pdf) into one output file which
is much smaller than the original input-files:
ls vkw* -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 julien users 682131 Jan 23 11:51 vkweerc.pdf
-rw-r- 1 julien users 14439950 Jan 23 11:46 vkweer.pdf
-rw-r- 1 julien users 14439950 Jan 23 11:47 vkweer2.pdf

As you can see the output of gs (the file vkweerc.pdf) is more
than 42 times smaller than the size of the inputfiles vkweer1.pdf and
vkweer2.pdf combined. Great for archival purposes ;-) . In the setup
of xsane I specified to save the pdf zlib compressed, but appearantly
ghostscript does a much better job, as far as compressing is concerned.

Hope this is useful to you.

[sane-devel] Anyone aware of mfpport.ko?

2007-01-05 Thread Julien Michielsen
I recently upgraded opensuse to level 10.2, and the new xsane version
(xsane-0.991-32) bumps with very strange messages:

insmod: can't read
'/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/kernel/drivers/mfpportctrl/mfpport.ko':
No such file or directory

Before, on 10.1, it worked great with xsane-0.99-14. The present version
is xsane-0.991-32, and somehow they must have screwed ir up for my epson
Perfection 2580. I wrote this to the suse-buglist on dec. 31st, but I
have not received any answer. (Suppose the guys at SuSE are still
looking into it, but with low priority ;-) )
So I might have a better chance here on the list.
My questions:
- how come the program asks for this mfpport-module?
- wouldn't I have a better chance to build xsane myselve? However, I'm
scared to start such a major task: I have no experience to construct an
X application. Anyone knows of a sort of "install your own xsane for
dummies"-howto?

Thank you!

[sane-devel] failing attempt to make sane-backends-1.0.18

2007-01-13 Thread Julien Michielsen
Today I started an attemp to install a self-made xsane, bit allready
failed in the attempt to make sane-backends-1.0.18 .
This is my first attempt of a "home-install" xsane. Before I obediently
installed the ready-made rpm's that came with my SuSE distribution, but
this time (SuSE 10.2) the system was unable to install. On january 1st I
posted a message to this list ("Anyone aware of mfpport.ko?"). The xsane
version that comes with SuSE 10.2 only gives "insmod: can't read
'/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/kernel/drivers/mfpportctrl/mfpport.ko'",
and subsequently dies. I posted this to the suse-bugs list, but still
got no reply.
So now I tries it myself, but already in the make process it bumps out.
My motherboard Asus 8N-E with an Athlon 64+ processor.

The make-process appearantly breaks when it compiles sanei_scsi.c, which
in it's turn uses rsm_open_device. The compiler warns

[sane-devel] failing make sane-backends-1.0.18; sanei_scsi question

2007-01-16 Thread Julien Michielsen
A couple of days ago I posted the message below. No one replied to it
yet, so I may have been unclear, and I'll add a few sentences that may
make my question clearer.
Before upgrading my SuSE from 10.1 to 10.2 my Epson Perfection 2580
fotoscan worked fine, and gave me good quality scans. I was unable to
get it installed on SuSE 10.2, appearantly because (as written below) it
could not read ../mfpportctrl/mfpport.ko. Indeed no subdirectory
./mfpportctrl exists under /lib/../drivers. I am afraid to show my
ignorance with this question, but yet:
My system does not contain any scsi peripherals but stll appears to bomb
on this sanei_scsi function. Points of error:
-1 Warning
sanei_scsi.c:781: warning: 'rsm_open_device' is deprecated (declared at
/usr/include/resmgr.h:24)
program-line 781: fd = rsm_open_device(file, O_RDWR);
-2 Identical warning for line 1245
progl 1245: fd = rsm_open_device(dev, O_RDWR | O_EXCL | O_NONBLOCK);
-3 Error
sanei_scsi.c:1276: error: 'HZ' undeclared (first use in this function)
progl 1276:timeout = sane_scsicmd_timeout * HZ;

I reported the failure of SuSE 10.2 to get my Epson working to the
bug-list (jan. 1st) but did not get any reply. My knowledge (and
interest ;-( ) are at a too low level to go much deeper into this. Would
somebody be able to give me a hint how to get this installed and
running? Bypassing the sanei_scsi-function will not be an option, I suppose.
Thanks

[sane-devel] How to specify work/save-directory

2007-10-30 Thread Julien Michielsen
I've got a big scanjob, in which I want to scan part of the archive of a
club I'm member of. I want to scan month by month, and save the scans in
a directory-structure like dirname/year/month. The years are subdirec-
tories of the top-dirname, and the years have at maximum 12 subdirs, for
the months with material to be archived.
I did try to specify a save-directory under "preferences", and tried two
"candidates" to specify the save-directory: under "setup" one can speci-
fy (under tab Save) the "temporary directory". This did not work as well
as I wish. I've got a rather complicated subdir-structure, and the
directory I intended looked like ~/subdir1/sd2/sd3/sd4/targetdir. A
second candidate to specify the directory settings was the "save device
settings", but whatever I tried, I could not get closer to the targetdir
than ~/subdir1/sd2. Tried a less complicated directorystructure, and
speci- fied /mnt/partition as the save-directory. Tried to specify this
under preferences -> setup -> save , and under
preferences -> setup -> Save device settings.
But whatever I tried, xsane kept ~/subdir1/sd2 as the place to save my
scans to. Did I forget something, or tried something that is entirely
impossible? Or can I indeed specify my work/save-directory wherever I
want to?

Thanks for any help you can give.

[sane-devel] ghostscript so much better with pdf files than xsane

2007-11-30 Thread Julien Michielsen
The filesize of as pdf saved scans is enourmous: one page scans often
take more than 14 Mb of filespace. However, when reading a couple of
them with ghostscript, in order to make a multipage pdf-file of it, the
result shrinks to less than 15% of the original file:
-rw-r--r-- 1 julien users 1817720 Nov 27 23:31 07brbtot.pdf
-rw--- 1 julien users 14808071 Nov 27 17:48 07brb1.pdf
-rw--- 1 julien users 16691483 Nov 27 17:50 07brb2.pdf
-rw--- 1 julien users 13640821 Nov 27 23:30 07brb3.pdf

The first line (of 07brbtot.pdf) is the combination of the three pages
07brb1-3.

The command to create the combined file:

gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=07brbtot.pdf 07brb1.pdf 07brb2.pdf 07brb3.pdf

Especially when sending pdf's bij mail it is usefull to have small scan-
files. Couldn't xsane incorporate a call to gs to reduce it's output?

Thanks

[sane-devel] unable to specify sane default save-directory

2007-11-30 Thread Julien Michielsen
According to the official manual I should be able to specify the
directory where sane saves its scans under preferences. However, when I
go to preferences (in my xsane 0.994), I only see the options "save
device settings"and "load device settings". In addition there is an
option "setup" (under preferences) which allows to specify the tempo-
rary directory. That is not what I want either. Does another possibility
exist to specify the default save-directory?

the command lpr does reside on my machine:

but when I execute it from a console:

What might be the reason for this failure, and why does it want to

Thought it might help to re-install. So I saved the configuration files
I had adjusted, and re-installed the rpm.
After re-installing I ended up with the same failure. The error-message
before it died:
lpr: Error - no default destination available.
This is slightly different from above, where it only said "failed to
execute". Maybe this gives a hint to anyone?

[sane-devel] How to define xsane printer

2007-12-24 Thread Julien Michielsen
Would like to define my printer for the xsane copy mode, for being able
to make a fotocopy with my scanner. But I don't know how to define my
printer.
This is what I did.
First sone definitions:
Architecture of my machine: Asus A8NE Mobo with Athlon 64 processor.
Distro SuSE 10.3 for i32 processor
Scanner: Epson 2580
xsane 0.994

Went to Preferences -> Setup -> Copy mode

After switching to Copy mode, one line below the mode definition
(copy/view/save ...) the printer definition appears as "new printer".
But this "new printer" only shows three options: "New Printer Shift +F1"
and two more times for +F2 and +F3. Entering Shift +F1 while scanning
(or before scanning) does not give the option to define the printer. And
I did define the printer of my desktop. But sane does not seem to see it.
How to get this done?
Thanks

[sane-devel] How to define xsane printer

So I did, and I'll give the the details for the others who'd like to
accomplish the same.
Started yast2, the Suse configuration tool, and clicked on hardware.
Subsequently I clicked printer, and this opens a new panel with one line
showing among others
Que nameModel .
ml1610 Samsung/Ml1610

so I edited the general command you displayed above into
lpr -P ml1610

And likewise every SuSE-user can use the lpr command for his particular
printer.
Thanks, Oliver
