[sage-edu] Re: Saving 3D plots

2010-04-20 Thread kcrisman
Not sure why it didn't show up at sage-support... but anyway, here is
an email from Wayne Decatur about this issue. Anyone (Jason?) know if
this is something we can take advantage of in our Jmol installation?

Hi Dox and kcrisman,

I saw your post when searching for posts about Jmol for the
Proteopedia twitter account.

Do you actually need the viewing 'angle' or are you just hoping to be
able to open it again in the exact view or send that view to someone?

Either way, the recent Jmol versions save that information when you
save the state, and in fact you can look at that in the state in the
jmol console and save and then reload. The most recent version in fact
saves the exact view and data all in png format that you can drag and
drop in the application or signed apple. I saw Bob Hanson demonstrate
it at UMass a couple weeks ago. It is noted at
http://www.mail-archive.com/jmol-us...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg14290.html,
although the full majesty of it is not readily apparent from the post.
You sort of have to see it to see in action. The goal is to be able to
save one file and be able to send it to someone and have them open it
with the exact view for which it was saved.

But if you don't have the most recent Jmol, look into saving the stare
script and pasting it back in and running it.

We have a very outdated version of jmol. Jonathan Gutow (a jmol
developer) has been working a lot on updating jmol in Sage and
integrating it better into Sage (for which we are *very* grateful!); he
responded to some message about this in the last few days and pointed to
the URL that contains his current work.

I know he's been busy for the last month or two, but he might have time
to work more on this now.

I've CCd Jonathan.

Thanks,

Jason

sage: sage.plot.plot3d.tachyon?

I imagine that looking more in depth at the Tachyon documentation (not
just the result of the above command) might help you more. I am sorry
that I don't know the answer to this, though.

I am copying this on sage-support, which is a more appropriate forum
for it.

[sage-edu] Re: Saving 3D plots

2010-04-20 Thread Jonathan
First, about my available time (very little), but I hope to spend some
more time on this come Mid-May.

2nd, the saving of views:

Case 1: the user wants to send the graph to someone else who then
opens it in Jmol to see what they were looking at. This can be done
by switching to a recent version of Jmol and using the signed applet
in SAGE. Then the user can save the view in a .jpg or .jmol file on
their disk drive. So this one should be easy.

Case 2: Saving a worksheet after the user has changed the way the 3-D
plot looks. This requires saving data back to the server and will
require quite a bit more work. I think this will require a direct
collaboration between a Jmol programmer and someone with significant
experience programming the worksheet server. I estimate 2-4 wks of
solid work. I will need some way of getting some real credit for the
work, if I am to pursue it. Because of difficulties getting credit for
scholarship at my institution this translates into pay, a grant award
or some way of getting a refereed publication from the work. That
said, I will try to address it as I work in my "free" time on the Jmol
SAGE interface.

OK, I gave it the good 'ol college try! I tried to compare and
contrast teaching with a Graphing Calculator vs. SAGE at a conference I
spoke at last Friday.

My presentation was entitled "Look Ma, No Calculator!" The only
problem I had was, when I had everyone log into http://www.sagenb.org,
the internet connections were VERY slow and I couldn't do much

This is not a reflection on SAGE, its the poor quality PC Lab they
threw us into. For more info, please visit my blog linked to my
