[RE-wrenches] phase issues with SB8000US

2010-08-30 Thread Nik Ponzio
Wrenchers,

We installed our first SunnyBoy 8000 this month. The customer (happens to be
electrical engineer) is complaining that their computer UPS systems are
tripping whenever the air conditioner (with 120V fan) comes on. This didn't
happen before commissioning the solar system and it doesn't happen when the
inverter is disconnected. So, of course, they suspect the inverter is the
culprit. The theory being that the inverter itself is going out of phase
when one of the legs is loaded down momentarily.

So far, SMA tech support is not agreeing. They are blaming the problem on
the unbalanced loads and/or the UPS systems. Their latest solution is to
move the UPS systems to the other leg. Not surprisingly, the customer is not
impressed with this game of Kick the Can Down the Road.

The inverter does not drop the grid, nor display any error codes when this
happens. This is a 200A, 240V service. The 120V fan draws about 10A
continuously, 40A surge.

Anybody else with similar experiences? Suggestions?

Thanks
Nik

[RE-wrenches] we have lost a good man

2011-05-18 Thread Nik Ponzio
The industry has lost a pioneer and the world has lost a really decent
human.

I don't know any details yet but Jim Grundy of Elemental Energy died
unexpectedly yesterday.

I didn't know him well but I liked everything I knew about him. He was
honest and kind and he did good work. He truly was an example for all of us.
I wish I had told him what I thought of him when I had a chance.

You will be missed, Jim. Go in peace.

[RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

2011-06-22 Thread Nik Ponzio
Esteemed Wrenches,

I have been using a lot of SolarWorld mono-crystalline modules this year and
I am quite happy with the product. This week we installed our first
SolarWorld poly-crystalline array. I was surprised at how different the two
modules are. The glass on the poly module is highly reflective. I went so
far as to call my distributor to make sure I hadn't gotten a bad batch that
missed the anti-reflective coating step. That's what it seems like!

The other significant difference is the frame style used. The Poly are only
compatible with top-down clamping. I was aware of this from the datasheets
but I had no idea that the glass would be so different.

Take a look at some side-by-side photos here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/109634809794570027207/SolarWorldMonoVsPoly?authkey=Gv1sRgCMuLy4v_ivTUAg&feat=directlink

Just a heads-up to anyone considering getting into SolarWorld.

Happy Summer!

Re: [RE-wrenches] SolarWorld Poly

2011-06-23 Thread Nik Ponzio
Bill,

I was afraid of that!

One thing I didn't mention earlier is that the old-style frame widths of the
Mono have some significant variation from end to end. This makes it
difficult to maintain a nice even gap between rows. The newer Poly frames
(top-down only) seem to have a much tighter tolerance on the square
dimensions. I still like the Mono style better, but it sounds like we will
have to adapt...

We did also have two freight-damaged shipments. This is mostly an issue
caused by a careless forklift operator but the factory & distributors are
also cutting corners with the packaging.

If you see receive a pallet that looks like this,
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_23bAMmghhHRqFjEzsOtkyibeFbxo7C9BtDVyGYSu5g?feat=directlink
I suggest you refuse delivery and let the shipper deal with the freight
claim. What a pain that is!

Otherwise, no failures yet. All systems are go!

[RE-wrenches] FINALLY! A flashed solar thermal penetration option

2011-07-05 Thread Nik Ponzio
We have been fabricating our own flashings recently but I just came across
this product:

Looks good! I haven't seen it in person but I did see a sample of their PV
attachment flashing assembly (similar to Quickmount) and it looked solid.

I would appreciate any feedback from the group.

[RE-wrenches] best method for covering solar thermal collectors?

Hi Wrenchers,

What have you found to be the best way to cover flat-plate collectors? I
have several systems that need to be filled about 2 months before
occupancy. The Heliodyne collectors I used for this project do not have a
protective film like the Viessmann collectors.

Any feedback is appreciated.

[RE-wrenches] dual stacked inverters on 208V service

2009-12-31 Thread Nik Ponzio
Hi Gang,

I have a problem. We are installing a gridtie PV system with 2
battery-based inverters for 240V. The service coming in to the condo is
120/208 split-phase fed from 3-phase 208 in main building. The master
inverter pickups up L1 but the slave inverter will not sync. What am I

[RE-wrenches] backup without batteries

2013-03-25 Thread Nik Ponzio
Forgive my senility. I recently read somewhere about development of grid-tie
inverters without batteries that offer emergency power via a single 120V
receptacle during grid outage (and sun.)
Anyone seen anything on these? The brands mentioned were SMA & Mitsubishi.

Thanks in advance.

[RE-wrenches] SunEdison Monitoring Echosolar.com

2018-04-07 Thread Nik Ponzio, Building Energy
Wrenchers,

We sold a few SunEdison PV systems with EchoSolar monitoring platforms. The
monitoring worked for a while after the SunEdison collapse, but it's not
working anymore. (The domain is for sale.)

Does anyone have information about the current status of this company or
know of a 3rd party (4th party?) platform that can make use of the existing
network equipment?

Thanks for any help!

[RE-wrenches] rain guard

2018-04-30 Thread Nik Ponzio, Building Energy
We have a roofmount PV array that is very close to the run gutter. The
customer is concerned that the runoff during heavy rain will overshoot the
gutter. So I'm looking for a product that will mount at the lower edge of
the array and slow down the rain water. I looked that Alpine SnowGuards but
they all have a small gap between top of solar module and bottom of the
snow rail.

Any suggestions?

[RE-wrenches] Squirrel Guards for Solarworld 2.0 Frames

We need to add squirrel guards to an older system with Solarworld panels.
The 2.0 frames are not compatible with the snapNrack or spiffy solar guards
that we have used in the past. Any other products that we should consider?

[RE-wrenches] copper roof

2013-09-16 Thread Nik Ponzio, Building Energy
Dear Wrenches,

We installed a PV system on a copper roof several years ago. We used brass
S5!-U clamps on standing seam and aluminum racking. We are now noticing
some discoloration at the drip-line below the modules. See photos here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/109634809794570027207/CopperRoof?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCMv8n6rCl8e8Sw&feat=directlink

There is also a fair amount of discoloration from bird droppings but that
doesn't seem to be the cause of the spots under the modules.

Does any know what's happening here, whether to be concerned about
corrosion, and how to prevent this in the future?

[RE-wrenches] remember the pirate solar inverter?

Question for the old timers out there: What was very early micro inverter
called that was designed to plug directly into the wall? It had DC input
for single solar panel and the output was a live 120V male plug.

On a related note, is there anything like the SMA Secure Power Supply
inverters that will run off just 1 or 2 panels?

[RE-wrenches] grid-tie solar behind a generator

2021-02-25 Thread Nik Ponzio, Building Energy
We are installing 25kW of PV on a service with an existing backup generator
(Eaton 30KW) and auto transfer switch. Because of the remote location of
the generator and transfer switch, we can not easily connect on the
grid-side of the transfer switch as we usually do (without cutting a very
long trench.) So we're looking for a way to lock out the solar during
generator use. And then, ideally, reconnect the solar automatically when
the grid is restored.

Is there an off-the-shelf product available at this point to accomplish
this?

I see a thread on here
<https://mailtrack.io/trace/link/7643522e54e5bd30057d2e139c7b93d1c488b655?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mail-archive.com%2Fre-wrenches%40lists.re-wrenches.org%2Fmsg23906.html&userId=6273276&signature=c4db635fbd2d1225>
from a couple years ago that recommended the Generac SMM for this type of
scenario. Any current thoughts on this approach?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[RE-wrenches] in search of 31" wide solar panel

2021-06-18 Thread Nik Ponzio, Building Energy
We need a single panel to replace a damaged unit in a very visible
location. The original panel is a Panasonic HIT225 (circa 2013)
with dimensions 62.2 x 31.4 x 1.8 in. The critical dimension is the width.
I have about 4 inches to work with on the mounting rails, but can't go all
the way up to a 40" wide panel. Ideally black-on-white, but this is less
critical than dimensions.

Any suggestions? Please respond off-list.
