Re: [RE-wrenches] Power Crimper and Stripper Recommendations and Questions

2024-10-22 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
Maybe it's the lugs I am using, but even when I VERY carefully strip 4/0
fine stranded cable, it is very difficult to get all strands into the lugs.
I don't think a mechanical stripper would be workable, but maybe I'm doing
something wrong.

I gave up on Magna Lugs in favor of the flared lugs from PV-Cables.com.

I am watching with interest about feedback on the Milwaukee crimpers. I
like expensive tools, but I'm having a hard time justifying this one. My
local battery store has a manual bench mounted crimper that works wonders
and they let me use it for free as long as I buy something there. I keep
forgetting to get the model number on it because I might buy one to clamp
to my bumper for making cables when necessary.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Power Crimper and Stripper Recommendations and Questions

2024-10-22 Thread Sindelar Solar via RE-wrenches

Jason,
Here's a simple trick for getting fine-stranded cable into a lug: Make
two very careful radial cuts around the end of the insulation, one at
the intended end of the insulation and a second about halfway or less
toward the cable end. Remove the ring of insulation closest to the end.
Slide the remaining ring to the end of the cable but don't remove it
from the cable. Press the cable end into the lug opening as far as it
will go; the ring of insulation holds the strands together. Slit the
ring and push it the rest of the way into the lug. Crimp.

much easier with the flared lugs.

[RE-wrenches] Power Crimper and Stripper Recommendations and Questions

2024-10-22 Thread Sam Haraldson via RE-wrenches
Wrenches,

We are embarking on a project in November that has enough battery cable and
terminal crimps to justify researching and buying power tools specific to
the task. If other Wrenches have product recommendations I'll take them.
The battery wire we've spec'd is 4/0 copper (UL 1283 / MTW / THW).

For the stripper should I be looking for a stripper that works for copper "THHN
/ XHHW" or "RHW / RHH / USE"? Logic would suggest THHN but I don't know
enough about the individual properties of these wire types to understand
the pros and cons of how well it will strip the wire given the different
insulating jacket thicknesses.

So far in my initial research I have only found crimpers that are
lineman-specific and haven't dived into the realm of automotive tools so
any direction that folks could throw my way along this avenue will also be
appreciated.

Cheers,
Sam

I love our Milwaukee Force Logic crimper - beautiful, effortless crimps in
small spaces We get nice flared crimp lugs of all various sizes from PV
Cables Inc. - Bryan over there takes good care of us. After years of doing
crimps manually the knuckles on my hands really appreciate the battery
powered devices. For stripping the wire I like the sire slitter/stripper
like this

one available online. These are good at removing insulation without
disturbing the strands inside making it easy to slip into a flared lug and
even doable if not flared.
One of my other favorite tools is the battery powered Milwaukee hole
punch. Those two tools really make doing battery based systems much more
efficient with clean tidy results.
Keep up the good work.
Happy fall!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Power Crimper and Stripper Recommendations and Questions

2024-10-22 Thread Michael Morningstar via RE-wrenches
Polarwire's Arctic Ultraflex and the lugs they sell are made for each
other. No errant strands to deal with. Insulation cuts easily with any
knife. I cut lengths with a small cordless bandsaw. I crimp with a cheap
Chinese hydraulic crimper. I used the Milwaukie on a job and it was nice,
but I've never felt the need to buy one and I make lots of cables. 30
yesterday. And I'm a tool queer :)

2024-10-22 Thread Tyrone Houck via RE-wrenches
Here's a link to the dies(U style copper)

https://www.platt.com/p/0010680/milwaukee/8-600-mcm-copper-u-style-die-kit/045242339372/mil4916kitc

And the tool..

https://www.platt.com/p/0010677/milwaukee/600-350-mcm-crimping-tool/045242339488/mil267922

They have a larger one for up to 750mcm and a m12 one but I think this one
is the ticket.
