[RE-wrenches] Low Frequency transformer off-grid inverter options

2023-01-13 Thread Mac Lewis via RE-wrenches
Hello Wrenches,

I have a new client that has ran a pretty decent wood shop for about 10
years on a Magnum 4448. He's got some large loads, planers, saws,
compressors vacuums etc. They are really nice, heavy duty pieces of
equipment. Amazingly, the Magnum has been able to start these loads for
the most part for 10 years, but he has reported that it has gotten worse
lately (could be a load issue), brown outs, dimming etc

He wants to upgrade the system, get remote monitoring etc. I tried a test
with a Sol-Ark 12, and it won't start these large motor loads. I was a
little surprised by that but I know they aren't as good as the low freq
transformer based inverters at these surges.

I confirmed that its not just an overload from imbalance because the 240V
loads will also overload it. I got an inrush measurement of 48.5A Ac @240
(but it didn't start the load before Sol-Ark would shut off)

What are my options?
Schneider XW Pro 6848
Outback Radian 8048 (Is this a low freq device?)
Sunny Islands are beasts but weird to work with and not user friendly

Any others I should consider? He does have some significant 120 only loads
so I don't think the Outback vfxr are a good choice.

Is it as simple as saying if the Magnum can start this load, the Radian
should?

I appreciate your input!

Good question Larry,

Rock solid 52V on a lithium battery system. Doesn't appear to be a battery
problem at all.

Larry.

Hera's an idea. Put a 1:1 isolation transformer of suitable power rating
between the inverter and load. The iron core will act as a energy
storage element allowing for a cleaner ac waveform during start.

Hi Mac

The radian is low voltage transformer
Based. Has hella surge capacity

I would consider what web based monitoring system he wants and go with that
platform.

Regardless of system I’d install soft start/vfd on the larger units. Just
easier on everything.

The solark 12 doesn’t seem to be good for larger loads and doesn’t do out of
balance well, and limited to 6kw per phase. The new 15 might be better, not
sure. Numerous YouTube videos showing side by side vs XW and radian. Both run
stuff over their rating which the SolA won’t run even though its under its
rating.

Good luck

There is not anything I know of that will out surge XW pro 6948. A great
monitoring platform and much better support/installer training in the
last 18 months. Perfect for a shop with unknown peak surges.

What are my options?
Schneider XW Pro 6848
Outback Radian 8048 (Is this a low freq device?)
Sunny Islands are beasts but weird to work with and not user friendly

Any others I should consider? He does have some significant 120 only
loads so I don't think the Outback vfxr are a good choice.

Is it as simple as saying if the Magnum can start this load, the
Radian should?

I appreciate your input!

Re: [RE-wrenches] Envoy-R replacement

2023-01-13 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
Be very careful with old units on eBay. They may not be usable. There was a
security certificate update that was necessary to keep units communicating
with Enlighten. If the unit was offline and the update was not applied, it
was essentially bricked from a remote upgradeability standpoint. I can't
remember how I got around that once - there was someone in engineering that
I think was able to remotely recover it, but it wasn't something they
necessarily are willing or want to do.

It stinks to have to upgrade people to a hardwired Envoy S or Envoy
S-Metered, but ultimately its a better unit with ITK capability and a
better warranty.

On that note, I'm going to be replacing quite a few very soon due to
submersion issues from Hurricane Ian. I'm not even thinking of offering the
Envoy-R option. Everyone has to upgrade.

[RE-wrenches] Shipping

2023-01-13 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Friends:

A while ago I posted some questions about shipping. I know this is
tangential to solar installation, but you can’t install what you can’t get.

I got my rail but there were some hiccups. I thought some of you might
benefit from my experience:

I contracted for the shipping using Shiply. The vendor sent the wrong
quantity of the wrong rail and it arrived damaged. I refused the
shipment. I was also charge for use of a lift gate even though I used my
forklift.

I turns out I was liable for the cost to ship back the wrong, defective
rail. This was because I contracted the shipment. Fortunately the vendor
paid for the return and did so promptly.

Here is what I will do next time:

1. I will always pay for damage insurance.

2. On the PO I will put a note that the shipper is responsible for paying
for return shipping in the case of incorrect parts or damage that could be
attributed to poor packaging.

3. Before contracting for the shipping I will insist I have a contact
number for the vendors warehouse foreperson.

4. I will ask the foreperson to send me photographs of the shipment after
it is packaged. I want the photos to show the quantity, the part number
label and that the packaging is adequate.

5. Only after I see all is correct will I approve the pickup.

6. At the time of delivery, and before the driver leaves, I will
photograph the unloading using my forklift with the delivery truck
in-frame. I will check carefully for damages. If there is damage to the
contents I will refuse the shipment. If there is damage to that packaging
I will photograph that with the truck or driver in frame and note the
damage on the BOL.

I hope none of you ever have this many problems with shipping.

William

Re: [RE-wrenches] Low Frequency transformer off-grid inverter options

2023-01-13 Thread Chris Sparadeo via RE-wrenches
I have a client with a large woodworking shop…cabinet table saw, large 20”
240V bench planer, chop saws, compressors and a vacuum system. A single Sol
Ark 15K takes care of these loads flawlessly. It seems that that inductive
load snag with the smaller models has been resolved with the 15K.

Best,

Re: [RE-wrenches] Envoy R replacement (Dave Tedayan)

2023-01-13 Thread don energysolarnow.com via RE-wrenches
Hi Dave
You can get a used Envoy-R to talk to the local microinverters, but you will
not be able to reassign it to the new site. You will have to beg Enphase to do
this for you. Sometimes this costs money if they think you are reassigning the
whole system to a new owner.
But why bother? The Envoy-R was superseded by the Envoy-S that can do Wifi and
talk to the app in AP mode as well.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if you can get any old used Envoy-R (the one in the
attached image) off ebay to replace a failed one? If the used one used to
be associated with another site, would there be issues with installing it
somewhere else?

Cheers,
Dave

Re: [RE-wrenches] Envoy-R replacement

2023-01-13 Thread Nick Soleil via RE-wrenches
My experience is that this was a low volume product that most distributors
don't stock. We sell it on the Enphase store as a service to installers and
homeowners. .

Thanks, Nick.

Is that available through distribution at wholesale pricing?

Be very careful with old units on eBay. They may not be usable. There was a
security certificate update that was necessary to keep units communicating with
Enlighten. If the unit was offline and the update was not applied, it was
essentially bricked from a remote upgradeability standpoint. I can't remember
how I got around that once - there was someone in engineering that I think was
able to remotely recover it, but it wasn't something they necessarily are
willing or want to do.

It stinks to have to upgrade people to a hardwired Envoy S or Envoy S-Metered,
but ultimately its a better unit with ITK capability and a better warranty.

On that note, I'm going to be replacing quite a few very soon due to submersion
issues from Hurricane Ian. I'm not even thinking of offering the Envoy-R
option. Everyone has to upgrade.
