[RE-wrenches] wire management on Qcell AC module

2022-06-02 Thread Dave Tedeyan via RE-wrenches
Hi All,

I just got some of the Qcell 360w AC modules that have the Enphase
microinverter factory applied to the back. The module is the half cut cell
type with the DC leads coming from either side of the middle of the module.
The modules come with the wires taped to the back of the module. If you
remove that tape, there appears to be almost no way to properly manage
those wires. Is that tape meant to just keep the wire on the back of the
module forever? Would that even last more than a year? I am curious what
other people have done for these if they have used them or something
similar. Maybe if you get the rail in the right spot, the wires will just
sit on the rail...

I realize that we have had a thread on wire management with half cut cell
modules before, but this is a little different, as I am specifically asking
about that tape and if anyone knows if it holds up over time.

Cheers,
Dave

2022-06-02 Thread Jason Szumlanski via RE-wrenches
That's concerning. We just added these to our product offerings. I reviewed
the QCell installation manual for this product and there doesn't seem to be
any guidance on the subject.

Are the DC leads tight enough when connected to the microinverter that they
would not sag enough to touch the roof, or is the tape the only thing
preventing the leads from touching the roof?

[RE-wrenches] Schneider Inverter Unbalance

2022-06-02 Thread Drake Chamberlin via RE-wrenches

Hello Wrenches,

A pair of Schneider XW Pro inverters will not share the load. We had
used a configuration tool, with the help of Jose at tech support, and
temporarily got the pair to balance. We adjusted the output voltages so
that the inverters would share the load.

Later the inverters started drifting. At present, one will take all the
load until it reaches a point around its maximum production limit. Then
that inverter will stop production and the other will take over.

Is there a defective inverter? Any ideas at all about what might be
going on?

Thank you,

Drake

Re: [RE-wrenches] wire management on Qcell AC module

2022-06-02 Thread William Miller via RE-wrenches
Dave:

Could you send a photograph, please?

Indeed this problem has been addressed before. The only solution presented
was to add jumpers to lengthen the leads so they could be clipped to the
module frames. This method is sub-optimal due to cost and the adding of
potential failure points.

I can’t answer your question about the tape being a lifetime solution from
an experience or engineering standpoint, but consider this logic: Based on
our understanding of the environment behind a solar panel, it seems highly
unlikely any kind of tape would last the 25 years required. Think about
the consequences if you rely on the tape and it fails: you have to remove
the panels, lengthen the leads, wire manage correctly, and reinstall the
panels.

We tried mounting Enphase inverters to module frames but we aborted and
went right back to rail-mounting the inverters. Wire management was much
easier for us, especially with Snap-N-Rack rail.

Fortunately for me my local Greentech dealer was willing to bring in a
container of Mission 350 60 cell modules (MSE350SX5T) and I bought as many
pallets as I could fit in my warehouse. These have both leads emanating
from the short edge. The leads dress neatly and the panels combine well
into the Outback FM100. Plus they are US made and an all-around good panel.

I guess my purchase is a small example of market influence. Based on what
you report we should boycott this product line. I hope you can return them.

Regarding the tape on the back sheet
I have seen Novis installers keep the tape to secure the modules and I have
also seen it with the tape stll attached to the wires laying on the roof so
in my humble opinion the tape is for shipping only and is not to be used as
a wire management system.

You didn’t give a lot of info but I don’t think there is a product that meets
your requirements.

I’m guessing its either 24v or 48v system with with a C40 controller.

Personally I’d leave the old system as 20 year old modules are not cost
effectively worth messing with.
And if you did, you’d get what a couple hundred watts more at max maybe?

And then use the CC that best fits your system for the 5kw new. 100 amp,
midnite or OB or Schneider

My 2 cents

Re: [RE-wrenches] wire management on Qcell AC module

2022-06-02 Thread Jay via RE-wrenches
These modules are designed for racking w/o MLPE and the rest of the world that
doesn’t use MLPE.

And code in both 300.11 and 330 ish say that wires need to be supported between
6” and 12” ( I’m not sure which is the correct one to use, I’ve always been
told to use 12”) from any box or termination. Which means to me that wire
extensions are required.
Adapters might be needed anyway If the modules and MLPE don’t have same ends to
meet both OEM, UL, and NEC requirements.

Just the way it is, but boy did I wish they made those Junction boxes with wire
mounting clips on them so we could easily go across the module in the middle
and be supported.

Re: [RE-wrenches] wire management on Qcell AC module

2022-06-02 Thread Chris Schaefer via RE-wrenches
G'day All

I rarely do roofs but I can tell you with my pole, ground or DAT projects
it's nearly impossible to cover the modules with a screening product for
safety reasons. I refuse to use the mid panel j-box modules. I'm not one
for boycotts but just use the old school modules with the j-box mounted on
the portrait end. Thus when the modules aren't moving perhaps the
manufactures will reach out and ask us installers/engineers as to why. Yeah
right, lol.

Regarding the tape on the back sheet

I have seen Novis installers keep the tape to secure the modules and I have
also seen it with the tape stll attached to the wires laying on the roof so in
my humble opinion the tape is for shipping only and is not to be used as a wire
management system.

I realize that we have had a thread on wire management with half cut cell

Re: [RE-wrenches] wire management on Qcell AC module

2022-06-02 Thread Rebekah Hren via RE-wrenches
Please note we updated 2020 NEC 690.31(C)(1) to allow 24" between
securing/supporting points for PV cable, and removed the problematic
reference to 334.30.

The change was made because as you all know there is not always a way to
secure wires within 12" of a box on the back of a PV module. Of course
wires should definitely not be allowed to touch the roof but the hope is
that 24" allows for proper wire management but with a little more freedom.

2023 NEC will update to 24" for ≤ 8awg, 54" for >8 awg. If you disagree,
please let me know and we can work on a public input for 2026.

Best,
Rebekah

Re: [RE-wrenches] dual channel charge controllers?

2022-06-02 Thread Kirk Herander via RE-wrenches
Hi Jay,
It's a recently converted to 48 from 24v system with BI Hi LFP batteries.
And I'd like to see all pv's online, hence my need for an up-to-date
controller(s).
Old controller (it replaced a Heliotrope PWM unit, man that's taking me
back) Is actually an OB MX60, but too old for a hub port. New inverter is
an OB Radian 4048.
