[RBW] FS - Sackville TrunkSack small (olive) - $60

2013-10-21 Thread sean
Bought this a few years ago and used on my Mark's rack. Great small bag,
but I haven't used it for awhile as I have been running panniers and a wald
basket (with a Shopsack). TrunkSack is in great shape and just has minor
scuffs on the canvas from where the shock cord was on the top D-rings and
where it attached to the rack. It has the Sackville metal plate (instead in
the newer cloth badge) #161.
Here's the problem though. I don't have paypal, but would love a Riv gift
certificate. Plan on placing an order soon after reading the recent blug.
So, if you're interested and are ok with that kind of payment, shoot me an
e-mail. I have a few pics of it mounted on the Ram and could take others if
need be.

Price includes shipping to lower 48.

Thanks,
Sean O'Bryan

[RBW] Re: Soma Oxford vs. Nitto Albatross

2014-02-25 Thread sean
Hi Cecily,

I used Nitto North Roads and I found them similar enough to Albatross bars
but a little wider and more comfortable. So, you may consider those. They
seem to be more widely available too. That being said, I am with Liesl on
this one. I have similar vertebrae issues (stenosis in the neck) and have
converted two of my bikes to Bosco bars. I can attest that they are great
bars and offer many more positions that the Albatross. When Grant developed
them, I honestly never in a million years thought I would ride bars like
that. But after 2 rounds of PT, I committed to a more upright riding style
(bye-bye drop bars) and find the Boscos to be wonderful. They are nice and
wide and offer a natural position for cruising but also allow you to grab
ahead of your levers for climbing and more aggressive riding. I've even
grab the "flats" and tucked into a aerodynamic descent. They also allow
plenty of room up front for a nice basket (on a Mark's rack) with no cable
interference.
Good luck with you setup and glad to hear you are back on the bike!

Best regards,
Sean

Welcome Shawn. I am also a Sean from Austin, TX. Long time lurker,
some time poster. Rode my Rambouillet in the Tour das Hugel a few
weeks ago and it handled like a champ. Between Jeff and msyelf, we had
some Rivendell/Heron representation. Nice Bridgestones you've got
there. Anyway, welcome. The Austin Riv contingent is growing...

Hi Jon,

My wife met you a few months ago at Circle C Park and gave me your
business card. It's not everyday that you run into cyclers on
Rivendells in Austin (but it is getting better all the time). Thought
I'd officially say hi!
Great to hear from more Austin Riv/Bob types. I concur with Bearpapa.
I think an Austin BOB/Riv ride should be in order. Getting to be great
weather for wool too.

[RBW] MKS Grip Kings

2010-05-11 Thread sean
Hi Group,

Thinking of pulling the trigger on some Grip Kings, but am concerned
about their dimensions. Basically, I want to be able to ride in any
and all shoes/sneakers especially Chuck Taylor type shoes (actually
Keen Coronados) and Birkenstocks. Currently I am using the MKS Touring
with cages, which worked great with Sambas over the years but now
they're hurting my feet. My question is: are the Grip Kings too long
for say a size 7-8 shoe? I have wide feet but not very big feet. I am
concerned that the GKs might be so long they'll feel like planks under
my feet. how do the GR9s compare? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

[RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings

2010-05-11 Thread sean

Thanks for all the input everyone. Very helpful and dispelled some of
my concerns. I went ahead and ordered some. I am hoping the width to
length ratio will work well for me. I still ride "clicked in" on my
Rambouillet (for long distance riding), but love "pedaling free" for
commuting and general riding/errands/grocery hauling, etc. Agree with
Mike, it really is very liberating. I still think clipless pedals have
their place though depending on the type of riding. I guess maybe my
"type of riding" is changing more and more over time. Thanks again
all.

[RBW] Re: gripkings

2010-05-11 Thread sean
Thanks for the imput Grant and others. I bit the bullet and ordered
some. The "plank" statement wasn't so much about having alot of
support under my feet as it was abotu being concerned the "meaty"
parts of my feet would be positioned in the wrong place on long
pedals. Seems that these pedals will work well for my foot size and,
beyond that, it is all personal preference. Hoping to love them and
not look back. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Riding in Austin

2009-04-02 Thread sean

Hi Tim,

here is another good site with many Austin cycling resources:

http://austinontwowheels.org/

There are many good rides in the area and you can put in some serious
miles here year round. There are many club rides, decent shops, and a
local randonneuring group.

http://bicyclesportshop.com/
http://freewheelingbicycles.com/

http://www.hillcountryrandonneurs.com/

Like much of the American West, Austin has it share of sprawl (but not
nearly as bad as Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio). Austin is much more
centralized than other Texas cities and has a large bike culture.
Being close to central Austin is key for commuting. I commute year
round about 20 miles per day and it is very manageable. Being
originally from Boston where bicycles travel faster and more
efficiently than cars, it took me awhile to get used to the big
trucks, high speeds on surface streets, and 4 lane roads (take a look
at South Congress - ite reminds me of a New England turnpike). I think
the cycling in Austin has improved alot in the 10 years I have been
here. I see way more people on bikes on a daily basis than I did back
then.

Regards,

Sean

I am a long time Riv fan and recently became owner to one of the
Rambouillet demo bikes that Rivendell was parting with a few months
back. That is indeed my buddy Jeff Newberry in the Tour das Hugel
photo. Jeff is a hardcore brevet rider and a Heron/Hetchins and soon
to be custom Riv owner. I only know of a handful of actual Rivendell
owners in Austin, but I know plenty of "Rivendell-type" riders.

Clive,
Excellent blog. Very enjoyable and informative read. Really makes me
want to get back to England sometime (preferably on the bike). Also,
the few pictures of Boston (MA) made me homesick for the Boston area
(even with the snow and all - I've obviously been gone a long time).
That Tardis seems like a great way to transport a bike and it seems
the Quickbeam was certainly up to the task. Loved seeing the pictures
of the traidtional British pubs as well...mmm...pints...(cue Homer

Great news to hear! I completely agree on the Bosco bars. I never thought
I'd be riding bars like these, but after neck stenosis problems, these bars
have kept me riding! Great comfort and hand positions. Have put them on

[RBW] Re: Wrapping Bosco Handlebars

2014-06-16 Thread sean
I would say just wrap from the lever clamps down toward the stem. Leave the
cables exposed. I don't have any shifters in the way (mounted downtube) and
I didn't have to remove anything from the bars. Just started a little past
the lever clamp and wrapped down to about an inch/inch and a half from the
stem. Newbaums followed by a couple of coats of shellac. Makes for a nice
grip-able area and elegant too. Left the space near the stem for mounting
bell, headlight, etc.

[RBW] MUSA shorts question

2013-05-29 Thread sean
Hi Group,

Thinking of getting some MUSA shorts. Been on the fence for along time now,
but the summer weather is brutal down here in TX and thought maybe these
would provide some cool, lightweight relief. I'm not sure about sizing
though. I'm about 5'5"-5'6" with a pbh of 78. Short in the leg (28-29 in.
pants inseam). I wear a size 31 waist in Dickies pants and Carharrt shorts.
Could go either small or medium but I can't stand long (below the knee)
"shants"as I like to call them. I understand the MUSAs fit kind of baggy.
Any advice on the fit of these shorts would be geatly appreciated. Want to
get this right the first time around!

Thanks alot!

[RBW] Re: Neck Pain, and Upright Bars/Bosco's

2013-07-11 Thread sean
Apologies for my late arrival to this topic. I have just been dealing with
similar issues (stinosis in the C6-7) and have been off the bike for a few
weeks. Still in physical therapy and just starting to ride again in a
limited fashion while being ever so mindful of my position and posture on
the bike. I never in a million years thought I would be considering the
Bosco bars. But now I am interested. Being as upright as possible is
certainly taking the pressure off the nerves and, aside from moving to a
recumbent (gasp!), upright riding might be the position for me for the long
haul. Especially if it can keep me riding for many years to come! (Being
off the bike for 3 weeks has been tough!) Currently run an albatross bar on
my Big Dummy and may have to shorten the stem to pull it back even further.
My LHT currently has On-One Mary which I love (have mutliple sets) but
might need to retire these in favor of a Bosco. The Marys still put me a
little too far forward for comfort and for the foreseeable future
maintenance of this condition. Maybe the Boscos will do the trick? Or a
shorter stem with some Albas. Thanks for posting this and I hope you post a
long term report. Will most likely have some Noodles, Midges, Mary bars,
and others to move on to new owners in the near future.

Best,
Sean

[RBW] Sackville Backabike Bags

2015-02-27 Thread sean
Hello Riv group,

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the new Sackville
Backabike rear bags (panniers)? I'm curious about these but wonder how they
actually attach to a rear rack? Just using straps through the grommets? Any
review on how secure they are to the rack? These have peaked my interest,
but I am hesitant as I hate it when panniers aren't attached securely and
float around during a ride. I really like my Carradice Super C bags which
have a secure, ratchet attachment system but am looking to maybe throw some
Sackvilles into the mix. I love my Sackville shopsack and hope to add
something of similar quality.

Thanks for any insight!

Thanks for the insights Richard and Liesl. I'll be attaching the bags to a
Surly rear rack which is certainly stout and hardy. I've since moved the
Carradice panniers to the front and with the potential addition of the
Backabike bags, along with my Shopsack in the Wald and my Lowsaddle
Longflap in the rear I'll be fully loaded for groceries, camping,
commuting...well...anything for that matter. My LHT rig looks like a
similar setup to your custom, Liesl. Gotta love those Bosco bars!

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Rambouillet 50 cm complete (blue) - $1300

2012-08-19 Thread sean
Hello fellow Rivendellians,

My riding style and priorities have changed over the last couple of years.
Currently doing alot more kid and grocery hauling on the Big Dummy than
riding 200k's on this beautiful machine. So I am offering it up here.
Purchased from Riv and most of it is standard Riv build. Here are the specs:

Frame/fork: 50cm Rivendell Rambouillet (blue)
Headset: Shimano Ultegra
Stem: Nitto Technomic Deluxe
Handlebars: Nitto Noodle 41cm with tressostar shellacked cloth tape and
velox bar plugs
Brake levers: Shimano Tiagra w/ Tektro interrupter levers
Shifters: Dura Ace downtube (9 speed)
Brakes: Shimano Ultegra
Cranks: Sugino XD triple (170mm)
Front Der.: Shimano 105
Rear Der.: Shimano Ultegra
Hubs: Shimano 105
Tires: Panaracer Pasela (w/TG on rear)
Cassette: Shimano Ultegra 9 spd (I think, but could be 105)
Front bag: Sackville trunksack (small)
Front rack: Nitto Mark's Rack
Rear rack: Viva saddlebag support
Rims: 26". Not sure here. Came from Rivendell without stickers.Either way
the rims are classic Riv and have been great.
Bell: Crane

Pics are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85317282@N02/

I believe Riv still has the geometry chart somewhere on the site. I have an
old link to it I can send along. I am planning on keeping the Brooks saddle
and the Carradice Barley rear saddlebag (seen in the pictures). I'll also
keep the Look Keo pedals. So no saddle, pedals, or rear saddlebag included.

I checked with my local shop with regards to a professional pack and ship.
The quote was $200 for the complete bike without the racks/bag. I can try
to ship those separately for an additional fee or the shop can probably
send them for a total shipping cost of $225 (includes insurance). I am
attaching a few pics and will send along others.

So, cost would be $1300 for local pickup, $1500 for professional packing
and shipping (minus racks/bag) or probably $1525 including the racks and
bag.

This bike is a great randonneuring bike. Please let me know off list if
you're interested. Would love it to go to a good home and continue to serve
as a great brevet bike.

Would also consider trading for a like sized (48cm) Hunqapillar. Been
riding alot more dirt than pavement lately.

Another Albastache lover here! I've got them mounted on a Dirt Drop stem on

proper setup is key.

[RBW] Re: Matt from Crust - PLP Talks

2018-01-10 Thread sean
Yeah, I appreciate the ability of people to not take themselves too
seriously and just love bikes and what they're doing. Matt comes across
like a straight-up good guy. Agree on the Ultraromance interview as well.
Poppi seems like a much more down-to-earth person than I would have
imagined from Instagram (I don't get the whole appeal of Instagram anyway,
but maybe it's my age). Both of these guys are promoting the best things
about riding bikes and smart bike design and seem to be picking up the
torch that Rivendell lit long ago. The fact that someone can make bikes
that they (and their friends) want to ride and someone can make a "living"
bicycle touring is pretty amazing in and of itself.

Speaking of the towel rack, looking forward to seeing what this Crust shaka
bar is all about too.

Much like the mainstream industry cribbed from Grant/Riv, I suspect they'll
be doing the same from Matt/Crust.

[RBW] Re: Matt from Crust - PLP Talks

2018-01-11 Thread sean
I agree about the initial "inside joke" thing (probably because I just
can't stomach much of Instagram), but I came to realize it's not like that
at all. As the owner of a relatively new Crust romanceur, I can attest that
the stuff Matt is producing is top notch. The detail and finish (on a
production frame) is excellent and the ride quality fantastic. He also is
trying to produce more MUSA frames as well. I also appreciate the fact that
all these people ride and ride hard. I can't think of better, real-world
product testing. I mean, Matt and Goat have ridden all over the world
putting modified Surlys through the paces in the early days.

I feel drawn to Crust the same way I was drawn to Rivendell so many years
ago. Still lust after Rivs (especially customs), but Crust has captured
that same interest (built around disc brakes which, for me, are a
functional improvement in my daily cycling world). Wish I had waited for
the arrival of the Lightning Bolt. That frameset looks amazing with the
raw, clear-coated fillet brazing.

[RBW] Re: Austin Tx cycling and Bobish shops

2018-03-09 Thread sean
This coming week will be a bit insane with SXSW going on. Lots of traffic
and crowds. Plenty of good riding however outside of the downtown circus.
For Bobish shops:

The Peddler
CycleEast (already mentioned)
Eastside Pedal Pushers
Bicycle Sport Shop (major dealer, but has some Bobish stuff and cool
mechanics/staff)

When in South Austin:

BikeAlot (easily the best bike shop in South Austin and Brad is a master of
Rivish/Bobish builds).

Enjoy Austin.

[RBW] Re: An even fatter (F)atlantis!

Mark,
you and Pondero have got to have the best looking Atlantai I've ever seen.
The build definitely makes that frameset (which is already impressive) even
more impressive and versatile. Wish I had to coin to add an Atlantis to the
stable. My LHT seems a bit of a journeyman in comparison.

Beautiful rig.

[RBW] Re: Bags for small bike owners (48cm Hunqs, 47cm Sams, Atlanti, etc.)

2015-04-24 Thread sean
I used to ride a 50cm Rambouillet and used a Viva saddlebag support for my
Carradice lowsaddle longflap. Kept the bag off the rear tire nicely. It
mounts to the seatpost and I'm thinking it may be smaller than the
Carradice Bagman support.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 51cm Soma San Marcos or 54cm Rambouillet Frameset

2017-03-01 Thread sean
Depending on your price point, Alex's Cycle in Japan still has some smaller
size Rambouillet frames.
https://alexscycle.com/collections/randonneur-frames/products/rivendell-rambouillet-frame-front-fork-1
$1400 isn't bad for a new Toyo-built Ram with free shipping (compared to
Riv's frame costs nowadays). As a former Rambouillet owner and current San
Marcos owner (51cm no less), I can attest to both bikes possessing
excellent ride characteristics. Definitely prefer the SM's 650b wheels
though. Thinking if you're looking at a 51cm San Marcos, you could search
for a 52cm Ram as well as the 54cm.

Good luck in your search.

[RBW] Quickbeam inquiry

2018-11-27 Thread sean
Hello fellow Rivendellians,

Quick question on the last run of Quickbeams (silver color with caliper
brakes and mid-fork rack braze-ons) - I am perusing old geo charts on the
interwebs and I can't tell if Riv actually made a 51cm in this silver run.
51cm is my magic number and I currently have a San Marcos in 51cm that is a
great fit. I think Riv began spec'ing the smaller Quickbeams with 650B
wheels back around 2009? Does anyone recall this and if they still produced
the smaller size 51cm prior to shifting to the Simple One?

I can look through all my old Riv Readers and catalogues, but I figured
this may be a faster approach,

Thanks,
Sean

Re: [RBW] Re: Carradice Super C Pannier question

2019-03-04 Thread sean
Hi John,

I use Super C's on a daily basis and can't "wax" on enough about them (get
it? :) I have both the mini/universal front panniers and the rear (large)
panniers. These bags are bomb proof, look great with wear, and keep the
rain out. I have never had a problem with losing anything out of the
smaller, rear pockets. Usually I carry tubes in there, water bottles, or
bombers of beer when I'm grocery shopping. The two large rear panniers can
each swallow an entire 12-pack box of Topo Chico (glass bottles) without
any problem. And I have room to stack other sundries on top. Grocery
shoppers are shocked when they see me stuffing these large boxes into my
bags. The bags can even be overstuffed as well since there is ample room on
the webbing straps by just adjusting the placement of the fastex buckle. The
top straps (where the "carry webbing" is) also can be adjusted to cinch
down flat items across the top of the bags. As you can probably tell, I
routinely grocery shop with these formidable bags.

The "new" system of hooks is a VAST improvement over the older ratcheting
system. It basically involves slotting the provided spacers (for different
diameter rack tubes) into the hooks and using the newer spring-mounted
latch as the 3rd securing point to the rack. The lower anti-sway bar is
easy to adjust and together these work great to keep the bags secure while
also enabling easy removal.

I love SJS and shipping /cost time has never bothered me, you could try
BikeShopHub in Tucson:
https://www.bikeshophub.com/product-category/carradice-bags/carradice-panniers
but
will pay more.

Woops, it looks you've already purchased from SJS. Well done! You're gonna
love these bags.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carradice Super C Pannier question

2019-03-06 Thread sean
Hi John,

The outside front pockets can easily fit a wallet. phone, keys. However, I
wouldn't recommend storing those things in such a vulnerable place (low to
the ground, near the wheel, kind of out of line of sight - might miss if
things pop out).

The front panniers are great but the base is indeed smaller. You can
probably cram some binders in there, but not an optimum fit. Much better
for soft goods (clothes, loaves of bread, etc)

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne at Paris Brest Paris

2023-09-27 Thread Sean Keesler
Hey, that's me! ;)
Yes, it's my bike of choice for sure. I took it into the Adirondacks loaded
with a basket and rear panniers just before PBP for a week. It can do
almost anything I ask of it.
My others are a Bianchi from the 80s (that I sorta restored and take to
Florida in the winters) and a Fuji Sportif endurance bike that would also
have gotten the job done.
I don't make a big fuss about the bike when making these vignettes. There
are so many people talking about the tool that I figure I'll leave that to
them. It turns out a LOT of people also filmed their PBP adventure!

I think 44cm noodles is right at the minimum of what I'd consider running a
fanny on. On my 42 noodles, the bag fits with space, but I definitely
notice it's there, and there is some rub on my fingers if I wrap them
around the ramps. Also, the side pockets are very finicky with 42s,
couldn't say how they'd do on 44s but they're almost worthless with 42s.

Re: [RBW] Re: Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-06-17 Thread Sean Ryan
I had some ticking/clicking on an older pair of aluminum nitto handlebars
and i took care of it by laying the bike and applying oil to the bars at
the edge of the sleeve. The idea is to let the oil make its way down
between the bars and the sleeve. After letting it soak/penetrate for a
little while i wiped down the bars and they have been silent ever since.
if the noise is coming from the handlebar/sleeve area this may help.

Every bicycle I had from 1975 on was 700c. There was no way I was
going to go 650b. I ordered a Sam in 2015, and Will set me up with a 55
 Cm
frame even though I did not mention my aversion to 650b. The SOH of that
 frame was listed at 83.3.

My Sam felt just a little “tall” for me. Sliding off the seat forward
at a stop took some getting used to. I did adapt, however, and now the
 Sam
feels like it is part of me when I ride.

Last year I got a 51 Cm Homer (650b), to see if a smaller frame would
be better. It is MUCH too small. Don’t do that.

So I’m with J L. Call Riv, and believe what they set you up with. If
they try to set you up with a frame that takes 650b, and you don’t want
 650b, buy something else.

As for another model similar to a Sam, look for a Soma Saga. A
Platypus is also listed as “a country bike”, but it feels nothing like a
Sam, while the Saga does. I do think a good used Sam from the 2014 - 2017
era would be a good fit, and the 54 Cm probably would, too. If you slide
off the seat, be sure to land on your toes. ;-)

[RBW] Re: WTB: 58cm Saluki Frame or Bike

2021-04-30 Thread Sean Steinle
This may be too many hoops to jump through, but last I checked with Riv,
they had a Saluki headbadge and decals they were willing to sell me if I
ever got my frame repainted. Since it's the same bike, it's not like it's
cheating, you'd have as much of a genuine Saluki as any of the others.

[RBW] FS: Berthoud Aspin Open Saddle - Brown and Selle Anatomica X1 - Oxblood Copper

2021-05-21 Thread Sean B.
Hello,

Looking to get rid of some of my extra saddles. Buyer pays shipping of
their choice (USPS, UPS, ect). Both saddles are in great shape.

$190 - Berthoud Aspin Open Saddle - Brown. It's been ridden just under 150
miles. Treated once on both sides with Obenaufs.

$90 - Selle Anatomica X1 - Oxblood Copper. Ridden once, so lets say 20ish
miles ridden. Never treated.

I use one of the mini protectors from Blue Lug to keep my bar end shifters
from scratching the TT . They also make full top tube protectors too.
