Hi Ron,

I'm not in need of a decaleur right now, but that Mercian is so beautiful!

Dave,
Yes, winter cycling is as pleasing as autumn cycling. Your Gunnar seems to
be a perfect machine to ride on dirt road!

Nick,
That's an unbelievably beautiful image! I can almost feel crisp air and
dazzling sunlight.
I believe that it was very quiet out there?

Randy,
Glad that you were able to ride. I assume that winter in Wisconsin is very
harsh.
Your photo, like Nick's, makes me think that it was very quiet.

Joe,
Color of your bike looks very different in two photos.
Both look great, but especially beautiful in the morning (evening?) light!

So many great images!

Brian,
Spectacular view, and oh, those clouds pattern in the sky!
And your Sam is so cool; to my eyes it's perfect.

Paul,
Thank you, I'm glad to know that you enjoy my photos.
Looks like Virginia is a very beautiful place, I can almost feel crisp air
and sweet smell of dry trees.

Leah,
Wow, blizzard to green in one week?
It gave you a chance to ride your beautiful Platypus, so it was a good
thing, I believe.
Please post more photos!

Eric,
Was it dawn or evening? Either case, beautiful photo, as always. Looks like
you had a very nice New Year's Day!
Paul's and Eric's photos make me wonder - doesn't Virginia have much
snowfall?

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-08 Thread Takashi
Leah,
Thank you for the video, your Platypus with lots of lights is so fabulous!
It sure looks like Michigan is a tough place to ride bikes when there is
heavy snowfall.
As someone commented cross country skiing might be fun.
Here's a photo from last year:
https://flic.kr/p/2mZYVer

Paul,
Thank you. It's natural that higher, mountainous places get more snowfall.
West Virginia has more mountains? Now I understand why John Denver sang
"West Virginia, Mountain Mama..."

Dave,
I agree with Eric, your photos are great!
" Sorry for the number of photo"
No, not at all. The more photos the better.
I scrolled through your Instagram posts, they're all beautiful!

John,
The monochrome-ish photo is a genuine "Winter Photo."
Maybe it's the high latitude that makes daytime shorter than in most places?

Eric,
It's same in Japan that places where there is little snowfall don't have
infrastructure to handle snow.
Two inches of snow turns Tokyo into a chaos.

Thank you Garth.
Yes, it was indeed "Midnight Sun." When I looked up and stared at the moon
it was almost blinding.

Dorothy, riding in winter rain is much tougher than in snow IMHO.
And your Clem looks like the embodiment of what Grant was thinking when he
designed them.

Jamin, they're beautiful photos!
Those steep mountains look very much like what we have here in Japan. Looks
like quite a workout if you want to enjoy the view.

Ted, I'm sorry to hear that. And that's definitely a Winter Ride Foto!

Piaw, I was able to see photos without an Amazon account. That collapsed
car!
I agree that riding a closed road is pleasant.

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Summer Riding Photos 2023

2023-06-30 Thread Takashi
Thank you John.
But, you know, summer in Japan is more severe than in Canada, and "Rinse"
isn't easy here since rivers in Japan (https://flic.kr/p/2oz6bYx) are
basically more treacherous than those in Canada, so mileage will be smaller
in summer.
I'll post pictures when I go ride.

Scott, handlebar is Albastache, and the stem is Nitto Dirt Drop 10cm.
Riv recommends that Moustache bar raised high
(https://www.rivbike.com/pages/nitto-stem-comparison), so I raised my
Albastache high.
Climbing is equally as easy as with drop bars, and feels very natural when
descending curvy roads, maybe most natural among the bars I've used so far.
(I've used Noodle, Albatross, Bosco, and Bullmoose.)
First I had the bar ends pointed slightly downward, and I suffered hand
numbness. I tilted it so the bar ends point very slightly UPward, and the
numbness is gone, though it seems counter intuitive.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-02-08 Thread Takashi
Ted,
The place I took the photo is about 5-minute ride from my room.
Snow is mostly disappeared now.
Snow bank indeed makes road narrower, but I ride mostly on non-busy back
roads, so no problem.

Slin, I'm pretty sure that your wife will love that beautiful Platypus!

Eric Marth,
Good ride with friends AND seeing an owl very close. What's not to like??
And photos in your latter post are also beautiful. It doesn't look like
winter except for the 3rd photos with ice in it.

Eric Norris,
I second Paul's comment that your photos make me feel like I'm there. It's
always very interesting to see historical buildings during a ride.

Paul, thanks for photo of Eric's Hillborne. That's indeed a gigantic bag!

Stephen, film photos have different atmosphere from digital ones, and yours
are so great!
I also live in a tiny apartment room with 2 bikes in it. I'm interested in
A Homer Hilsen but no more room.

Ryan, riding in strong wind (headwind or tailwind) must have been very cold.
But looking at that blue sky, I also would have hopped on my bike.

Richard, that bike looks like a perfect choice for having fun on snow!

Dave, great photos as always! Monochrome image highlights interesting
patterns of tree shadows.

Will, although there are no snow in the photo, it surely looks like a very
cold day!

On Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 9:31:40 PM UTC-5 Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
wrote:
It’s winter here in Michigan and business at the local bike shop is slow.
The shop had a brilliant idea to host a class for a small number of
students to teach basic bicycle maintenance/mechanics. Students were to
bring their own bikes, which was wonderful because we would learn to work
on what we actually have. Our teacher was quietly brilliant, extremely
patient, and, well, dreamy. (I would love to set him up with my friend from
my women’s club ride and then be in their wedding. Unable to ascertain his
marital status without committing harassment, I am still in the throes of
scheming.)

I digress!

He taught us how the shop gives each bike a once-over. It’s an M shape,
starting at the front wheel, going up to the bars, down to the pedal/chain
ring, up to the saddle and down to that rear wheel. From there we moved on
to wheel truing, derailleurs and shifters, and finally, brakes.

There were three of us in the class; one aluminum Trek with flat bars, a
steel Jamis that had been ridden hard on the trainer in covid, and my
raspberry Platypus. We all had V brakes. They had indexed shifting and I
had friction. When examining our bikes, we/he found several problems
(though not on the Platypus because I drag that bike in for every little
thing) that we then observed our teacher fix. I now know what a loose
headset sounds like (the Trek). Though, ironically, if you hit my front
wheel to elicit the sound, the German mirror will respond with an identical
sound. There are some skills that I still see best left to the experts -
wheel truing, for instance. I audibly gasped when he took after the spokes
of a wheel to mess them up for demonstration. I am leaving my new spoke
wrench in the packaging because no good can come from that thing.

I am still not brave enough to do a lot with tools to my bike, but I’m
working on it. I like that some of the mystery was taken out of it all and
I can see how parts work. Do I dare disclose here some of what I thought
beforehand? Oh, fine. I thought a wheel out of true meant they had to bend
a rim back into place. I had NO idea spokes were the culprit, nor did I
know you could adjust them. 😬 And so on and so forth.

Our mechanic was so encouraging and told us we should experiment at home -
don’t worry, he assured us, you won’t break anything. But I wonder if he
will feel the same when I show up with my collection of redundant
Rivendells; pieces and parts left over and collected after rolling around
on my garage floor. “I have been fixing my bike and now it won’t work.”

Anyway, it’s a small step of self-betterment and I’ll keep walking that
direction. I’m sure some of you out there can relate.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-02-27 Thread Takashi
Paul, I know very little about "old" bikes, and I've never known about
Austro Daimler bikes. Yours looks like a very meticulous made beautiful
frame. Is it made of stainless?
Also, your friend's Homer looks very cool & clean.

Dave, love that mirror-like pond; it's as if you see sky both over your
head and underneath you.

Luke, that looks like an "easier" ride compared to photos in your previous
posts. SF area seems to be a great place with various terrains.

Stephanie, Grant would no doubt approve your use of the bike. Those blue
Sackvilles make mere grocery rides joyous, don't they?

Russel, I agree with Rich that your bike looks great. Now I'm thinking
about which of my bike I should use green bartapes and yellow cables...

Eric, so there are two airfields nearby? I seldom have chance to look at
airplanes up close, that must be fun.

Re: [RBW] Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-03-21 Thread Takashi
Paul in Dallas, judging from trees and grasses in your photo, Texas seems
to be in spring already.

Josia, that looks like a tough ride! Your Gus must be a perfect bike for
such conditions. Good luck finding your ideal setup.

Richard, another Gus photo on snow! It should be a fun bike to ride in any
season.

John, that's a beautiful place. It's surprising that there is so little
snow even in Canada.

David, I understand that you are looking forward to spring, but your bike
looks "at home" on snow, in the second photo.

Kai, looks like a chilly ride. Building Rosco with studded tires sounds
like a good idea.

Eric, that must have been a very nice ride despite headwinds. Both photos
are beautiful.

I don't think we'll have any more snow this season. Like Ted says, maybe
time to start a Spring Photo thread?

Re: [RBW] Tech question: Rene Herse pulley-style brake yoke -- what am I doing wrong?

2024-09-05 Thread Takashi
I've used Rene Herse yokes and Dia Compe cheap yokes.
It seems that with Rene Herse yoke, when there's some oil or grease on the
cable, the cable pops out more easily than with Dia Compes.
I've had same issue, so cleaned both yoke and cable with degreaser
carefully, and no problem since then.

You have gorgeous trees near you. Must be fun to ride around in town in
this season.
I can imagine drivers complaining about fallen blossoms sticking all over
their cars!

Franklyn,
I can't tell if they're cherries either, but it must be a joy to admire
them while riding. Beautiful.

Tirebiter, Steven, and Roberta,
Glad to know that you are enjoying this thread.

[RBW] Re: Center pull/Herse Brake Help

2020-05-30 Thread Takashi
Hi Alex

I don't have bikes with centerpulls, but I had squealing issues with my RH
cantilever brakes.
Long story short, I swapped from salmon pads to black pads (using same
holders), and after several times of riding, they ceased to squeal.
I've read (in comment section of RH blog, I think) that another user also
switched from salmon to black and squealing problem was solved.
Also it seems that there is compatibility issue between rims and pads, so
if you have another rear wheel, you might try putting it on your Homer and
see how it goes.

Out of curiosity, did you have brake mounts brazed on your Homer?

2020-07-13 Thread Takashi
Hi John

Here's the Hunqapillar page I found on Wayback Machine. I hope the link
works.
Hunqapillar page on Riv website
<https://web.archive.org/web/20111031165706/http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hunqapillar.htm>

I don't know how Wayback Machine works; frames should have been grey/red at
the time this page was archived, but pictures shown here are the new green
ones.
Anyway, the 7th paragraph says "Every bar in the world is suitable for the
Hunqapillar, so put on what you like."
And if you scroll down (a bit above geo chart), they say:
"Which handlebar?
This is the hardest decision you'll make, because every option makes sense."

I remembered these words well because I read this page over and over when I
was contemplating which model I should buy.

I've never head about Cleverhood. It looks like a good poncho. Thank you,

Mont Bell, and shoes covers also by Mont Bell*.*

Cleverhood's cheaper poncho is way shorter than Grundens (about 110cm), so
you will need to wear rain pants, I think.

quasi-monochrome, and this time they're colorful again.
Both look great! Your bombadil, complete with fenders, looks quite at home
in the woods.

Forget about chainsaw motor, let alone electric bikes!
Rintendo in Osaka, Japan has made a steam-engine powered bike.

I'm skeptical about its cost-efficiency, though.
The website is in Japanese, but I put the description in DeepL Translator,
and it did a good translation.

Jason, the route looks very beautiful with lots of green, but I'm sure
you'll have fun riding the same route covered with snow.
I'm curious about the small tunnel. Did you go through it?
Several years ago I came upon a similarly small tunnel; I went through it
to find out that it lead to a rice paddy, so I assume it was a private path
excavated by the owner of the rice paddy.

2021-02-13 Thread Takashi
Also coming in late.
Wool socks and hiking boots (waterproof ones) worked fine for me if
temperature is down to about freezing point.
Colder than that, or if I'm riding very long descent, I wear battery heated
socks.
When I went long-ish ride last December, I brought battery heated gloves
and socks, just in case. I didn't need socks, but used the gloves.

2013-08-26 Thread Takashi
Hi Christopher
Japan is a very beautiful country. I think you will enjoy the visit.

Can you speak Japanese? I am a native speaker of Japanese, so I have no
idea whether or not traveling in Japan is easy for nonnatives.
Maybe someone in this list can give you advice about that.
Rural areas are more pleasant to visit than urban areas (for cyclists, that
is), but there is less chance to meet someone who speaks English in rural
areas.

I think I can give you some advice about eastern part of Japan. I seldom go
to west Japan, so I don't know much about west.
Do you have any idea when you will visit?

[RBW] Gorgeous Autumn

2013-10-27 Thread Takashi
Hi all,
Trees are becoming very colorful here, so I thought I'd share it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10511863834/

I came home from work by noon on Friday, so I had 2.5 days of weekend.
I thought about camping, but typhoon was approaching near here on Saturday.
(Actually, typhoon was gone and weather got fine by Saturday noon.)
So I figured that I'd just go half-day ramble 3 times.
I rode my Moulton on Friday, Bike Friday on Saturday (confusing), and
Hunqapillar on Sunday.

A set of photos to prove that I had wonderful 2.5-day-weekend:

Michael,

I've added location information to the photo:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10511863834/
If you click where it says "Agematsu-machi, Nagano Prefecture, JP," it will
show a map.
I hope it helps.

Nagano is an inland prefecture with many mountains, and elevation is high
mostly.
So I guess that Nagano is equivalent to Colorado State in USA, maybe?

[RBW] Re: Any metal fenders have QR like longboards?

2014-02-13 Thread Takashi
Looks like there is a hardware, with which you can use SKS-type stays for
metal fenders.
Here is a blog post by Velocraft, a Japanese bicycle shop:
http://www.c-w-s.sakura.ne.jp/cws02/2014/02/velocraft_3.html
(The article is written in Japanese, but you can get idea from photos.)
So, with these hardware and stays, I guess that you can use QR with metal
fenders.

Regarding posts by Bill and Pudge, I put front fender stays on mid-fork
eyelet.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10667049784/
I didn't do that for safety; larger front rack (not the rack in the photo)
interfered with fender stays, so I had to move stays to somewhere else.

[RBW] Re: What's involved switching to road levers?

2014-04-07 Thread Takashi
Patrick,

Are you going to use Dia-Compe levers?
Dia-Compe 204 levers require special shaped ferrules, which look like this:
http://www.cb-asahi.co.jp/item/02/00/item1050352.html

Or you can buy this adjuster and use it on 204 levers:
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/brakes/parts/dia-compe-cable-adjuster-for-gc202-and-dc204-levers.html

If you buy Gran Compe 202 levers, they are equipped with above adjusters,
so you don't need to buy additional parts.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar As "True" Mountain Bike?

2013-12-07 Thread Takashi
When I was climbing on unpaved bumpy road, I had to pedal in half-rising
posture.
Otherwise, my body bumping up & down with my bike made me go much slower.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/10327499973/
I imagine that full suspension bike would have made it easier by letting me
pedal while sitting on saddle.
That was the only case so far that I wanted suspension on my Hunqapillar.
I'd walk anyway when it's technical, since I'm not skilled.

When I rode on snow, cantilever brakes did not stop the bike very well.
Disc brakes are better for that, I think.

Here's a picture of my truemountainbikeified Hunq:

[RBW] Re: Down tube friction shfiters and 9-cog cassettes

2014-02-05 Thread Takashi
I use Gran Compe downtube friction (ratchet) shifters with Shimano XT
10-speed cog.
So far I have not noticed any problems with them.
It's my only bike with friction shifters, so I don't know whether it's good
or bad compared to fewer speed cogs.

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Swappers Anonymous

2014-08-25 Thread Takashi
Hi Avery
I am happy to see another cockpit swapper!
I swap handlebars very often.

Noodle on Dirt Drop 8cm stem
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/14130158365/>
Albatross on Nitto Technomic 10cm stem, with Dia Compe hand rests
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8160613734/>
Bullmoose, with Dia Compe hand rests

Bosco on Nitto Technomic 13cm stem, with Dia Compe hand rests
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/14771364047/>

Like you, I think that drop bar looks best, and climbing is easiest with
drop bar.
Adding Dia Compe hand rests on other three types makes climbing much easier
though.

I think Boscos look best when on bikes with fatter tires.
BOM by Brian <https://www.rivbike.com/product-p/staff18.htm> on Riv website
looks awesome.

On longer rides, Albas and Boscos are not as comfortable as I have expected.
Not only my buttocks become sore, but also my hands become numb.
It's somewhat surprising, since I have expected that being upright takes
stresses away from my hands.
I still like both of them because riding upright allows me to look at
sceneries more.
Also, descending not-so-bumpy roads is more fun with upright bars.

Bullmoose is much comfortable than I assumed.
I bought it for relatively short, rough-terrain rides. I haven't done
really long rides with it, but I think I can do them.

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-11 Thread Takashi
Hi Bill,

As I've mentioned, I have 54cm Hunq, my PBH is 85cm, and I am 175cm tall.
Saddle height (center of BB to top of saddle) is 75cm.

Picture of my Hunq with Noodle and Dirt Drop 8cm stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8096995569/
The stem has an effect horizontal extension of 6 or 7 centimeters, and I
feel comfortable with them.
At first I had Dirt Drop 10cm stem; it made me feel a bit too stretched.

I like handlebar to be high, which makes stem stick out pretty high, which
in my opinion is not very cool-looking.
I could have gone for 58cm frame, but then handlebar would have been too
far away.
Maybe you can find a stem with even shorter extension (5cm), but currently
there is no such stem in Riv website.

Bosco-bar with 13cm-extension stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/14771364047/
I like to ride bolt upright when on Bosco- or Alba- equipped bike, so again
stem is sticking out high.

Bullmoose:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8690416089/
You can set this bar pretty high without showing much stem.

I ride mostly on paved roads, sometimes unpaved roads.
There are not many rideable trails around here (in Japan, "trail" usually
means something like this
<https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8740525489/in/photostream/>, or
something even worse), so I don't have have many chances to ride on trails.

Anyway, you can ride wherever you like on your Hunq with whichever
handlebar you have.
When I found rideable trail on my way, both Bullmoose and Albatross bars
worked fine.

Good luck!
Takashi

Great! Your writeup makes me grin, too.

As for rear rack, it seems like your bike can be equipped with Nitto R-14
Top Rack.
Or maybe Mark's Rack:

You might need longer stays (Riv sells them).

[RBW] Re: Atlantis s24p shakedown ride

2014-06-17 Thread Takashi
Looks like an awesome adventure. Makes me want to go for S24O.
Yes, the dirty Atlantis looks very cool!

I think that the front rack you have is designed to be mounted on the lower
eyelet of the front fork-end.
They are designed for 700C bikes, and most 700C bikes have only one eyelet
for each front fork-end.
I have a same rack, and I first mounted it on higher eyelet like you do,
and then moved it to lower eyelet.
It looked like a small change, but I could handle the bike lot better.

[RBW] Re: Homer's first proper, if not long, ride

2014-07-10 Thread Takashi
Beautiful bike and beautiful sceneries!
Sky-blue frame and purple bartapes go really well together.

I have used Noodles and Nitto Randos on my Bike Friday. I prefer Noodles.
Bike Friday and Riv bikes are both designed to be able to put handlebars
high, so I find upward sweep of Rando bars to be unnecessary.
Noodle's backsweep makes me comfortable.

[RBW] Introduction

2013-04-25 Thread Takashi
Hi all,
I have been following this group for a while, and I am posting for the
first time to introduce myself.
I bought Hunqapillar in last April, and I'm enjoying it very much.

I also enjoy reading posts in this group. Lots of nice ride reports and
informations.
I might not post frequently though, since I am not a native speaker of
English, and I have to work hard to read/write in English.

[RBW] Re: Introduction

2013-04-26 Thread Takashi

Thank you all for warm welcome.
In Japan, places of various climate, various landscape, various manners and
customs, etc. are packed in relatively small area.
Also, there is a railroad network that covers most of the country.
So you can go ride in various beautiful & interesting places pretty easily.
(Though having to pack your bike is troublesome:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/7308954706/ )

Peter,
Yes, they are compound curve fenders by Woodys Fenders.
I like them so much that all my 3 bikes have wooden fenders now.

Brian,
I have also been admiring photos of your Hunq and your harlequin wraps on
Flickr.
I like to swap handlebars depending on where I ride.
My Hunq has shifters mounted on downtube, so I can swap bars in about 10
minutes.

Thank you all for warm welcome!

Larry,
If you mean the silver shiny one, it's made by Meqix.

I won't recommend it though; it was broken after I used it a few times.

[RBW] Re: Packing a bike for train/bus travel

2013-05-01 Thread Takashi
Patrick,
Sorry for being late.
I'm trying to write about packing bike, but it's hard to describe about
bicycle (even in Japanese), and I have no idea when I can finish it.

Meanwhile, you might read the following article, in which a friend of mine
has written in his blog about packing his bike.
It's written in Japanese, but photos will give you an idea.
http://cycling451.blogzine.jp/blog/2009/11/post_1175.html
His bike has small wheels, but it's not a folding bike, so packing it is
not different from regular bike.
I remove fork from frame, but he doesn't, which allows him to pack quickly
(less than 10 minutes), but he cannot pack his bike as small as mine.

But you had better contact railroad companies first, since some companies
allow bicycle with minimal disassembling, as Jim points out.
Or not disassembling at all, as seen in "Rivendell People" video. (Starting
at 22:00)

[RBW] Re: Introduction

2013-05-23 Thread Takashi
Hello Michael,

I live in Iida City, Nagano, and I will soon be moving to Kiso County in
Nagano.
There will be various affairs accompanying the move, so I won't be able to
have many days to join you, unfortunately.

Shikoku is far away from here, and I have never toured there.
I have heard that it is a very beautiful area. I am pretty sure that you
will have a great time. Be sure to post photos!

By the way, I often visit the following website. Has nice photos.
http://www.k5.dion.ne.jp/~strida/Photos/Tosa/T-index.htm
If you can read Japanese, articles are very interesting, too. Touring in
hilly Shikoku with fully-loaded STRIDA!
If you love touring and love your bike, you can do just about anything.

[RBW] Re: 29er tires for a Hunqapillar

I use Rock 'n Road, and they are great.
When I want fatter ones, I use Maxxis CrossMark.

They are very good on gravel roads and hard-pack trails, and not bad on
paved road.

You might need levers with built-in quick release, depending on how you

Or, in-line adjuster / quick releaser might help you.

[RBW] Re: Drill brake bridge for fender?

2014-12-19 Thread Takashi
Honjo makes this small thing that lets you mount rear fender on a bike
without threaded rear brake bridge:

[RBW] Re: Drill brake bridge for fender?

2014-12-20 Thread Takashi
ted,
I haven't seen it in person (Honjo products are hard to find even in
Japan), but I found the following website:
https://www.cyclo.co.jp/webshop/shop.cgi?pw=&category=40-4

2nd photo from the top shows the hardware.
It says
horizontal hole (for brake) : 6mm
threaded hole (for fender) : 5mm
thickness : 8mm
height : 14mm

jeffrey,
That's a clever idea!

[RBW] Re: HUNQAPILLAR tire clearance experience, a subsequent design curiosity & belated NEW BIKE DAY!

2015-02-04 Thread Takashi
I have a 1st generation Hunqapillar.
Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires (29x2.25) fit fine.
They measure about 55mm on my rims (my rims are 19mm wide).
If you use wider rims, tires may rub your frame/fork.
I have read somewhere that newer Hunqapillar has more tire clearance than
old ones. I don't remember where I read it.

Jim,
I live in Nagano Prefecture. Not as cold as in Hokkaido, but cold enough to
keep most cyclists in their houses.

[RBW] Re: Winter Welcome Wagon [Share Your Pics]

2015-02-08 Thread Takashi
I have been super lazy for months, but finally got around to installing a
new pair of fenders on my Hunqapillar.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/sets/72157650693988781/

With my winter tires (Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro 29 x 2.25), clearances are
small, so I had to file off some bits from front fender, and also cut the
rear fender into two.
I am pretty much satisfied with the result, but maybe I will have to ride
slow at first to make sure that it's safe to ride with knobby tires and
fenders.

[RBW] Re: Tires for my Hunq

2015-10-08 Thread Takashi
I recently bought Continental Race King (Race Sport) 29x2.0.
I will write about them on another thread (tire test and impression thread)
sometime, but I don't have time now.

To be brief, their tread pattern is more off-road-oriented than Thunder
Burt, thus less smooth (but acceptable) on pavement.
They seem to roll well both on- and off-pavement.

Some on-line reviews say that they are vulnerable, some say durable.
I have yet to judge their durability.

[RBW] Re: Best rear support rack for med sadlesack?

2015-10-14 Thread Takashi
I use Mark's Rack and Saddlesack Medium.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/15730742765/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/15887587466/

I cut off the tombstone since I personally prefer the bag to be attached to
seatpost and not to tombstone, but if you don't like the bag rubbing your
thighs, just use the rack with tombstone.
I have no issues so far, but if you put too heavy things in your
saddlesack, the portion of the bag where it is not supported by the rack
may sag, since surface of Mark's Rack is smaller than Saddlesack Medium.

I think you will have difficulty mounting Nitto NR-21 on Hunq, since the
hole on seatstay bridge is drilled for fenders, not brakes.

By the way, Bike Friday's Folding Rear Rack works pretty well, though you
will have to buy couple pieces of metal stays at your local hardware store
to attach the rack to seatstays.
