[RBW] Will Schwalabe Marathon HS 420 - 700x45 - fit on a 59cm Homer Hilsen?

2013-10-02 Thread Scot Brooks
Hopefully not a useless comment, but here goes. I THINK the clearance on a AHH
is the same as a Sam H. and I run the 45c marathons on my 60cm Sam no problem.
In fact, I can squeeze fenders in there if I fiddle a lot.

[RBW] FS in Seattle: 62cm Soma Double Cross, pretty Riv-ish

2013-11-12 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi everyone, I'm selling my bike through the shop I work at to fund some more
stuff for my Sam H. It's got some Riv boxes ticked, including a 34-34
reasonable low gear, high drop bars, Jim Thill built Delgado Cross/LX wheels,
Marathon Racers, Deore RD, and some other good stuff. If you're interested,
I'll send over photos and a parts list but you could also pop in to 2020 Cycle
and check it out. List is $1201 but you guys get $100 off. No shipping, bummer.

[RBW] FS: SON28/LX/Dyad wheelset, B&M lights, Nitto Big Front Rack

2014-02-19 Thread Scot Brooks
The Son28/LX/Dyad wheelset is 32h front and 36h (135mm spacing) rear. It's
been ridden, but there's no detectable rim wear. Both wheels are hand-built
and 700c. *$450*

The lights for sale are the Premium Cyo T Senso Plus (newest Cyo, 80 lux)
*$70*, and the Toplight Line Plus BrakeTec (rack mount, gets brighter when
you slow down quickly) *$35*

The Nitto front rack is the same one Riv sells, the big one. It's in great
shape. I'll sell it with the adapter tabs I had made, which allow it to
perfectly reach the high braze-ons on my 60cm Sam. *$140*

Shipping will be true cost, or none if you pick-up in Seattle.

Hi Eric,
The total mileage is unknown but small; I have only a few blocks commute to
work and Seattle has been pretty dry (for us) this winter. In fact, this winter
is the first either wheel has seen. The rear wheel is the older of the two at
almost a year old, maybe 10 months. The front wheel is only a couple of months
old. I was planning on getting some new photos tomorrow. Oh, and why am I
selling? To help fund a new bike project I've got in the works, and I've
already got a spare set of wheels set aside for Sam.

Hi Cecily,
Here's what
flickrhad to
offer for the comparison. They really are remarkably similar, even
near-as-makes-no-difference. We carry both in the shop where I work and I
really can't tell if there's a difference when I hold the two up to each
other. I've got the Somas on my bike and they're great, but nothing like
the Nitto in terms of finish. Not even close.

[RBW] Re: Edelux - Blug Post

2014-03-13 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Eric,
We mess around with modifying Nitto racks kind of a lot at the shop I
occasionally work at, mostly for the purpose of dialing in the fitment or
getting things super level. It's way easy, or at least for the guys who do
the actual welding and brazing (not me). Moot point really, since I guess
it's not exactly an "easy" solution from the standpoint of a customer
buying a fancy rack, spending more money to have it modified, and then more
money to have it painted or powdercoated.

[RBW] What's the real San Marcos tire/fender combo clearance?

2014-05-04 Thread Scot Brooks
It's a bit vague on the Riv site and on the Soma site, so I'm hoping to
hear from those who've actually tried the combo I'd like (it's what's
holding me up on ordering a frame). Fingers crossed, it can squeeze some
Jack Browns and 45mm aluminum fenders. Does it work? Worst case, I'd be
happy with Ruffy Tuffys and 37mm aluminum fenders, so if that's the combo
you run and it's good-but-tight I'd love to hear from you too.

I would call Riv and ask them, but this is a case where I'd be ordering
wholesale from Merry Sales through my shop and I don't want to take up
their time on a non-direct sale. For the record, I bought my Sam fair and
square direct from Riv so I am a bonified customer, just not for this
theoretical bike.

[RBW] Re: Paul thumbies/ shimano bar end shifting problems

2014-05-04 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Michael,
My guess is that you've set them up in the wrong "starting position".
Happens all the time, so no biggie. Try starting fresh with everything
unscrewed and the indexing limit washer in whatever position you like. Then
try clicking through without actually screwing it all together. If you run
out of clicks before you should, take note and rotate the indexing limit
washer, put the shifter back on, and try again. It's just a matter of
finding the correct starting position. Then screw everything down and off
you go!

[RBW] Re: Drivetrains without a front derailer

2014-05-06 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Jim,
You need a dealer log-in to search, at least as far as I know. We let customers
look stuff up at our shop, and I bet your LBS would too.

Patrick, I'd think that "is it better for me?" would be higher on your list
than "which one's simpler?". Simple sometimes means MIG welding some straight
gauge tube into a triangle, and complicated sometimes means brazing some lugs
and slapping on fancy paint. Which to choose?

I've not tried this actual hub so I can't pass judgment, but I'm not exactly in
love with, or devoted to, any single component, brand, or concept as far as
drive trains are concerned.

[RBW] Re: Old PSA from B-Stone about prices for bikes

2014-05-06 Thread Scot Brooks
I work at a bike shop, but thankfully not one that sells new bikes. We find
nice old steel road and touring bikes, fix them up the way we like, put our
own sort of hand-shake-promise-warranty on them, and sell them for a modest
profit. We rarely get hagglers or people who want to price shop us (on new
parts, or helmets, etc.) against the internet, but it happens. It can feel
really crappy when it does because it feels like the customer is saying our
thing is worth less, or our time is worth less, or whatever. They're just
trying to save money, but it seems to me that you'd only want to make a
purchase in a place where you trust the people who work there. When you
trust them, you believe they'll be fair and honest with you.

I didn't give up the corporate world of Business Development/Marketing to
work in a bike shop because it was going to get me rich. I did it because
I'd rather be doing it, and the nice people far outweigh the not-so-nice
ones.

So these are the same panniers I just purchased from Adam here on the
group. They're just as he described; good condition, used, but good
condition and lots of miles and years ahead of them. I tried them out, I
guess I'm just a saddlesack guy rather than a pannier guy, whatever that
means. Anyway, same deal he gave me is what I'm offering up. $100 for the
panniers plus $15 for shipping. Did you miss out when I purchased them? OK,
life is all about second chances :)

[RBW] Re: pre-ordered a blue Sam Hillborne a few minutes ago

2012-04-17 Thread Scot Brooks
Congratulations! I was in the same situation as you when I ordered my Sam.
Had a 14 year old Bontrager Privateer Comp that had been through many
reincarnations and it was time to get something new and nice. I think
you're going to look back at this as one of the best and most overdue
decisions you ever made.

In answer your question about the crankset; I went with the triple because
they accidentally shipped it to me (I ordered the double with the guard).
After riding it for awhile, I removed the big ring in favor of the guard
and I've never looked back. I still wish I got the double to begin with
because the gearing would be just a bit more useful. In my case, I bought
the 12-36 cassette from Riv and I never quite get to low gear even living
in hilly Seattle. The cassette would make more sense with the 42/30 double
or whatever it is, for me at least.

As for the big Marathons, you can go wicked big if you want. I got some
700x47 ones to try on my Sam and they fit no sweat, even (kinda sorta) with
fenders. I usually just ride the 38 version though.

[RBW] Re: Front Rack for Touring With Atlantis

You could certainly go custom and keep the mini around. From what I
understand, a regular low rider rack will sit at quite a jaunty angle on a
Riv fork.

[RBW] Finally hit the sweet spot with my Sam

2012-05-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Pardon the instagram quality; cameras are at the office.

I was messing around with a dry-run setup for the Seattle to Portland ride
and I think I've hit my own personal Sam Hillborne nirvana. Of course, this
only applies to the 6 day per week Seattle city stuff, but the camping
stuff can go on without much fuss. It goes like this:

700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Racer HS366 (hardly any mention of these anywhere,
but they're exceptionally good AND on sale from Schwalbe for $19.99 each at
the moment). I have the 700x38 Greenguard, but I prefer these. They just
feel right.

11-30 cassette, 8 speed. I love the 12-36 Riv standard, but it's now on the
"camping" rear wheel (Rhyno Lite 27mm, super gnarly)

SKS Longboards will be back on soon, but I'm just treating myself this week
while the weather's nice.

Salsa Delgado Cross 36h wheels from Jim Thill. Absolutely fantastic skill
from Jim of course. The dynohub front wheel gets to hang out in the closet
till next winter.

VO Model 6 saddle. Love it now that it's started to break in.

Medium shopsack and saddlesack xs is the best combo I've found as an every
day set up. The saddlesack large (and big rack) is just too much to mess
with as an every day thing. This is better for me. Looks good too.

Finally, my Sugino crank started life as a triple, transformed into a 36/24
double with a guard, and has now transformed into a 40/24 double with a
guard. Now I love it.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading my rambles. There's really
only one group of people I can share this without feeling nerdy (and who
will actually know what I'm going on about).

Good eye, Mike; it is a 60cm, which I completely forgot to mention. I'm
really jealous at the jaw-droppingly beautiful paint jobs I see on here, so
I'm glad my little cream colored headtube can still get some attention.

I think a 46/30 would be awesome, especially since you could make it as
versatile as you like with cassette choice. I was thinking about putting
together a 46/36 with my leftover rings, sort of a mini-roadie-double. My
mangled knuckle is telling me to stop messing around with taking cranks
apart though, so that will have to wait till another day. I'm also a
complete novice when it comes to getting creative with cranks, so I'll
probably have some questions for you when the time comes.

[RBW] Re: Ordered a Hunq today....

2012-05-09 Thread Scot Brooks
With the racing and want-to-look-racy world of bike fitment, it seems like they
had a weird line of thinking that went a little like this: better get the stem
way down, that's racy. Bike doesn't fit now that the stem is like that? Better
get a smaller frame to bring the bars closer, don't even think about raising
that stem, mister. Sort of a cart following the horse moment. Really weird.

[RBW] WTB: your 60cm-ish 700c touring frame

2012-05-15 Thread Scot Brooks
I've decided my Sam is perfect the way it is, which means I'm setting up a

rider front racks, I'm game. Trying to do this on a budget means that a new
Hunqapillar will have to wait.

[RBW] OT(ish): Is there such thing as a modern mixte touring bike?

2012-05-18 Thread Scot Brooks
As I've realized that my perfect Sam set-up is that of a basketted, every day
city commuter and weekend day tourer, I've been thinking about a true
camping/touring bike. An Atlantis is out of the budget and so is a Hunq, which
is sad but true. I've found some great options that will fit the budget, and a
couple that meet my requirements of tire clearance, low-rider-rackability, and
1" threaded fork. For those who are curious, the VO Polyvalent 700c "Campeur"
and the ENE Ciclo Touring are at the top of the list.

In the spirit of keeping my mind open, I landed on the idea of a camping mixte.
Does such a thing exist with stout-ish tubing, room for 700x38 tires with
fenders, cantilever brakes, and mounts for a low-rider front rack? If it
doesn't, I propose that there is certainly room in the world for such a thing.
I'd love to have one.

Hey William,
The Betty WOULD be in the mix, being that it's an absolutely extraordinary
bicycle, but my budget would be almost entirely tapped. That, combined with the
fact that I don't think low rider racks work with the Riv braze-ons. Another
consideration is that I really want to give some business to one of Seattle's
local shops who have gone way above and beyond for me on a couple of occasions.

[RBW] Long cage rear derailer options in silver

2012-06-02 Thread Scot Brooks
As my new bicycle is taking shape, I'm painfully aware all-over-again that
there are very few rear derailers being made in silver these days that will
accomodate my 12-36t cassette. Other than the euro LX sold through Riv, is
there anything that comes in a plain silver finish? I don't like the look
of the black or the silver/black Deore, though it's reliable, easily found,
and economical. I've given up on a used one, since rear derailers tend to
suffer quite a lot of cosmetic degradation before being offered for sale,
generally speaking.

I like the Dura-Ace suggestions quite a lot, but don't Shimano's GS derailers
run out of wrapping capacity well before 36t? I just assumed that SGS (or

Jim,
Undoubtedly there's some wisdom in your comment. Maybe the derailer big
wigs will move their design back to the days of yore at some point, but
there's no sense in making my bicycle wait.

Phil B.,
Those Paul RDs and White RDs are awesome. I never knew such a thing
existed, especially the Paul in the "rasta" color scheme. So cool.

William,
I never even considered that the dropout would be such a key player in
determining the abilities of the RD. I've still got a lot to learn I guess.

Montclair Bobby,
Definitely some good stuff to consider in there. Thanks for doing the
legwork.

[RBW] the longer trail

2012-06-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Looks awesome Brian! How are you enjoying the saddlesack small? I've got the XS
and the large, and I'm trying to justify buying one.

Side note, I saw my first Seattle Riv commuter today on a Saluki I think, way
down Chinatown.

[RBW] FS: Dynamo/Touring Wheelset with 700x47 Marathon Greenguards

2012-06-19 Thread Scot Brooks
Here are 8 photos of the wheels and tires exactly as they are at the
moment (imgur
link). They won't be ridden before I sell them.
I'd like to do this locally in Seattle, but I'm sure something could be
worked out with shipping if you're interested.

The wheels are true, have less than 100 miles on them (the tires have less
than 15 miles), and are totally good-to-go with no surprises. The rear is a
hand-built 36h Rhyno Lite with a Shimano SLX hub, really strong. Built by
20/20 Cycles in Seattle. The front is a (presumably) machine-built 32h
Salsa Delgado Cross with a Shimano DH-3D71 Dynamo Hub (which is also
disc-compatible, though you can use it with rim brakes just as well). The
Front wheel was purchased originally at REI.

To recap, you get the wheels, the skewers, the rim tape, the tubes, and the
tires.
$250 local pick-up, shipping figured out if not.

-Scot

[RBW] Re: FS: Dynamo/Touring Wheelset with 700x47 Marathon Greenguards

2012-06-20 Thread Scot Brooks
OK, so I've decided to make these available in 3 optional packages. Take
your pick.

1) Wheels, 700x47c Marathon Greenguards (maybe 15 miles on these). This is
the original offer.

2) Wheels, 700x38c Marathon Greenguards (approximately 300 miles). This
will fit on a Sam H. with fenders.

3) Wheels, 700x32c Pasela TGs (maybe 50 miles or so, but dirty rain miles).
Probably really hard to fit on the Rhyno Lite considering the 27.5mm width
of the rim. You could use the Paselas on a different bike and fit some
appropriate tires on this wheelset.

[RBW] Long distance clothing choices

2012-07-03 Thread Scot Brooks
So the Seattle to Portland ride is coming up (200 miles in 2 days), and I'm
kinda thinking about wardrobe. I'm not a spandex guy, and though I wore it
for quite awhile some years ago, I just never felt right in it. The
farthest I've gotten is running socks, boat shoes (my all time favorite
riding footwear), Exofficio undies, and that's it. Running shorts will
probably be next thing, which seems like a good choice. I wanted a MUSA
short sleeve wool tee shirt, but they're out of mediums. Might end up with
a butt-crack tan line if I go the tee shirt route.

Anyway, what do you guys and gals wear when distance is the thing?

Also, who's going? I'll probably be riding my Sam, but I might break out my
newly-built-secret-weapon bike.

[RBW] Sam appreciation and envy at STP

2012-07-16 Thread Scot Brooks
Living through this last weekend's Seattle to Portland bike ride was pretty
great, and there were quite a few Riv spottings along the way. There was a
couple with two...Atlanti, Atlantises...whatever, a couple Rams at least,
and I think I spotted a Bleriot. Non compared to the Sam I saw while
waiting in the UW parking lot for the bike trucks to unload. It was a new
color 56 with double top tubes of course, nitto front and rear racks, Nigel
Smythe front and rear tweed excellence, Brooks of course, Silver shifters,
SON dynohub, Edelux (I believe) light, and the list goes on. It really was
the ultimate expression of a Sam for me. What's worse is that it made mine
look like a wretch. Mine has all the sam SORT of stuff, but just the low
brow versions of...everything. I think the bell was even better. Hopefully
it made it back to its owner, because it was there for at least 2 1/2 hours
while I was waiting, and I left at maybe 11:45pm.

[RBW] New Build. Not a Riv, but a friend of Riv

2012-07-29 Thread Scot Brooks
Here's the link to the imgur album with 8
images.

I wanted a Hunqapillar, but I realized it was too far out of budget. I
decided to set up my Sam a little more hardcore and get something else that
would be an All-Arounder type bike. I ended up with a Soma Double Cross,
and it's proven to be excellent. It's getting a full write-up in my Cycling
Illustrated
column,
but that won't be online until tomorrow. If you read it and maybe even
comment, I'd be really grateful. I'm just trying to gently remind the
racing folks that there are other bikes to ride. Here's the build list for
the time being. It has notes because it appears in the article as well.

*
Soma Double Cross frame $425 (ordered through 20/20
Cycle
)
Soma Cyclo-Cross Fork $150 (really exceptional, really great value)
Salsa Delgado Cross/LX Wheels $270 (hand-built by Jim
Thill
)
Schwalbe Marathon Racer 700x35c $15/each (scored at Bike Expo from Schwalbe)
Velo Orange 48x34t Double $100 (on sale)
MKS Touring Pedals $40
9 speed chain, KMC probably $20
Shimano 12-36t 9 speed cassette $50 (serious range)
Shimano bottom bracket $30 (I think)
ENE Grand Comp bar end shifters $70 (friction shifting is sweet)
Shifter cables/housing $15
Nitto Moustache Handlebars $90 (super versatile, great bars)
Shimano brake levers $50 (Tiagra, Sora, something like that...)
Brake cables/housing $15
Shimano cantilever brakes $15 (old as hell design, still good, still in
production)
Civia Stem $20
Velo Orange Headset $40
Soma set-back seatpost $25 (probably)
Velo Orange Model 6 saddle $45 (crazy sale price + coupon)
Shimano Deore RD $55
IRD Alpina triple FD $40 (in case I ever want a Sugino triple for instance)
Newbaum’s cotton bar tape $10
King stainless water bottle cage $20
Miscellaneous stuff I forgot $25 (?)*

[RBW] Re: Microshift thumbies?

2014-09-24 Thread Scot Brooks
The deal with the Microshift thumb shifters and the IRDs is that they work
great. I've tried both at the shop, and been happy enough. There is an
alternative though; Sunrace thumb shifters (and NOT the ones Riv sells) can
be had in 8 or 9 speed indexed for $28 retail per side, or $56 for a bike's
worth. They are as accurate as the Microshift or the IRD, for sure, no
doubt about it.

[RBW] Re: LED Fender Lights: Spanninga vs. PDW Fenderbot

2014-09-24 Thread Scot Brooks
The Pixeo is pretty good, definitely bright enough, but has a weak point on
the inside, where the threaded plate is retained by plastic channels. If
you tighten beyond snug, the plate rounds out the channels and spins
freely. Then you have to disassemble the light and hold the plate manually
to get it tight again. Small thing, but likely enough to happen. Otherwise,
fine light.

[RBW] Dynamo lighting and colored gels

2014-11-04 Thread Scot Brooks
This post is meant to let you know about some messing around I've done and
the results I've found.
I've never been quite happy with the color temperature of the LEDs in the
dynamo lights I've owned, which includes the IQ Fly, Cyo, Eyc, and most
recently the Edelux. Remembering that I was always partial to a nice yellow
set of goggles back in my skiing days, I thought producing a less-blue
light might be nicer for me. I experimented with some scrap pieces of Rosco
colored photographic gels to get a more pleasing color temperature. I went
for the commonly used and widely available CTO (color temperature orange).
As far as I know, these come in CTO, 1/2 CTO, and 1/4 CTO, maybe others.
The CTO is *really* orange and cuts out too much light, but might be OK
with one of the newer super high lux lights. The 1/2 CTO is really nice but
still absorbs just a tiny bit too much light for my Edelux. I'd recommend
trying this one if you have a powerful light or a really dark commute. The
1/4 CTO turns the super blue LED light into a much nicer neutral/warm light
without absorbing too much for city riding. If you don't have photographic
gels, you can buy sheets really cheap. If you have a small light, you might
be able to get away with using one of the tiny sheets from the *free *Rosco
sample pack they'll send you.

[RBW] Re: Sackville SaddleSack Large or Medium for Rides to Beach?

2014-05-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Homer,
I think the large is the winner where a beach trip is concerned. More stuff
fits inside and towels are pretty bulky. The advantage the medium has, in
that it doesn't require a rack, isn't an advantage at all for you it seems.
No balance issues for me, no back of the leg annoyance, and since it's not
really any wider than most people's grip on the handlebars, it won't run
into anything you don't run into with your hands first. My one gripe about
it, from my personal experience, is that I've got to be really careful with
my leg swing-over when I have the flap super overloaded, like with a big
sleeping pad or something. Otherwise, it's great. Number one best feature
is the super fast and easy access, which I've found to be much better than
all other saddlebags.

[RBW] Re: thump thump thump thump

2014-05-07 Thread Scot Brooks
Hi Lynne,
Sounds like you've done a good job going down the checklist, but here's
what I'd do before building a new wheel. File the brake pads so that any
little metal shards are out of the picture, then I'd give a bit of angle to
the pads, so instead of looking like this | | when you look down at them,
they'll look like this / \ but not as extreme. This will make it so the
trailing edge of the pad (since the top of the tire is moving away from
you) makes contact with the rim first, rather than the leading edge.
That'll eliminate the hard edge of the pad as a possible reason at least.
You can do this yourself with an adjustable wrench by bending the arms of
the brake (assuming you have caliper brakes), but your LBS probably has the
Park tool designed for this very thing. Hopefully that works! If not, we'll
come up with a plan B.

[RBW] Dumonde Tech Chain Lube Initial Review

2014-05-14 Thread Scot Brooks
Sounds good for your specific needs, Patrick. The only thing I can add to this
discussion is that we get all sorts of lubes sent to our shop here in Seattle
(rainy, at least almost as much as people think), mostly "high tech" or
"purpose specific" or whatever, and they're all pretty OK. We try them all on
our own bikes and sometimes on we ask the hardcore cyclocross guys and the bike
polo guys to try them. Usually the finding is that they're the same or
marginally worse or marginally better. Most often the same. The only constant
is that lube is better than no lube. Tri Flow, Boeshield, Prolink, it's hard to
tell any difference. We got some recently from a weapons contractor. Fine
stuff, but we couldn't tell the difference. Extreme conditions sometimes
requires extreme lubes I suppose, but generally it makes hardly any difference.
Hear chirping birds? Lube it up.

[RBW] Re: Your pre-80's steel vs. today's steel bikes.

2014-05-25 Thread Scot Brooks
I ride a LOT of classic steel, some good, some boring, some incredible. At my
shop, fixing up classic steel frames while retaining their flavor is our entire
business model. My Sam feels good but not at the level of some bikes that roll
through our shop; an old Atala, a dumpster find Windsor, a Medici. Not to say
they were made by people who care about what they do more than the people who
made my Sam but they FELT incredible. Better in fact. Love my Sam but, man, the
past had some nice stuff.

[RBW] Re: Your pre-80's steel vs. today's steel bikes.

2014-05-25 Thread Scot Brooks
The one I'd really like to try is the Rodriguez Outlaw. They're built here

there. They're light enough that I'd almost be afraid it would end up as a
single-use-only product at my 190 lbs.

[RBW] FS: New 650b wheelset with Compass Loup Loup Pass tires

The wheelset was built at our shop for a project that is no longer
happening. The rims are Soma Weymouth 36h, the hubs are Tiagra 36h, the
spokes are DT Champion 2.0 straight gauge, the tires are Compass Grand Bois
Loup Loup Pass 650x38b. Rim tape and tubes in there as well. All ready to
go, totally hand built with lots of love. $450 for everything, which
basically gives you labor ($120) knocked off the price. Price will lower
every so often until the set sells. Free pick up in Seattle or actual
shipping.
