Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus questions

I’ve been lucky enough to have ridden all of them, but only own Homer and Platy.  I sold my Appaloosa two years ago to buy the Platy.   My test ride on an Atlantis was what sold me on Rivendell.   Leah, BBDD, has a Platy and Clem L.   Clem L rode nicely. Platy is sportier.  I know the wheelbases because there  is a wheelbase limit to put a bike on the rather short Philadelphia bus bike racks, and I was on a search… Platy is too long. When I do tip the bike, I tip towards me. RobertaSent from my iPadOn Feb 10, 20236, at 9:39 PM, dougP wrote:Wow! I worked 30 years as a middle school LA/SS teacher (bike commuted every day) and hanging out with the bikes in the basement was a form of therapy and decompression. Now, I'm semi-retired. I work as a substitute teacher 2 days/week, and a professional bike mechanic (!) 3 days/week at Go By Bike, "North America's largest bike valet service" https://www.gobybikepdx.com/  I'm living my best life.a few months ago I had a valet client who was complaining that she couldn't get her seat low enough. I pulled the seat, put the post in the vice, cut 6 inches off the bottom, touched up the edges with a file, and remounted it in the position she wanted. I took the remaining section of seatpost and stuck a piece of tape on it where I wrote "It's not Rocket Science."  This reminder is still on a shelf in the shop. The shop had a brilliant idea to host a class for a small number of students to teach basic bicycle maintenance/mechanics. Students were to bring their own bikes, which was wonderful because we would learn to work on what we actually have. Our teacher was quietly brilliant, extremely patient, and, well, dreamy. (I would love to set him up with my friend from my women’s club ride and then be in their wedding. Unable to ascertain his marital status without committing harassment, I am still in the throes of scheming.)I digress! He taught us how the shop gives each bike a once-over. It’s an M shape, starting at the front wheel, going up to the bars, down to the pedal/chain ring, up to the saddle and down to that rear wheel. From there we moved on to wheel truing, derailleurs and shifters, and finally, brakes. There were three of us in the class; one aluminum Trek with flat bars, a steel Jamis that had been ridden hard on the trainer in covid, and my raspberry Platypus. We all had V brakes. They had indexed shifting and I had friction. When examining our bikes, we/he found several problems (though not on the Platypus because I drag that bike in for every little thing) that we then observed our teacher fix. I now know what a loose headset sounds like (the Trek). Though, ironically, if you hit my front wheel to elicit the sound, the German mirror will respond with an identical sound. There are some skills that I still see best left to the experts - wheel truing, for instance. I audibly gasped when he took after the spokes of a wheel to mess them up for demonstration. I am leaving my new spoke wrench in the packaging because no good can come from that thing.I am still not brave enough to do a lot with tools to my bike,

heavier still. Another comparison would be to the Riv Ruffy Tuffy (700x28)
or Jack Brown (700x33). SOMA's lightweight tires are the Supple Vitesse
models, which are roughly in the same market as the Panaracer GravelKing
slicks and the Rene Herse standard casing models:

 SOMA Shikoro (folding): 28c (320g), 33c (350g), 38c (430g)

 SOMA Supple Vitesse SL (light): 28c (220g), 33c (250g), 38c (270g), 42c
 (340g)

 SOMA Supple Vitesse EX (heavy): 28c (270g), 33c (290g), 38c (320g), 42c
 (380g)

Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy: 28c (not currently listed on
Riv or SOMA sites, so who knows?)

 Rivendell Jack Brown:33c (320g
 light, 400g heavy)

 Panaracer GravelKing slick:28c (270g), 32c (290g), 35c (310g),
 38c (330g)

 Rene Herse (standard):28c (248g), 32c (291g), 35c
 (355g), 38c (385g), 44c (375g)

 Rene Herse (extralight): 28c (225g), 32c (254g), 35c
 (303g), 38c (350g), 44c (330g)

By tradition, we can assume that many of these weights are wishful
thinking - maybe many of the measurements, too. Some of them are clearly
wrong; how can the 700x44 Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires possibly weigh
less than the 700x38 Barlow Pass ones, unless the casings on the 700x44s
are sidewall-bursting thin? And weightwise, the SOMA Supple Vitesse SLs
are just crazy light, if those numbers are real.

A nice-riding, fairly durable 700x30-something tire (if you can find them)
is the SOMA New Express, which has the Panaracer Pasela tread with a more
flexible casing. This was originally a 700c tire, which SOMA discontinued
when they introduced the Supple Vitesse on the lighter end and the Shikoro
on the heavier end. I rode a pair of folding New Expresses in 700x35 for a
year or so on my around-town bike, and really liked them; I'd buy them
again if they were still available.

I got this information from Riv's website:

 Nitto Albatross, 55cm x 25.4

That’s a lovely ride, small gravel for 5 miles over Forbidden Drive (forbidden
to cars) then MUP to Kelly Drive.

I suggest from Kelly Drive, right turn at Falls Bridge over the Schuylkill,
left at MLK drive then car-free road for next four miles to the Art Museum.
Then have your GPS to the Convention center. John’s ride is also a really
nice 15 miles.

I look forward to seeing you.

Even if you park on the street somewhere, just come down to the trail.

Regarding the trail surface: I haven't been on the HHT since 2018, but I
seem to remember that most of the trail is paved, and what isn't is a very
fine crushed stone surface -- in other words, any bike and any tire will
 be fine on it.

Regarding the climb: They are approaches to a fairly high bridge, but the
grade really isn't bad at all.

Regarding the ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch: It's a nice (and
shorter) alterntive to going back to Matawan. As Dave pointed out, the
ride from Sandy Hook to Long Branch starts off alongside a large rock
seawall on a paved trail, but that's only for a couple of miles -- after
that, you're on Rt. 36 as you enter downtown Sea Bright. After Sea Bright,
there's a wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At
Long Branch Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've
turned onto side streets from there to get to the train station. A ride
along Ocean Ave (not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year (no
crowds) would be very nice, as it's obviously right along the ocean.

To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in the
below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to
Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge
(bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at
Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before
 taking the train home:

[RBW] Re: Bartubes discontinued

2017-12-04 Thread REC
This was one the reasons I hesitated. The other being I'd wear out the
Velcro.

I was thinking of also getting the short leather straps, putting them thru
the bag loops and then on the saddle loops. In the end, I purchased a
Carradice roll bag in black to blend in with my black saddle and other
black bags in the rear. My front bag is a grey XS saddle sack (love it).

Re: [RBW] Found Upright riding worse than drops riding.

2017-12-11 Thread REC
Off list I had contacted Patrick about shoulder and neck pain on my non Riv
bike asking for recommendations on what changes I could make on it. Saddle
and handlebars are about the same height. His suggestion once he saw
picture of the bike setup was to move the saddle back. I don't know the
right terminology, but just as the seat is "behind" the peddles on the OM-1
pictured above, my seat wasn't. I changed the saddle to one with longer
rails and moved it to the most back position. This removed most of my pain
and I felt more balanced on the bike. It's almost perfect. In fact, it is
so good, that I'm thinking about getting a Selle Anatomica saddle because I
heard that because it has longer rails I can move the seat back even
more. Thank you Patrick!

I went there four times from Dec 2016 to Aug 2017--to see what a Rivendell

[RBW] I'll be at Riv and need some suggestions about the local area

2018-02-12 Thread REC
If this is too off topic, I'm sure the moderator will delete. I know a lot
of you live in the area and would love your input.

Since I'll be flying from PA to S. CA at the end of the month for business,
I decided to stop in San Francisco to visit Rivendell. I'll be arriving on
a Sunday about noon, and leaving Tuesday, probably on a 5pm flight
out. I'll be flying into SFO, and I can fly out of either SFO or Oakland
airport, whichever makes most sense with my schedule. I'll be renting a
car, because I'll need it for some of the trip, but I have no issues using
BART when that is more practical. I'll be staying in Emeryville and that
would be my first stop, so I could drop off my bags.

I'm planning on visiting Golden Gate Park (conservancy of flowers, Art
Museum) , take a walk in Muir Woods, perhaps Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf,
and visit Rivendell. My tastes are more toward nature and museums, but I
love the get a feel of the area, so I'd probably just want to "walk around"
but I'm not sure where. I'm open to all suggestions on what to see, when
to see it, and how to maximize my time.

So, with two half days and one full day, are there any suggestions on how
to split my time, especially when it comes to potentially getting caught in
traffic? Perhaps Muir Woods on Sunday, SF on Monday? What is the traffic
like--would SF be better on a Sunday (or twice)? I figure 1/2 day at Riv
for the drive up and back and "visit." or should I see what Walnut Creek
has to offer? It's probably been 25 years since I've been to SF area.

And, no, I won't be doing any biking.

Thanks,
Roberta

2018-02-12 Thread REC
Thanks to all, so far. I just decided this morning to make the SF
stop--that will be Feb 25-27.

I probably should have mentioned that I own a Joe Appaloosa (so there IS
Rivendell content) and just love it. The group here, as well as my calls
to Riv, helped me with my decision last April and I appreciated all the
input.

I do like the idea of staying in SF and doing some hikes there (and the
Sutro Baths look interesting). It makes a good use of time. I went to
Muir Woods years ago and was just awed by the experience.

Re: [RBW] How avoid sore throats from riding in cold weather?

2018-02-24 Thread REC
On my last couple of rides, I've been trying Deacon Patrick's suggestion of
nose breathing. The issue I've run into is that my nose drips so much that
I have to stop every couple of minutes to blow it. Which now gets me to
wondering... would this perhaps help your post nasal drip, coming out the
front of your nose rather than the back? The issue for me, is that
stopping so much makes the ride less fun.

Deacon Patrick--Do you have this issue? Does it go away with time and
experience? Does it just not bother you?

[RBW] San Francisco, Rivendell and new friends

2018-03-12 Thread REC

A few weeks ago many of you offered suggestions on what to do on my short
trip to San Francisco. (Bikes everywhere I thought Philadelphia was a
biking town. Not like it is in the Bay area.) It was way-too-short a trip
and didn’t get in half of what I planned. Highlights were the Japanese Tea
Garden and the park, the walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, and the
Streets of San Francisco bike tour (I was so happy to get some biking in).
Thank
you to everyone who offered suggestions and bikes to borrow. I’m planning
on going back next year and that trip will be longer, so I can get in the
sites I had to miss.

I visited Rivendell, whose showroom had a few bikes and lots of Joe
Appaloosas in boxes (there’s many more to the right of the photo that I
couldn’t get into the shot). I hope they all sell out fast and make a lot
of people very happy; I just LOVE mine. The new blue color is gorgeous and
as nice as it looks in pictures, it looks even better in person. I met (in
order of “hellos”) the dog (I forget his name, but he was a friendly as
could be), Mark, Roman, and Grant. I left with a mug for Leah (Bicycle
Belle Ding Ding!), and noted a few items that I was going to add to my
on-line shopping cart to ship directly to me once I got home. The mug is
beautiful, hefty stoneware and I recommend it; it’s not just another
typical promotional mug. I added one to my cart for me, after seeing it in
person. I’m so happy that I support a company of this caliber, both in
quality of products but, especially, in quality of people.

Lastly, I went to visit my sister in Nevada, who lives in the same town as
Leah (Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!) and she invited me for coffee. As a bonus
(for me), she brought her Betty Foy for me to meet in person. What a lovely
and well-loved bike! How long can you chat with someone you’ve never met
before? Well, over three hours! I’ve met a few people on the boards (on
rides and some PMs) and everyone is so friendly and “not weird.” She is as
nice in person as she is on the board. Thanks for the great coffee and
conversation, Leah!

So, from about 20 months ago when I had never heard of Rivendell to now,
I’ve gotten a bike that I love, met new friends and have learned a lot from
the board. Thank you, everyone!

[RBW] Anyone have a spare Rivendell mug they're willing to part with?

2018-03-21 Thread REC
It IS missing! Perhaps like a lot of Riv’s items that “seem” expensive, it’s
not until you see the quality that you get that “ah-ha” moment.

Leah, mine is still winging its way to me across the country. I hope it gets
here tomorrow. I’m glad you like yours.

[RBW] Re: Super long chainstays and putting your bike buses/trains

2018-03-22 Thread REC
When I got my Joe Appaloosa, I rode it to a bus depot and tested it out on
the bus front bike carrier and it fit OK. ALMOST too long, but it did
fit. Afterwards, I got fenders on the bike and retested and it was fine (I
think I'm recalling that correctly), just that I needed to place the hold
down arm on the fender. If anyone needs to be sure, I'll be happy to go
back to a bus depot and retest, take pictures, measure anything you'd
like. Septa is my local mass transportation company and you can see the
bike carrier (it might be the same as on your busses) on this short video:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2KIDh7ZDFs

I haven't loaded my Joe A. on a bus, but I have brought it on a Septa
regional train. I was at a stop that didn't have a platform and carrying
up the three huge steps into the car from the street level was tough. If I
need to do that again, I'd ride to a stop with a platform and roll it on.

I'd be happy to ride to a bus depot this weekend, if no rain or snow, and take
some measurements at how much addition tray space there is left. Let me know.

Jonathan D. midway in the current Lower Price Atlantis tread

has a Joe A. and fits in the Portland, OR bus tray. You could ask him about

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone have a spare Rivendell mug they're willing to part with?

2018-03-26 Thread REC
I had seen this mug on the website, but wouldn't have spent $30 for a mug
for my self. A gift for a friend, no problem! However when I saw how nice
it was, I sprung for a gift for my self and it sounds like I might have
gotten the last one. I noticed something in the wording between the first
and last lines that I hadn't noticed before. The first line reads
"rivendell bicycle works" [sic], the last line reads "rivendell bicycles
work" [sic].

The second line is a series of bikes--bike with dog in basket (now known as
Leah's dog in basket), double top tub, mixte, etc.The graphics are
around the entire mug, so is good for lefty's as much as right handed
people (in case Riv orders another batch, some might like to know).

Re: [RBW] What underseat bags work on sprung Brooks?

2018-03-26 Thread REC
I strap a smallish, inexpensive bag to the seat rails and keep my fix-it
items in there. A Carradice Zipped Roll on the saddle bag loops would work
(would also probably work strapped to the rails).

Another option is to put a roll tool bag or a water bottle filled with
tools in a water cage. I was thinking about putting my tools in a water
bottle cage located on the underside of my down tube. Out of the way and
they will stay dry.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-11 Thread REC
I hope you son is ok! Not a time to get a nail in a foot.

The name of the thread is “30 days of biking!” and I’m interpreting that to
mean 30 rides in 30 days. Reality is though that I probably get 5 out of 7
days. Work, weather, fatigue gets in the way. When I miss a day I try to get
on two rides within the next day or two to make up for it.

However, what I have promised myself (and am doing )is “something” every day,
and that “something “ when not riding is walking. So, if for some reason I
don’t get on my bike one day, I will be taking a longer than usual walk. Some
lucky days I get both.

It’s 53* out now and my Joe Appaloosa is calling to me.

Re: [RBW] Helpless in Nevada: How do you secure this fender?

2020-04-11 Thread REC
Thanks, Steve!

I knew and gave her some of this info but not all of it. I’ll forward your
message to her.

Her bike is a cheap ill fitting step through, with barely enough room to get
her leg through the low top tube (very short effective TT). The seat post was
nearly slammed. Leah and I had her raise it and get the saddle set at a better
angle. She did get to ride Leah’s Clem H and after going just 25’ remarked how
much nicer it was. She did have sticker shock when we told her she could get a
good deal on a used Clem L.

Well, to be honest, it took me some time to get over the investment $$ also.
I’m ever so glad I did!

If you purchase your bike or take delivery physically in ca you will need to
pay sales tax. If you order it online and you have it ship to you, you will
only pay sales tax if they have an employee in NV.

I cannot imagine you seeing and riding it in CA and not taking it with you
when you’d leave! You’d have Mixte withdrawal symptoms for a week until it
shows up in NV

I’d probably fly in to make my purchase decision and it would be so cool to go
on rides with others from the board!! They would all come out to visit

Re: [RBW] Re: Pitted German mirror and possible WTB the mirror

2019-08-14 Thread REC
Friend,

Congratulations on the clementine L! It looks like a most awesome bike and
nearly everyone who has one loves it.

For the pitting, imagine pin marks (pricks) all over mirror. The mirror is
silver and the pricks are dark grey, the same color as the road, so makes it
harder to see. I’ll be home later and will post a pic.

Perhaps I live in a more polluted area (scary). Maybe I should move to Atlanta,
where everyone is nice. 😊

[RBW] Three 55cm and No 51cm Appaloosas Left

2017-04-03 Thread REC
I asked Roman to clarify something from Grant's blog about only three
Appaloosas left, and this was his reply:

"Grant was referring to 55cm Appaloosa completes. That being said and I'm
sorry to say, we're totally sold out of 51cm Appaloosa framesets and
completes. Almost all of them were preordered and the remaining few went
faster than we could imagine (even oversold).

The next order of Appaloosas is a ways out."

So, if you want a 55cm one, you'd better order soon.

Chris, yes, this was the one on their floor and it was already built up
with the saddle and grips. I live in downtown Philadelphia, about halfway
between the NY and MD dealers, and I did not want to drive to NY if I had
an option to drive to MD. Plus, G&G had 12-15 built up Rivs to test, so I
got to test all three in my size.

The magenta tape that Tracy suggested is officially called violet, in case
anyone wants that color. I'm really liking the contrast between that and
the mustard color (I think I'll start calling it butterscotch--sounds
nicer) of the bike. I also think that the silver and grey accessories will
lighten the look even more.

I'll be taking it back to be adjusted and the accessorized in 2-4 weeks.
I'll post more pictures then.

About the sits-bones and lower back--I'm used to sore sits bones in the new
season, but I never had a sore lower back. My sits-bones are fine today,
but my lower back still hurts a little. Is this normal? This is my first
leather saddle, B17; my others were gel and I liked them just fine.

Thank you all!

Also, yes, I am sitting a bit more upright on this bike. I think I'll keep
riding and by the time I get back to the dealer in 2-4 weeks, I should know
if I need a new saddle, or if it was just my body needing to adjust.

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Bags and Hub Area Racks

2017-05-17 Thread REC
H I think that I watched it but couldn't find it. someone did
explain it to me. but I haven't done this on my own yet.

Start with a Surly Junk Strap inside your bag. Let's say you're starting
with the right grommet.
Thread the strap through the grommet to the outside the bag, around the
horizontal rack rod (I'm sorry, I don't know what it's called exactly.
It's the rod that you would "clip" a pannier to) and back into the bag.
Thread the strap through left grommet and out the grommet, around the
horizontal rack rod and back into the back into the bag.
Secure the strap into the buckle inside the bag.

[RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-30 Thread REC
I'm not that knowledgeable about bikes in particular, but the hung is your
"favorite" and it's obvious from your follow up replies that it brings
you so much joy. I wouldn't sell anything that brings that much
happiness. After that, you can decide if the Sam (no more monetary layout)
or the Atlantis or another bike would be a good 2nd.

I have one of those wall leaning bike racks, so I can store two bikes in
the space of one in a narrow breezeway. Both are available any time I want
to ride AND I get an upper body workout putting a bike on the top tier. :)

When I was selling, I'd say "buy what you love." In this case, I say "keep
what you love." It will cost you less in the long run AND make you happier
AND with some creative storage solutions, give you space.

Congratulations on the new baby.

[RBW] WTB: feeler for 51cm Sam Hillborne, 55 Cheviot, 55 or 58 Betty Foy, Roscoe Bubbe or similar bikes

2017-05-31 Thread REC
 Hello, everyone.
I'm sending out feeler for the price of a used 51cm Sam Hillborne, 55cm
Cheviot, 55cm or 58cm Betty Foy, Rosco Bubbe Mixte, Atlantis--but I think I
won't be able to afford one, even if used-- (or any bikes similar to ones
on this list), with standard Rivendell builds or Rivendell-like builds.
Albatross,
Choco bars, or similar (no drop bars). Needs to be able to mount a 38
(anywhere from 35-40 is OK) wide tire. Needs to be complete bike, but I'm
OK if you want to sell sans saddle or pedals. My PBH is 83cm.

I’m not looking for perfect looking or fancy—I don’t need racks (but I
wouldn’t say no to a rear rack), fenders, or anything else that would make
the bike look “expensive.” In fact, the more plain-Jane, the better. 90%
of my rides are on asphalt. The roads aren't well maintained.

Background: This is to be a 2nd bike, one that I keep at my office for my
hour-ish after work rides to replace my early '90s hybrid. My bike at
home is a new Joe Appaloosa that I ride on the weekends and I LOVE IT I’d
like this second bike to be a little different than the Appaloosa and less
flashy, so I’d feel comfortable should I need to lock during a ride stop.

If anyone has a bike he/she is possibly interested in selling, could you do
a Private Reply and let me know what you have and about how much you’re
looking for. I don’t need pictures and I won’t hold you to the number. I’m
just trying to figure out if I have the budget for a second, albeit used,
Rivendell. I see the CL prices, but I don't know if they are what the
bikes actually sell for.

There have been a few wonderful members here who have offered frames to me
at great prices and I deeply appreciate their offers, but I cannot build a
bike, and getting a bike shop to do it will make it unaffordable to me.

Thanks so much.

Roberta

[RBW] Re: Bike computer

2017-06-09 Thread REC
I used to have Cateye brand computer on my non-Riv bike (I'm only 2 months
in on a Joe A.), and found it helpful--it pushed me when I was slowing
down, for example, because I could SEE how slow I was going, However, now
I can "know" the same thing without the computer; I feel it.

Also, it's more fun to just ride as I feel and look around than just down
to my computer. I must admit, though, that I do turn on Strava at the
beginning of the ride and check it when I think it's time to turn around to
start home. I have my mile markers (10 miles, 15 miles) so I really don't
need to check it if I'm on a familiar route. Interesting in that I'm not
going any slower now, but a little faster (OK, Strava does tell me that
and I do look at the end of the ride...)

Does either Strava or Cyclometer or any of the others reverse your trip

Right now, I only go exactly where I know I can backtrack, so I don't get

[RBW] Re: New Riv Model - Newsletter

I read this as those colors might not be available for those models, not
that the models are going away. The Appaloosa was such a swift seller (and
loved by many, including me), I cannot imaging not bringing in more "soon."

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread REC
Hi, Broccoli Cog.

I got my first Brooks--a B17 two months ago on a Joe A. Prior to that, I
rode inexpensive saddles that I purchased at the LBS, but those rides were
usually short, less than 10 miles.

My first ride on B17 was OK, but my sits bones and back hurt a little, like
the first spring ride after the winter is finally over. Don't know if it
was the saddle or the upright position. Never had an issue after that.
Only about 125-150 miles on it so far and no other issues. I cannot say
"it's the most comfortable saddle ever" but I can say that I can ride it 30
miles without any issues and not really noticing it's there. I guess that
makes it the most comfortable saddle in that there is no discomfort at all.

I did try a cambium, the C19 I think, on a test ride of another bike and
did not like it. However, I was only on it for 10 minutes, so not sure
that was a fair test ride. One day, I'd like to try a flyer on my Joe.

I ride in regular clothes, no padded shorts.

[RBW] Re: Breaking in a leather Brooks

2017-06-20 Thread REC

"they're probably going to get enough water with sweat. "

Is sweat something to be concerned with an untreated saddle? Currently, my
saddle is untreated.

Broccoli Cog--not that I'm an expert, as I've had my brooks (B-17) for 2
months--150 miles. I was a little sore after my first ride, fine since
then. Still, every time I get on I think "this is so hard, how can it be
comfortable?" Yet, it is.

I had a bike stolen 25 years ago and that was very upsetting. Not because
it was an expensive and beautiful bike like yours, but because someone had
the nerve to just take what I had worked so hard to earn.

Will you be keeping it in your house from now on?Even if you keep it
locked to an immovable object in your basement, they will be protected from
onlookers, should they bring a grinder to remove the lock and retake the
bike.

I read on the iBob forum something about a blue tooth tracking device for
bikes. Don't know anything else about it, but might be worth looking into.

I think I purchased the last 51 Joe A from Gravel and Grind (it IS a cool

wonderful bike! My next favorite was the Atlantis, but that was out of my
budget. And, I don't even do any touring!

I have been looking for used Rivs on Craigslist, so I can keep a second

this for a few weeks and it's still available. I *think* it's from one of

Legendary 1992 Bridgestone XO-2 $425 52cm frame

This Pearl White example is almost completely original. The tires are not
original and the specifications said the bike was originally equipped with
presta tubes. The bike currently has schraeder valved tubes so it is likely
the rims have been drilled to accomodate the larger "car type" valves. The
rear rack is a Specialized branded one. Overall condition is very good.

Complete specifications and geometry can be found at the pdf file at the
link below. XO-2 description on page 38 Geometry information is on page 47,
Component specifications on page 49

http://sheldonbrown.com/bridgestone/1992/1992.pdf

If you're even looking at this ad, you likely know a little bit about the
Bridgestone bikes of the early 90s and Grant Petersen. Grant Petersen
currently runs Rivendell Bicycles and is well-known for promoting sensible
(but not cheap) bicycles. The PDF file at the link is a 1992 Bridgestone
catalog which has all sorts of interesting information on bicycle sizing,
components, and materials.

We're asking real money for this bicycle and while we may entertain offers,
we may not accept much below the listed price. The listed price is pretty
much mid-range from what we've uncovered via the wonders of the internet.
If you're seriously interested, contact us by email and set up a time to
check out the bike with your own eyes. After you've inspected the bike you
can always make an offer but, if it's not realistic, don't hold your breath
expecting it to be accepted.

If the advertisement on Craigslist is up, then the bike is available.
Thanks for looking!

[RBW] Re: How do you guys do it, buying a bike sight unseen

2017-08-13 Thread REC
I am lucky enough to have two riv dealers within a 3 hour drive, although
I've only been to and purchased from one.

I'd only heard of riv for a few months before I went on a test ride of
atlantis and cheviot. I might have ridden a sam also. I spoke a few
times with Riv corp about which ones would be best for me, and then I went
down again a few months later and rode sam and appaloosa, which is the one
I bought on the spot.

Now, with a few different rides and information from this board, if I
wanted another riv, and couldn't test it prior to purchase, I would trust
rivendell recommendation.

Still, without having a local dealer with built up stock, I never would
have made this first purchase.

[RBW] Re: New Clem L

2017-08-18 Thread REC
Hi, Lum.

Weight is an issue for me, because I have to lift a bike high to store it
on the bike wall rack (it's the upper most bike) in a long narrow hallway.
I know bike stores think I'm nuts, but I make sure I can lift every bike I
consider. I could not lift the 2016 Clementine; perhaps the 2017s are
lighter. I can lift my Joe A. with rack and bags, but it's not easy,
especially when I'm tired from my ride. I was able to lift a Cheviot and
it was a lot lighter than I thought it would be. I own the Joe.

Probably more subjective than you're looking for, but perhaps this will
help a little. I'm in my late 50's and this is part of my strength
training :) .

Hi, Mark in Beacon.

I use a bungee cord to keep my front wheel from flopping around when
lifting it. hook on water bottle cage, thru wheel, back to water bottle
cage.
