[RBW] Re: FS: Homer headbadge

2023-12-01 Thread Paul M
With the green twin top tube Rosco, it was that I just didn't like the
rocket ship head badge. With the Homer, I like the head badge design but
not the dark blue border. However, I did leave the head badge on my Wolbis.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day X2

2023-12-20 Thread Paul M
I wouldn't be surprised if RBW dropped the Homer Hilsen from their line-up
and replaced it with the Charlie H. Gallop (expected next year). Especially
since it looks to have longish chainstays and uses the same caliper brakes
as the Homer. Different frame design but similar "country bike" vibes.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Deluxe/Tallux 120mm & Ritchey/Nitto 100mm stems

2024-01-24 Thread Paul M
The Nitto Tallux stem came off an early model Clem L that had seen very
little use. I sold the frameset but kept the components. 120mm reach with a
-17 degree drop but levels out once mounted. 225mm quill. 25.4 handlebar
clamp. Excellent clean condition with some very faint marks from
installation. $55 shipped

The Ritchey Force stem is made by Nitto from the early 90's. 100mm reach
with zero rise but will give ~6 degree rise once mounted. 26.0 handlebar
clamp. Excellent condition. $60 shipped.

More pictures if interested, just reach out off this site. Thanks, Paul

[RBW] Gus and Susie ride off into the sunset

If you read the current Rivendell Blahg (Grants blog) he mentions that the
last fillet brazed Hillibikes, the Gus & Susie shipment that just arrived,
will be it for that those models being made. So last chance at owning a
beautiful ATB frameset.

Re: [RBW] Seat Post Slippage

2023-01-26 Thread Paul M
My recent Susie calls for a 26.8 seatpost but with the stock Kalloy
seatpost there is a fair amount of play. I had a 27.0 Kalloy seatpost that
fit snug and solved the problem. I'm not sure a Nitto 26.8 seatpost would
have solved the problem for this frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus and Susie ride off into the sunset

2023-01-31 Thread Paul M
I was hoping for a large when they went on sale last year and they
certainly sold out fast. The XL is fine in the height but it's 68.5cm
effective top tube is so long. The 56cm has a 66cm top tube length. They
used a 31.8mm diameter top tube on the XL (like the Gus) and a 28.6mm top
tube on the 56cm and smaller frames.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-05-05 Thread Paul M
I purchased a Sergio green Roadini from the last run of framesets. The tig
welding on this frame had some very poor welding beads. Definitely not what
I would expect on a $1300 frame. Maybe it was just this frame, but I feel
that it certainly could have been on the other Roadini's. That could
explain the move to a lugged Roadini frame. I sold it and bought a mustard
Homer (lugged :).

[RBW] Re: Steve Potts Siskiyou handlebar dimensions

2022-09-05 Thread Paul M
My thinking was to mount all the controls on the grip part of the handlebar
and ideally leave the forward extensions free for an alternate hand
position. This would we give you at least 3 different positions for your
hands- on the grips, on the forward extensions and on the bar beside the
stem.

Thanks for the offer of the Siskiyou bars Mack but I went with Soma
Fabrications Labor Day sale (20% off) on their Steve Potts inventory.

In the back of my mind was the side discussion on here or iBob about
the supposed deadness of the Surly Cross Check frame. Some forum members
 --
me included -- insisted the frame was a dog, no question, while others
disagreed. As it turned out, those in the former camp had the 56 and those
in the latter camp larger sizes. The theory was floated that maybe the
frame "opens up," that is, flexes more, in a good way, in the larger sizes
-- and with generally heavier riders -- and that accounted for the
difference. To me, this seems plausible. And if it's plausible that a
 frame
could improve in this way, then it also seems plausible that, conversely,
some frames could open up *too much* and become too flexy, in larger
 sizes,
thus necessitating some modification to maintain the same relative
stiffness as in the smaller sizes.

Also in the back of my mind was the experience of my larger cycling
friends who seem to break more frames than I ever have. But then, that's
 anecdotal.

I don't know if Grant ran any numbers or did any testing before
deciding to add the second tube to some bikes. Could just be for looks, or
could be a belt and suspenders kind of thing. Or a mix. But I wouldn't say
it's totally off base from an engineering point of view.

Anyway, you've ridden more 60 (and maybe 60 plus?) size frames than I
have, and if you say you don't feel a difference, then I can't argue.

The model name "Hunqapillar" that was inspired from a very large mailbox

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2019-12-19 Thread Paul M
Grant's blog (blahg) early November No. 30 starts off with a partial
schematic of a frame design that isn't labeled but looks like part
Roadini/Clem/Suzie Longbolt. The top tube attaches higher up on the seat
tube than the Suzie and the wheels show 700c x 2.0. With the lack of being
able to view the brakes it could be intended for long reach Tektro caliper
brakes! A mixed-use lower priced compete. Sounds like Charlie H. Gallop.

[RBW] Re: NOS Rivet Leather Saddle w/Ti rails $135

2020-01-20 Thread Paul M
This saddle came off a new Co-Motion divide that I purchased this summer.
It was only on the bike for 2 very short rides (20 miles) total. It has the
length of the Independence model (280mm) but the width of the Sonora model
(174mm) which makes me think it is an older model.

[RBW] Re: Chocomoose Versions

2020-04-04 Thread Paul M
Hi, I'm certain there was only one version of the Chocomoose. Rivendell
put them up for sale on the 'garage sale' around the time the Butternut
squash Appaloosa complete ended. Unlike the Rivendell Bullmoose bar which
will always sweep upwards unless it's on a bike with a very slack headtube
angle (69/70 degrees) the Chocomoose has a slight downward positioning
similar to a Albatross bar flipped over and offers excellent positioning.
My favorite bar for all around riding. Thanks, Paul

[RBW] FS: NOS Rivendell Silver Bar-End Shifters $59/shipped

2019-05-06 Thread Paul M
Hello, Just acquired a NOS Soma Saga complete bicycle that came with
Rivendell Silver bar-end shifters. Switching to flat bars so thought I
would sell these shifters. New take-off and never used as the bicycle was
still in the box. One of the black plastic washers is cracked and still
works but replacement washers are available on the Rivendell site for
$3.00/set. I see that these shifters retail for $104.00 and are currently
out of stock. $59.00 shipped. Thanks, Paul

Re: [RBW] What's the new model going to be in 2025?

2025-01-14 Thread Paul M
As much as I would like to see a new Hillibike frame design I think this
head badge is for a kid's bike. At first glance and Bill's suggestion of a
"Y" it's easy to stick with that idea. But by looking at it a second time,
I first saw the upside-down "spade" and then the "Y" resembled a slingshot.

I remembered Grant fascination with making thins from wood and how he would
write about it in the Rivendell Readers. Well, the #43 Reader shows you how
to make a slingshot. (cyclofiend archives).

The "spade" actually could be an Indian arrowhead.

The missing vowels could represent a grade school missing vowel spelling
worksheet for K-5.

Who didn't make their own slingshot and search for arrowheads as a kid!
