[RBW] Drops vs albatross. Easy to swap or do I need two bikes?

2024-04-30 Thread Michael
Looking for a single bike for casual rides on bike paths/paved/gravel/dirt
roads with the occasional 100 mile ride thrown in. Will suggest the Sam
Hillborne, which I'm leaning towards. I assumed I would build it with drops
for the long rides but I recently fell in love with albatross bars for
upright lazy bike path rides.
Is there a way to quickly/easily swap handlebars or are two bikes
inevitable?
Would a Sam with drops and an appaloosa or atlantis w/ albatross be a good
combo or is that too much overlap?

[RBW] DIY build or order complete?

2024-05-28 Thread Michael
Hi all,
Ordered a Sam as my first Riv but unsure whether or not I should tackle
building it up myself or just let Riv have at it. I have never built a bike
before but I do have a workshop and am good with tools/mechanically
inclined.

Are there any specific steps that you would absolutely not recommend a
beginner attempt? By the time i purchase specialty tools, it may have been
wiser to just order it complete?

Let me know what you guys think, I really don't want to do something stupid!

Thanks,

2024-05-29 Thread Michael
Thanks for the input everyone! While I agree that building the bike would
be much more rewarding and I am confident in my ability to learn, I also I
want to make sure this bike reaches its full potential so think I am going
to go ahead and let Riv build this one up. I wasn't aware of their labor
cost but from the sounds of it, it will probably be more economical having
them do it anyway. Thanks again!!

[RBW] Anodized Silver vs Polished Components. Which do you prefer?

I'm struggling to decide between polished vs anodized silver for Bronze
Green Sam build. This would be for
-Brakes
-Brake Levers
-Rims
-Edelux Light

I went into this sold on polished but folks at Riv have me reconsidering.
Anyone have input?
Thanks

[RBW] Re: Anodized Silver vs Polished Components. Which do you prefer?

2024-08-13 Thread Michael
Good suggestion with the gold, I bet that would look nice! Riv recommended
I go with silver rather than polished for aesthetics, which is why i'm
reconsidering. I originally thought the dark green frame paired with dark
brown brooks saddle & polished components (fenders, brakes, brake levers &
wheels) would look sharp, but maybe I don't have taste?

Most TED talks are pretty interesting. Intended to get people
thinking. As for helmets and cycling, I think there are systemic
reasons beyond helmets at play here which keep people from using a
bike for daily commuting... Consider how profitable McDonalds is
despite the health implications - convenience and habit are likely
factors.

On helmets: I live in Dallas where it is illegal to bicycle without
one, but legal for motorcyclists to go without. Doesn't make much
sense to me. So, I wear a helmet when cycling in Dallas. Beyond that,
I consider the ride and sometimes go without.

They are light and fast slicks. They handle great on wet roads.

Too bad no 650b sizes from Conti though on these models.

[RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for bicycle saddles? 3 questions for RivRiders.

2013-08-15 Thread Michael
Since I asked about shorts, I thought I'd ask about saddles, too.

1. What are the most comfortable saddles that you use? Please give the full
name of the saddle (like, don't say just "Terry saddle", if it was a "Terry
Liberator Y Gel saddle").

2. Please state for which kind of riding you use the saddle (ex:
racing/touring/dirt/stunt/commuting/drops/upright, etc.).

3. On which of your bikes do you use the saddle (ex:
Riv/All-R/Lego/Cust/Ram/Rom/Red/Bomb/Ap/At/Bet/Yv/Sam/Hunq/Road/Glor/Wilb/Bler/Homer/Simp/Quick/whatever

other models they make)?

4. Feel free to link to a pic of your saddle.

Interesting to read about these things.
For instance, I read that someone stated they used their B67 or 68
for bars-below-saddle riding, though contrary to its designed purpose, I
think.

Always nice to hear that people are using gear outside the box with success.
Helps keep perspective and not always buy into the "no you can't" gear
zeitgeists that are always flying around bicycle circles.

Seems like people say to pace yourself in the beginning of the ride to save
up the energy for later.

I also hear drinking a Coke or Pepsi at the 80 mile point gives you a sugar
and caffeine kick that makes the riding more pleasant at the end.

Does that count as doping though?

[RBW] WTT: (2) Rumpkins for (1) Hetre

2013-08-16 Thread Michael
A set of Fatty Rumpkins in good shape. Tread looks like lotsa life left on
them.
These are *not* the Force Fields. These are the original tan colored
sidewalls.

I think two Rumpkins for one Hetre is a fair trade.

If you've never ridden them before (as if, on this forum), they are
ultra-cush tires. Very smooth and nice on paved roads. Never used off road,
so couldn't say. But they are supposed to be good for that, too.

Email me for pics and questions. They have just been hangin' around for a
while in the garage, and I figure I'd be better off trading them for a
Hetre to match my Hetre-setted bike.

[RBW] Re: How do you use YOUR Rivendell triangle?

I like those triangles.

But I feel safer with a reflective vest.
Level of reflective strips and bright colors are up higher, surface area
bigger, and people in front as well as back can see it.
I don't know if a vest is better for safety or not. I just feel more
comfortable with a vest.

Of course. I have a bad track record. I got hit by a car last year. Perhaps a
triangle would have been better!

[RBW] What's with the MUSA shorts? Clue me in please.

2013-08-18 Thread Michael
Everyone seems to love them for their biking comfort.

I am not particularly comfortable cycling in everyday shorts or sweatpants
on bikes (though 98% of my riding is done in them),
so I don't see how the MUSA's will be an improvement for me.
Am I missing something?

I would like to experience the benefits you all are getting from them.
But before dropping the serious coin on them, need more info about what
makes them better than any other regular pants.
Thanks for your help.

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Change-out's

2013-08-20 Thread Michael

>
> I went from drops to Moustaches to Alba's on my Sam.
>

I had Tiagra road brake levers and bar end shifters on the original drops.

*Drops to Moustaches -* Just loosen and remove bar end shifter levers and
road brake levers and remount them on the Moustache after installing stache
onto the stem. *No need to disconnect any cables/housings if they are long
enough for the new bar height you will set.* Simple. No need to adjust
tension on cables after, I found, either. Still braked and shifted the same
after the switch.

*Moustaches/drops to Alba's* - Buy Alba's and 24.4 clamp stem for it if you
don't already have one (or NITTO 26-to-25.4 shim at rivbike.com or LBS),
new MTB brake levers (that will work with your existing type of brake
calipers), and new mountain bike brake cables. You can use existing
housings if they prove to be long enough. No need to undo the shifter
cables if they prove to be long enough. You will need to use new MTB brake
cables because the MTB levers don't take a road mushroom cable end. They
have that flattened cylinder looking end. Mount Albas onto new stem, or old
26 clamp stem with NITTO shim, brake levers next, grips, then bar end
shifters. Install and adjust new MTB brake cables.
 If no grips, bartape away.

It is really easy to swap everything. Fun, too.
Most time consuming thing is getting brake levers set up at the angles you
want. Depends how perfectionistic you want to be with it. Drops are the
worst for this because you have to set the lever level and angle and then
level the other lever to the first one. Moustaches are easy and fun. Alba's
are even easier.

Works best on flattish frames and not wrap arounds. But does work on one of
my wrap arounds. Frees up cockpit space, and no arms in the way.
You just look at the mirror and do a little scan with your head to see
everything behind you.
Works great to even look over your back at upcoming cars on the on ramps
you may be about to cross to get to the shoulder.

I am just thinking that a 40t x 26t. double crank seems like it needs a

40 would be too high to stay in for long, I would think, unless you are on
dead flats or downhills, or a strong rider (I couldn't do it).
The small ring would be too light, I would think, unless doing lotsa steep

Just throwing out some thoughts.

You may need a shorter stem, like an 8cm extension to get the bars back far
enough. That's what my Alba setup is. Least amount of weight possible on
hands - bolt upright.
I still get some hand stuff going on though.

I knew a guitarist once who told me that using those hand grips exercisers
eliminated his CT, if I remember correctly. Perhaps he caught it early. I
remember him grabbing a guitar neck to pick one up and yelling out loud
because it hurt.

[RBW] Sam creaking today with new set up. Any advice?

2013-08-31 Thread Michael
*What Happened:*
After about 10 miles riding, something on bars/stem started creaking when I
put weight on the right ramp, hood, and drops. Left side doesn't creak if I
put weight on it.
I tightened the hood, and stem bar clamp. Stem bolt is tight. Bars still
squeak but not as bad.
**
*Info history:*
I put my new, from RBW, 41 Noodles on it and set it up as close as I could
to my dependable Giant bike set up.
Bars 1.3cm below saddle height. Feels great. Nitto Deluxe stem 190 rise.
Only about 3mm's left before stem extension bottoms out by hitting the
headset lock nut. So I think stem wedge should be above the butt of the
head tube if there is one. I have used this setup at higher bar levels and
no creaking. Just today after setting it 1.3cm below saddle. At 1cm below
saddle, no creaks either.

BTW, I *lightly* greased the stem below min insertion point and wedge when
installing.

*Ideas?:*
Maybe needs grease on bar cuff at stem clamp?
More grease on stem and wedge?
Maybe the stem being all the way down in steer tube is creaking because so
much of it is contacting the inside of steer tube now and the whole rise
shaft need grease?

New 41 Noodle from RBW, so I don't think the bar would have a crack in it
that creaks. The bars are flexy (both sides) and I can see them flex when I
push hard on the drops. I did this with bike stopped to try to make it
creak to see where the noise is coming from.

*Any other ideas come to mind?*

It was a really nice dark blue. Looked like it may have been metallic. Hard to

a 70 miler today.
Beautiful riding through hilly suburban areas and the Grist Mill Trail and
the B&A Trail, which runs from BWI Airport to Annapolis.

I took the Noodle Sam, and I am hoping to ride it for the century ride.
Very comfortable. Great handling. Very smooth and cushy ride. I am really
enjoying it. I like the Carradice bag a lot. Great to hold everything I
need and clothes that I take off during the ride as I warm up. So
convenient.

I really wanted to take more pics. There was a lot of cool stuff to see,
but I don't like breaking my rhythm so much once I get going. Thinking
about time, too as the rides have been getting longish.

Anyway, here are some shots, just for fun. Sorry for the bad pics.

The Lord willing, I will be able to ride and complete the Seagull Century
on Oct. 5th.

[RBW] The state of cycling on Canton, China

2013-09-28 Thread Michael
Just came back from visiting family there. Always cool to see the bikes
there, and the interesting add-ons and problem solvers people come up with
to make a bike work the way they want..
Took lotsa pics I hope to have up tonight on Flikr and saw some stuff I
thought you all would get a kick out of.

Looks like the bikes there are ridden for pure function. I saw maybe 95%
function bikes. 5% roadbikes/fixies.
Forget about helmets, even for children on bikes and infants who ride with
Mom on the commute. "Too hot", my cousin said when I asked her why no one
wears helmets.
Bikes zig-zag all over the road, and bikes don't stop for lights or stops
signs. They come at moving car traffic from all directions.
The rule of the road there is that if you are the bigger vehicle, and you
hit a smaller vehicle, you are to blame, and no one wants that trouble, so
people give way to bikes, mopeds, and pedestrians. I saw lotsa of cyclists
just pull out in front of moving busses and cars (within feet). Also, bikes
go the wrong way on roads. I saw no road rage, and everyone just seems to
accept the fact that bikes have no rules of the road, and they can just
ride however and wherever, whenever they want. Mopeds, too.

Some things I saw. Pics to some:
1. Double top tubes abound. I saw these on lots of Chinese maker,
traditional type 2-wheeled bikes. (There were also double forks on 3
wheeled delivery bikes).
2. Massive beausage abounds. - to the point of rusted out front baskets
that the sides have separated from the base and just sit there loose on it.
I also saw trashed headsets, one with the bb's still sitting in the lower
cup. This was on a newspaper delivery bike. It was still in use.
3. Self rigged problem solvers abound. - Some of the solutions I saw on
bikes to make them work they way people wanted them were very interesting.
One guy had a basket wired to his drop bar tops with only about 2 finders'
worth of interruptor brake lever to grab for use. And these were the only
brake levers on the bike. He also had plastic bottles wired as extensions
on his short fenders.
4. Cool add ons you don't see here in the states (at least I haven't).
Umbrella clamps, so you can attach an umbrella to your handlebars and ride
under cover. Folds down when not in use. Massively overbuilt rear racks or
heavy loads and passengers. Some fold out to make bigger platforms, with
cushioned seat.

*One of the most unique things I saw were the child seat attachments for
bikes.*
Lots of people bring their infants on their bikes with them. There are some
child seats that are made of wire and attach to the frame sorta like the
Silver Hupes.
Also, some people weld a seatpost to their DT so the kid rides in front.
Both set ups have a "T" bar welded to the frame so the kids can hold on
while Mom pedals.
I saw someone with two kids on their bike.

I will post a link to pics of these neat things I saw hopefully today or
tomorrow.

I also noticed that it looks like electric bikes are overtaking the number
of pedaled bikes. Even some pedaled bikes were retrofitted and run on
electricity now.
The batteries are rectangular and sit in front of the seat tube. Pedals are
just for a pace to put your feet. Some people remove the pedals and sit
with their feet on the DT. Huge hubs front and back. Not sure how it works.

I just realized that I didn't get a pic of what I thought were the
prettiest bikes there to be seen - The Guangzhou made bikes that look like
old Raleigh three speeds. They had cassettes, though. But were those pretty
black, dark green, and dark maroon bikes with matched color fenders. Very
pretty bikes.

I saw some of those old looking, Guangzhou made bikes that looked like
Raleigh 3 speeds. They were gorgeous, and my favorite bikes that I saw over
there. The matching fenders are awesome.
*Since RBW is adding their own chainrings now (hopefully with logo built
into them, like old Raleigh rings), maybe they can come out with color
matched fenders for their frames, too.*

Some bikes had the rod pull brakes on them with those long brake levers
that spanned the length of the handlebars.

I don't know what quality those bikes are made as nowadays, but they seemed
pretty popular, and I saw them I all the bike shops, though they were the
minority on the showroom floor.
There were lots of more modern, comfort bike framesets on the road it
seemed, and lots of folder bikes.

[RBW] Hookin' up shifters question

2013-09-29 Thread Michael
Putting Albas with fric/sis bar ends onto Bleriot. Hope to be able to
friction shift though over the 10-speed cassette.

*1. How hard do I pull on and hold the shifter cable when I tighten it down
with the bolt on the derailer?*
*Really hard, or just pull gently to its full length? How do I know the
cable tension is correct?*
**
*2. If I need to use the barend's indexing option because it just wont
friction shift over 10 well, what else do I need to do for adjusting cable
tension for SIS?*

two, I think (8 and 10cm?).
3.Looks. I like the traditional looks of the "7" shape stem much better

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-09 Thread Michael
Have used both Racers and Tektro R559 brakes.

Paul's:
were hard to get centered for me. So many points of adjustment possible on
them. Hard to get cables attached. I was new to center pulls though. Got easier
each time I messed with them. They were great with salmon pads.

R559's:
install and set up wy easier for me. I like them much better. More user
friendly for an un-mechanic like me.

Both stop and feel just as good to my unrefined hands.
I am not a brake connoisseur. So I don't know from modulation.
Not sure which (Yokozuna or Koolstop salmon pads) come from the better slopes
of the rubber plantations.

If I remember correctly, all my Brookses were 1m off or so, and I just let
the clamps guide the rails in as I tightened.

I once saw an instruction seat for a Terry saddle that was real persnickety
in warning the consumer that the rails had to fit perfectly into the clamp.
Both fore and aft as well as side to side. They seem to want their saddles
to get mounted on a clamp that fits their saddles just so.

But not Neubaums.
Need something wider that will more easily wrap over gel padded drops.

Thanks.

That fork is so pretty that you might as well ditch your heirloom flatwear

Usually I see one hub for both. But two sounds better if you get more power

Re: [RBW] Re: 56cm Sam Hillborne on SF craigslist

2013-10-20 Thread Michael
Well, the reason I call it "cheap" is only because seems like lotsa oold
Rivs I have seen online for sale have asking prices that are for more than
their original values from when they were production bikes. Those, I just don't
get..

I could understand if they have Son hubs and Phil stuff and Herse this and
Rich- built that...

Anyway, this Sam being only year old, the seller is being extremely fair for
his asking price.
It would have made my day when I was looking for my first used Rivbike... and
if I was a 56 size.
