Eric, thanks for the report. It was nicely structured and written with such gentle thoughtfulness. Thanks also for sharing your packing list in so much detail. I have some sport tops but another personal sensory thing for me is drinking over plastic, I don't like it for hot or cold drinks and I prefer a metal edge. I didn't mind stopping a few times to swig some water while riding. I do wonder if maybe I was over dressed but I didn't feel like I was burning up, just sweating like mad. I might have liked a lighter sweater, something like the Wooly Warm jerseys but without the weird cut, fit and pockets (they're great, they just don't fit me right). The camp pillow is great. Re: [RBW] Triple to double conversion

2023-07-15 Thread Junes
Exactly, Garth. I continue to run triples, so I have viewed the trend toward purportedly simpler drivetrains with curiosity and from a long distance. I have never felt a need to simplify with a double or especially a 1x configuration. It’s basically a one-time setup for the triple, and with friction shifting there’s rarely a need to fuss with any of it again. Set it and forget it. I love the super wide gear range, and I enjoy the mechanics of shifting front and rear.  I totally understand the urge to tinker and play with different setups for fun and variation, though. But with cranks and front ders I’m either too set in my ways or too lazy to futz around. On Jul 15, 2023, at 14:27, Garth wrote:Along the lines of what exliontamer expressed, the bowed out stays of frames like the Bomba and Atlantis don't lend themselves to fufu trendy gearing configurations. Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-07 Thread Junes
I agree with Christian’s general message. If the young man does end up taking the bike to college, make sure he locks it properly and redundantly. Whenever I lock a Rivendell to a rack, I lock the heck out of it. I’m talking three U locks and a thick cable lock. It’s a pain, you have to find the right kind of rack to accommodate all the locks, and it means carrying an extra weight. The additional few seconds a thief would have to spend dealing with the locks might be enough deterrent. Yes to Pitlocks, too. With a couple of extra keys. There are no guarantees, even with the crazy number of locks I use. I’m not sure how else to integrate the bikes into daily life, though. I had a bike stolen from my front lawn when I was a kid, and another one in college. It’s a horrible feeling no matter how cheap or fancy the bike is. The college experience taught me that you have to make it onerous for a thief, and you can’t ever be lax about it. Also, be sure to insure the bike! As a college student his property might still be covered under his parents’ homeowners policy. My college bike was. Best to check to make sure. JimOn Aug 7, 2023, at 18:09, christian poppell wrote:  TL;DRI disagree... Later, it spent time locked up outside the Ashby BART station in Berkeley while it was at work. Most of the bike theft that happened on campus was due to bicycles being left in one spot too long. A thief will grab a wheel or a saddle and from there, the bike begins losing parts left and right, like a dead whale at the bottom of the ocean. The other thefts that happened were due to poor locks or incorrect locking. I think if the Clem were dressed down to less expensive parts and became less pretty it could work. Pitlocks, ball bearings glued into allen heads, and hose clamps all make great deterrents as does tape, stickers, and other adornments (helps save the paint too). Multiple quality U locks properly used should be enough deterrent to a casual thief. The question to your son would be if that kind of responsibility is something he is up for? One of the great things about going away to school is being immersed in the culture and having the flexibility to do new things with new people. Worrying about your bike being stolen can put a damper on those experiences. At the end of the day, if someone recognises the bike and wants to take it they will; even quality locks are easy to cut with the right tools. The good news is that the giant Clem is a very "cool" bike to most people. One additional solution is to get a pre owned or new Clem that you have less history with, won't sting as much if it does get nicked. Grant and Co. designed the Clem to be a bike one could do everything on and not be precious about. There's a metaphor here about loving something and letting it go and the freedom that comes when we separate ourselves from the items that we own but this is getting long.ChristianPhoenix, AZPS: The only things that happened to the bike while outside was people putting garbage in my basket (cups, wrappers) and someone unraveled half my bar tape which was fine because it was time for new tape anyway.   On Monday, August 7, 2023 at 2:53:46 PM UTC-7 pi...@gmail.com wrote:I went to college at Cal Berkeley. Re: [RBW] Re: Rapid rise derailleur suggestion

2024-03-18 Thread Junes
High normal refers to “regular” rear derailleurs, for which the default position with no spring tension is in the highest gear. Hence, high normal. Low normal (what Shimano called Rapid Rise) is the opposite: the default derailleur position without spring tension is in the lowest (largest) gear. This is why Grant/Riv are calling their low normal derailleur in development the “OM,” for opposite movement, sort of rejecting the notion that high normal is the absolute normal. The different movements are just opposite each other. On Mar 18, 2024, at 11:02 PM, John Rinker wrote:Just curious: What does 'high normal' mean in the derailleur world?Cheers, JohnOn Monday, March 18, 2024 at 3:44:45 PM UTC-7 ian m wrote:I believe the M952 is high normal, but you can't go wrong with the M951On Monday, March 18, 2024 at 1:01:39 PM UTC-4 chintan...@gmail.com wrote:I'm looking to try a RR derailleur and want something under 50-60 ideally.Which ones would you recommend? I like how it keeps me from being too much on the front wheel during off-roading. Indeed I have safety tabs on the front, will on the rear soon too - I did have a stick jam situation before while on a very untrodden and remote stretch of double track and I don't wish to repeat that harrowing situation again. They are the Simworks 63mm fenders and underneath are 48mm Ultradynamicos.  I don't really like knobby tires plus fenders generally because all the "bzzzt" noise of pebbles going through the fender is annoying, but these are good because they have a pretty solid center section and widely spaced, shallow knobs on the side - they don't pick stuff up like most knobbies. The photo was taken midway up a low-traffic, rather technical hiking trail that followed a creek up the mountain to the powerline cut where we were aiming. None of it was rideable, nor did we expected it would be. It's a heck of an upper body workout, and frustrating at times, but I've been enjoying these "rides" where we try to link up sections we know are good using as little pavement as possible. The key has been to accept that there will be some hike-a-bike. Anyhow, the Bombadil, which I've had since October 2020, purchased from Joe, and repainted by Chris DeKerf around Christmas 2021, is now in "drop bar adventure bike" configuration. It's strange, no doubt, to have a Hillborne and Bombadil and to put the drop bars on the Bombadil. But my logic is - the Hillborne is a great commuter and errand bike on Albatross and with the pannier rack. It's got a kickstand, too. The Bombadil may be stout but it's capable of just about anything, and with drop bars it feels pretty sporty and not unlike a 'monstercross' rig. Just prettier. Plans at present include: install the SON fender mount tail light I have around, add a M1-B front rack so I can run a larger bag, and swap the bright fender flap for a grey Riv one I have kicking around. I also have a full canvas camp setup using R-10 and Tubus Tara racks; looking forward to some more adventures on this soon!

Hi m f, welcome! Congrats on the bike. Regarding your question: It seems odd to find an All Rounder, or any Riv for that matter, without rack mounts on the upper/mid fork blade. Would this have been a special request to not have them? It’s not totally unusual for Rivs, particularly early-ish ones, to have forks devoid of rack mount eyelets. Two of my Rivs don’t have them, one an Atlantis, explicitly positioned as an all-rounder, and one a Glorius. (Incidentally both were Toyo built.) In an early Atlantis brochure, Grant even wrote that a lack of such fork eyelets is better because using clamps to attach rack struts to forks is superior. All recent Rivs have eyelets galore, though.  On Mar 22, 2023, at 19:08, Andrew Letton wrote:

My 1999 and 2003 Road customs, also built for 26" wheels, are better "All Round" both on pavement and in dirt than either XO-1 and the first Road custom, with much longer chainstays, slightly sacker head, and upsloping tts with extended head tubes. I say again that the later Road customs ride better on dirt, particularly sandy surfaces, than the XO-1 and the first gen, AR-based road custom.I think -- but I am open to reasoned rebuttal -- that an Atlantis or Sam Hill would be better for all round riding than either XOs or ARs.

Yeah, talk to Dustin in the Phil Wood service department. He’s super helpful. I think the general rule is that if the hub is more than about 12 or 15 years old, you’d have to send it in for service because the older designs are not user serviceable. If it’s less, you might be able to service it yourself — if the parts are available. They don’t machine all their parts in house anymore, if they ever did. They have recently been facing supply constraints for various hub components manufactured by third party suppliers. Either way be prepared to part with $$$. Good luck. Doug, we had the same issue with the shiny Riv rack on a Wilbury. I asked the fine folks at Rivendell, who suggested we rig something up with stainless band clamps (or P clamps), the Nitto versions of which (https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-band-clamps-pair) have been sold out for a long time, and M5 or M6 bolts and nuts. I found some good stainless clamps at the local hardware store and affixed a taillight plate to the rack with no issues at all. It’s stable, with no shake or quiver. It’s a great rack, especially for the money, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one again. The only shortcoming was the lack of the tail light plate, and it was easily remedied with a couple of dollars for the clamps. JimOn Jul 4, 2022, at 21:53, Doug H. wrote:All,I'm looking to order the Rivendell Shiny rear rack but from the photos I don't see an obvious way to mount my B&M Toplight brake light. The light has 50mm bolt spacing. Have any of you installed one of these lights or other rear lights on the Shiny Rear Rack? Thanks,Doug
